The Jefferson Historical
Society in celebration of the
restoration and new life of the
Nevers’ barn loom is planning to
host a Traditional Crafter’s Day.
The event in planned for July
7th, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In limited space, we hope to
attract demonstrators relating
to all aspects of the textile
process—from animal husbandry to finished fabric.
We are seeking demonstrators versed in the arts of shearing, spinning, dying, and weaving. Other ancillary crafters
might include rug hooking,
quilting, doll making, rope
twisting, with the possibility of
even more.
Please note: the intention of
the event is to be an educational
showcase depicting old-time
methods of the handicraft skills
used to fabricate textiles prior to
the mechanized era.
For more information and to
become involved as a demonstrator on “Traditional Textile
Day” please contact Valarie
Gauthier at 586-7061.

Four generations gathered at the Sue and Andy Buteau residence in Lancaster recently. Sue
said this is the first time all of their grandchildren have been together at their home. From left

Roland Buteau holding Andy’s new daughter, Sophie, Kristen, holding her one-year-old son,

Manhattan, N.Y., where he works for Google. They just moved there last month, and expect
to return to Google in Mountain View, California, next year when he completes his one-year
assignment in New York.

How do you play the bones?
Each month at the Methodist Church in Lancaster, Shorty
Boulet of Whitefield would come to SERVE and talk to Dottie
Hodgdon about his bones. Each month she would ask him to
bring them in to demonstrate how they worked. On March 24,
he brought them, and showed her how to hold them…
He demonstrated how he played them—at times dancing and
tapping his head…
Then she joined in for a test run. (Photos by Lyndall Demers)

Grow a giant pumpkin for
the Lancaster Fair; pick up
your seeds on April 14
LANCASTER — Just as
we’re getting through Mud
Season, the furthest thing from
most people’s minds is the
Lancaster Fair. But the Board of
Directors of the Fair thinks
about the fair year-round.
Planning events is something
that takes the whole year to do.
One part of the Lancaster
Fair is the Pumpkin Contest.
This contest gives prizes for the
biggest pumpkins.
Mike Holland, who is on the
Board of Directors, stopped by
on Monday to let us know that
this year there will be FREE
seeds available for people to
pick up. Seed pickup is limited
to Essex and Coös county residents.
These seeds are Dill’s
Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds.
This Giant Pumpkin Kit will
include seeds and information
needed to help you try your
hand at growing the world’s
largest pumpkin.
The seeds will be handed out
at the Fairgrounds in the
Alexander Hall on Saturday,
April 14 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
These seeds—two to a package— will be free to 150 people
who wish to pick them up. Each
package will come complete
with planting, and pruning
instructions. There will be some
growing tips and techniques
offered as well. What a great
family project.
The seeds come from Howard
Dill Enterprises in Windsor,
Nova Scotia. The world’s record
for the biggest pumpkin is now
held by Ron Wallace of Rhode
Island, who had a pumpkin
weighing 1,502 lbs. Now they
are looking to break 1,600 lbs.
LANCASTER — Weeks

has participated in the Weeks
Medical Center Jr. Volunteer
Program. The scholarship is
open to the college-bound student pursuing a career in
healthcare.
“The intent of the Weeks

their first year,” said Auxiliary

The scholarship is paid directly

Say, did you hear about
the time…
By Ed “Midge” Rosebrook, Jr.
… Margaret Carr shared a Lee Merrow story?
(Midge sent this story that he
received from “the first lady of
Lancaster, Margaret Carr.” We
gladly share it with readers.
Enjoy! — Editor)
Dear Midge,
I thought you might like
another Lee Merrow story to
add to your column.
The Frank Smith I.G.A. store
on Middle Street had, as you
may or may not remember, a
flat roof, which had to be shoveled off in the winter. It was
accessed by a trap door from the
second floor.
One day after a heavy snowstorm some of the young folks
working at the store went up to
shovel it off. Lee Merrow had
parked his truck by the store
and went across the street to
have a cup of coffee at Hicks’
Restaurant. The fellows on the
roof thought that his truck
would be a good place to put the
snow. They then dashed over to
Hicks’ and told Lee his wife
Zella wanted him right home.
So Lee hopped in the truck
and headed up the hill on Elm
Street. He noticed the truck did
a lot of chugging, but he arrived
home and dashed in to see what
Zella wanted.
She asked him what he was
talking about, as she hadn’t
called him.
He smelled the rat and went
outside finding out he’d been
had.
Those were the days when a
practical joke and some good
laughs were a part of life.
Sincerely,
Margaret S. Carr

Fire leaves man in need of assistance
Olivia Grace Hood
On March 16, 2007, Anne
Marie and Jonathan Paul Hood,
formerly of Lancaster and now
of Essex, Vt., welcomed their
new daughter, Olivia Grace,
into the world at 9:50 a.m.
Olivia was born at Fletcher
Allen Hospital in Burlington,
Vt. She weighed 8 lbs. 7 oz. and
was 21 inches long.
Olivia joins her brother
Benjamin, who is two-and-a-half
years old.
Maternal grandparents are
Joe and Theresa Femenella of
California, paternal grandparents are Paul (Skip) and Cindy
Hood of Lancaster, and Terri
and Conley Peyton of New
London, N.H.
Maternal great-grandparents
are Jim and Florence Jacondin
of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., and
Marie Femenella of South
Carolina. Paternal great-grandparents are Paul and Aurore
Hood, and Fred Currier of
Lancaster; and Pat Dupont of
Concord.
Hello,
Chances are if you know Eric
Emery, you have heard about
the unfortunate fire he was in
on March 19, 2007. Eric was
living with his dad and stepmother in Manchester, when a
fire broke out after midnight.
Unfortunately, no one knew
Eric was home because he was
supposed to work through the
night and said he wouldn’t be
home until the morning (we are
still not sure where he was in
the house when it broke out).
Because of this, Eric’s dad
looked quickly where Eric
should have been, and figured
indeed he was not home, and
everyone vacated. When the
firefighters arrived they went
into the house and found Eric
unconscious in the living room.
He was not breathing and was
brought to a local hospital and
then immediately airlifted to
Mass General Hospital in
Boston, Mass. After 10 days of
life support and induced coma,
Eric is now doing GREAT!
Amazingly after more than 49%
carbon monoxide poisoning (no
burns). He will be going home
with Mom and Bob (step-dad) to
recuperate and continue rehabilitation. This notice is to not
only inform those who care
about Eric but also in reference
to a fund his grandmother,
Janet Lavoie, started.
Unfortunately when Eric
turned 19 he lost his health
insurance with Mom and medical bills need to be paid
(although we are trying to work
that out with state assistance).
In addition, Eric has lost everything at a time he was saving
money through hard work, to
spread his wings and get his
own apartment to live in. If you
are interested in contributing to
the fund please feel free to give
any amount you can.
The fund is: Benefit Eric
Emery Fund, Sovereign Bank,
Attn.: Evelyn Powell, 6 Epping
Street, Raymond, NH 03077
(or any Sovereign Bank and just
mention the fund).
Also if you are interested, I
have set up CarePages for Eric
and lots of updates are on it and
you can write a message to him.
www.carepages.com the page is
called “EricEmery” with no
spaces in between his names.
Thank you so much. Peace.
