They were able to sign up
for all sports and many different
clubs. The majority of the students
who attended High School Investigation Day, overall was pleased
with the information they received,
while more than half of them stated, “I can’t wait to come here.”
As a final gift and thank you
to those who attended, they were
given Bowen goody bags which
contained Bowen gear and candy.
As Bowen says goodbye to the C/O ‘14, it prepares to
welcome the new class of 2018!

published by Bowen High School students.
THE BOWEN ARROW has been established
as a designated public forum for student editors
to inform and educate their readers as well as
for the discussion of issues of concern to their
audience. It will not be reviewed or restrained
by school officials prior to publication or
distribution. Advisers may—and should—coach
and discuss content during the writing process.
Because the school does not engage in prior
review, and the content of THE BOWEN
ARROW is determined by and reflects only the
views of the student staff and not school officials
or the school itself, its student editorial board
and responsible student staff members assume
complete legal and financial liability for the
content of the publication.
Student journalists may use print and electronic
media to report news and information,
to communicate with other students and
individuals, to ask questions of and consult
with experts and to gather material to meet their
newsgathering and research needs.

Dear Boilermaker Family,
June is a wonderful, yet
bittersweet time for our BHS family. With sublime pleasure and sorrow, I would like to bid farewell
to our graduating class of 2014.
Your leadership, personality, and
love for BHS are inspiring, and
you will each be missed more than
you know. You will now embark
on your most exciting journey into
adulthood! Stay strong and steadfast; hard work and persistence will
always be rewarded!
In parting, I would like to
share with our graduating seniors a
quote from our First Lady, Michelle
Obama:
“You may not always have
a comfortable life and you will not
always be able to solve all of the
world’s problems at once, but don’t
ever underestimate the importance
you can have because history has
shown us that courage can be contagious, and hope can take on a life
of its own.”

Annual Softball Game
Although a little late, Bowen had their annual Cinco de Mayo
program on Friday, May 16, during
7th and 8th periods.
The celebration began with
all of the Spanish classes reciting the Juramento a la Bandera, or
Mexico’s Pledge of Allegiance.
Jasmine Rodriguez shared
the meaning of the holiday by explaining that it is a day to celebrate
Mexico defeating the French at The
Battle of Pueblo.
Next was an exciting performance of the Baile Folklorico
Dance led by Stephanie Porraz.
“The dancers were really
great,” said Mr. Vocal, Spanish
teacher. “I liked how they mixed
the old with new.”

The editorial board, which consists of the staff’s
student editors, will determine the content,
including all unsigned editorials. The views
stated in editorials represent that of a majority of
the editorial board. Signed columns or reviews
represent only the opinion of the author.
THE BOWEN ARROW may accept letters to
the editor, guest columns and news releases from
students, faculty, administrators, community
residents and the general public. We ask that
letters to the editor, guest columns or other
submissions be 300 words or less and contain
the author’s name, address and signature. All
submissions will be verified.
THE BOWEN ARROW editorial board reserves
the right to withhold a letter or column or other
submission and/or return it for revision if it
contains unprotected speech or grammatical
errors that could hamper its meaning. Deadlines
for letters and columns will be determined by
each year’s student staff, allowing sufficient
time for verification of authorship prior to
publication.
Staff members will strive to correct errors prior
to publication; however, if the editorial board
determines a significant error is printed, the
editorial board will determine the manner and
timeliness of a correction.
The staff of THE BOWEN ARROW will strive
to report all issues in a legal, objective, accurate
and ethical manner, according to the Canons
of Professional Journalism developed by the
Society for Professional Journalists. The Canons
of Professional Journalism include a code of
ethics concerning accuracy, responsibility,
integrity, conflict of interest, impartiality, fair
play, freedom of the press, independence,
sensationalism, personal privacy, obstruction of
justice, creditability and advertising.
The adviser will not act as a censor or determine
the content of the paper. The adviser will offer
advice and instruction, following the Code of
Ethics for Advisers established by the Journalism
Education Association as well as the Canons of
Professional Journalism. School officials shall
not fire or otherwise discipline advisers for
content in student media that is determined and
published by the student staff.
THE BOWEN ARROW will not avoid
publishing a story solely on the basis of possible
dissent or controversy.
THE BOWEN ARROW editorial board reserves
the right to accept or reject any ad in accordance
with its advertising policy.The duly appointed
editor or co-editors shall interpret and enforce
this editorial policy.

well as Mr. Sechrist and Raul Lopez performing with their guitars.
The highlight of the show
was a father and son performance.
With Raul Lopez on keyboard and
his dad on guitar, the two shared
their Mexican heritage through
song. Mrs. Holloway, who has
led and participated in the assemly

RULES!
This year’s highly awaited
staff vs. student softball game finally happened on Friday, May 26,
at Bessemer Park field.
Students from the boys
baseball team and girls softball
team gave it their best to go against
Bowen staff. Several staff, including Mr. Sechrist, Ms. Flowers, Mrs.
Holloway, Ms. Fletcher, Mr. Vespa,
Mr. Paniagua, and more, teamed up
to face the students on the filed.
The game began with Coach
Cook as pitcher and the staff in the
lead. Mr. Vespa made a few good
hits and brought in runners home.
Although the rules were a bit altered for this friendly game, the
staff made good on their bragging
and remained in the lead for most
of the time.
“I think we started losing
when players began stealing bases.
There were also a few questionable
calls,” said Ms. Flowers.
Whatever the calls, the
students pulled it off and beat the
teachers with a final score of 9-8.
The teachers and students had fun
playing and with this victory, the
students will be ready as ever to defend their title next year.

Memorial Day Parade By Cavon Lee

On a hot, Saturday morning,
young Junior R.O.T.C cadets from
all over the city of Chicago attended
the annual Memorial Day Parade to
salute all fallen soldiers whose lives
have been taken while in the Army,
Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps.
The Cadets of all Chicago Public
High Schools showed what they
were made of.
“Bowen did the best job, but
C.V.S. was our best competition on
certain things such as, songs being
played on the drums,” said a Bowen
student.
After the cadets
made it to the end of the parade,
rested their legs, and cooled off,
some of the students got the chance
to actually see a four-man gun
salute where four navy men line up
on the side of each other and fire
their rifles to salute the fallen.

Bowen’s senior luncheon
was held on Wednesday, May 21,
at the beautiful Lakeshore Hotel
in downtown Chicago. Everyone
came dressed in their best clothes
and some students even brought
guests. Mr. Robinson welcomed everyone to the luncheon and then told
us we could eat. We had greens,
salad, meat loaf and more. For dessert, there was chocolate cake, carrot cake, German chocolate cake
and more.

After lunch, Mrs. Holloway
and Ms. Whitfield gave out awards
and medals to the students that won
awards like most helpful, journalist of the year, and most improved.
These awards came from senior
teachers like, Mr. Linn, Ms. Flowers, Mr. Paniagua and Mr. Grey.

gave awards to students that received scholarships and stated how
much money they each received.

Ward and Andre Starks.
A Bowen alumnus from
the class of 1961 came and talked
about his high school experience
and then gave the Bowen Alumni
Scholarship Awards worth $1,000
for four years to Jasmine Bennett,
Corteris Parks, and Desire Rhodes.
He also gave them a book about
Chicago and a nice letter.
Finally, Mrs. Abdulla gave
out dream catchers to Jasmine Bennett, Pedro Torres, Wade Campbell,
Carlos Juarez, and Erica Perez, as
they were chosen to represent Bowen by being pictured on banners
throughout the neighborhood.
After all that was done, the
DJ played some music for us and
we danced the day away. Everyone
had a great time and made this a
memorable event.

BHS is officialy part of the million dollar scholarship club.

track team this year.
“He’s very competitive,”
said his coach Mr. Kelleher, “a
great athlete and a strong leader.”
Corteris joined the track
team because he wanted to try
something new. It has also helped
him with other sports like baseball
& football.
Corteris ran track in 7th
& 8th grade, and he played other
sports as a freshman & sophomore.
He has been running on the track
track team for two years.
I’m honored to be recognized. My success comes from hard
work and dedication,” said Parks.

Coach Nelson says that

“We made it neat, we organized,
and it was really enjoyable,” said
Vicson Perez. After helping at the center, the
class walked to Cocula Restaurant
to enjoy a meal together.
Those who participated earned
a total of ten service learning hours
which will go toward the required
40 hours needed for graduation.
The students really enjoyed
the trip and felt that they helped a
part of society.

On Thursday, May 29,
Ms. Flowers’ Honors Englsh class
walked to the Juan Diego Community Center with a recyclying bin
full of food donated by students and
staff of BHS. Together we reached
our goal of over 300 food items to
give to those in need.
As part of a classroom
service learning project, students
learned about their civic resposibilities as Americans, and decided
to give back to their community by
holding a food drive and voulnteering at the center.
Not only did we help with
the food pantry, but we also helped
clean and organize the center.

Let’s give a job well done to
a successful, hard played baseball
season that is finally over. The
baseball team fought all season
facing adversity, controversy, and
many tough challenges that held them
back. But they never stop fighting.
Although many of the games
were canceled due to the weather
conditions, the baseball team still
finished the season with a great
record of 8-5. They finished 3rd in
the conference and have a bright
future ahead of them. The city and
state playoffs did not go so well as
Bowen lost to Agricultural Science
and Momence high schools. Welldeserved congratulations should
be given though, as the whole
team was there and never gave
up when things looked bleak.

The track season has been
a short, but hardworking season
overall. There were newcomers and
busy veterans that really stepped
up. The track team, coached by Mr.
Kelleher and led by Corteris Parks,
went into meets this season ready
to challenge many other schools.
These conference champs
held a season record of 10-1

Although they will lose
some valuable teammates and
leaders to graduation, Bowen’s
baseball team has a bright future
ahead of them with some of the
young and upcoming talent they
have on the roster. When Coach
Nelson was asked about his seniors
leaving and replacing them, he
replied “I’m going to miss all those
bums, but I like what we have here
with Robert and John. Christian and
Jamon will be my next seniors and
leaders of the team and I am hoping
they will step up to the challenge.”
Keeping Track of Running
The girls’ softball team had a
great season. Bowen held the record
of first place in their division. “I was very proud of all the
girls,” said Coach Cook.

Robert Hawkins
All the stats are in and all
players put in work with some
immense performances. Robert
Hawkins leads the team in batting
averages with .560, Ricky Brown
leads the team in stolen bases with
41, and Jamon Larry leads the
team in home runs with 3. Seniors
Pedro Torres, Ricky Brown,
Cory Wilson, Corteris Parks, and
Alfonso Gutierrez played their
final games as high school baseball
players and it was an emotional
atmosphere on the bus while Coach
Nelson made his speech about
what these players meant to him

They may have been shorthanded a few times but they always
put in hard work and effort to try to
win. There were a total of 5 track
meets run this season and there
was pretty much the same circle
of people that always showed up
ready to run and prove themselves
and their athleticism.
Corteris,
Dell,
Kelly,
Donald, and Alex always showed
up ready to run. They had the same
mindset every time they stepped
on the field. The competition was
stunning, but they never feared
anything. Their confidence helped
them finish at least 2nd or 3rd every
time they ran the 4x100 and 4x200.
Corteris had his moments
while running back to back races
coming in 2nd in the 800m run and
placing 4th in the 1600m. It was a
tough, tiring season because they
barely got any practice in with
everyone playing different sports.
Bowen ran at Eckersall Stadium
against Orr Academy, and at CVCS.
This is Captain Corteris
Parks’ last year running track and
he wanted to go out with a blast.
He will be nominated for Most
Valuable Player and has officially
run his last meet.
