In this year’s WordWright Challenge, held in October, freshmen Allison Dennehy and Alexandra Snow and senior Brian Caferro all earned near-perfect scores, placing among the 205 highest-scoring ninth graders and the 40 highestscoring twelfth graders in the entire country. Junior Michael Nickley and senior George Cellini also achieved outstanding results. More than 60,000 high school students from 47 states entered the meet. The school’s participation was overseen by Ms. Patricia Pflaumer, Ms. Andrea Clifford, Ms. Kimberly McHugh and Dr. Elizabeth Gonsalves. SCHOOL COUNCIL Wednesday, December 17th from 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm — Abington High School Library/Media Center — Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend. Page 3 NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Abington High School would like to congratulate the newly inducted members of the National Honor Society. The induction ceremony was held on November 18, 2014. The ceremony was led by National Honor New members and guests were welcomed by Speaker Jason Scott, a Social Studies teacher National Honor Society Advisor. Society President Nicholas Sideropoulos. Principal Teresa Sullivan and Keynote at Abington High School and past A reception provided by Abington Bank for the Society and guests followed in the high school inductees, members of National Honor cafeteria. National Honor Society Advisor James members as they serve the community and lead Robbins is excited to work with the new within the high school. BADMINTON BLAST On November 19th and 20th the National Honor Society sponsored Badminton Blast. Congratulations to this year’s winners Seniors Greg Killian and Tim Reardon, the Blue Baracudas. The Blue Baracudas completed the two-day tournament with a 14-0 record beating finalists Chris Chirillo and faculty member Mr. Adam Talbot. Thank you to all participants, scorekeepers and fans who supported the tournament. MICROSCOPES FOR A WORTHY CAUSE The Peruvian Children’s Fund located in Lowell, MA is a humanitarian non-profit organization with a focus on children’s health in central Peru. The fund, under the leadership of Dr. John Wang, has embarked on a mission to help save the lives of young children living high up in the lofty Andean mountains of central Peru. Abington High School donated microscopes for accurate diagnoses for children suffering needlessly from parasitic and worm infestations, malaria, bacterial and viral illnesses of the lung and intestinal ailments. Page 4 FINANCIAL AID SENIOR NEWS Cap & Gown Measurements Wednesday, December 17th Thursday, December 18th (snow date) $20.00 Families can begin filing the FAFSA starting January 1st. Be aware of your colleges Financial Aid deadlines. The FAFSA and any other required paperwork must be submitted by your school’s deadlines or Financial Aid may not be awarded. Diploma Name Verification Forms will be filled out by seniors during December. Please discuss the name you would like to appear on your student’s diploma. Seniors should be finalizing their list of colleges and updating their list in their Naviance account. Seniors should meet with their counselor to review their application materials and deadlines and discuss the timing of releasing the transcript and recommendations to their colleges. We recommend that students apply to colleges before the December break regardless of any later deadlines. Seniors need to check their college what materials are required for their admission requirements to know application. GUIDANCE EVENING HOURS PSAT RESULTS Students who took the PSAT on October 18th should receive their scores in mid December. A package of materials will be sent home from the guidance department which will include test scores, an individual analysis of answers, the actual test, and an information booklet. Students are encouraged to meet with their guidance counselor to review their test scores and start discussing future plans for college/career. The Guidance Department offers evening hours for parents who are unable to meet during the school day. One night a month counselors rotate holding evening hours. Parents must notify the office by phone prior to the exam that a student is ill or a family emergency exists. A written note that specifies the nature of the illness or emergency should be brought to the office upon the student's return to school. 2. Students who arrive late to school should report to the office for an admittance slip. Teachers will not allow students to enter an exam without a pass. 3. Students who arrive ten (10) minutes or more late to school/class during exams may be allowed to enter the exam at the discretion of the teacher. 4. No student will be allowed to leave a learning center because of the potential for disruption to exams. Teachers will be in learning centers. 5. Students will be expected to make up an exam on the same day of tardiness unless a teacher instructs otherwise. 6. In case school is cancelled, the exam schedule will follow the same sequence. 7. Students should leave all materials at the back of the classroom so that there will be no question about cheating. 8. Students are expected to stay out of the academic areas where exams are being held. If students arrive early, they should report to the cafeteria. 9. Students will be expected to remain quiet and in the classroom until the end of the exam period. 10. On Thursday and Friday students are required to report to their exams only. Students are required to be in attendance during scheduled exam time for all credited classes. Buses will run at the regular time (1:57 pm) Thursday and Friday.
