Cleared for take-off
Located in San José, Calif., in the heart of Silicon Valley, the
Norman Y. Mineta San José International Airport hosts more
than 9.7 million passengers per year. The airport is in the
midst of a complete makeover and expansion.
Designers had a vision for the new terminal at the Mineta San José
International Airport, and that vision included the warm, natural look that
only real wood can provide. Architects entertained the idea of using solid
wood to complement the high glass walls and natural light. However, for
cost, ease of installation, and design reasons, a natural veneer applied to
a metal substrate provided the best of both worlds: the aesthetic appeal
of natural wood and the performance characteristics of aluminum. That’s
where Contact Industries and its partner, Hunter Douglas, came in.
Hunter Douglas and Contact combined talents to create metal wall paneling
wrapped with clear maple veneer for a light-colored finish to complement
the established color palette. What’s more, the system was versatile and
pliable enough to apply in horizontal, vertical and curved configurations.
Now everyone agrees: the new terminal is cleared for take-off.
