A
tascadero is located
in the heart of the Central
Coast, halfway between San
Francisco and Los Angeles. Highway
101 bisects Atascadero and yields 9 off
ramps providing access to the city. Scenic
Highway 41 also meanders through
Atascadero, heading west through the
Santa Lucia mountains to the Pacific
Ocean and east through the vineyards,
horse and cattle ranches to the Sierra
Mountains. Atascadero is a veritable
paradise. Within thirty minutes drive, one
can visit three beautiful lakes, over two
hundred wineries, numerous beaches on
the Pacific Ocean and the world famous
Hearst Castle. Atascadero offers luxurious
Bed & Breakfasts, affordable motels and
comfortable hotels and features a variety
of California cuisine and ethnic foods.
Atascadero (a-task-a-dare-oh), a Spanish name which, loosely translated, means
“boggy or a place of much water”, can trace
its beginning to a Mexican Land grant. In

1845 Governor Pio Pico granted Pedro Estrada almost 40,000 acres of the Asuncion
Rancho, a good portion of which eventually made up part of the smaller 23,000
acre Atascadero Rancho.
Edward Gardner Lewis founded the
planned utopian community in 1913.
Atascadero, the third largest city in
San Luis Obispo, home to over 27,500
residents, was incorporated in 1979.
The Santa Lucia Mountains provide a
natural barrier to the cooler climates of
the coastal communities, resulting in
greater dryness and longer periods of
sunshine. A mid-summer’s afternoon
high of 90 will typically be followed by
late night and dawn temperatures in the
50’s. On the rare occasions that Coastal
fog advances across the city, it burns off by
mid-morning and is followed by a light,
afternoon sea breeze.

The AZA Accredited zoo is set in the beautiful
Atascadero Lake Park, and is the perfect place to
stop while visiting the Central Coast. The Charles
Paddock Zoo is the home to over 100 animals on
5 landscaped acres. Home of rare Indo-Chinese
Tigers, Spider Monkeys, Meerkats, and many more
unique animals, the Zoo is committed to wildlife
conservation, education, and research, committed to
be “The Central Coast’s Conservation Center.”
Visit with the animals, enjoy a picnic in the
beautiful surrounding Lake Park or shop for unique
souvenirs in the Zoovenier Shop.

With a centralized location in the heart
of California, San Luis Obispo County

Located inland from the coast, Atascadero is right in the heart of this unique
setting with a year-round Mediterranean climate perfect for playing golf
during any season. Atascadero’s small
town charm and hospitality provides
the perfect destination for a unique and
ideal golf getaway. On any given day,
you can have your option of playing
golf, visiting a beautiful beach, or touring and wine tasting at your choice of
over 250 local wineries.
Atascadero is home to Chalk
Mountain Golf Course, an 18 hole
championship course. The beautiful
oak groves, rolling hills and undulating
greens overlooking the southern Salinas
Valley add to the charm and character
of this challenging golf course.
Hiking
The Cerro Alto Trail is located
in the Santa Lucia Mountains
off Highway 41 halfway between
Atascadero and Morro Bay. The
trail climbs to 2600 feet offering
one of the finest views on the
Central Coast. Incorporating a
figure 8 loop, distance hikers may
cover up to 20 miles.

The Jim Green Trail: trail begins on the north side of Chalk Mountain Golf Course.
A large trail marker is available at this point and you can choose which direction
to take as the trail is a two-mile loop. An excellent trail for a quick walk (about 40
minutes). Equestrians, bicyclists, and dogs are allowed. No motorized vehicles.
Rocky Canyon Trail:
Paloma Creek Park serves as an excellent trailhead. Travel
east on Halcon Rd to Rocky Canyon Rd. proceed east to the Rocky Canyon Quarry. A
modest climb up the canyon, approximately one mile will take you to a dirt road that
travels east four miles to Highway 229. The Historic town of Creston offers several
watering spots and cool shade before your return trip.
Atascadero Lake Park is nestled in a residential area with a road and pathway
surrounding a beautiful lake and park. A 1.1 mile hike takes you around the lake and
through the park.
Historic de Anza Trail is named after a Spanish explorer, Juan Bautista de Anza, a
frontier soldier of New Spain who led a large group of emigrants from Sonora Mexico
to Northern California in 1776. You can access the trail at 4545 Sycamore Rd. The
round trip loop is approximately 5.8 miles in length. Trail markers are posted.
A-Town Skate Park
A-Town Park Indoor & Outdoor Skate and BMX Park is located at 5493 Traffic
Way in the Colony Park Community Center. The facility has flat rails, bars, a bank,
a pyramid and two quarter pipes and is fully staffed and open to the public. All
participants must have a signed waiver form prior to park entry. Helmets with
straps are required - knee and elbow pads are recommended. For more information
or to reserve the skate park for a private party, please call 461-5000 or visit our
outstanding park.

The 18,000 square foot center located at 5599 Traffic Way includes a full-sized
gymnasium, teen center, café, arts and crafts center, dance room and restrooms.
Community classes take place at the center daily, as well as the City’s youth and

The beautiful lake park is the destination of residents
and visitors year-round and is one of the charms of
Atascadero. Take a stroll, jog, or ride your bike on
the path that follows the edge of the lake. The park
features the Pavilion on the Lake, a playground, rest
room facilities, barbecue areas, horseshoe pits, a sand
volleyball court and the Charles Paddock Zoo. The
Lake Park is also host to numerous summer concerts
and entertainment.

This beautiful space overlooking the Atascadero Lake
is ideal for business meetings, gatherings or functions,
both large and small and is available for a variety of
uses including weddings, dinners, dancing, assemblies,
and conferences. The onsite caterer utilizes the large
commercial kitchen and is available to create the perfect
menu for your event.

Horseback Riding
Atascadero has become home to many breeding
and training ranches that have relocated to the
area to enjoy the available acreage and ideal
climate. There is always something going on for the
horse enthusiast from Western & English shows,
Cutting Horse performances, Team Ropings, Team
Pennings and Endurance Rides. One of the largest
covered arenas in the state is located just 10 miles
north at the Paso Robles Event Center. Riding
trails are abundant throughout the county, from
beautiful white sand dunes against a blue Pacific
Ocean to the lookout trail in Los Padres National
Forest along the top of Cuesta Grade. The entire
San Luis Obispo County offers the finest riding
trails one could imagine.

Agri-Tours
The Central Coast has a diversity of geography and sub climates from cool, moisture-laden breezes near the ocean to the dry hot summer days inland. This diversity enables a broad spectrum of fruits, nuts, vegetables and fiber to be grown
in the area. Beautifully manicured olive orchards that produce some of the finest
award winning olive oils in the country dot the Santa Lucia foothills along with
many Lavender fields that bloom year around. Atascadero is home to one of these
beautiful farms, Harmony Lavender Farm located at 7045 Sycamore Rd. They are

Wild Horse Winery (1), www.wildhorsewinery.com and Pomar Junction (2),
www.pomarjunction.com. You’ll find horse ranches and vineyards
along the way. Find your way back to Templeton and enjoy the western
themed town founded in 1886. Afterwards head north on 101 to Highway 46
West where you will find numerous wineries including Castoro Cellars (3),
www.castorocellars.com and Hearthstone Vineyard
and Winery www.hearthstonevineyard.com (4) or you
can continue west on 46 to Vineyard Drive. A right turn
at Vineyard Drive will take you on a beautiful drive
through the Santa Lucia mountains to Halter Ranch
Vineyard, www.halteranch.com (5). As you wind your
way back to Atascadero, you will find Frocklicking
Frog www.frolickingfrogwines.com (6) and a short
trip south on El Camino Real will take you to Ancient

reston is located 13 miles east
of Atascadero, just off Highway
41. It is fast becoming a popular
destination for tourists and bicyclists,
hosting the western state’s annual
wildflower bike ride each spring and
Creston rodeo. The beautiful vineyards,
rolling hills, horse ranches and back
country roads, make and ideal setting for
cyclists or motor touring. From Creston
continue on Highway 229 south to
Highway 58 west on a beautiful country
winding road. As you travel through the
foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains
you will soon arrive in the small town of
Santa Margarita. A stroll around Santa
Margarita reminds you of American
small towns everywhere with restaurants,
grocery store, post office and numerous
antique stores. If you wanted to visit Santa
Margarita Lake or the famous Pozo Saloon
which dates back to the 1800’s you would
take Pozo Road south for approximately
16 miles. Once you are finished, a short 10
miles north on El Camino Real takes you
back to Atascadero.

Morro Bay, Cambria,
Hearst Castle

ake Highway 41 West to Morro Bay where
you can see a fishing village amongst shops
and seafood restaurants. Take Main Street
out to Highway 1 North to the quaint beach town
of Cayucos. Continuing North on Highway 1
North brings you to the unique little town of
Harmony, population 18, noted for its winery
and artist shops. A few miles ahead is Cambria,
nestled amongst the Monterey pines, noted for
art galleries, shops and dining. Continue North
to San Simeon where newspaper mogul William
Randolph Hearst built his castle way atop the
mountains overlooking San Simeon. Built between
1919 and 1947, the castles rich history is preserved
by the State of California as one of the popular
tourist attractions open for daily guided tours.

On your return to Atascadero, you may choose to
travel on Highway 46 West to Paso Robles where
you can hook up to Highway 101 South.

one junior high school, one
comprehensive high school,
one continuation high school,
and programs for independent studies, home schooling opportunity classes, and
adult education.
Busing is limited in the district:
Students from Pozo, Parkhill and Creston
are bused into Atascadero for junior and
senior high school years, and Carissa
Plains students for their senior high
school years. Elementary school busing
is available at specific pick up points for
students who live more than a mile from
the school. Bus pick up points are used
because of the inability of buses to go back
into some residential areas in Atascadero
due to the non conformity of the roads.

Restoring History...
The Atascadero City Hall
was built between 1914 and 1918 by Edward G. Lewis and has become one of California’s
historic landmarks. The building was damaged during the 2003 San Simeon Earthquake and
has been vacant since. Restoration is underway with a completion date of June 2013.

Ten carriers serve the general area for daily pickups

Air
Located 20 miles south in the City of San Luis
Obispo, the San Luis Obispo County Regional
Airport serves areas as far north as Southern
Monterey County and as far south as Northern
Santa Barbara County. The airport offers
convenient access to and from the Central Coast.
Residents and visitors have the choice of two
commercial airlines with flights to Los Angeles,
Phoenix, and San Francisco. The airport is also
home to full service general aviation and corporate
facilities.
City Bus
Atascadero Transit includes the North County
Shuttle, a fixed route transit service that provides
hourly bus service Monday through Saturday
connecting Paso Robles, Atascadero, North
County Cuesta College, Twin Cities Medical
Center and Templeton. Dial A Ride is a door
to door service available Monday thru Friday
from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.. The Regional Transit
Authority provides service to the San Luis Obispo
County. North County is serviced by “Route 9”
from San Miguel (18 miles north) to San Luis
Obispo Monday – Saturday 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.

in providing comprehensive state-of-the-art
psychiatric treatment as a fully licensed and
accredited forensic mental health facility.
Since its opening in 1954 the hospital has
evolved into a maximum-security facility
licensed for 1,275 beds with a staff of 2,100.
One of five state hospitals operated by the

Founded in 1926, the Atascadero Chamber of Commerce is the largest, oldest and
most prominent voice of business in the Atascadero area. The Chamber’s Mission:
To represent the business community and promote the economic and civic welfare
of Atascadero. With over 500 members, the Chamber is a catalyst in the community
dedicated to enhancing a healthy economic climate, lobbying legislation affecting the
business community, and providing community support.
Educational Seminars:
As the primary source of tourist and destination marketing information for Atascadero
and surrounding areas the Chamber maintains the city’s Visitor’s Center. In addition,
the Chamber assists new residents and those looking to relocate with information on
housing, schools, churches, professional services, health care, recreation and all other
services in Atascadero.
