BUSY INTERSECTION — Decatur Police Chief Rex Hoskins
helps direct traffic at the intersection of County Road 4191
and Farm Road 51 Tuesday morning.
INSIDE ...
Students aren’t the only ones who have
to adjust when a new school opens. Parents
have a learning curve as well.
In the case of the new Young Elementary
School, parents are adjusting to a new traffic routine, and Decatur Police Chief Rex
Hoskins said there are still challenges to
overcome.
“We’ve had some problems,” Hoskins said
Thursday. “One is a backup in the southbound lanes of Farm Road 51, sometimes al-
most to the rodeo grounds.”
Traffic on southbound FM 51 must wait
for northbound traffic to clear before making the left turn onto County Road 4191, also
known as Buchanan Road. Although a turning lane was recently added to accommodate
southbound traffic turning onto CR 4191, the
backup often exceeds the length of the turning lane.
Hoskins said he will probably meet with local Texas Department of Transportation officials this week to see if anything can be done

ALVORD
Veteran’s memorial planned
By JULIE NEAL
The city of Alvord will soon have a
place to honor veterans.
The Alvord City Council agreed
Thursday night to allow the Alvord
Veterans Memorial Committee to
build a memorial in Elm Creek Park
to honor veterans from the city. The
structure would be 100 square feet
with descending height walls.
“We would like to have a little
plot of land by where the children
play because they gave them that
freedom,” committee member Inez
Hand said. “All we’re asking for is a
little plot of land.”
Initially, councilwoman Paula Talley made a motion to donate the
land, but councilman Chris Caster
expressed concerns about approving
the site without knowing exactly
what it looks like first. Talley then
changed the motion to donate the
land, but only after the council has
approved the site. The motion was
approved.
To build the memorial, the committee estimates it would cost $28,000,
but they would raise it themselves.
They have $3,000 and plan to have
the remainder raised within three
years.
To include the citizens of Alvord
in the process, the committee would
hold a contest at Alvord High School
for students to submit suggestions
of what to put on the memorial. The
winner would receive a $500 scholarship.
The memorial would be considered city property and would only
require simple maintenance, the
committee said. This would include
water and electricity.
To raise the remaining balance,
veterans and their families are able
to purchase the bricks and benches
at the memorial in honor or memory
of their loved ones. A groundbreaking ceremony will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25.
In other news, the council approved a higher rate proposed by
IESI. Households will see a 38-cent
increase for trash disposal.

to relieve the congestion. Hoskins
said he believes the intersection
will eventually need a red light.
In the meantime, he hopes the
speed limit can be lowered from
60 mph in the area of the intersection.
Another item of concern is drivers turning right onto FM 51 from
CR 4191. An acceleration lane has
been added, but Hoskins said it is
not being used properly. The lane
includes a solid white line separating the acceleration lane from
the northbound lane of traffic.
Drivers in the acceleration lane
are supposed to travel the entire
length of the lane before merging with the northbound lane,
but many drivers are crossing the
white line. Hoskins said officers
will begin enforcing the rule this
week.

WISE COUNTY
College to offer twice a week courses
Weatherford College Wise
County shuffled its class
schedule for the fall semester to better accommodate
students.
The college is offering
Monday/Wednesday classes and Tuesday/Thursday
classes, in addition to its
evening courses and those
offered on Fridays and Saturdays.
Traditionally the school
offered Monday/Wednesday/
Friday classes, but Assistant
Dean Matt Joiner said they
adjusted the schedule at the
suggestion of students.

they could save money on
gas,” he said. “(The schedule) is also easier for working adults and single parents.”
The fall semester starts
Monday, Aug. 30, but late
registration
continues
through Thursday at the
college, 307 South Cates, in
Decatur.
Registration times are:
! Monday, 8 a.m. to 7
p.m.
! Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 7
p.m.
! Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 5
p.m.
! Thursday, 8 a.m. to 5
p.m.
A late fee will be charged
for registering this week,
but Joiner said tuition did
not increase at the Wise
County campus, as it did for
students at other Weatherford College campuses.
In addition to the new
schedule, Joiner said the
college’s teaching staff has
doubled this year. The school
hired four more full-time instructors — Dr. Cathy Johnson, social sciences; Dr. Lisa
Welch, biological sciences;
John Dougherty, mathematics; and Tiffany Niemann,
behavioral sciences.
Cindy Englehart has also
joined the staff as student
services secretary.
Joiner said the college
continues to offer “the basics,” classes that easily
transfer to other universities, but he’s excited to offer
students additional classes
in accounting, criminal justice, psychology and mathematics.
“My philosophy is I want
to offer these kinds of courses to whet the appetites of
the students so they can
see if this is something they
want to pursue,” said Joiner.
He added that the administration is excited about
the growth of the local campus.

Superintendent

Townsend’s proposal was to
give principals whose campus receives a rating of “exemplary” in the 2010-2011

OPINION
BEYOND
THE
HEADLINES
Welcome back, football season
By BRIAN KNOX
By the time you read this,
football in Wise County will have
officially begun.
Friday was the first night of
high school football in the oddly
named “Week 0” (thank you, byeweek). Barring any cataclysmic
event at the press early Saturday
morning, we should have those
scores in today’s sports section.
Sports editor Richard Greene
held the first of what he hopes
will become a weekly live chat
Thursday about upcoming games.
We also plan to have live blogging from selected games as
we’ve done the past couple of
seasons.
If you live in Wise County, you
should have received a copy of
our annual Fall Sports Preview
in the mail last week. It featured
a retro-feeling, electric football
theme with features on all our
Wise County football teams.
I never played football
in high school. I was in
the band, which gave
me a great seat to watch
some great games, at
least some seasons.
One game in particular
that I remember watching was at a playoff after
I had already graduated. Our school had
just dropped down to
1A, and we were playing Wortham in the playoffs.
Wortham’s standout player was
Leonard Davis — the same Leonard Davis who is now an All-Pro
offensive lineman for the Dallas
Cowboys and one of the largest
players in the National Football
League.
Watching the teams take the
field, it almost looked cartoonish
to see this “man” among boys. At
6-foot-6-inches and 350
pounds, Davis towered
over both teams, particularly our team made
up of players who were
small, but quick.
My school lost the
game, but it was sort of a
moral victory that Davis
didn’t hurt any of our
athletes who would be
KNOX taking to the basketball
court in just a few days,
particularly since basketball was
the sport where my school usually excelled.
The next spring, our basketball
team lost in the regional semifinals. Had they won that game,
they would have played the team
that went on to win the state
championship that year. The center for that team? One Leonard
Davis.
Enrollment numbers
We published first day enrollment numbers in Thursday’s
paper. Student population is
something every school district
watches closely. Not only is it
necessary to know how many
staff positions are needed, but
perhaps even more importantly,
it affects state funding.
It may sound a little simplistic, but less students mean less
money available. That’s why
school districts who seem to be
“wealthy” are the ones that have
a steady growth rate. Northwest
is a good local example.
Accident reports online
Did you know the Decatur Police Department now offers traffic accident reports online? The
department has partnered with
PoliceReports.us to allow citizens
and their insurance companies
to purchase the reports online
rather than having to travel to
the police department.
Accident reports generated on
or after July 1, 2010, can be accessed through the city’s website,
www.decaturtx.org or directly at
http://decaturtx.policereports.us.
To search for a report, you will
need the report number or the
date of the accident and the last
name of the driver. The department recommends you wait at
least seven working days after
the accident before attempting to
access the report, and some accidents could require more time
to process.
Of course, if you prefer the oldfashioned way, you can still walk
into the office to pick up a report.
YOUR VIEWS
Thanks for help
after the accident
We would like to thank the strangers and passersby as well as the paramedics and law enforcement
who rendered aide to Walter at the scene of the headon collision at the U.S. 81/287 and U.S. 380 off ramp.
Various people helped to release Walter from his
sports utility vehicle where he was trapped. Walter
called me within seconds of the accident, so I heard
the entire scene unfold; from his fear that the vehicle
was smoking and he could smell diesel, to the sounds
of a shovel hitting the windows and eventually success with breaking the back gate glass with what
Walter thinks was a sledge hammer. We especially
thank “Barbara,” who immobilized Walter and stayed
with him until paramedics arrived.
The scene was horrific, however all parties escaped
without life threatening injuries. Walter is recuperating with multiple injuries, and we are extremely
grateful.
To those anonymous heroes and angels, we extend
our most sincere gratitude.

A stranger’s kindness
touched family
I’d like to offer a very heartfelt thank you to the
anonymous person who picked up my family’s dinner
tab at Chili’s in Decatur last Friday night. My family
and I had just flown to DFW from San Diego and
were driving back up to Wichita with our new Marine
(my son) and decided to stop in for supper. Once we
got inside the restaurant, several people approached
my son and thanked him for his service. As a dad and
U.S. Air Force retiree, it made me feel very proud to
watch my son interact with those folks.
After we enjoyed a great meal and conversation, we
were ready to get back on the road when our server
informed us that our entire meal was taken care of
by someone who wished to remain anonymous. In all
of my 45 years of living, I believe that was the biggest
act of kindness I’ve ever seen. I hope that person sees
this letter and knows how very deeply their kindness
touched my family.

Fancy signs
are a waste
One thing most Americans would agree on, is that
we are all tired of government waste. Waste, is exactly what I thought when I read in the Messenger about
Decatur ISD spending $100,000 on fancy electronic
signs for each campus.
Are you serious? What a waste. We see it everywhere. Have you seen all the flat screen TVs on the
walls of the high school for announcements?
They say it’s to improve communication with parents. Really? So texting, e-mails, the DISD website,
paper announcements, etc. are not good enough or
adequate anymore? That’s a pretty weak argument or
reason to attempt to justify such an expenditure and
waste our tax dollars.
Think of the irony when you consider a year ago it
became illegal to talk on a cell phone in a school zone,
but now it’s going to be okay to gawk at a sign long
enough to read all the announcements while you are

them up to his campaign reimbursement records for the
entire 18 years. In the period
of time (since mid-2005)
for which there are records
for both his campaign and
WEBB for the House, Driver has
claimed more than $17,000
from the state, and that doesn’t include vehicle expenses. His campaign
has paid out more than $100,000 in
travel expenses since 2000.
His reimbursed expenses include
luxury hotels, airline tickets, meals,
fees and incidentals, according to
AP’s study of state and campaign
records.
Now, get this – Driver got elected
partly because he promised voters
and taxpayers that he was against
taxes and “runaway government
spending.” Promise them anything,
but give them Arpege, as the old
snobbish perfume ads used to say.
Driver told AP he thought it was
alright to bill two entities – the state
and his campaign fund – for identical expenses. Of course, since his
campaign fund pays the expenses,
he admitted to pocketing the state
reimbursement. Campaign funds,
if you need reminding, are donated
money by people interested in seeing
a candidate get elected.
It is completely legal to take campaign donations and reimburse the
state for its payment of travel expenses of elected officials.
Prior to the AP investigation,
Driver insisted he thought double
billing was entirely appropriate.
Driver is a member of the very
powerful House Appropriations Committee and formerly was chair of the
House Law Enforcement Committee.
No spending bill gets on the floor of
the Texas House without an Appropriations OK.
According to a couple of ethics
watchdogs contacted for the AP story,
elected officials who submit the same
expenses to two different entities

City balances budget
Meeting minutes to be posted online
By BRANDON EVANS
Despite a downturn in the economy, the city of Newark followed suit
of most other taxing agencies in the
county and kept the rate static for the
upcoming fiscal year.
“Every member of this council ran
on not raising taxes,” said mayor pro
tem Laura Pixler. “Everybody out
there in the community is having to
spend less. So we should be doing the
same.”
The tax rate remains at 52.7 cents
per $100 valuation in the proposed
budget. The next fiscal year begins in
October. The average homeowner will
pay approximately $700 in property
tax to the city.
“Yeah, some of the cuts hurt, but
eventually the economy will come
back up,” Pixler said. “Cities everywhere have had to make cuts.”
One of the cuts was the council’s de-
cision to combine the court clerk with
the city secretary position.
After steady tinkering with the
numbers at a budget workshop Thursday, the city council went $25,000 into
the black.
“We’re in the position where we can
maybe do some work on the roads,”
said board member Bob Wells. “We’ll
look at the budget again at the (Sept.
16 meeting) and see what we can put
into the roads.”
Wells said Rogers Road, Berke
Street and Pettit Drive need serious
improvements.
Meetings to go online
In the next couple of months, the
city will begin posting audio minutes
on its website.
The council plans to spend up to
$2,900 on a new speaker system for
the council meetings. The system
will also create digital recordings of
all meetings.
“I like that we can put our meetings online,” Pixler said. “One of our
goals with our new website was to
put our minutes online.”
It will also improve the sound
quality in the chambers.
“This is something we’ve needed
desperately,” Pixler said. “We’ve had
muffled meetings and citizens can’t
always hear.”
“Heart for Park”
Pixler encourages all residents
to donate to the “Heart for Park”
program. The city is trying to raise
$8,000 to fund playground equipment at Delora Doughty Royal Park.
The city has raised $1,000 so far.
“Everybody that wants to bless a
park should contribute,” Pixler said.
Donations can be made at city hall.

There have been some
ongoing efforts for state

of such an undertaking is

I talk to a lot of teachers, and I’m amazed at the
number of them that tell
me how much money they
spend out of their own
pocket on supplies for their
classrooms. So, how is it
that we have $100,000 to
spend on electronic signs,
but we can’t supply departments with enough funds
so teachers aren’t spending
their own money on supplies. And now they can no
longer deduct that money
on their income tax return.
Is this some kinda “keep
up with the Jones’” mentality? If so, stop it. Who
cares what Southlake or
Northwest wastes their
money on? Doesn’t make
it right or necessary. All it
does is satisfy wants, not
needs. Speaking of wants
and needs, it would be nice
to have elected officials
with some common sense.
Appears to be only a wish.
Stop such frivolous, wasteful spending that in no way
benefits the educational
process of DISD students.

Driver maintains that
state ethics officials OK’d
his dual reimbursement
years ago but could not, of
course, give reporters any
names who approved them.
He said he was told to just
keep the state money and
not reimburse his campaign
for the travel expenses.
Ethics Commission officials say they don’t provide
that legal advice because
campaign money can’t be,
by state law, converted to
personal use.
Rep. Driver has said he
will pay back the state
for any of the reimbursement he was not entitled to
receive.
He is facing an opponent
to his reelection in the November balloting. Driver’s
campaign website states
“taxpayers are in revolt
against the big spending

The remaining position
added to the proposed Decatur city budget was removed
Monday, meaning no new
staff positions will be included for 2011. The building inspector position will
be handled by part-time or
contract labor.
Mayor Joe Lambert said
upon reflecting on planned
budget additions, he questioned whether any new positions should be included.
He quickly found similar
sentiments from the council, and the position was
removed, at a savings of
$73,000.
However, some of that savings will instead go toward
new radio consoles for the
fire and police departments.
Each will spend $17,500 as
part of a large grant to upgrade radio systems.
The council’s first of two
hearings on the budget drew
no public comment Monday,
nor did any citizens show up
to discuss the property tax
rate. The council is basing
its proposal on leaving that
rate at 64 cents.
The budget and tax rate
will be finalized Sept. 13,
following a special meeting
Aug. 30. The city water district will also hold a hearing
on the 30th.

Board approves
2-cent tax increase
By MANDY BOURGEOIS
Residents in the Northwest school district will see
a 2-cent increase in their
property taxes after the
school board approved a
$1.375 tax rate for the 20102011 school year.
The new tax rate will cost
the owner of a $125,000
property an additional $25
annually, and $30 for a
$150,000 property.
The rate will fund a
$154,370,403 budget approved in July. This year, the
district has two additional
schools in operation, and enrollment by 1,160.
The district increased the
maintenance and operations
rate to $1.04, up from $1.02.
The maintenance and operations (M&O) rate funds
teacher and staff salaries,
utility bills, transportation
costs, facility upkeep and
other everyday costs.
The district’s interest and
sinking (I&S) rate remained
at 33.5 cents. The I&S rate
funds debt payments.
The district’s budget for
the 2009-2010 school year
was $140,202,809.

Self-Control Through Obedience of God’s Word. If anyone is offended
by what I read to be true, then he/she should be mad at the writers of
the scripture, as I am just quoting them. And if he/she is offended by what they wrote then he/
she should realize who inspired them to write it--God himself! Scripture: “Know ye not that the
unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators (sexually
immoral), nor idolaters (those who worship the wrong god), nor adulterers (whether with another
person or another false god), nor effeminate (homosexuals), nor abusers of themselves with
mankind (Sodomites), nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers (slander, abusive),
nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God (the future kingdom here on earth as described
in Psalms 37) (I Cor. 6:9, 10)”. When I read about the rampant issue of recognizing homosexual
relationships as legitimate marriages, I am reminded what God, the ever-knowing creator of all
mankind, thinks about homosexual-type behavior (Leviticus 18:22).So-called educated man
says homosexuality is something that cannot be helped as it is in our genes. If so, what about
a thief, a liar, a murderer, or a rapist? There must be a way to purge one’s self from these
weaknesses. That way is called self-control. Unfortunately, we all inherited some sort of weakness
from our distant relatives, Adam and Eve. God is just. He would not put a burden on any of us
which could not be overcome through following his word. I can attest that this word is very
strong if only we will follow it through the Bible. What did God think of the homosexuals in Lot’s
day? “Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out
of heaven” (Gen 19:24). Of course, today, it is not politically correct to say such but, according
to His word, God considers thieves, fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, drunkards (whether drunk
with wine or false religion), and homosexuals as sinners in need of changing their way. God is
not unjust at all. If there is no way to change any of these weaknesses, he would not require it.
If thieves or adulterers can change their way, so can a homosexual. Jesus said all these come
from within ourselves (Mark 7:20-23, Jeremiah 17:9), but can be overcome through obedience
of God’s word if we will only commit ourselves to it. Believe the word.

Two county Realtors retire
Two longtime Wise County Realtors
are retiring.
Hattie Josserand, considered by
many as the first lady of real estate in
the county, has retired following a 45year career.
She has been broker/owner of Country Connection Realtors in Rhome,
where she and her husband, Josh,
have lived since moving to Wise County. Hattie became a real estate agent in
1965 and obtained her broker’s license
in 1967. She started Country Connection Realtors in Wise County in 1985.
She is past president of the Wise
County Board of Realtors and the Denton/Wise County Association of Realtors. She has also served as the Texas
Association of Realtors director on the
Denton/Wise County board. She has
volunteered extensively in her hometown and has been a part of the development of south Wise County.
Country Connection will continue
operations.

Tommy Hudson, owner of Midway
Properties in Bridgeport, a Realtor
brokerage since 1974, is also retiring and is closing his agency effective
Sept. 15. The agency is co-owned by his
wife, Pam.
“After all these many years, it has
been a wonderful experience to have
been a part in assisting so many families, businesses, ranchers and builders in the North Texas area, as well
as helping in the development of the
communities we serve,” said Hudson.
“It is with very mixed feelings that I
say goodbye to another passing era of
doing business ‘the old way.’ ”
The agency was founded by Lou Johnston Scarborough. She retired in 1990,
when Hudson took over as owner after
a two-year partnership. Linda Brimmer joined the firm in 1990. Gussie

Controversial

Albert Simeons, a British
doctor, created the diet for
some of his obese patients
in the 1950s. A homeopathic
remedy, the diet has made a
recent resurgence.
Although the Dinglers

all their nutrition levels

done under a doctor’s strict
supervision, or not at all.
Karen Swain of Decatur

quick 5 pounds in one week.
However, she used prescription injections, not the nonprescription drops used by
the Dinglers.
“It’s kind of a controversial
diet,” Swain said. “It’s definitely not a lifestyle change.
It’s just a short-term thing
you can do to lose a certain
amount of weight.”

said. “Wes is in better health
than he was a few months
ago.”
It’s also possible that the
weight is easily added back
to the body after the diet is
over.
Despite some of the possible ill side effects, the
Dinglers are stalwart proponents of the diet.
However, the Dinglers’
say if afterward you stick
with the “maintenance diet”
of consuming 1,500 calories
per day of healthy foods,
the weight shouldn’t creep
back.
Epidemic solution
The Dinglers are far from
alone in battling obesity.
Texas continues to rank
as one of the most obese
states. According to Center
for Disease Control statistics, nearly 30 percent of
Texans were obese in 2009,
ranking it as the 14th fattest state, by percentage, in
the country. The rest of the
South, along with Michigan
and Ohio, joined Texas in
the top 15.
And several Metro areas
in Texas are the worst in the
nation. San Antonio, Houston, El Paso and Dallas-Fort
Worth are all in the top 14 of
the latest “fattest city” rankings.
More sedentary lifestyles,
increased access to high
sodium and processed fast
foods play a role.
“I think it’s all the processed food, all the fats and
sugars,” Patti said.
“The sizes of hamburgers
at McDonalds have gotten
bigger,” Wes said. “The portion sizes at restaurants
have gotten bigger ... We
tend to eat what is easiest.”
They said the HCG diet
has forced them to pay more
attention to what they eat.
Their meals consist of organic fruits and vegetables.
They read the labels. They
made a lifestyle change.

Texans make a stand
A goal-line stand in the final
minute preserved Northwest’s
season-opening win over Carrollton Creekview Friday, 21-17.
The Texans had given the visitors a last-second chance with
a fumbled punt, but stopped the
last play at the 1-yard line.
The Texans had taken the lead
with 6:48 to go on a 3-yard run by
Alec Laffoon. The winning score
was set up by Eric Chiofalo’s 28yard interception return to the
Creekview 30.
Northwest stopped Creekview
and forced a punt, but Creekview
got new life at the Texan 36,
though failing to score with firstand goal at the seven.
The two teams seesawed all
night, with Creekview leading
3-0, Northwest pulling ahead 73 and the visitors holding a 10-7
edge at the half.
Northwest rallied for a 14-10
lead in the third period only to
have Creekview strike back moments later for a 17-14 edge.
Northwest made the most of its
218 yards of offense with scoring
drives of 75 and 80 yards, capped
by touchdowns from Dylan Stubbe
on an 18-yard reverse and Jacob
Jones on a 1-yard run. Cameron
Langer converted all three Northwest extra points.
Jones paced the Texans with 87
yards on the ground while Laffoon
completed four-of-six passes for 55
yards. Stubbe snared two passes
for 38 yards.
The teams traded turnovers,
with Northwest losing two fumbles and Creekwview suffering
two interceptions.

Dragons let lead slip away
It was good news/bad news for the Chico
Dragons Friday night at Perrin-Whitt. The
good news: the team scored as many points as
they did in the first five games of last season.
The bad news: the results remained the same
as last year.
Chico dropped their season opener 28-18 at
Pirate Stadium.
The two teams traded scores in the first
quarter. The Pirates struck first with a 29yard touchdown run by Bryce Cameron and
an Edgar Alonzo kick to jump in front 7-0 with
9:07 left in the quarter. The Dragons responded when Victor Velasquez crossed the goal line
from two yards out to cut the lead to 7-6.

Godley mauls ’Jackets in season opener
Godley left Boyd licking its wounds after a 49-6 season-opening drubbing of the
Yellowjackets Friday in Boyd.
By the time Boyd put its only points on
the board, Godley had built a 35-0 lead,
aided by a 28-point second quarter.
The third-quarter Boyd score was
quickly answered by two more Godley
touchdowns before the third period could
expire.
The Wildcats ran wild, with 317 rushing yards to go with an efficient 6-of-8
passing for another 55 yards.
Boyd could manage just 50 yards overland while gaining 116 passing on 13-of24. Jared Cate found Junior Whatley for
10 yards and the lone Boyd score midway
through the third period. But Boyd’s extra-point kick was blocked.
Godley opened the scoring just 2:46 into
the game on a 5-yard run, then added four
rushing touchdowns in the second quarter, including two quick scores to open the
period when Boyd fumbled a kickoff.
The Wildcat offense took a rest in the
third quarter, but special teams and defense each added touchdowns.

The
Bridgeport
Bulls
couldn’t have scripted a better start to the 2010 season
for their offense.
Bridgeport senior quarterback Cody Henson threw
for five touchdowns and 304

five of their first six possessions en route to a 49-26 victory over the Glen Rose Tigers
Friday at Tiger Stadium.
Bridgeport finished with
461 total yards.
“We were not expecting it
to be this good,” the Bridgeport quarterback said. “We
couldn’t have asked for a better start.
“We executed pretty good
today. Everyone was doing
what they were supposed to
do.”
Henson, who threw for
more than 2,900 yards and
28 touchdowns in 2009, finished 21-for-29 without an interception. He threw for 249
yards and three scores in the
first half.

Hodges
runs over
Whitesboro
By BRANDON EVANS
Senior quarterback Tyler
Hodges accounted for five
touchdowns in Decatur’s
35-20 win over Whitesboro
Friday night.
Under a low, blood-red
moon, Hodges ran for three
scores, made one through
the air and even returned
a punt for 55 yards for a
touchdown – all in the first
half of the regular season
opener at Bearcat Field.
“I feel like I did good, but I
could of thrown a little better,” Hodges said. “Some of
my passes were a little low
in the second half.”
Passing mattered little as
Hodges ran wild, racking
up 101 yards and averaging more than 7 yards per
carry.
Head coach Kyle Story
said the offensive line performed well, giving Hodges
room to run and time to
make passes.
Early last season, turnovers plagued the Eagles.
But Decatur went 48 minutes of regulation without a
single turnover.
“We’re always stressing
ball security,” Story said.

Panthers blast past Venus
One game might not
erase the painful memories of last year’s season
for Paradise, but it can certainly set a good tone for
this year.
The Panthers equaled
last year’s win total with a
40-0 thumping of Venus at
Panther Stadium Friday.
Paradise took a quick 70 lead when quarterback
Toi Glover crossed the
goal line with 10:30 left in
the first quarter and Jarett Roper added the extra
point. Glover added a 25yard touchdown run later
in the quarter, and Roper’s
kick gave the Panthers a
14-0 lead.
With 8:44 left in the second quarter, Glover used
his arm to score the next
touchdown when he found
Logan Bailey on a 19-yard
pass play to put Paradise
up 21-0 following another
Logan kick.
While the Paradise defense kept the shutout intact, Roper added a pair of
rushing touchdowns in the
third quarter - the first on
a 38-yard run and the other on a 6-yard run. Glover
added a 14-yard rushing
touchdown in the fourth
quarter to round out the
scoring.

’Dogs get strong finishing kick
Alvord used equal parts strong leg
and strong defense to eke out a 16-14
opening win over Millsap Friday.
Jose Luna, who had already converted two field goals and an extra
point, got the game winner with time
running out to lift the Bulldogs.
Millsap used a pair of time outs
with four seconds to play to try to ice
the sophomore.
But he nailed the 31-yarder for the
victory.
Luna had put Alvord on the board
with a pair of field goals in the second period, from 31 and 25 yards, to
trim the Millsap lead to 7-6.
Austin Bowen gave the Bulldogs
their first lead with a 36-yard interception return early in the second
half. Luna was also good on the PAT
for a 13-7 lead.
Millsap regained the lead on a 14yard run late in the third period for
a 14-13 edge.
Coach Don Deweber said it was a
sloppy contest, leaving Alvord with
plenty to work on. But he was happy
to open the season with a win.
Both teams did most of their damage on the ground, with 114 yards for
Alvord and 163 for Millsap.
The passing games were less effective, with each completing just
three passes despite a combined 31
attempts.
Colton Redman did much of the Alvord running with 102 yards.

The offense was balanced,
averaging almost exactly
50-50 on pass and run attempts.
Defensively,
Decatur
made some big hits in the
backfield and allowed a couple of big plays. Late in the
first quarter, junior Whitesboro quarterback Jordan
Gill connected on a 42-yard
touchdown strike to senior
receiver Cameron Clark.
Junior defensive end
Ethan King was involved
in four tackles for a loss, including three sacks.
“I just played hard and I
made my reads,” King said.
“Ethan
played
really
well,” Story said. “It was
the smartest I’ve seen him
play.”
Despite the easy victory,
there is still room for improvement. The offense
scored no points in the second half.
“At times we played really
well, and at others we could
have done better,” Story
said.
Decatur played without
junior quarterback and defensive back Garrett Muehlstein, who was out nursing
a back injury. Story hopes to
have him back on the field
within two weeks.

Decatur begins title defense at relay
By RICHARD GREENE
The Decatur Lady Eagles took their first
step toward a third straight Class 3A state
title Saturday at the Greenhill/Luke’s
Locker 6-mile relay at Norbuck Park near
White Rock Lake in Dallas.
Both Decatur girls and boys cross country
teams opened the season at the four-person
relay in which each leg runs 1.5 miles.
It’s a one-of-a-kind event that Decatur
coach David Park enjoys opening the year
with.
“To me it’s a fun way to start the season,” said the veteran coach. “It’s another
way to promote team when they are handing off to another runner. It’s also a little
shorter distance and maybe leaves some of
the younger runners with a better taste. It
eases them in.”
The Decatur girls fielded five relay teams,
including Hanna Galloway, Natalie Neigh-
bors, Zuleima Palomo and Morgan Hane
running in the Class 5A/4A race. The Decatur boys had four teams with Pablo Rivas,
Taylor Clayton, Remington May and Travis
Kyle in the top division.
The two teams have been training together since their first time trial in late
July. Park has seen steady improvement
over the past month, leading up to the first
event.
“Practice has gone well,” Park said.
VOLLEYBALL
“You have to guard against expecting too
much. The last memory you have is of the
last race they ran. When they come back,
they’re not as fast. It’s the beginning of a
long journey.
“When you look at the time trail and how
they did last year, it shows they are improving.”
The team’s first regular meet of the fall
will be Sept. 4 at the Marcus I Invitational
at Denton’s North Lakes Park.
VOLLEYBALL
Peaster
tops Sissies
The Bridgeport Sissies couldn’t keep pace
with the state-ranked Peaster Lady Greyhounds.
The Class 3A Sissies (6-4) played a tight
first game with Peaster, ranked No. 6 in the
latest Texas Girls Coaches Association’s
Class 2A poll, before the Lady Greyhounds
pulled away in the final two games. Peaster
won 26-24, 25-18, 25-13.
“I was really proud of the way we came out
and competed,” said Bridgeport coach Lynn
Larson. “We played two good games against
a state-ranked team. We never caught up
with the pace of their offense. These are the
kind of matches we need to get ready for
district and the playoffs.”
Sabrina Garza paced the Sissies’ offense
with seven kills. Madyson Hancock added
four and Becky Grinnell two.
Angelica Reyes led the Bridgeport defensive effort with nine digs.
Jordyn Hulsey made five digs to go along
with seven assists. Tiffany Hawkins also
recorded seven assists, and put down four
aces.
Mariah Clayton finished with three
blocks.
VOLLEYBALL
Paradise
evens mark
The Paradise Lady Panthers evened their
record for the season Tuesday night with a
three-game sweep of Graford.
Paradise (6-6) beat Graford, 25-22, 25-11,
25-15.
The Lady Panthers played a strong defensive match led by Alison Caruthers with 23
digs. Courtney Andrews added seven and
Rachel Runnels five.
Andrews was also deadly at the service
line, putting down 11 aces with her tough
jump serve. She also had six kills.
Makenna Burt led the Lady Panthers
with seven kills. The freshman also had
three digs, three aces and 24 assists.
Sky Mayfield finished with three blocks.
It was the second straight win for the
Lady Panthers. They swept Forestburg Friday, 25-10, 25-13, 25-14.
Andrews served up 13 aces to add to six
kills and 11 digs.
Burt fnished with 17 assists, six kills and
three blocks.
Caruthers made 21 digs. Runnels dug
nine shots.

STANDING TALL — Chico’s Molli Umphress (7) and Malori Moss (9) rise to block a shot during the Lady Dragons’ loss to Breckenridge
Tuesday night at home.
Breckenridge sweeps Chico
The Chico Lady Dragons fell short Tuesday night against the
Breckenridge Lady Buckaroos.
The Lady Buckaroos won the match in three games, 25-22,
25-19, 25-18.
Chico coach Lyndsey Keck said the Lady Dragons played a
strong match against a tough opponent.
“The girls played great,” Keck said. “I wasn’t disappointed at
all. They played tough against a good team.”
Hannah Avants and Malori Moss led the Lady Dragons in
kills and blocks, according to Keck.”
The Lady Dragons followed the match with the start of pool
play Thursday at the Fort Worth Brewer Tournament. Chico
dropped its three matches against Class 3A and 4A teams.
“We held our own,” Keck said.
Chico was back at Brewer Saturday for the conclusion of the
tournament.
VOLLEYBALL
Lady Eagles hold off Brock in five games
After winning the first two games Tuesday, the Decatur Lady Eagles needed another three to get by the scrappy Brock Lady
Eagles.
Decatur captured the fifth-game tiebreaker by four points to win the match, 25-19,
25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 15-11.
The Lady Eagles moved to 7-3 with the
victory that left them with plenty to work
on, according to coach Claire Rose.
“This was probably our toughest game
when it came to teamwork, leadership and
communication,” Rose said. “ We made a lot
of mental errors and just didn’t play like we
know how.
“This is such a talented group of volleyball
players, but we are struggling with fluidity.
We are hot one point and then cold the next
point. These girls know what they have to
do to reach their goals as a team. Now they
just have to act the part.”
Senior middle blocker Sara Oxford led the
offense for the Lady Eagles, putting down
17 kills to go along with her six blocks. She
also made three digs.
Kortney Tompkins added 12 kills, while
making a team-high 12 digs. Kortni Robinson and Joey Redwine posted four kills
each.
Redwine recorded 21 assists. Ingrid Boat-
man made 14 assists to go along with six
digs and four aces.
Lynzee Jordan and Payton Boner dug six
shots each. Jordan also had four aces.
Reaven Thomas also served up four aces
and made three digs.
Decatur played at the Arlington Invitational over the weekend and will be back on
the floor Tuesday at Graham.
