September Greetings, Fall is coming! We had a great August. We had wonderful weather for both our picnic and our annual show at Luther! Lets hope our luck holds out for the rest of our events before we put the rides away! Our show this year had a pretty good turn-out and I really appreciated all our volunteers. Thanks to all who helped make this show great. Our next event is the Lookout Trophy show on the 3rd. Terry and Cathie run a great show, then our monthly meeting the 10th at the AutoMotorPlex. Don’t forget, we won’t have food there, so be sure to plan ahead for dinner. Our annual Apple Run is scheduled for Oct 1, so I’m sure Dick and Laurie Zins will have all the details for us at our meeting. I’m looking forward to seeing you at the Lookout and AutoMotorPlex; till then, happy cruising. Laureen Page 2 September, 2016 MINUTES FROM THE MEETING On August 6th, 2016 President: Laureen thanked Bob and Shelly for scrambling to find a new spot for the picnic this year. It was very nice. She also thanked everyone who donated items for the goody bags for the 2016 SSS car show as well as everyone who came early to stuff them today. Chris Johnson: Cathie shared a little about Chris Johnsons' passing. He was at the Lookout planning a benefit for a golf tournament for that Sunday, he got up from his chair and collapsed. First Responders did get a heartbeat but he didn't survive. CJ was with him. Chris’ children stated that they went to his house and found an envelope with his wishes for his funeral and a celebration of his life at the Lookout. Cathie will have Shelly put a website link per request of Chris' daughter for anyone in the car club who does any volunteer work to register it in his honor. He was always doing charitable work and doing for others. He was just made an honorary member of the Rotary Club this year. Terry contacted all of the board members and they all agreed to have a memorial trophy made in Chris' honor to be presented at SSS as Dealers Choice. The family will do the judging and presenting of the trophy. Terry also asked Chris' son if he would bring his dads Firebird to SSS and he said he would be glad to. A big thank you to Terry, Cathie, and Shelly for pulling it together on such a short notice. Secretary: The minutes were approved as written. Treasurer: Sandy shared the financials. The check she wrote to Make A Wish was for $2,952.50. The breakdown profit figures were 50/50 $365.00, gates $700.00, donations $194.00, silent auction $1,854.00, pizza/pop $432.50. We had expenses of pizza/pop $259.00, door prizes $196.00 (which wasn't all for this show). Vice President: Fred had nothing at this point but reminded everyone that it was poker night. Public Relations: Clay found a pair of reading glasses after the Silent Auction last month, so if anyone is missing a pair, see Clay. Clay also had extra placards that say “DO NOT TOUCH” left over from the goody bag stuffing for anyone who wants one for their own car. Rock Auto.com donated refrigerator magnets and fliers for the goody bags as well as $25.00 gift certificate for the SSS show. Membership: 47 members were here at the picnic. Carolea stated that Chris Johnson had just joined the club and he would have been the 70th member. We also have two new members, Joe and Sue Sorenson, in attendance. Welcome! Editor: Jim had nothing to report. Web Master: Shelly was taking pictures today and she hopes to have them on line in the next couple days. Sunshine: Marge was not in attendance. Laureen shared that Steve is recovering from shoulder surgery and Pat just had knee replacement surgery and should be going home today or tomorrow. Char and Mike are out at Lake Minnetonka celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations! Historian: Kirby is with Pat and unable to attend the meeting. Committee Reports: Lookout Trophy Show: September 3rd, 2016. The trophies and dash plaques have been ordered from MPL and Terry will be picking them up when ready. Apple Run: Dick is waiting for the orchards to open up to find one for the run. He is also looking into a side tour that we maybe haven't done. Sweet Summer Sunday: Laureen passed around the sign-up sheet for volunteers for Sunday. Chopper had a sign-up sheet for moving of cars from the Luther lot on Saturday. Volunteers have to be there at 5 pm Saturday. Terry asked Luther if they needed help moving them back and they said no. Everyone volunteering for the show on Sunday needs to be there by 8am. Old Business: Ronald McDonal House: Char did check with RMH and they still have a 4hr window and she took our name off of the volunteer calendar. Laureen brought up donating to RMH food shelf but it wasn't embraced. She did say that we can keep collecting pop tabs to give to Kirby. Silent Auction: Lavon wanted to thank everyone who helped with the auction. She stated that Carolea did a walk around to see about duplicate bidders to have an idea of amounts due. Lavon thanked Jim for the Silent Auction sign. She named some of the more popular items, the airbrushed garbage can, the liquor basket, the Kirby Pucket poster, the wine pails, the canning and cooking basket (Margaret), and 32 inch TV (Carrie), Paradise and Dehns gift cards, and the necklace that Mike J. had made from Bruneau Jasper from Idaho. Suggestions for next year were to add the verbage: “make checks payable to” and “please be generous in your bids as all proceeds go to charity”. Lavon also suggested to add to the bid sheets if the item is alcohol that the winner has to be 21 years of age or older. She also recommended to have a small committee meeting 5-10 minutes before the end of bidding to make sure everyone is on the same page. Cathie shared her idea again of selling tickets to the attendees, then they put the tickets in baskets for the items they want to try and win. Then, at the end, a ticket gets picked from each basket and the ticket holder gets that prize. No one has to bid and when they do this at the legion they have doubled their money. The idea was brought up about it being gambling and it will be looked into. New Business: Sweet Corn: Steve brought up some freshly picked sweet corn to sell, 13 cobs for 6 dollars. By-Laws: Lavon brought up that she was looking at the club website and the by-laws are from 2008 and they were updated in 2012. Mainly about how we vote for Car of the Year, the dollar amount for bereavement, and the pro-rated membership fee if someone joins mid-year. Shelly said whoever has the most recent additions please send them to her and she will update the website. Chevy Classic Car Club: Paul wanted to remind everyone that he is the MN state representative of the Chevy Classic Car Club subsidiary of Ecklers. He can answer any questions about the club or if you are interested in joining. New Tri-Five Club: Steve asked if anyone had joined the new American Tri-Five Association Car Club through DanChuks. Dan said he did and is heading down to Bowling Green next week. Steve said he did join and received their magazine. This is their second year in Bowling Green and they already have 2,000 cars registered for the event. Wagner’s Chicken: A big thank you to Brian for picking up the chicken from Wagners. Also, a big thank you to Jim Wagner for preparing the chicken for us again this year. September Meeting: The next meeting will be on September 10th, 2016 at the AutoMotorPlex in Chanhassen. Meeting Adjourned: A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. All were in favor. Meeting adjourned. Respectfully submitted, Lea Rounsville, Secretary Page 4 September, 2016 OUT & ABOUT with the Cub Reporter, aka Clay Hagen SCHMOOZIN' AT THE SUMMER PICNIC Originally, we had booked the Eveland Farm, but they double-booked the date, so we had to select another location. Thankfully, Bob & Shelly found a very nice picnic pavilion available at the Mississippi River Community Park in Anoka and we grabbed it immediately. It turned out to be a perfect Summer day and some of us arrived early to stuff the Goodie Bags for our Sweet Summer Sunday show coming up on August 14th. Many hands made quick work of that project and we were done before 1 pm. So then we turned our attention to another important subject --- Food! Brian M brought the Broasted Chicken from Wagner's Drive-in and it was fabulous --- The best ever! Truly fingerlickin' good! Of course everyone brought a wonderful assortment of salads, fruit, cookies, and pies to share. Thank you, Bob & Shelly for your quick action in locating this nice place for us to have our Summer Picnic! SWEET SUMMER SUNDAY CAR SHOW How sweeeettt it was! On Sunday, August 14th we held our annual car show at Luther Brookdale Chevrolet from 10-2. It was a stunningly beautiful day, 80 degrees and sunny --- just a perfect day for a car show! So we had our usual mix of door prizes, Golden Oldies, Goodie bags, dash plaques, 50/50 cash drawing, and trophies for the top 15 most popular show cars. This year's show was dedicated to Chris Johnson, who was the co-coordinator with Vern Schultz of this show plus our Winter Swap Meet. Chris passed away unexpectedly on July 30th and his family was on hand with his red Pontiac Firebird and also presented a special trophy in his memory. Prior to the presentation of the trophies, Terry H called for a moment of silence in remembrance of Chris and Cathie H read a spiritual passage in his honor. We want to say a special "Thank You" to Vern Schultz for being our gracious Host this year and for his past service co-hosting the show with Chris Johnson. We appreciate it, Vern! All in all, it was a great day, and we look forward to seeing you all at our September club meeting on 9/10 at the Automotorplex in Chanhassen.
