Emery Oleochemicals is investing $50 million to expand its Cincinnati manufacturing
facilities in Winton Hills and create 30 new jobs.
The Malaysia-based company is the largest manufacturer of oleochemicals in North
America. Oleochemicals are chemicals derived from plants and animal fats.
Emery said in a news release the new state-of-the-art plant will produce highperformance products for the automotive, furniture, appliance and other industries. The
30 new jobs will be in chemical processing and research and development.
Emery said it currently employs more 250 people at the Este Avenue complex. In its
release, it thanked the cities of Cincinnati and St. Bernard, Hamilton County, and the
state of Ohio for their support of the expansion project.
Further details were not immediately available.
Emery Oleochemicals is a successor to the Emery Industries manufacturing business
that was founded in Cincinnati in the 1800s to make tallow for oil lamps.
It was spun off from Cognis Corp. as Cognis Oleochemicals, a 50-50 joint venture, in
2006. Cognis sold its stake two years later, and the company was rebranded as Emery
Oleochemicals. Cognis, which retained other production facilities, offices and labs at the
complex, was acquired by BASF in 2010. BASF announced in 2011 that it would close
Cognis’s adjacent North American headquarters in 2012, eliminating 167 local jobs.

Emery Oleochemicals expands NOP capability
16/10/2012
Dr. Kongkrapan Intarajang, group Chief Executive Officer explained that the new facility
will enhance US operations into an integrated site to deliver high-performance solutions.
"Our expansion project in Cincinnati is a timely addition to our global expansion efforts as
we seek to provide the marketplace with a new line of value-added solutions derived from
renewable raw materials, he said.
The plant will produce high-performance bio-based polyols products for the automotive,
furniture, major appliances and various other industries. The company recently acquired
production technology from the Batelle Institute to produce NOPs. Emery Oleochemicals
already trialled polyols derived from tallow oil in the USA, for use in several applications
including automotive seat foam.
Although these products perform well, some concern has been expressed among
processors about using animal-derived products in polyurethanes, eager not to offend
consumer's religious views or dietary preference. The oleochemicals will be derived from
plant oils and animal fats which are already widely used in biodiesel and detergent
production.
The new plant will produce high-performance products for the automotive, furniture,
appliance and other industries and add 30 new jobs in chemical processing, research and
development sectors. The investment is one of the company's strategic global projects
designed to boost its strength in becoming a speciality solutions provider, said
Kongkrapan.
