BEACH COTTAGES MEET…SAN DIEGO…SPRING 2010
Once again, “The Club” received royal treatment from Larry O’Brien, his lovely wife Kerrylea, and the Beach Cottages.
The O’Brien’s hosted a superior gathering on Friday night. Kerrylea pulled out all the stops and served up some
incredible food. Larry and his surfing buddies, Tim & Gino, had the suite decorated with a dozen sweet kneeboards &
bellyboards (some with ridiculously low prices). Steve Hammon kept on pulling bottles of expensive tequila out of thin
air and we (Wayne Gunther, Smilin’ Dan, Sergio Davila, Dino Kallsen, Mark Gannon, and the rest of us) kept emptying
them. Kneeboards were sold, many stories were told, and delightful bonds were forged as the night wore on. At some
point, we convinced ourselves that the alcohol being consumed was actually “neck medicine” for Cary Weiss & Joe
Alphabet, and that the more we drank the better they would feel (even though neither of them were there).
The next morning arrived quite early. Mark Arico kindly supplied the pastries and Wayne Gunther produced a keg of
Starbucks Coffee. That really helped things. We had a good early turnout. The night before, Dino had parked a trailer
full of 53 boards in the parking lot, but, didn’t show up at the meet until 8:00 A.M. to unload it. We think it was the
“neck medicine”. Wayne Cunningham brought a bunch of good deals to the meet and went home several boards
lighter. Folks were digging in Sam Ryan’s stash all day. Joe & Leslie Passarelli showed up with a couple of super clean
Skip Frye’s. Grant & Danielle sold a vintage noserider to a friend. Joe Roper displayed a gorgeous Blake paddleboard
and 2 exquisite bellyboards. Sam McClarty, of “Taco Surf”, laid out about 15 boards, most of them treasures from the
local area. Sam also surprised us all when his wonderful wife pulled up around 11:00 with steaming hot trays of
delicious Mexican food from their restaurant, and proceeded to cater lunch to the entire group of us (at least 50
people) for free !!!!!! Thank you, Sam McClarty, for your extreme generosity to the Longboard Collector Club. We
were also delighted to welcome Mike Wells back to the Club after several year’s absence.
Thank you Larry O’Brien for your warm hospitality and flawless organization !
CALIFORNIA HERITAGE MUSEUM…SANTA MONICA…..MAY 2010
What a great spot ! It was a classic balmy morning and we had a strong turnout. There was a steady stream of action
from early on, as Smilin’ Dan and Tim Dion sold 4-5 boards right of the bat to some non-members. These same nonmembers returned latter with some interesting sticks of their own (see Jason’s score). Tim also sold Gunther a
handsome Malibu pop-out…Erwin & Jeff Eilers hauled a big load up from the O.C…Jeff’s restoration/color work is
starting to get noticed. Randy Beck brought some great boards and hung out with us until late morning. Bruce Grant
arrived in his project chariot, a muscly Chevelle Malibu and scooped up a cheap pair of Aloha racks. I purchased a beat
up Noll mini-spear, from Joe Kennedy, before the board touched the grass. Lucky Robert Brunner got a serious Jan &
Dean board from Mel Evans and a dozen, or so, NOS Waveset boxes from new member Jason Biddle. Dave Mellon
went into a flurry of buy/sell/trade at the end of the day and went home happy. These were just some of the deals that
went down.
Around mid-day, Jason Cohn coaxed me into the museum to see the skateboard display and I was blown away. A
significant portion of the boards on display are from Jason’s collection. If you get the chance, go see the display before
it ends. You will not be disappointed !
Like all good meets, there were last minute arrivals and good deals to be had
The Museum Staff Members were gracious and easy going. We felt welcome from the get-go. Cary Weiss, who is on the
Museum’s Board of Directors, arranged the meet. Cary could not attend due to recent neck surgery, but we hear he is
recuperating splendidly.
THANKS CARY, IT WAS A GOOD MEET !
