APS Senior Economic Development Consultant Sally Odette attended a similar leadership program several years ago in Phoenix and brought the idea to her company as a way of assisting development in rural communities. “As a public utility we understand that we need to be a good community partner and neighbor,” said Odette. “When a community like Wickenburg is thriving with leadership open to change and innovation, it’s good for both the citizens and for APS. That’s why we are happy to make the investment into Wickenburg by underwriting the cost for this leadership school.” The Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce expanded the vision to one of training leaders for all of the non-profit organizations in addition to the government sector. “Our idea is to help develop leadership talent among our local citizens that they can use as volunteers and elected representatives on the various boards, commissions, and committees of government and non-profits,” said Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Brooks. “We would love to see those who might be interested in serving the community on the school board, Town Council, the various town commissions, the Chamber committees, and in leadership positions in other non-profit organizations. People who want to be involved can gain significantly from this training.” The program consists of seven sessions on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. starting on Aug. 23 and will take place at several local locations. Session One will feature Kathy Conley from the League of Cities as speaker and will convene at the Community Center. The following session will be the first of two on town government with Mayor Ron Badowski and two councilmen, Town Manager Shane Dille, and Town Clerk Donna Riffel. W I C K E N BStephanie U R GWojick and Town Planner Jerry Stricklin. "For that reason, this book is a godsend to every well-intentioned manager or frustrated employee." Indeed Dr. Bob Nelson’s book and seminar are very valuable resources for everyone who is looking for creative and cost effective ways to let their employees - and peers - know they are appreciated. The range of suggestions, are valuable to someone who has just begun to explore recognition ideas and to the experienced managers who are looking for ways to "freshen up" their recognition efforts. Dr. Nelson explains why he put this book together, "Managers have fewer ways to influence employees and shape their behavior. Coercion is no longer an option; managers increasingly must serve as coaches to indirectly influence rather than demand desired behavior." "In thinking about this paradox, I concluded that a primary reason why most managers do not more frequently reward and recognize employees is that they lack the time and creativity to come up with ways to do it. A book of ways to recognize employees would thus be a fun and useful resource." The best feature about Dr. Nelson’s book and presentation is that all the ideas presented come from real life applications of successful companies. These companies range from the very large (Federal Express, IBM, Hewlett Packard, Wal-Mart, Dupont, Walt Disney, et al) the smaller, private, companies (Kollmorgen Corp., A-P-A Transport, Mid-Michigan Regional Medial Center, KXKT-FM, et al). The ideas cover almost any category of recognition from service awards, suggestion awards, sales awards, customer compliments, peer compliments, management compliments, individual and team performance goals, department performance goals, and for dozens of "just plain thank- you" SCF Returns $60 Million to Arizona Businesses For a 35th consecutive year, SCF of Arizona’s Board of Directors approved a dividend to policyholders. The Board voted unanimously May 24 to recommend $60 million. Since 1969, SCF has returned more than $1 billion to its qualified policyholders. The dividend amount each qualified policyholder receives depends on its annual premium and incurred losses(claims). Declaration of dividends is not guaranteed and are dependent upon SCF’s financial performance for theat year. Mailing of dividend checks to our members will be in October. Please see flyer inside newsletter for those wanting to join the dividend program – currently over 65 members are enrolled in this program through the Chamber. 1001 Ways to Reward Employees Please join The Business Journal for a presentation by the best-selling author of “1001 Ways to Reward Employees” and management expert Dr. Bob Nelson. He will share his insights on how today’s employees want to be recognized and motivated. He will also tell you how to do this without breaking the bank. reasons. They range from the traditional to the very creative and tailored recognition; from simple one-liners to short Case Studies. Dr. Bob Nelson is president of Nelson Motivation Inc., a management training and consulting company located in San Diego, California. Prior to starting his own company, he worked closely with Ken Blanchard of The One Minute Manager fame, and served as an executive for Blanchard's organization for over ten years. Dr. Nelson has sold over 2-1/2 million books on management and motivation, including 1001 Ways to Reward Employees, 1001 Ways to Energize Employees, 1001 Ways to Take Initiative at Work, Managing For Dummies, and his most recent: The 1001 Rewards & Recognition Fieldbook: The Complete Guide.. He has appeared extensively in the media including CNN, PBS, and NPR, and has been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Fortune magazine and numerous other publications to discuss how to best motivate today’s employees.
