Noble
Charter Moves to Bowen
By Elezha Hudson
On Saturday, April 20,
11:30 a.m., the proposed colocation of new Noble Street
Charter with Bowen hearing was
held at the Board of Ed. building.
Members of the LSC, parents,
students, staff, administration, and
any other interested parties were
invited to participate.
To the staff and parents,
joining the two schools sounded
like “a disaster.”
Mrs. Nieto-Gomez,
executive director of the Alliance
of the Southeast, was “disappointed
that her group had not even received
a notice. Most importantly, in the
last two years, four schools were
consolidated into one at Bowen.”
Parents weren’t so pleased
either. Mrs. Estrada, a mentor of
the LSC has two sons attending
Bowen. “The recent addition of
four schools was a disaster and now
to bring in another school defies
recent experience.” Daniel Estrada, LSC Chair,
also stated that he encouraged the
community to try to make it work,
but it failed.
The hearing officer hired
by CPS ruled in favor of Bowen,
“Because of the strong support of
the principal, parents, students,
teachers and community groups,
the Board should strongly consider
keeping Bowen a stand-alone high
school.”
Noble Charter School to be housed in
Bowen’s annex fall of 2013
At the May Board of Ed.
meeting, CPS disregarded the
hearing officer’s recommendation
and voted to force Bowen to colocate with Noble Charter beginning
the 2013- 2014 school year.
In light of the disappointing
news, Principal Kirmes said,
“There will be some challenges, but
also chance for new opportinities.”

The Bowen Arrow Editorial Policy
THE BOWEN ARROW is the official studentproduced medium of news and information
published by Bowen High School students.
THE BOWEN ARROW has been established
as a designated public forum for student editors
to inform and educate their readers as well as
for the discussion of issues of concern to their
audience. It will not be reviewed or restrained
by school officials prior to publication or
distribution. Advisers may—and should—coach
and discuss content during the writing process.
Because the school does not engage in prior
review, and the content of THE BOWEN
ARROW is determined by and reflects only the
views of the student staff and not school officials
or the school itself, its student editorial board
and responsible student staff members assume
complete legal and financial liability for the
content of the publication.
Student journalists may use print and electronic
media to report news and information,
to communicate with other students and
individuals, to ask questions of and consult
with experts and to gather material to meet their
newsgathering and research needs.
THE BOWEN ARROW and its staff are
protected by and bound to the principles of the
First Amendment and other protections and
limitations afforded by the Constitution and the
various laws and court decisions implementing
those principles.
THE BOWEN ARROW will not publish any
material determined by student editors or the
student editorial board to be unprotected, that
is, material that is libelous, obscene, materially
disruptive of the school process, an unwarranted
invasion of privacy, a violation of copyright or
a promotion of products or services unlawful
(illegal) as to minors as defined by state or
federal law.
Definitions and examples for the above instances
of unprotected speech can be found in Law of
the Student Press published by the Student Press
Law Center.
The editorial board, which consists of the staff’s
student editors, will determine the content,
including all unsigned editorials. The views
stated in editorials represent that of a majority of
the editorial board. Signed columns or reviews
represent only the opinion of the author.
THE BOWEN ARROW may accept letters to
the editor, guest columns and news releases from
students, faculty, administrators, community
residents and the general public. We ask that
letters to the editor, guest columns or other
submissions be 300 words or less and contain
the author’s name, address and signature. All
submissions will be verified.
THE BOWEN ARROW editorial board reserves
the right to withhold a letter or column or other
submission and/or return it for revision if it
contains unprotected speech or grammatical
errors that could hamper its meaning. Deadlines
for letters and columns will be determined by
each year’s student staff, allowing sufficient
time for verification of authorship prior to
publication.
Staff members will strive to correct errors prior
to publication; however, if the editorial board
determines a significant error is printed, the
editorial board will determine the manner and
timeliness of a correction.
The staff of THE BOWEN ARROW will strive
to report all issues in a legal, objective, accurate
and ethical manner, according to the Canons
of Professional Journalism developed by the

Ethics for Advisers established by the Journalism
Education Association as well as the Canons of
Professional Journalism. School officials shall
not fire or otherwise discipline advisers for
content in student media that is determined and
published by the student staff.
THE BOWEN ARROW will not avoid
publishing a story solely on the basis of possible
dissent or controversy.

the right to accept or reject any ad in accordance
with its advertising policy. The duly appointed
editor or co-editors shall interpret and enforce

Final Edition Searching for Peace: A BOWEN Stage Production
Principal’s Message
We made it -- the end of the 20122013 school year is finally here!
While there is fairly strong consensus that this has been a long and difficult year, this issue of the Bowen
Arrow is a great reminder of all of
the amazing things we have accomplished in spite of the challenges.
In my first principal’s message of
this year, I wrote about how difficult change can be, but how important it is to embrace change when it
helps us improve.
With a new charter school moving into the annex and a new
Bowen principal, the 2013-2014
school year is sure to bring a new
set of changes, challenges, and
opportunities, and it is my greatest hope that the staff and students of Bowen will continue
to work hard, look out for each
other, and speak up (respectfully)
when things aren’t right as they
make the most of what is to come.
With much love and gratitude,
Ms. Kirmes

And Bowen’s teacher of the
year is… Mrs. Holloway! Out of
all the teachers here, Ms. Kirmes
chose the wonderful Mrs. Holloway
to represent Bowen at the Chamber
of Commerce Dinner held to
celebrate all the teachers chosen as
their school’s greatest. At the dinner, Mrs. Holloway,
her family, and others were treated
to an awards ceremony as well
as a dance selection by the Our
Lady of Guadalupe Dance Group.
Mrs. Holloway said that she really
enjoyed herself and felt most
honored to have been chosen.

job are the jokes, laughs, and just
being able to do what she loves. “I

Mrs. Holloway was surprised
when she heard the fantastic news.
You could say that she was not
expecting to be recognized for
her brilliance in the teaching field.
And do not fret; Mrs. Holloway is
not going anywhere anytime soon.
She plans on staying at Bowen
because she is so enthusiastic
about what Bowen students are
capable of. Congratulations Mrs. Holloway for
all your exceptional work!
Memorial Day Parade By Chanel McGee
Every JROTC high
school program in the city
of Chicago participated in
this year’s Memorial Day
parade. Every JROTC cadet
was required to march with
their school’s battalion. B o w e n ’s
battalion, number 147 in the
parade, practiced marching
and singing cadences. While
waiting for the parade to start,
the drum line had an informal
battle against Wells High
School’s drum line. Once the parade
began and everyone
started
marching,
the battalions started
chanting
military
cadences, which at
one point, turned
into a competition
among the schools.
The parade
took place all the
way down State
Street from Lake
to
Van
Buren.
JROTC Helps Flood Victims
Cooks Wins Art Contest By Elie Muller
Kiena Cooks won the second place prize of $250 in the Law
Day Art Contest sponsored by the
American Bar Association. Her
painting is of a boy looking through
a window, and each window pane
is showing a sign of equality. The
judges liked it because they said, “it
was different.”
She was one of the thirteen
people in our school who entered,
and despite her appearance in art
for a single year, she has no aspirations to be an artist in the future.
She said, “I only entered the contest
for a grade.”
Mrs. Holloway thought that
her work was “very good,” and
gave her advice on how to paint

her prized winning art piece. Kiena
wasn’t nervous about the contest,
but used two inspirations for her
drawing, “kids and Mrs. Holloway.”
When asked about her art,
Cooks said, “I like my art the way
it is.”
The awards ceremony did
not happen yet, but when it does,
she will be given a standing ovation.
Working hard at the Salvation Army Center, cadets pack 500 flood kits for those affected by the flooding rains.
Bowen JROTC
cadets proudly march down
On April 19, there were
heavy rains in Elk Grove Village
that left the whole neighborhood
under water- yards, basements
and even streets. Unsafe and leaving thousands of dollars in damages, the
flood led our Bowen cadets to give
up their Saturday on April 27, to
prepare emergency flood kits for
the victims to help restore the area.
Several cadets volunteered
at the Salvation Army Center,
where empty boxes and boxes filled
with cleaning and health products
State Street
surrounded the area ready to
be made into emergency flood
kits. Given only eight hours
to prepare the kits, the cadets
managed to pack 500 boxes .
Selena Jones, one of the
honorable cadets said, “It’s our job
to give back to the community and
help those in need. Even though
we’re not able to see the faces of the
flood victims, it feels good to know
that we are making a difference.”

pretty dresses and guys with their nice suits. There was food,
fun, and dancing, and of course- picture taking! Ms. Forbes,
senior advisor, got everyone’s attention when she announced
the Royal Prom Court. Everybody applauded for them. It was
a great night. “If I could, I would do it again,” said Breanna

Parks Runs It
Home Run for Perkins Running for Gold
By Victor Avitia
By: Elie Muller and Lana Taylor
Corteris Parks was awarded
player of the month for the boys’
track team.
“He’s very competitive,”
said his coach Mr. Kelleher, “a great
athlete and a strong leader.
Corteris joined the track
team because he wanted to try
something new. It has also helped
him with other sports like baseball
& football.
Corteris ran track in 7th
& 8th grade, and he played other
sports as a freshman & sophomore.
He decided to run track again just
this year- a good decision and perfect timing to become athlete of the
month.
“He had a spectacular performance in sectionals,” said his
coach Mr. Kelleher.
Corteris came in 2nd in the 800
meter run, 4th place for the 1600
meter run & 3rd in 4x 200 meter
run. Corteris’ biggest supporters are
Tony Edwards and Mrs. Hawkins.
“If it weren’t for Tony, I
wouldn’t have even joined track.
I’m honored to be recognized. My
success comes from hard work and
dedication.”
“A self-dedicated, hard
worker who loves to try new challenges is how coach K. describes
the softball team’s star player of
the month Jameelah Perkins. “She shows up to everything we do on time, and she really
cares about the people on the team.”
She won a “best defensive player” trophy and a
team trophy for her hard work.
When asked about who inspired her to play softball, she said,
“My coaches, because if it weren’t
for them, I wouldn’t play.” As for being athlete of the month,
she said, “It feels good and it feels
like I could accomplish anything.”
Jameelah thinks that the
whole softball team was great because they all tried their best. As
a senior on her way to college,
she said, “I don’t have a specific
person that I will miss because
I am going to miss everybody.”
Jameelah’s message to future softball players is to, “Never
give up, and have fun playing!”

Destiny Bickham was
picked to be athlete of the month
because of her contributions to the
girls’ track team. She won the trophy for Team Captain, first place
and third place, respectively in
the 4X1 and the 4X2 marathons.
She runs pretty fast every
day, and when asked if she’d like
to compete in the next Olympics,
Bickham said, “No, thank you!”
Ms. Hawkins disagrees,
“She’s easy to work with. She’s always on time and dependable. Destiny is a good kid with good grades.”
Her sister inspired her to
become a runner, and as for being athlete of the month, Destiny said, “It feels really good!”
Her message for future
runners, “Go to school, don’t play
around, and focus on your goals.”
The baseball team got a
new star by the name of Dartrey
Brinson. This junior player just
transferred from Epic and was
honored by Coach Nelson as Player
of the Month. Dartrey said that he started
playing baseball when he was
young and has been playing for 10
years. This starting pitcher joined
the team because he likes playing
the sport. Although his family are his
main supporters, his team supported
him by helping out on defense and
scoring. However, he feels that his
team could have done better this
season.
In order to become successful
at baseball, Dartery says, “perfect
practice makes perfect.”

Alfonso is Set for the Month “I feel okay with it because our
school is big, but doesn’t have
enough students, although I never
heard of Noble Charter School until

“I think it would be good. It might
challenge the current Bowen
students to be better.” - Amina
Stewart, junior
“I am not worrying about
sharing the school; it will give
me an opportunity to make new
friends.” -Mathew Gipson, junior
“To be honest I really don’t care as
long as they’re not in my space. And
if it helps Bowen stay open, I am
down.” -Alexis Garcia, sophomore
“I don’t like it because they will
have a better education than
us.” -Donald Lightfoot, junior
“I think our school should have the
newer side of the building because
the water is more likable and it was
our school, so we should pick, not the
new school.” -Stevonte Hill , junior
“I don’t think it’s fair that we have to
share our school with another school.
They are going to end up taking it
over. This idea is very stupid.” -Erika
Perez, junior “I think there’s going to be more
fights than there was this year.”
-Damarcus Morrow, sophomore
“It doesn’t feel right. This is our
school and we shouldn’t have to
give up our space.”- Carlos Juarez,
junior. “I feel that sharing the building
with Noble Charter School is a
terrible idea. I say this because
it will take up the space that
we Bowen kids used to have.”
- Montrell Webster, sophomore
“I don’t mind sharing, but I feel
that there willl be trouble because
of this decision. I feel it is best
to leave Bowen as one school.”Ekezha Hudson, freshman

“A hard-working, energetic,
and light-hearted character,” said
Coach Shikany about the boys’
volleyball athlete of the month,
Alfonzo Gutierez.
His first love for volleyball
came in the sixth grade. When
the basketball season ended, he
had nothing to do after school so
he joined the volleyball team. He
thinks that the best part of volleyball
is playing with his friends and
having fun. A junior now, Guiterez loves
the sport. His biggest supporters
are Ms. T (xxx), his parents, his
friends, and Coach Shikany. When
asked for comment, Coach Shikany
said, “He’s dedicated, he’s always
at practice, he’s hard-working, and
anything that I ask him, he’ll do.” A lot of athletes have given
advice before, but Alfonzo’s secret
to success is simple, “Stay focused,
listen to the coach, come to practice,
don’t goof around, and be serious.”
GEMINI: You’ll have a lot of
extra energy which you should
put into vigorous activities. Mars
could expose you to accidents occurring against a background of
impulsiveness or lack of caution.
Jaylen Ordonez played in
the city’s All-Star basketball game
last month at Whitney Young HSSouthside vs. Northside. He got the
honor to be a part of the team by
doing well at the conference games.
He has played basketball
since the sixth grade. When asked
about who his supporters are, Ordonez replied: “My family, old
coaches, Coach Johnson and Coach
Love are my supporters.” Jaylen’s favorite part of
basketball is the competition itself.
Jaylen helped the Southside team
win the All-Star game by 20 points.
His advice for any future
basketball players is to, “practice
every day, and work hard.” Ordonez wants so badly to
one day play with the Miami Heat.
He may be well on his way because
he gotton offers to play with a number of schools including Purdue
University and Wisconsin State.

Boilermaker Sports Final
BOWEN BASEBALL
By Bobby O’Banner
coach nelson celebrates the victory
Coach Nelson and members of the team “strike” a pose for the camera
The baseball team had a
good season. To start off, the team
had a 1-1 conference record- 3rd
place for city teams. Unfortunately,
rain and bad weather caused several
games to be cancelled or forfeited
due to the lack of players.
The boys reached the city
play-offs with a record of 9-16. In
the first round, they ran up against
Dunbar beating them 7-4. It took a
team effort, but a few players really
stood out; Pedro Torres started
the team off right by hitting the
first home run, Bobby O’ Banner
caught 3 out of 3, in left field, and
first basemen Corey Wilson made
spectacular plays. And the team’s good luck
charm, Dartrey Brinson, pitched
a great game and a great season.
Without him, the team wouldn’t
have done as well as they did.
Making to the next round
was losing to them in the 5th inning it was a good game but they
felt that they made small errors. After losing the second round to Prospective, 15-5, Bowen moved on to
meet Hancock in round three. The team said that they
weren’t going to let that loss get to
them when going up against Hancock, but sadly it ended in another
score of 15-5. That final loss ended
the season, but Coach Nelson said,
“I’m proud of this year’s team.
With several returning players next
year, I know we will come back
stronger than ever.”

2013 SPORTS BANQUET
Coach Cook and the girls give ms. K a lift
The girls’ softball team had a
great season. Bowen held the record
of first place in their division. “I was very proud of
all the girls. I felt really lucky
working with the team and Coach
Cook,” said Coach Kilcoyne.
The last away game against
C.V.S was challenging. But with
the support of so many spectators
- parents, teachers, and
students- to cheer them on, the
girls pulled off their final win 6-2.
The girls kept hitting the
ball and played great defense.
Coach K. said, “I had a great
time.
This was an awesome
season that I won’t forget.”
The
team ended the
season with a recored of 5-1.
This year’s sports banquet
was held on June 6. It was an
awesome ceremony to remember
with all of Bowen’s best athletes
in attendance. Ms. Kirmes hosted
the event to honor the students and
their parents, and made the banquet
fun with food games. The evening began with
dinner and ended with the awards
ceremony. very
“It’s
honorable to acknowledge those
athletes who work hard to win for
our school,” said Athletic Director
Coach Wilson.
The students received trophies
and certificates. All the coaches
went up and presented their teams
and talked about the honorable
students who really worked their
hardest.
ByRodney Williams
Because this is the last time
we will see the senior athletes, the
coaches showed their emotions on
how they will truly miss their senior
players. Senior Rudolph Johnson
earned several awards and took
home the all- around sports MVP of
the year award.
Overall, the sports banquet was
a successful event highlighting
all the sports that Bowen has
to offer:
football,
cheerleading,
boys/girls soccer, boys/girls
volleyball, boys/girls track,
girls softball, baseball, and
of course, wresling
