March—A Busy Month for Aiken Driving Club
March 24 through 26 — Windsor Trace Combined Driving Event
The Windsor Trace CDE was a success despite several competing horse events scheduled for the
same time and threatening weather forecasts. The Aiken Standard wrote a great article explaining
what a CDE is and noting that we had 25 competitors and over 75 volunteers.
AWESOME volunteers!! I would like to thank you all for volunteering at the third Windsor Trace CDE. You all were so
kind to give up a day of play or work in the yard!! There was so many activities in Aiken I was scared to death we would
not have the super backbones to make this event successful!! It was hard to believe that all these events in town where
changed to the same weekend as WT CDE. And the moon did not check with our dates for Easter!!! Well not next year!!
So if it wasn't for all of you to come and volunteer for all of us crazy drivers, there would be no WT CDE. Thank you
ever so much!! Now enjoy the spring!!
Take Care, Lisa :)
March 29 - Peggy Dils organized a successful club fund raiser inviting the entire Aiken community featuring the award
winning film ’ THE CARAVAN ’ at the Aiken Center for the Arts. The evening began with a delicious selection of
desserts and coffee. Then David Munro, the movie’s director of photography, introduced the movie with several insights
into the filming. During the intermission everyone enjoyed the raffle of 10 baskets donated by local businesses and individuals, especially the winners. The movie certainly lived up to all its acclaim and awards.

ADC President
As spring approaches, and we are winding down our competitive events. (Two more the derby
final and pleasure show) we can look forward to pleasure drives and bar b ques. Any volunteer
host out there? My hope is to have a pleasure drive at least once a month. In the dog days of
summer we can host another breakfast drive.
A word about the pleasure show, it would be nice to see a large turnout. Janelle puts a lot of
effort into a fun day of driving and camaraderie. I have heard some say that it is too much work
to get everything cleaned up. But hey your turnout needs a bit spit and polish every now and
then anyway. Marathon turnouts are more than welcome. Don’t like going around and round
the ring, come and play in the obstacle classes.
I hope to see you all at the Derby finals, the annual meeting and your horse or pony and all at
the pleasure show.

McGee’s mile
Janice and Bruce McGhee and their family are the owners and stewards of one of Aiken's premier training stables and
Eastern US standardbred racing facilities. McGhee's Mile started as the Aiken Mile Track built in 1936 by Dunbar
Bostwick, Fred Post, and Roland Harriman. Over 60 acres, the site originally included 3 concentric tracks which are
now one mile red clay, 1/2 mile red clay and a 7/8 mile sand track. In 1937, Dunbar's brother Pete added a turf track in
the infield and in 1938 another strip of turf was added for steeplechasing, making McGee’s Mile Track a very diversified
training and racing facility.
The Mile Track was of exceptional importance to the “Winter Colony” theme because its construction between 1936 and
1938 added a new dimension to equestrian activity in Aiken. It is remarkable also as this all happened during the Great
Depression.
Along with the Banks Mill complex of 250 stalls, paddocks, and various barns and living quarters, the track serves as a
year round training facility which has been listed on the National Historic Register since 1984.
The McGhee's, originally from Maine, are longtime standardbred trainers and race supporters. They participate actively
in Aiken's equestrian community. Driving horses is their passion and we all benefit from their efforts to keep
McGhee's Mile a vibrant part of Aiken's equestrian life.
The Aiken Driving Club made a donation in support of McGhee's Mile in 2016 and will renew our commitment to driving
with a donation this year as well.

Mary Anne Boyden Shares Pleasure Show Judge’s Insight
February educationial Night
On March 16th our ADC Education Night was hosted by Mary Anne Boyden, who was also our speaker. As an ADS
and USEF Carriage Pleasure Judge, Mary Anne shared insightful tips to the 25 members who attended. Mary Anne
discussed the judge’s perspective for pleasure driving, turnout, reinsmanship, and other popular classes. Knowledgeable attendees contributed their thoughts which led to an active discussion. Mary Anne did an outstanding job
listening to the audience and addressing the judge’s perspective on their questions or concerns.
Our Club is fortunate to have so many great carriage driving teachers among our members!
