ACEA Motor Oil Specifications
The Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobiles
(ACEA) sets performance and quality classifications used by
most European automakers. Generally, ACEA specifications set
the bar higher for protection than they do for emissions or fuel
economy, and thus often differ significantly from both API and
ILSAC specifications.
ACEA “A” specifications are for gasoline engines, while “B”
specifications are for diesel engines in passenger cars. The “C”
specifications are for gasoline or diesel engines (both passenger
car and light truck or van) that use diesel particulate filters or
other catalysts to reduce emissions.
A1/B1 — Stable, stay-in grade oil intended for use at extended
drain intervals in gasoline (A1) and car/light van diesel (B1) engines specifically designed to be capable of using low-friction,
low-viscosity oils with a high temperature, high shear (HTHS)
viscosity.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 5W-30, 5W-40
A3/B3 — Stable, stay-in grade oil intended for use in highperformance gasoline (A3) and car/light van diesel engines
(B3) and/or for extended drain intervals where specified by the
engine manufacturer, and/or for year-round use of low-viscosity
oils and/or for severe operating conditions as defined by the
engine manufacturer.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 10W-40, 10W-60, 5W-30,
5W-40, 5W-50
A3/B4 — Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use in high
performance gasoline (A3) and direct-injection diesel engines
(B4), but also suitable for applications described under A3/B3.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 10W-40, 10W-60, 5W-30,
5W-40, 5W-50
A5/B5 — Intended for use at extended drain intervals in highperformance gasoline engines (A5) and car/light van diesel
(B5) engines designed to be capable of using low-friction, lowviscosity oils with a high temperature/high shear (HTHS) rate
viscosity. Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40
C1 — Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalystcompatible oil in vehicles with diesel particulate filters (DPFs)
and three-way catalysts (TWCs) in high-performance car and
light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low-friction, lowviscosity, low sulfated ash, phosphorus and sulfur oils. These
oils increase the life of diesel particulate filters and provide fuel
economy benefits. However, these oils have low SAPS limits
and may be unsuitable for use in some engines.
Typical grade: 5W-30
C2 — Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalystcompatible oil in vehicles with DPFs and TWCs in high-performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines designed
to be capable of using low-friction, low-viscosity oils. These oils
will increase DPF and TWC life.
Typical grades: 0W-40, 5W-30
C3 — Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalystcompatible oil in vehicles with DPFs and TWCs in high-performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines. Very
similar to C2 but without fuel-economy requirements. Frequently matches specifications for BMW and DaimlerChrysler diesel
cars. ACEA C3 oils may be unsuitable for use in some engines.
Typical grades: 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40
C4 — Suitable for diesel engines fitted with DPFs and TWCs.
These oils will increase the life of diesel particulate filters and
provide fuel economy benefits. However, these oils have low
SAPS limits and may be unsuitable for use in some engines.
Typical grade: 5W-30
E4 — Provides excellent control of piston cleanliness, wear,
soot handling and lubricant stability. Recommended for highlyrated diesel engines meeting Euro 1, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV
and Euro V emission requirements and running under severe
conditions. Suitable for engines without particulate filters, and
some EGR engines.
Typical grades: 5W-30

soot handling and lubricant stability. Recommended for highlyrated diesel engines meeting Euro 1, Euro II, Euro III, Euro IV,
Euro V and Euro VI emission requirements and running under
very severe conditions. Suitable for EGR engines, with or without particulate filters, and is designed for use in combination
with low-sulfur diesel fuel.
Typical grades: 10W-40
E7 — Provides effective control with respect to piston cleanliness and bore polishing. Further provides excellent wear control, soot handling and lubricant stability. Recommended for
highly-rated diesel engines meeting Euro I, Euro II, Euro III,
Euro IV and Euro V emission requirements and running under
severe conditions. Suitable for engines with or without particulate filters, and for most EGR engines or SCR NOx reduction
systems.
Typical grades: 10W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40
E9 — Provides effective control with respect to piston cleanliness and bore polishing. Further provides excellent wear control, soot handling and lubricant stability. Recommended for
highly-rated diesel engines meeting Euro 1, Euro II, Euro III,
Euro IV, Euro V and Euro VI emission requirements and running under severe conditions. Suitable for engines with or without particulate filters and most EGR engines or engines fitted
with SCR NOx reduction systems. Strongly recommended for
engines with particulate filters, and designed for use in combination with low-sulfur diesel fuel.
Typical grades: 5W-40, 15W-40
Volkswagen Motor Oil Specs
Volkswagen introduced its own specifications for engine oil in the
1990s to ensure that oils met a minimum standard suitable for its vehicles. Over the years, the requirements made on oils have increased
and the Volkswagen specifications have moved on from the early
500.00 specification to the latest 504.00 and 507.00 specifications.
Volkswagen specifications are now used for Audi, Skoda, Seat and
Volkswagen cars.
500.00 — This is an “old” oil specification and is applicable
to engines built before model year 2000 (up to August 1999).
This oil can be used in older gasoline and some diesel engines,
except from those referred to under other specifications. Not
suitable for vehicles using extended service intervals.
Typical grades: 10W-40, 5W-40, 5W-50
501.01 — This is an “old” oil specification and is applicable to
engines built before model year 2000 (up to August 1999). VW
501.01 is very similar to the VW 500.00 specification, and can
be used for the same applications in older gasoline and some
diesel engines, except those referred to under other specifications.
Typical grades: 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-60, 15W-40, 15W-50, 5W-40, 5W-50
502.00 — Oils meeting this specification should only be used
in gasoline engines. Recommended for those vehicles that are
subject to arduous conditions. Not recommended for use in any
engines with variable service intervals.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 10W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40,
5W-50
503.00 — This specification is for gasoline engines with extended service intervals (up to 18,000 miles or 24 months). Vehicles using the specification include older models of the Audi
S4, but not the RS4, the TT, S3 or A8 6.0L V12 with outputs
of more than 180hp, which should use oils meeting the VW
503.01 or VW 504.00 spec. Now superseded by the VW 504.00
specification.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40
503.01 — This specification is specifically for older Audi RS4,
Audi TT, S3 and Audi A8 6.0L V12 models with outputs of more
than 180hp, running with variable service intervals (18,000
miles or 24 months). Now superseded by the VW 504.00 specification.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 5W-40
504.00 — Suitable for all gasoline engines with extended service intervals (18,000 miles or 24 months). The 504.00 specification supersedes the VW 503.00 and VW 503.01 specifications. Volkswagen 504.00 oils are suitable for engines meeting
the demands of Euro IV emissions standards.
Typical grade: 5W-30
505.00 — The oldest Volkswagen specification for diesel cars;
now relevant only to pre-2000 model diesel cars (with or without turbocharger). For diesel cars from 2000 onwards, the
VW 505.00 specification has largely been superseded by the
505.01, 506.00, 506.01 and 507.00 specifications.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-60,
15W-40, 15W-50, 5W-30, 5W-40, 5W-50
505.01 — These oils are especially for “Pumpe-Düse” (unit injector or “PD” engines) running on fixed service intervals (9,000
miles/12 months). It is vitally important to use an oil meeting
either this, the VW 506.01 specification or the VW 507.00
specification to avoid damaging the diesel pump in PD engines.
For PD-engine cars with a diesel particulate filter (DPF),
use only an oil meeting the VW 507.00 specification.
Typical grades: 5W-40
506.00 — These oils are suitable for diesel engines with extended service intervals of up to 30,000 miles/24 months). Not
for use on engines with a single injector pump. Oil change is
indicated by the electronic service indicator.
Typical grade: 0W-30
506.01 — These oils are especially for “Pumpe-Düse” (unit injector or “PD” engines) running on extended service intervals
(30,000 miles/ 24 months). Oil change is indicated by the electronic service indicator. It is vitally important to use an oil meeting either this, the VW 505.01 specification or the VW 507.00
specification to avoid damaging the diesel pump in PD engines.
For PD-engine cars with a DPF, use only an oil meeting the VW
507.00 specification.
Typical grade: 0W-30
507.00 — These oils are suitable for almost all VAG diesel
engines from 2000 onwards with extended service intervals,
unitary injector pumps and also Pumpe-Düse (“PD”) engines,
excluding V10 and R5 engines and VW commercial vehicles
without fitted DPF, which must use a 506.01 specification oil.
Typical grade: 5W-30
Mercedes-Benz Motor Oil Specs
Like several European automakers, Mercedes-Benz has created its
own motor oil specifications that frequently go above and beyond
those recommended by both API and ACEA. Following are those
specifications.
MB 229.1 — The MB 229.1 engine oil specification is for car
gasoline and diesel engines. It is more stringent than ACEA A2/
A3 and B2/B3.
Typical grades: 10W-30, 10W-40, 10W-60, 15W-40, 15W-50,
5W-40, 5W-50
MB 229.3 — Specification for engine oils intended for cars with
extended oil change intervals (18,000 miles or 30,000 km).
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 10W-40, 5W-40, 5W-50
MB 229.31 — Engine oils for cars with exhaust gas after-treatment. Low ash content required.
Typical grades: 5W-30, 5W-40
MB 229.5 — Fuel economy engine oil for longer oil change
intervals (vehicles manufactured from 2002 onwards) with service indicators. Special, stricter requirements than ACEA A3/
B3. For use in all gasoline and diesel engines. These engine
oils also comply with MB 229.1 and MB 229.3 specifications.
Typical grades: 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30, 5W-40
MB 229.51 — Very high performance oil for engines with diesel particle filters and extended oil change intervals. Better fuel
economy than MB 229.5.
