Great Northwoods Journal May 17, 2008 Col. Town Recreation summer schedule The summer programs schedule is complete and registration forms will be accepted. Brochures will be going home with children from school this week. Our web site at www.coloneltown.com will be updated with all the summer information. Please Note: signups for swim lessons and other pool activities will be held on Wednesday, June 4, from 4-7. The following is a summary of the programs we will be offering: CAMPS Basketball Camp (Grades 1-4 and 58) – July 10: Children entering grades 14 will be from 8:30-10 a.m., grades 5-8 from 10-12:30. This fun-filled week is for boys and girls who want to improve their basketball fundamentals. During the week we will work on shooting, passing, dribbling and one-one-one skills. On the defensive side of the ball we will concentrate on man-to-man defense concepts. The campers will participate in games and contests like hot shot, foul shooting, relays, 3-on-3 and dribble knockout. Campers should bring a healthy snack and drink. Camp will be instructed by Mike Curtis. Challenger British Soccer Camp (Grades 1-5 and 6-12) – August 4-8: Grades 1-5 will be from 9-12 and grades 6-12 from 5-8. This soccer camp is now the largest youth soccer camp in the U.S., coaching around 80,000 boys and girls! Emphasis is placed on individual skill development, mastery of core techniques and tactical awareness. Each camper will receive a free ball and shirt. 30 th Register at www.challengersports.com at least 45 days prior to camp to receive a free replica jersey. Be sure to check out the Host-A-Coach Program—those who host one of the coaches during this week of camp will receive a voucher, which can be redeemed for British Soccer merchandise or a rebate for the entry fee. Dance Camp – Exploring Choreography of all Kinds of Dance (Ages 4-6 and 7-12) – July 14-17: Ages 46 will be from 2-3 p.m. and ages 7-12 from 3-4:30. This will be a terrific opportunity for them to create those moves, as well as learn some new ones. Children who are six years old and have taken a dance class will have the option of joining the older group at 3:00. Field Hockey (Grades 3-5 and 6-8) – July 28-31: players entering grades 3-5 will be from 9-11 a.m. and grades 6-8 from 1-3. Children will have a great time learning to play Field Hockey. Some of the skills players will learn are dribbling, passing, tackling and much more! This program will be taught by middle school coaches Jeanine LaBounty and Jennifer Rideout. Players have the option to purchase a starter kit, which consists of a TK field hockey stick, practice ball, mouth guard and a pair of shin guards. The deadline to order starter kits is July 10. Gymnastics Camp (Ages 5-12) – August 11-14: Jackie Schanlaber will be leading this fun-packed gymnastics camp. Learn some new skills or reinforce the old ones. The PASS Outlaw Late Models returned to the tough quartermile track for a 100-lap event that came down to a greenwhite-checkered finish that saw Mike Harnish get the jump on a hold on for the win. Mark Lucas nailed down the win the PASS Mods 40-lap main event. Home town driver, Brian Gosselin battled with cross town rival Luke Shannon for the entire 30-lap Super Stock event before finding his way under the checkers. • In a war of attrition, Tony Stewart beat Nationwide Series point’s leader Clint Bowyer to the finish line to win Friday night’s Diamond Hill Plywood 200 at Darlington Raceway. In a two-lap green-white-checkered run to the checkers Stewart pulled ahead of Bowyer to post his fourth win in just six series starts in 2008. It was the eighth Nationwide Series win for the No 20 team in 12 races this season with three different Joe Gibbs Racing drivers. “It’s this team behind us and this team at Joe Gibbs Racing,” Stewart boasted in victory lane. “We just took it easy in the beginning and tried to bide our time and take care of the car and take care of the tires and have something for them when it came to the end.” The race ending overtime came as a result of a late race restart May 17, 2008 with three laps remaining, when Mark Martin stalled in the second position triggering a six-car wreck that took out half of the top-10 runners and prompted NASCAR to halt the race for cleanup. David Reutimann edged Todd Bodine for third and Steve Wallace beat teammate David Stremme to the line for fifth. Ironically polesitter Carl Edwards, who entered the event second in the series standings, chose to start the race on the outside of Bowyer, the second place qualifier, but scraped the wall while Great Northwoods Journal’s Business Directory Wood Furnaces Landscaping Leo J. On lap 2, Edwards’ race ended prematurely when his No 60 Roush Fenway Ford blew the right front tire and slammed the Turn 3 wall. • A year ago it was all Hendrick Racing heading into Darlington, this season it’s a trio of Richard Childress Racing drivers that dominate the top five in the Sprint Cup Series point standings. Clint Bowyer’s win at Richmond International Raceway moved him from seventh to fourth in the standings. Jeff Burton, the point’s leader for four consecutive weeks, moved down a spot to second, while Kevin Harvick climbed a spot to fifth. Bowyer and Burton have each paid a visit to victory lane this year. The three RCR drivers have combined to tally 19 top-10 and eight top-five finishes. Team Owner Richard Childress likes the chemistry his three teams are displaying. “I think it shows the consistency and teamwork we’re working with at RCR right now,” said the team owner. “We’re not resting on what we’ve accomplished at all, but it is good knowing we have things headed in the right direction at this point in the season.” • Garage Garble • • Some people are saying that Bobby Labonte has renewed his contract with Petty Enterprises, if so the signed papers haven’t surfaced. • UPS is saying it’s not negotiating with other teams for next season, which in the true sense of the word is correct. But aren’t we mincing words here. They are in the sponsor market and are talking. Carl Edwards in the Roush Fenway Racing No. 99 Ford is the forerunner of the teams they are not negotiating with. Office Depot wants to race, but the Roush-Edwards price tag is pretty dear. Edwards is the hottest thing going; when he wins, the patented back-flip gets him more media attention and the resulting exposure than other drivers. Martin Truex Jr. and his future seem to be the hot topic in the garage area with his name popping up with many interested teams. Many thought that DEI would be suffering without Junior in the house but the fact is the organization is much better than last season. • What they’re Saying • • “Our brand is well known. The place is supported by our stars. They talk positively about it. They kind of revere it. We’ve got 50-plus years of comments, quotes and moments to back up the fact that we are one of the toughest tracks on the circuit, and one of the most unique. And we need to make sure everybody understands that.” —Darlington Raceway President Chris Browning. • Next Lap • • The Sprint Cup Series moves to Lowe’s Motor Speedway for the Sprint AllStar race on Saturday, May 17.
