The weather was perfect, we had quite the selection of events for our members to attend and membership is up. We started off the month with over 30 cars starting the tour that began at Hoehn Porsche, plus we had over 10 of us at the breakfast meeting in Oceanside. The next day 37 of us attended the Padres baseball game in style. We were at the Kona Cove with food, tables and chairs in the shade, rooting our team on to the win! I am writing this from the Coronado Speed Fest, where we have over 120 Porsches parked at 10am! We would like to thank Porsche of San Diego for helping sponsor the tent this year, and the sailors from the U.S.S. Ronald Reagan for volunteering their time for set up and parking Porsches this weekend. How special is that! The same weekend we had our Time Trail at Willow and are ending the month with our SDR Zone 8 Rally which started at Hoehn. If that was a busy enough month for you, October has a pretty full calendar as well. The first weekend of October is our renowned Performance Driving School. This school is only held twice a year and should be on your to-do list at some point. You learn all about handling your Porsche, which comes in handy on our busy freeways and roads, as well as if you want to autocross or do other performance driving events. You gain a true appreciation of what your Porsche can do after attending one of these schools. The same weekend we are having a Progressive Dinner, which should be a lot of fun, and our monthly breakfast. This month we are having the breakfast at Mimi’s Cafe in Mission Valley. Later in the month we will have our monthly Krispy Kreme and Cars on the 12th and a DE/TT at Chuckwalla on the 19th-20th. The following weekend is the PCA Escape to LA national event from Oct 24–27 in Pomona. If you haven’t signed up yet, I encourage you to do so. Escapes are fun-filled with tours, food and fun! If you can’t attend Escape, come out to Cars and Coffee at the Carlsbad Outlet Center in Carlsbad. The last event of the month is the Last Tuesday Social at Gordon Biersch in Mission Valley. We kick off our toy drive for Rady’s Children Hospital in October. This is a great way to give back to children who are suffering, especially during the holidays. All we ask for is an unwrapped new toy and give them to any SDR Chair or Board member. I also want to thank those people who ran for the Board of Directors. We appreciate the dedication and time you are willing to devote to our great region. This region could not function without the dedicated people who volunteer their time to help run this club as chairs and board members. we have a few free Chair positions that have opened up for next year and we would love to have you join the team. I will be sending an email out on which positions are open and other ways you can help this great region! See you on the road..... It’s often the case that the Parade is on one coast or the other, and not everyone has the time or budget for a trip like that, perhaps all the way across the country. Escape provides you with another option. This year, Escape is right in our back yard – Los Angeles. Escape is purely non-competitive. It is a socially oriented weekend focusing on camaraderie and friendship. It is a great opportunity to show off your car, see old friends, make new ones, and enjoy the good will and fellowship of other Porsche owners. Z8/SDR DE and TT Details: We’re headed back to Chuckwalla, but this time we’ll be running counterclockwise the entire weekend. If you drove with us at this venue in January, it’ll be like going to a completely different but equally great track. Online registration: http://msreg.us/ CW1013. On a mild Thursday evening of August 15th that eventually turned sunny, there was a celebration of cars when the Downtown Encinitas MainStreet Association (DEMA) conducted their 15th Annual Encinitas Classic Car Cruise Night in downtown Encinitas. This event was the fourth of five in the 2013 Summer Series. Throughout nine blocks of the downtown Encinitas Village area, many classic and vintage sports cars lined up diagonally on both sides of Coast Highway 101, with many of these cars overflowing to the side streets and alleyways. Over 400 vehicles were beautifully displayed on these streets and in six car corrals strategically located throughout downtown Encinitas: Cardiff Classics (I St.); Encinitas Pizza Company (formerly Giovanni’s); Sofspra car wash lot (G St); The Black Sheep (J St.), the Small Mall (E St.), and the SMOG Test Only lot (F St.). However, the featured vehicles of this month’s event were the Volkswagen (VW) buses and Westfalia camper vans, where the event sponsors wanted to get “101 VW Buses on the 101”. From what I could see, they came real close to achieving that goal. Initially, I took on the responsibility of “A Porsche Parking Attendant” with some Porsche member cars arriving as early as 2:30 p.m., and then was ably assisted by Jim Dunlap, Larry Marshall, and Douglas Dill, among other PCA-SDR members. But, by far the best show was reserved for PCA-SDR members’ Porsche cars thanks to Charlie Sougias and his family, owners of Charlie’s Foreign Car Service. At least 65 of these beautiful Porsche cars of a variety of models and model years were prominently displayed in a Porsche Corral (F St.old gas station parking lot) and on their adjacent Charlie’s business lot of 751 2nd Avenue. There were many other Porsche cars on the adjacent 10 For all the PCA-SDR members and Porsche owners and their families that attended, the staff of the Roxy Restaurant cooked a fantastic sausage and brat BBQ with grilled onions, that was very graciously provided by Charlie’s Foreign Car Service. In addition, Charlie and his family provided an assortment of imported beers and a wine tasting area inside their business, with wines provided by Michael Powers Selections of Encinitas. As if that wasn’t enough, the Sougias family also gave away four raffled gift baskets containing either a free oil change certificate with candies or a two-wine bottle and wine glasses basket. But, the grandest raffle prize was a $500 gift certificate towards Michelin “N” rated tires and an accompanying “mount and balance” certificate. The “Michelin Man” was also in attendance to greet all the arriving PCA-SDR members and to help in giving away the gift baskets and grand prize. And, the Gift Basket Award Winners were: For the Oil Change and assorted candies: Steve McBrayer Don Lee For the Michael Selection Wines and Glasses: Albert Tamayo Rich Fatuzzo And, the Grand Prize Winner for the Michelin Tires and Mount and Balance Certificates: Dick Rogge This year’s event, as in past years, was exceptional. It was such a great evening for all Porsche-loving people that attended. So, for all of us PCA-SDR members, family, and friends who attended this event, we would like to wholeheartedly thank the Sougias family for allowing the club to again use their business facilities this year for a Porsche Car Corral, and for graciously providing our members with food and drink and all the raffle prizes that were awarded. Thanks, Charlie!!! So, if you unfortunately missed this year’s event, make sure to mark your calendar for next year. In closing, Charlie and his wife, Shelly, have been PCA-SDR members for over 24 years, and this family, which also includes Niko and his sister Julia, have had their car business in downtown Encinitas for 36 years. Charlie’s is also a long-term advertiser in our Windblown Witness magazine and specializes in German car service (Porsche, Audi, BMW, VW and Mercedes), but they also provide car service to other foreign car makes and models, as well as American cars. They have a Staff of 12 full-time employees, with their master car technicians having over 150 years of experience. October 2013 11 Volunteer Party Story by Katie Kinninger Photos by Greg Phillips This year the PCASDR Volunteer Party was held on August 24th in the north county at the San Elijo Lagoon Nature Center. The center, nestled on the north side of the Ecological Reserve, has expansive views of the marsh and ocean sunset. The visitor center itself is an interactive museum, with exhibits about the history and ecology of San Elijo Lagoon. The secondfloor observation deck provided us with sweeping views of the lagoon as we celebrated and recognized our volunteers. The venue included access to the museum with information about the parks history, natural plant and animal communities. Food, drinks, and live smooth jazz from Joe Baldino was provided. The fresh food from Le Papagayo in Leucadia was fabulous. The menu included: Barcelona Traditional Paella— calamari, shrimp, scallops, mussels, chicken, yellow & green peppers, extra virgin olive oil, Tuscan herbs & saffron rice; and Wahine Salad—mixed field greens with avocado, hearts of palm, tomatoes, mango & macadamia nuts and mint vinaigrette. We closed with homemade mixed berry sorbet from Mariposa home made ice cream. The president’s gift for each chairperson was a handmade pen with the club and Porsche colors. Special thanks to Bob Hallett who designed, created and spent a great deal of his time assembling each beautiful pen. Great times were had by all the hard working volunteers. Thanks for your dedication to our club. We are looking for more great volunteers to accept a chair position for next year. Our event host was Derek Singhass, New Car Sales Manager of Hoehn Porsche, who with his staff, greeted all arriving PCA-SDR members and guests and graciously treated us to coffee and a varied assortment of bagels and dips. And Derek, to the delight of our tour participants, unveiled, a new, white, 2014 Panamera GTS that was in their showroom. Except for a minor leader car glitch that was easily solved, this 80-mile tour to Wynola could not have turned out any better for the PCA-SDR members and their guests in about 30 Porsches, consisting of an interesting variety of models and years, including about a dozen “Tour Newbies” who were experiencing their first PCASDR tour. This tour was masterfully planned and designed by Peter Dorey and the other Tour Committee Cochairs of Dan Chambers and Monica Bockman, and was led mainly by Dan Chambers. The route was broken up into three legs: the 1st leg was about 25.0 miles and went to Kit Carson Park; the 2ND leg was only 13 miles to Bates Nut Farm; and the third leg was around 42 miles, ending at the Wynola Pizza Express in Santa Ysabel. After the initial sign-in, Monica Bockman handed out the maps and directions. The tour participants were then given some excellent instruction from Dan Chambers on “Tour Etiquette.” We started out from the Hoehn Porsche dealership at about 9:00 a.m. 16 in one large group, but at a slow pace so everyone could stay together. Dan Chambers led the group in Monica’s Periwinkle Blue 1969 912. I did this tour with Buck Bitting in his white 2005 Boxster, which we were able to “slot into” position number three to afford me a better opportunity to do the event photography. We first leisurely cruised down I-5, south to La Costa Avenue and then headed inland to S. Rancho Santa Fe Road. We then headed north on Rancho Santa Fe Road, making sure everyone was together, and then east via San Elijo Road, and then in the downtown area of San Elijo Hills, we turned southeast onto the scenic Elfin Forest Road, going at a slightly quicker pace since there was no traffic on this road. This road eventually becomes Harmony Grove Road, where at the east end, there is a major residential development that has made this area, currently, less scenic. We also at this point encountered a mass of cyclists, but had no trouble giving them a wide berth. However, about another mile down the road, near S. Hale Avenue, Dan experienced a minor stall problem in the 912, but in less than five minutes, we were back on the road, when Peter Dorey took the lead in his VW. Peter then led the group for about six miles through W. Valley Parkway and Via Rancho Parkway to Kit Carson Park, our first rest stop. Luckily, Dan showed up about ten minutes later, but it was decided to have Peter lead us on this Tour, to our next stop—the Bates Nut Farm, which was about another 13 miles away. brought out of her vehicle their two magnificent looking, two-year-old, Swiss Shepherd (brother and sister) dogs, which they had rescued—a female dog named Bali and a male dog named Gus. These dogs quickly became our “Tour Mascots” (It’s not always about the Porsches we own!). So, after a short stint on Bear Valley Parkway and Valley Parkway, the pace now started to noticeably pick up on the Lake Wohlford and Woods Valley Roads, where about a half an hour later, we arrived at the Bates Nut Farm. At this location, Monica This tour was a lot of fun, and even though the attendance was light, it definitely afforded all of us a great opportunity to socialize together, especially with new PCA-SDR members or members doing a tour for the first time, while still enjoying a fun and After a short break at the Bates Nut Farm for refreshments, Dan took over the lead again. The number of “twisties” noticeably increased as we took the interesting backcountry roads that are lined with several notable casinos on the Indian reservations of this area, and then we turned onto CA-76 E. However, since we were running late, the addition considered at the meeting of driving the South Grade Road, a seven mile journey to the top of Palomar Mountain, was not included in this tour. We really didn’t need it, since after passing Lake Henshaw and before connecting to CA-79 S, we were again able to quicken our pace and enjoy some more “twisties” while experiencing very little traffic on the twelve-mile stretch of Mesa Grande Road. After only two miles on CA-79 S, we were at the CA-78 E/CA79 S (Dudley’s intersection), and then only had to travel east for another three miles to reach our final destination, the Wynola Pizza Express at 4355 CA 78, Santa Ysabel, to relax, eat and drink and enjoy the company of our fellow, PCA-SDR tour participants. We had arrived just in time to miss a short, but heavy downpour, and some of our members had to scramble to put up the ragtops on their Porsches. Windblown Witness spirited drive through scenic North San Diego County. An interesting side-note was that throughout the tour, there was not only very little car traffic, but also few motorcycle and bicycle riders, which made it a lot easier for us to stay together in one group. Great appreciation is extended to our tour committee CoChairs Dan, Monica, and Peter for all their help in planning and leading the tour, and for filling it with driving excitement, and to our sponsor, the Hoehn Porsche Dealership, specifically Sean Conner, the General Manager, and to Derek Singhass and the Hoehn staff that helped out that day, and also to the owners and staff of the Wynola Pizza Express for allocating their facilities for us to have fun and socialize together.
