Emery Oleochemicals is a successor to the Emery Industries manufacturing business that was founded in Cincinnati in the 1800s to make tallow for oil lamps. It was spun off from Cognis Corp. as Cognis Oleochemicals, a 50-50 joint venture, in 2006. Cognis sold its stake two years later, and the company was rebranded as Emery Oleochemicals. Cognis, which retained other production facilities, offices and labs at the complex, was acquired by BASF in 2010. BASF announced in 2011 that it would close Cognis’s adjacent North American headquarters in 2012, eliminating 167 local jobs. Emery Oleochemicals already trialled polyols derived from tallow oil in the USA, for use in several applications including automotive seat foam. Although these products perform well, some concern has been expressed among processors about using animal-derived products in polyurethanes, eager not to offend consumer's religious views or dietary preference. The oleochemicals will be derived from plant oils and animal fats which are already widely used in biodiesel and detergent production.
