Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church Bulletin: Vol. 25 No 36 September 12th—September 13th, 2015 The Precious and Life-Giving Cross of Christ "How splendid the cross of Christ! It brings life, not death; light, not darkness; Paradise, not its loss. It is the wood on which the Lord, like a great warrior, was wounded in hands and feet and side, but healed thereby our wounds. A tree has destroyed us, a tree now brought us life" - St. Theodore the Studite {826AD}, Father of the Early Church EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS Rev. She razed the second-century Temple of Aphrodite, which tradition held was built over the Savior's tomb, and her son built the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher over the tomb. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. 1. The Prophecy of Simeon. 2. The Flight into Egypt. 3. The Loss of the Child Jesus 4. The Meeting of Jesus and Mary on the Way of the Cross. 5. The Crucifixion 6. Jesus' body Struck by a Lance, Taken Down from the Cross 7. The Burial of Jesus. SCHEDULE: 2015 APOSTOLIC JOURNEY OF The cross immediately became an object of veneration. At a Good POPE FRANCIS TO Friday celebration in Jerusalem toward the end of the fourth century, according to an eyewitness, the wood was taken out of its silver container and placed on a table together with the inscription Pilate ordered placed above Jesus' head: Then "all the people pass through one TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 22 (WASHINGTON, DC) by one; all of them bow down, touching the cross and the inscription, ♦ 4:00 p.m. Arrival from Cuba at Joint Base Andrews first with their foreheads, then with their eyes; and, after kissing the WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23 (WASHINGTON, DC) cross, they move on." • To this day the Eastern Churches, Catholic and Orthodox alike, celebrate the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on the September anniversary of the basilica's dedication. The feast entered the Western calendar in the seventh century after Emperor Heraclius recovered the cross from the Persians, who had carried it off in 614, 15 years earlier. According to the story, the emperor intended to carry the cross back into Jerusalem himself, but was unable to move forward until he took off his imperial garb and became a barefoot pilgrim. Exaltation of the Holy Cross Novena Jesus, Who because of Your burning love for us willed to be crucified and to shed Your Most Precious Blood for the redemption and salvation of our souls, look down upon us and grant the petition we ask for ... (mention here) We trust completely in Your Mercy. Cleanse us from sin by Your Grace, sanctify our work, give us and all those who are dear to us our daily bread, lighten the burden of our sufferings, bless our families, and grant to the nations, so sorely afflicted, Your Peace, which is the only true peace, so that by obeying Your Commandments we may come at last to the glory of Heaven. O Cross of Christ, Immortal Tree O Cross of Christ, immortal tree on which our Saviour died, The world is sheltered by your arms that bore the Crucified. From bitter death and barren wood the tree of life is made; Its branches bear unfailing fruit and leaves that never fade. O faithful Cross, you stand unmoved while ages run their course; Foundation of the universe, Creation’s minding force. Give glory to the risen Christ and to his Cross give praise, The sign of God's unfailing love, the hope of all our days. • • THE USA 9:15 a.m. Welcome ceremony and meeting with President Obama at the White House 11:30 a.m. Midday Prayer with the bishops of the United States, St. Matthew's Cathedral 4:15 p.m. Mass of Canonization of Junipero Serra, Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 (WASHINGTON, DC, NEW YORK CITY) • 9:20 a.m. Address to Joint Meeting of the United States Congress • 11:15 a.m. Visit to St. Patrick in the City and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington • 4:00 p.m. Depart from Joint Base Andrews • 5:00 p.m. Arrival at John F.
