honored with Retailer,
Supplier awards
A pair of Past Presidents and long-time
active supporters of the Dairy Deli Bakery
Council (DDBC) of Southern California
will be inducted into the DDBC Hall of
Fame in February.
Jim Allumbaugh (Advantage Action) and
Debra Zimmerman (Coastal Marketing
Group) were selected for induction by Past
Presidents of the DDBC at their annual
meeting.
Also, Miriam Welch (Albertsons/Vons/
Pavilions) will be honored as the 2015
Retailer of the Year and Barbara Dolbee
(Bonert’s Pies) is the Supplier of the Year.
“Each of these individuals have
tremendous histories with the DDBC and
are worthy of these honors,” said Cheryl
Van Den Hende the 2015 President of the
organization.
Allumbaugh, who was DDBC President
in 1995 began his association with the
DDBC with Normark & Associates before
6
Barbara Dolbee
Supplier of the Year
forming Resource Food Sales, which later
morphed into Advantage Action, one of the
largest brokerages in the nation. He recently
announced his retirement after 40 years in
the business.
DDBC News, November/December 2015
Zimmerman currently is co-owner with
husband Ed of Coastal Marketing Group.
She was DDBC President in 1999 and was
a chairman of many different Council
Committees.
Welch has kept many plates spinning this
year as Albertsons acquired Safeway stores,
including Vons/Pavilions in Southern
California. The merging of the three formats
has created one of the largest divisions of
any supermarket chain in the country.
Dolbee has been with Bonert’s Pies for
12 years and is one of the first ones to step
up when a volunteer is needed. Her
company, which produces award-winning
pies, has been supplying desserts at most
DDBC membership functions for several
years.
Each honoree will be featured in separate
stories in the January-February issue of
DDBC News and will be presented their
Awards at the February 9 membership
meeting at the Embassy Suites Hotel in
Garden Grove.

In other business at the meeting, Connie
Thatcher (Advantage Sales & Marketing)

December. The awards were presented by
Dave MacDonald (Stremick’s Heritage

Gift boxes to Troops were a tremendous hit
October 17, 2015
Mrs. Van Den Hende,
I wanted to take a minute to thank the Dairy Deli Bakery
Council of SoCal for the AWESOME care package sent out to
those deployed. I was amazed at all the variety of items that
were packed into this package. A lot of the items that were in
the package, I was beginning to try to figure out when I might
be able to restock when I reach land again. Being in the Navy
and on the Ship deployed, we are very limited to land time and
the ability to drive to a store to pick up basic items. The Ship
does stock items, however living with close to a 1,000 people,
their limited stock tends to go fast. I know I am not the only one
to receive your care package and I am positive the other lucky
individuals are thinking the same thing and grateful.
I was trying to locate a way to contact the DDBC on the
internet to say thanks, and I never realized that your industry
had such an organization filled with big names that I would
have thought to be competitors. But in reading through your
website and the history it makes sense. Other industries seem
10
DDBC News, November/December 2015
so competitive and always out to out beat those in their field
(music, sports, clothing industries). I enjoyed reading about
vision of the founders: promote goodwill and develop close
friendships, sharing new developments, solve mutual industry
problems, and gain knowledge and enhance the operation of
market deli areas. All can be successful and it feels like a super
team packed with all stars. Maybe other industries should try
and follow your examples of unity and team work!!!
Please express my gratitude to those who put the time into
preparing the care packages for those deployed. I look forward
to returning home to San Diego, going to my local grocery
store’s deli to get my family’s favorite freshly made burger
patties, sliced bacon, sliced cheeses and grilling it all up in my
own backyard!
Thank you.
Respectfully,
(Signed) EMC(SW) Samuel Dent

47th National DDBC Seminar
Rave reviews signal Seminar’s success
Teamwork theme hits
full stride with multiple
participation events
The theme of “Teamwork” hit home for
most attendees at the sold-out 47th National
DDBC Seminar at the Laguna Cliffs
Marriott Resort & Spa in sunny Dana Point
Sept. 11-13.
Along with an outstanding line-up of
speakers, an outstanding array of food and
lots of chances for networking and catching
up with friends and colleagues made for a
highly successful event.
Many perishable food industry
professionals attend to listen to elite
members of the retail food industry and they
were not disappointed during the business
sessions.
Adhering to the theme of “Teamwork”
the speakers were well up to the task of
highlighting the theme.
Kicking things off Saturday morning was
Greg McNiff, Senior Vice President of
Merchandising & Marketing for the recently
merged Albertsons/Vons/Pavilion chain,
one of the major players in the Southern
California marketplace. Teamwork was
right up his alley as more than 325 stores
from three different cultures were united
into one chain.
Also on Saturday, Thomas Cleary, a
military and law enforcement veteran
provided an excellent overview of how
teamwork works in stressful situations faced
by those occupations.
Aarón Sánchez, chef, Food Network star,
and author detailed what it takes to run a
successful restaurant and offered a behindy
the-scenes
look at the popular TV show
“Chopped.”
Pete Hejny, Executive Director of the
Service Deli/Service Bakery of Unified
Grocers, served as the Master of
Ceremonies for the weekend.
Valerie Jabbar, Vice President of
Merchandising for Ralphs Grocery Division
of Kroger, headed up Sunday’s program,
followed by Hockey Hall of Fame player
Luc Robitaille, President of Business
Operations for the L.A. Kings, who stressed
14
Teamwork at its finest was evident during the filling of “care” packages for U.S.
troops serving overseas following the National DDBC Festival Luncheon. Approximately 240 packages were filled with donated personal and recreational
products.
that “hockey is all about teamwork all the
time.”
Seminar General Chairman Laura
Taketomo (Food 4 Less) and Co-Chairman
Lisa Juarez (Cacique, Inc.) had everything
running smoothly with a capable committee
working behind the scenes.
The 48th Seminar, to be held in Sept. 911, 2016, will be held at the same location
with Taketomo as General Chairman again.
The Friday night buffet was set outdoors overlooking the ocean on a pleasant evening.
The Golf Awards were presented during the dinner.

47th National DDBC Seminar Saturday morning
The opening Business Session was well-attended as a full house
gathered for a varied program.
Greg McNiff (Albertsons/Vons/Pavilion) received a token of
appreciation from Seminar Chairman Laura Taketomo and
Co-Chair Lisa Juarez and emcee Pete Hejny.
Military expert Thomas Cleary received his token of appreciation after an informative presentation of the teamwork
required to keep everyone safe.
Speaker Thomas Cleary had everyone stand and give a short
shoulder massage to the person next to them before he began his presentation.
The first order of business was to have each table assemble a
puzzle. Here DDBC President Cheryl Van Den Hende joins
Super King’s Joye Crosby and Damian Valdez in a team effort.
Chef Aarón Sánchez of the Food Network closed the opening
business session with a personal look at his journey and
how the food industry led him down the correct path.

47th National DDBC Seminar Deli Festival Luncheon
Seminar Committee members and volunteers start prepping the
Festival Luncheon goodies early in the morning.
Food stations featuring a wide variety of cuisines, including this cheese table, were located throughout the dining
area.
There was no shortage of desserts, including cupcakes, cookies, cheesecakes, pies, candies ... and nearly anything else
one could think of.
Hot off the grill was a popular station featuring chicken
and bacon-wrapped hot dogs.
The outdoor dining was pleasant despite the warm temperatures.
After lunch, volunteers lined up to fill “care” packages for
U.S. troops overseas. Nearly everyone participated in filling nearly 250 boxes.

Lisa Juarez (Cacique), left, and Lisa Leandro and Joe Theis,
both of Eggland’s Best, with the sign acknowledging their Platinum Sponsorship of the Seminar.
The shopping was good at the Silent Auction/networking hour.
Every item on display was bid on and purchased.
Kobe Beef rib and shrimp was the entree during the impressive dinner hour.
Bar-S Foods always is a big supporter of DDBC events as
Pat Nunez, Pilar Villasana, and Paula Antrasian demonstrate.
Quest provided smooth sounds and excellent dance music
during and following dinner.

Big Cheese Award for November
Connie Thatcher, Advantage Sales
By DAVE DANIEL
Editor, DDBC News
Connie Thatcher remembers attending
her first meeting of the Dairy Deli Bakery
Council (DDBC) in 2009. She had joined
Advantage Sales & Marketing in September of that year and her new associate –
former President and Supplier of the Year
Bob Dressler – encouraged her to get involved in the DDBC … and she jumped in
with both feet.
She joined several committees and then
ran for the Board. In 2013 she agreed to be
the General Chairperson of the National
Seminar which was successful and held in
Carlsbad. The topic was about “Balanced
Living” and while preparing for the Seminar there may not have been a lot of “balance” she said but it was one of the “most
rewarding things I have ever agreed to do.”
In 2014 she became President of the
DDBC and she continues today to volunteer her time to the DDBC and all of its
events. She has been so busy serving the
Council that she just now has time to be
recognized for her service by being presented the Big Cheese Award for November.
As part of that “balance” she says it is
important to keep focused on enjoying what
you do for a living and making the time to
enjoy your family, friends and your passions.
She has been on the brokerage side of
the industry right from the beginning after
graduating from Cal Poly Pomona. “I went
to college to be a high school business
teacher but found myself really liking the
marketing classes. A family friend who was
28
Connie Thatcher
with Sonoma Wines, which was a client of
Bradshaw Inc., encouraged me to interview
with them thinking it would be a perfect fit.
“It was. I love this business to this day.
It has been wonderful for my family – many
of my lifelong friends have come from being in this grocery world. In fact my first
training in this business was from Debbie
Logston (Ultimate Source) at Bradshaw,
who from Day 1 we knew we would be lifelong friends.
“I began my career in the Wine & Liquor Division at Bradshaw in 1979. I was
told I would mostly have Stater Bros. and
would need to sell as many wine displays
in the Inland Empire as I could.
“One of my first store calls was at the
Stater Bros. on Riverside Dr. and the decision maker in that store was Dennis
McIntyre. I begged and pleaded (some
things never change) for him to give me a
display … or two … and he did. But he said
it is all about ‘keeping your commitment
and your promises and if you fulfill that you
will have more displays to come.’ I kept my
promise and he kept his. I liked the challenge and knew this business was what I
wanted to do,” she said.
DDBC News, November/December 2015
She stayed with Wine & Liquor for five
years before transferring to the Grocery
Division, where one of her main accounts
was managing James River Paper and selling Kal Kan. Her husband asked, “are you
sure you want to go from selling wines to
selling dog food?”
She answered, “Yes. It is the right career move for me.”
Two years later, she was asked to run the
GM/HBC Division. “That was my first role
in leading a team and I did that for 14 years,”
she said.
Stu Victor, who she currently reports to
at Advantage, was a competitor at the time.
“He was running the GM/HBC Division
at Kelley-Clarke,” she said. “He was my
toughest competitor. I had Clairol, he had
L’Oreal. I had Duracell, he had Energizer.
All I can say is things are better with both
of us on the SAME Team. He is so supportive of his team being involved in the industry and is a great example of how to motivate people and create a winning atmosphere. I don’t think my passion for the
business has ever waivered. I still wake up
thankful to be in this business and work with
the people that I do. We have a great team.”
There were other changes afoot, first a
stop at ASM in the Household Division,
back to Bradshaw, which was soon purchased by Crossmark, and then to Marketing Specialists, still in the GM/HBC arena
from 1996-2001. She became one of the
first National Account Managers launching
Gillette into the Broker world and setting
up a dedicated national team. There was a
lot of travel during this time back and forth
to Boston where they were headquartered
as well as attending calls in markets across
the U.S. but “it gave me an invaluable experience in understanding other markets and
accounts,” she said.
She later moved to Acosta for an 8-year
period before joining ASM, where she is
the Perishable Department Sales Team
Leader.
“This is a growing division for Advantage as well as an area of growth for our
retailers” she noted. “We cover Dairy, Deli,

Melissa Griffin, Stater Bros. Markets

Melissa Griffin admits to being a foodie. What more could you
ask from the Vice President of Service Deli/Bakery of Stater Bros.
Markets?
An avid traveler, she loves to try foods in different regions and
likes to emulate recipes at home. “I am a good cook,” she answered
a direct question. “It is fun when you try foods in different areas
and fun when you come home and try to make them in your own
kitchen and enjoy it all over.”
Her next trip will be to Garden Grove to pick up her Big Cheese
Award at the next meeting of the Dairy Deli Bakery Council
(DDBC) of Southern California, an honor 26 years in the making
at Stater Bros.
After working at different jobs, from door-to-door sales to
waitressing, first at Bob’s Big Boy and then at Caterina’s Italian
Restaurant, which was next door to Stater Bros. Store No. 36, she
asked a simple question to a lunchtime diner who happened to be
the store manager of the supermarket.
“By then I was married with one child and with a second one
on the way,” she said. “We needed better health benefits. My sisters both worked for Lucky Stores and had good benefits.
“I asked if there were any openings in the grocery store and he
told me he could hire me as a courtesy clerk. I thought I had too
much experience for that, but he added that everyone who ever
works at Stater Bros. starts as a courtesy clerk,” she said.
She had her second baby and after seven weeks, joined the growing chain in July 1989. “After about three weeks, I was fortunate
enough to be in the right place when a spot in the service deli
opened up,” she recalled. “I was ready to melt while pushing those
carts in the parking lot in the summer in San Bernardino, but I
gained an enormous amount of respect for people that do it.”
It wasn’t long before she began to get promotions. She wanted
to become a checker because of a better pay scale and did for a
while until company cutbacks put her back in the service deli. She
moved to a bigger store and taught herself to become a cake decorator, which led her to become a bakery manager.
She stayed in the store level until 1994 when she became one
of two service deli/bakery merchandisers
serving half the chain. In 1998, she was promoted to retail service deli/bakery supervisor. In 2000, she was elevated to specialist,
retail, in the marketing department, which
kept her traveling to every store for the next
six years.
She was promoted to Director of Service
Deli/Bakery in 2006, directly under Vice
President Mickey Gold, who retired in 2011.
She was promoted into that post and continues to thrive under Dennis McIntyre.
“He is a wonderful boss,” she said of the
Executive VP. “He has challenged my team

to new levels and has supported us all the way. That’s the way to
lead a team and he is a great leader.”
She also shares the award with her team in the office. “My team
of Donna, Lisa, Karin, and Ann is tremendous. Their support and
team ethic is what allowed me to have this opportunity. This award
is a team honor and a Stater Bros. honor collectively for all of us,”
she said.
“Our company focus is to differentiate from our competitors
for our customers,” she said. “And that comes from Chairman Jack
Brown on down. He has created a culture that
makes all of us care, support each other, and
be loyal.
“The charities we are involved with in
the communities we serve are very real. You
cannot fake that. If it is real, it shows. That
is not a competitive edge others can knock
you down with. It comes from the heart and
makes a difference,” she said.
She holds a BS in Business from the U.
of Redlands and also completed Redlands’

Produce, and Frozen. We have an amazing
team here that works hard and plays hard –
we all want to win and I think our clients
and our customers feel our passion – and
everyone has a great sense of humor – you
have to, I think, to be in this business.”
With the Southern California retail landscape constantly changing, she has adapted
well.
“We have to be more entrenched in all
the layers,” she said. “We have to know all
the aspects of the business … what is going on with retailers … latest consumer
trends … what is working and what isn’t
… so we can guide our clients and our customers to make decisions where everyone
wins.”
She made a promise to herself when she
got her first job that she never wanted to be
bored. “I haven’t lost that spark,” she said.
“I’m still excited about the things I am selling and the new people I meet. It makes
every day fun and I must say “bored” is not
a word in my vocabulary.
Her friends say she is truly a student of
the business that, along with her professionalism and warm personality, has made her
not only a trusted business partner but a
trusted friend.
But the most important thing in her life
is her children and her family – in Tyler,
Tara and Trevor. All are in sales, but none
in the food industry. She has a 6-year-old
granddaughter with another granddaughter
expected in February and an extended family that continues to grow. ‘A big part of
our immediate family is also our black lab
Buddy, who is always the life of every
party.”
She is a self-confessed “river rat.” When
she was growing up, her father built a
houseboat. “We were always at the river or
Lake Havasu. I love all water sports and
boating. In fact my husband and I bought a
boat before we bought a house … it was
that important.
“Both my parents are very active in our
lives and live here locally,” she said. “I was
the oldest child and growing up both of my
parents were encouraging with great senses
of humor and a positive outlook on life.
They always taught me that if I set my mind
to do something, I could do it.”
She loves spending time with her children and family. “I’ve lived in the same
house in Corona for 27 years and grew up
in this community since 2nd grade. We do a
lot of entertaining with bar-b-ques, pingpong and family events. I also cherish the

bridge in England and NEGOCIA in Paris.
She holds many certificates in food technology, sanitation and food safety.
Her travels include many stops in Europe, including Spain, France, Monaco,
Italy, England, Germany, Switzerland, Holland, and Belgium.
“My favorite food is probably Italian,”
she said, “but our recent family trip to Ireland was special. I really enjoyed the quietness of the culture there. We stayed in Adair,
which is somewhat remote. Everything
slows down. Everyone walks. Everything
is green.
Her next planned trip is Israel with a
church group in February.
Besides cooking, she has taken up some
34
other hobbies. “Now that my children are
grown, I’ve taken up golf,” she said. “I
found it very frustrating when I was younger
and with kids I did not have time to take it
seriously. One of our major events supported by Stater Bros. Charities is the Dave
Stockton Heroes Challenge golf tournament
and I have been able to pick up a few tips
and apply them, which has helped my game.
“I’ve also taken up quilting recently because I have a passion to make baby blankets for homeless children. I have a little
sewing area at home and I want to teach my
granddaughters to sew. I have that memory
from my grandmothers and I want to pass it
on to them,” she said.

We are always figuring out the next fun
thing we want to tackle.
“I am very thankful for the experiences
the DDBC has provided me and hope that I
continue to give back to this industry. Thank
you very much for this honor of being the
Big Cheese for November,” she said.

The list of accomplishments by Tom
Keyes in his 66-year career in the food industry is impressive.
So impressive, Keyes praised DDBC
Historian Jim Veregge (Unified Grocers)
that he remarked after a “This Is Your Life”
presentation that Veregge knew things about
him he could not even remember during his
tenure at numerous companies involved in
the perishable foods industry.
Keyes, 80, began his career as a 14-yearold courtesy clerk (nee: Box Boy) and still
is somewhat active in John J. Wollak Co.
The DDBC was founded in 1960 as the
Deli Council. While not at the first meeting, he soon became an active member and
has continuously retained his membership.
In addition to the comprehensive video
presentation put together by Veregge, two
Big Cheese Award winners were honored
at the meeting.
Damian Valdez, the Dairy/Deli/Frozen
buyer at Super King Markets, was presented
the October award. He was accompanied

The September Big Cheese Award was
presented to Robert Burke, longtime member who recently joined Emkay Food Brokers. He had just returned from a long vacation in Europe as he and his wife Cecilia
celebrated their 25th Anniversary.
In other business at the meeting, President Cheryl Van Den Hende (Monterrey)

the City of Hope. The presentation was
made to DDBC Hall of Famer Cheryl
Kennick (City of Hope) as a result of a silent auction conducted at the July meeting.
The proceeds were divided between the City

In other business at the meeting, a recap
of the September National Seminar was
given, along with previews of upcoming
meetings, including election night in November and the the Dinner/Dance and Installation of Officers meeting at Orange Hill

The Unified Grocers Expo attracted a record number of exhibitors to the floor of the Long Beach Convention Center in August
as 971 booths covering virtually every department of a supermarket greeted retailers from around the West.
The Expo combined two shows from previous years into one
big show in the annual Expo and a later fall show of seasonal
products.

It was founded as Certified Grocers in 1922 in Los Angeles after
independent grocery retailers in Portland, Oregon formed United
Grocers. Independents in Seattle formed a cooperative in 1934
and named it Associated Grocers. Two separate mergers were completed in 2007.
