NVNA 2012 Annual Report
Reputation Reliability Results 2012 Annual Report From the Chair and CEO Dear Friends, Reputation May you live in interesting times. Well, we certainly do - especially when it comes to health care! The 2012 election, an economy still struggling to gain a solid foothold and major cuts to Medicare all made 2012 a very interesting year for the Natick VNA. However, we strive to maintain consistency and strength among chaos. We’ve built our REPUTATION on the RELIABILITY of our staff and the RESULTS our patients achieve. Perhaps the best evidence of that is our recognition as a Top Agency of the 2012 HomeCare Elite. Based on exceptional patient outcomes, a strong patient experience, quality improvement methods, process measure implementation and financial performance, the top 25% of Medicare-certified home care agencies were named as Top Agencies. We are proud that our staff live and breathe the mission of the Natick VNA–to provide caring and compassionate multi-disciplinary health care services to patients in their homes–and have been recognized for the superb job they do. If you dig a little deeper, this achievement is backed by Medicare’s own Home Health Compare. In 22 different measures that include how patients improved at managing daily activities, how staff treated pain and other symptoms, how well pressure sores were prevented and wounds were treated, how staff kept patients safe and prevented unplanned hospital care, the Natick VNA exceeded both the national and state averages. What an accomplishment! 2 Reliabil Results As we look to 2013, the challenges don’t go away. Home care providers face a two percent rate cut early in the year as Medicare implements over $700 billion in cuts. There are several other options being considered as well, including additional rate cuts and structural changes which may raise the eligibility age and/or require a co-payment for home health care services. Of course, we will keep a close eye on these proposed changes. In the meantime, we will continue to focus on continually improving the care we provide to our patients and building on our strong reputation. Throughout this Annual Report, you will read about that reputation and results our patients reliably achieve. We are proud to serve our community and our patients. We are proud to serve you and we truly appreciate your support. Sincerely, lity Michael J. Murphy, Chair Board of Trustees Judith Boyko, MBA, MS, RN Chief Executive Officer 3 We’ve built our Reputation on the Reliability of our staff Reputation > I had my knee surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. When I was ready to go home, I asked about home care and mentioned the Natick VNA. Well, let me tell you, the response from everybody at the Brigham was positive. You are well-known and have an excellent reputation!! > I couldn’t be in better hands, which is exactly what I told my medical team at Mass General during a recent in-patient stay. > The Natick VNA was highly recommended to me by a friend. My nurse was great! She knows her job, made me feel comfortable and took very good care of me. > Being in the health care field myself, and having experienced your services first-hand, I will continue to recommend you. 4 Reliability > Vicki let me know in advance what time to expect her visit. If she was going to be late, she called to alert me of the new time. She was very sensitive to my needs and responded to them in a very warm and nurturing manner. Not only was she very professional and knowledgeable, but I found her to be very compassionate and caring. > Everything seemed to work seamlessly in a well-coordinated team. > This is the third time I have crossed paths with the Natick VNA. After my most recent surgery, I was assigned a physical therapist who was a delight to work with. She was always on time, competent, conscientious, thorough and caring. She patiently answered all of my questions and I looked forward to seeing her each week. and the Results our patients achieve. > When a minor problem arose, our nurse revised her schedule to accommodate check-ups and was in touch with our doctor. Results > You responded immediately to all my needs. My recovery has been fantastic because I had a great surgeon and the Natick VNA follow-up. > I cannot tell you how much my physical therapist helped me recover. Not only does she have all the skills and knowledge needed for her profession, she has that something extra. She inspired me to do more than I thought I could. There were several times I was discouraged, and she always reassured me in a concrete, logical way. Although she has other patients and a busy schedule, it was obvious she was thinking of ways to improve my outcome on her own time. She always seemed to have fresh ideas which she discussed with my doctor. The Natick VNA was named as a Top Agency of the 2012 HomeCare Elite in recognition of exceptional patient outcomes, patient experience, quality improvement, process measure implementation and financial performance. “Being recognized among the top 25% of Medicare-certified home care agencies across the country illustrates our staff’s commitment to excellence in providing care to people in their own homes.” - Natick VNA CEO Judith Boyko 5 What’s your legacy? When you provide for the Natick VNA in your estate plans, you help keep people safe and healthy at home. Even if you have a modest estate, you can leave a charitable bequest in your will. Bequests can be for a specific dollar amount, a percentage of the estate, or any remaining assets after your family has been provided for. Some people leave a paid life insurance policy or other financial investments, such as stocks, bonds or CDs. In addition to providing tax savings to your estate, bequests also allow you to continue to support the Natick VNA, even after you are gone.
