It is when the two extremes of hard and soft are wholly united as one body, that the Unshakable form of the harmony of heaven And earth will evolve. We find this harmony of hard and soft within the order of nature and The oneness of the universe. Through the way of Goju-Ryu karate Do, we will be able to express the harmony of nature within ourselves. MEET HARDNESS WITH SOFTNESS AND SOFTNESS WITH HARDNESS. KATA (A BRIEF DISCRIPTION) SANCHIN KATA. THREE - BATTLES, THREE STEPS FORWARD. MIYAGI CHOJUN SENSEI CREATED THIS KATA AS ONE OF TWO BASIC KATAS FOR HIS STYLE. AS GOJU MEANS HARD & SOFT, THE SANCHIN REPRESENTS THE HARD (GO) KATA. IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT KATA TO MASTER, USING ONLY FUNDAMENTALS AND NOT SET TECHNIQUES. IT WAS DESIGNED TO PERFECT CO-ORDINATION BETWEEN MIND AND BODY, USING SANCHIN STANCE AND BASIC HAND TECHNIQUES. A SELF TRAINING METHOD TO LEARN TO TIGHTEN MUSCLE GROUPS, CO-ORDINATING LONG AND SHORT BREATH CONTROL THROUGH A STATE OF AWARENESS. TENSHO KATA. TURNING PALMS AND CHANGE OF HANDS/GRIP. TENSHIO KATA REPRESENTS THE SOFTNESS (JU) OF GOJU RYU. IT IS SOFT AND HIDES THE FIGHTING SPIRIT BELOW THE SURFACE, WHEREAS SANCHIN SHOWS OUTWARD PHYSICAL POWER. A VERY DEFENSIVE KATA USING THE OPEN HAND WITH CIRCULAR MOVEMENTS, BLOCKING, TRAPPING AND UTILISING AN OPPONENTS POWER AGAINST THEMSELVES. IT WAS DEVOLOPED TO TRAIN THE KARATEKA IN THE CONTROL OF THEIR BREATHING SIMALER TO SANCHIN BUT ENFERSIZING THE JU (SOFT). GEKISAI DAI ICHI. ATTACK AND SMASH. MIYAGI CHOJUN SENSEI CREATED THIS KATA, AFTER THE SECOND WORLD WAR. EMPHASIS IS PUT ON SMASHING THE LEGS WITH GEDAN BARAI, ATTACKING USING MAE GERI, EMPI UCHI, URAKEN UCHI AND JODAN YOKO STO UCHI. BREATHING SHOULD BE NATURAL WITH EMPHASIS ON HARD AND SOFT FLOWING MOVEMENTS AND SLOW AND FAST BREATH CONTROL WITH BODY COORDINATION. THIS KATA WAS DESIGNED TO INTRODUCE FUNDAMENTAL ATTACKS, STANCES AND THREE BASIC BLOCKS NAMELY JODAN, CHUDAN & GEDAN (UPPER, MIDDLE, LOWER). GEKISAI DAI NI. THIS KATA WAS DEVELOPED AT THE SAME TIME AS GEKISAI DAI ICHI FOR SIMILAR REASONS WITH THE ADDITION OF MAWASHI UKE, HIKKE UKE AND KAKE UKE. AT SUCH AN EARLY STAGE IN THE GOJU-RYU PRACTITIONERS TRAINING THEY ARE TAUGHT, MUCHIMI (STICKY HANDS) AND SUKAMIHIKKE (GRABBING AND PULLING) AND HOW TO REDIRECT AN ATTACK. SAIFA. THE FINAL BREAKING POINT, DESTROY, DEFEAT GREATLY. THIS KATA CHANGES FROM FUNDAMENTALS TO COMPLEX TECHNIQUES, IT DOES NOT START WITH DEFENCE ONLY BUT WITH A COMBINATION OF FREEING TECHNIQUES. IT ALSO ITRODUCES THE KARATEKA TO ELIMENTS OF TAI-SABAKI (THE SHIFTING OF THE BODY) SEIUNCHIEN. THE STORM WITHIN THE CALM (TIGER KATA). USUALLY THIS KATA IS TAUGHT AT 1ST KYU LEVEL. IT IS A DIFFICULT KATA TO MASTER EVEN FOR BLACK BELTS. UNTIL ONE OBTAINS NIDAN, THIS IS THE MAIN KATA TO PRACTICE. THE SHIKO DACHI IS EMPHASIZED AND IS HARD ON THE HIPS AND THIGHS, IT UTALISES MANY HAND TECHNIQUES BUT NONE INVOLVING THE LEGS. SHISOUNCHIN. THE KATA OF THE FOUR FIGHTING MONKS. THIS KATA STRESSES FOUR DIRECTIONAL FIGHTING, STICKING AND PUSHING AWAY FOUR OPPONENTS, AS YOU STRIKE POWER IS CONCENTRATED IN THE PALM HEEL AND TANDEN. THE OPENING SEQUENCE OF MOVES ARE THAT OF THE TIGER STALKING IT’S PREY, AT FIRST STEPPING WITH INTENT SLOWLY AND SMOOTHLY KEEPING BODY MOVEMENTS TO A MINIMUM, BUT WHEN THE DISTANCE IS CORRECT THE TIGER POUNCES WITH LIGHTNING SPEED NUKITE (SPEAR HAND) IS PERFORMED WITH SPEED AND POWER, THE FINGERS RIGID AS STEEL BLADES. SANSEIRU. THIS IS A DRAGON KATA USING VERY STRONG ATTACKING TECHNIQUES. THERE ARE 39 TECHNIQUES IN THIS KATA WITH 36 OF THEM IN ATTACK FORMATION WITH 7 KICKS. SEISAN. ADVANCED TIGER TECHNIQUES FORM SEIUNCHIN ALTHOUGH THIS KATA IS ADVANCED FROM SEIUNCHIN IT MAY LOOK EASIER TO PERFORM. EMPHASIS IS ON THE OPEN HAND WITH 56 TECHNIQUES IN ALL, A CONCENTRATION OF SPEED AND THE SMALL TECHNIQUES ARE IMPORTANT. SEIPAI. CUPFUL. A DRAGON KATA WITH HALF THE TECHNIQUES OF SANSEIRU BUT WITH AN EMPHASIS ON REVERSE AND BREAKING TECHNIQUES. KURURUNFA. COME, STOP, DEFECT, HOLD YOUR GROUND AND STAY THE WAVES THIS KATA ORIGINATED IN CHINA AND WAS MODIFIED IN OKINAWA. THIS KATA IS A SANDAN KATA IT UTILIZES TAKEDOWNS, BREAKING THE BONE STRUCTURE AND THROWING TECHNIQUES. SUPEREMPEI PECHURIN THIS KATA IS THE MOST ADVANCED KATA IN NAHA TE. ALL TECHNIQUES OF NAHA TE ARE IN THIS KATA, WITH 108 STEPS. THIS KATA IS THE CREATION OF GENERAL YUE FEI DURING THE TANG DYNASTY. ON THE RETURN FROM SHANGHAI CHOJUN MIYAGI MODIFIED THIS KATA WITHOUT TAKING OUT THE ESSENCE, THE MODIFICATION WAS ONLY IN THE DIRECTIONAL MOVEMENTS. THERE ARE NO CHANGES IN POSTURES. THIS KATA IS THE SOUL OF MARTIAL ARTS AND IN THIS PRESENTATION THE SOUL OF GOJU-RYU KARATE. KATAS AND GRADES.
