New opportunities for instant ticket products Many Ohio Lottery retailers benefit from selling Ohio Lottery instant games, which remain the single largest product category among traditional retailers, including convenient stores, gasoline-c stores and other retail outlets. We work closely with our primary instant ticket vendor, Scientific Games, to develop an instant ticket strategy based on an analysis of Ohio retailer sales and best practices among U.S. lotteries. Our retailers do an excellent job of making the sale, and we know that you, our retailers, will benefit by applying the latest market research. With approximately 50 games at varying price points on sale during the year, customers have many choices to fit their play style and budget. Working together and working smarter, we believe we can help you grow sales. New instant ticket schedule planned The Ohio Lottery moves to a six-week distribution schedule beginning with the instant game release scheduled for Wednesday, July 27, allowing for nine, rather than 12, instant ticket launches during year. In another change, instant games will be delivered to retailers on Wednesday (rather than Thursday) beginning with the July instant ticket release. The Ohio Lottery’s Instant Ticket Department, together with Scientific Games, reviewed several of the top 10 U.S. lotteries, analyzing sales and operating practices. Some of the best performing lotteries work on this longer instant ticket release schedule. The change allows the Lottery to build bigger prize structures, adding more mid-tier prizes sought by our instant ticket players. The change provides increased game visibility and a more efficient allocation of marketing dollars. Most important, the change allows you time to learn about each game's unique details to properly explain and promote the game. Base Games The Lottery has a short list of base games that retailers are encouraged to sell, based on the play styles and price points preferred by their customers. Use the Base Games piece listed in Ticket Seller’s Order Notes spread (starting on pg. 11) as a guideline for core games in your inventory, working with your sales representative and instant ticket representative to develop the mix that’s right for you. Base games are reviewed periodically to ensure the best games are in place. Incentive continues for same or next day instant ticket activation The number of retailers activating tickets within the suggested two-day activation period has doubled. It has benefitted retailers in two ways – timely activation has been shown to increase retailer sales and those retailers earn entry into a $500 activation incentive drawing, with nine winners chosen across the state during each activation incentive period. Instant ticket opportunities A six-week schedule begins with the instant ticket delivery set for Wednesday, July 27. Starting in July, new instant ticket shipments take place on Wednesdays. Utilize base games that fit with your players’ favorite price points and style of play. Ohio Lottery Limited, the Ohio Lottery’s first premium instant game, will be delivered to retailers whose swift activation earns them a spot in June's Retailer Activation Promotion. Activate new instant games by the day following receipt of your order (approximately 48 hours) to improve sales and provide entry into the Retailer Activation Promotion. June deliveries are scheduled for June 23; July deliveries are scheduled for July 27. Work with your sales representative on strategies to improve your instant ticket sales. Industry best practices suggest that each dispenser should generate $100 in sales per week. The Retailer Activation Promotion will continue throughout the year. If you are concerned about how to best manage your inventory to accommodate the two-day activation period, please contact your sales representative or regional office. We’re here to help. Premium games Continue to activate new games in a timely manner to qualify and receive premium instant games. $2 Ohio Lottery Limited, Ohio's first premium game, is set for release Aug. 10. Want to get in on premium instant games? Work out a strategy to get your instant tickets activated within the two-day activation period. Your sales representative is here to help. Top prize drawings end The top prize drawing feature, currently on most $5, $10 and $20 games, will end with the release of Ohio’s $500,000 Money Club later this summer. The money set aside to fund the top prize drawing and associated prizes will be used to create more winners in each of these games, benefitting all players. These games will be monitored for the number of top prizes available and will be closed once all the top prizes have been claimed. Now is a good time to review your instant ticket inventory and make adjustments. For suggestions on maximizing sales and making the most of your instant ticket inventory, please contact your sales representative or regional office. June 2016 | Ticket Seller | 5 Agent Feature: Get n Go Mart, Bryan By Marie Kilbane Seckers, Communications Susan Clappe, owner of Get n Go Mart in Bryan, always thought she’d own a business one day. She spent her career managing convenience stores and she knew Ohio Lottery games well. “I know how to do tickets because I’ve been in the business for so long,” she says. She knew what she wanted and her experience on the front lines of store operations gave her a good perspective on the day-to-day challenges and needs of both employees and customers. Her opportunity came in 2005 when the Wauseon-based Sterling Store chain sold its Bryan location. The area around the neighborhood store, located near downtown Bryan, maintained a good flow of traffic. It was an opportunity Susan couldn’t resist. She remembers bringing home just $300 a day in those early days. “I started off small,” she says. Not anymore. The store, which became a licensed Lottery retailer in 2005, has secured steady growth since then. She turned her business, Get n Go Mart, into one of the top 1% of Lottery retailers statewide. Susan calls her staff “The Lotto Masters.” She runs the store with the help of nine employees, including two sons. Today, customers routinely stop by for coffee, lottery, snacks and conversation. Growth potential: Keno Typically, Keno makes up a relatively small portion of convenience store Lottery sales. And, that was true for Get n Go Mart. However, with Susan’s enthusiasm for Lottery and attention to her business, sales representative Margot Prymas saw Keno as another potential area for growth. In August 2015, the store added a monitor to display the Keno drawings. Soon after that, Get n Go Mart added a small table and chairs so interested customers could stay and play. In those eight months following the upgrade for Keno, sales for the game increased more than 900 percent. Susan’s set up for instant games Susan took time to determine what worked best in her store. When you face the counter, the main instant ticket display is to the right of the register. That display holds the highest price points in the left most cubes, with price points for $10, $5 and $3 games following to the right. The top of the instant ticket Get n Go Mart staff known as “The Lotto Masters.” Staff members at Get n Go Mart in Bryan know their customers well. It’s the most important factor in maintaining a successful business, owner Susan Clappe says. She pays close attention to sales and strives for ongoing improvements and modifications to grow her business. Pictured is Susan (left) and employee Dove Caswell. display is set aside for the newest games. These top spots might be empty for a day or two with a “coming soon” starburst to encourage customer anticipation, but they’re not empty for too long, in order to capture sales. To the left of the register, Susan keeps a few $1 games as an impulse buy. Another focus: winner awareness Margot added Keno winner information at the customer play table and winner information for both Keno and other games on the front counter mat. After adding the Keno winner information at the customer table, Get n Go Mart has seen yet another sales increase. “Winner news spreads by word of mouth,” says Susan. Continuous improvement Sales representative Margot Prymas, working closely with Susan, thought the store could do even better. In May 2014, the store underwent a Lottery makeover, reflecting the Lottery’s current brand, with a special focus on its windows and doors. The update included an analysis of the store’s instant sales. As a result, Margot added cube dispensers for the store’s mix of games, going from 42 to 49 facings and began double facing four of their popular games. A year later, Lottery sales were up 35 percent. Instant games, almost always the top-selling Lottery game for convenience stores, saw a 42 percent sales increase. “She (Susan) is double facing both $30 games, the $5 Cashword game, and depending on sales trends she will also double face a $20, $10 or a $5 instant game,” says Margot. “We are constantly analyzing her sales.” You can find Get n Go Mart on Facebook. Keys to success •“You have to know your customers,” says Susan. “They know what they want in their heads. Even if they don’t explain it correctly, you have to know what they want.” •When it comes to training new employees, Lottery game training tops the list. “There are so many games and many choices of play,” says Susan. Pick 3, Pick 4 and Pick 5 get a great deal of attention because of their many play style choices. •Her favorite terminal report? The weekly summary. “I like how I can print it out to see how I’m doing anytime throughout the week,” she says. Advice? She’d like to see the Lottery offer some type of pre-paid card to help pay winning customers, easing the need for cash on hand. A sales representative’s perspective on ways to impact a retailer’s sales Ticket activation. “I would like to stress that getting new tickets out within a day of delivery is essential for raising sales,” says sales representative Margot Prymas. “I urge representatives to work with their retailers to help them get new tickets out as fast as possible. This is also how Susan has raised sales.” Curbside appeal. “The entrance to a store needs to be neat and clean so it’s easy on the customer’s eyes. When the doors and windows are cluttered with signs and stickers, it’s too complicated for a person to even register what they are seeing and they end up not seeing anything,” says Margot. “When a door and window are cleaned up and everything is neat and in place it’s easier for a customer to even notice a sign or advertisement.” Summertime opportunities through MyLotto Rewards® The iHeartRadio Music Festival promotion A once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for customers. Running July 11-Aug. 15 The iHeartRadio Music Festival, bringing together well-known and emerging artists in rock, country, hip hop, dance and pop, is calling Ohio Lottery customers to play. This special second-chance drawing for Ohio Lottery customers runs July 11 through Aug. 15, 2016. How to Enter Make a $5 ticket purchase for Pick 3, Pick 4, Pick 5 or Rolling Cash 5 and enter any non-winning tickets into the iHeartRadio Music Festival drawing, accessible via MyLotto Rewards®. Four lucky customers will win a trip to the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas Sept. 23-26, 2016. Other prizes include $500 cash gift cards and iTune music downloads. Additional information and entry available through MyLotto Rewards®: www.ohiolottery.com/mylotto An organized, easy-to-follow instant ticket dispenser. “This is why it is so important to follow a plan-o-gram,” says Margot. “We read top left to right, focusing on the left. This is why the highest dollar games need to be on the top and left. “Susan, the owner of Get n Go Mart, places all top dollar games to the left, which is closest to the register,” she says. “If your games are all mixed up, it’s too hard on the eyes and difficult for the customer to find what they want. Eye level sells the best. “The stores follow plan-o-grams for other store products, so why would you not do this for everything, including Lottery?” says Margot. Their corner of the bar sits next to a set of windows that looks out onto the street where Route 161 and Cleveland Avenue meet. Get the drift? They play Keno on that corner and that’s how the term “Keno Corner” was born. ® Call Center Hours 1-800-686-4208 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Joe, a father of three and lifelong north end resident, operates an awards and tee shirt business out of his home. He stops by to see his friends at Roosters 161 a couple times a week and plays with a local rock-n-roll pick up band, “Chasin Katz with Stix.” During these hours, you can talk to a live person about issues concerning your Lottery business.
