Concerts Agenda 2011 Fringe‐ English Version In partnership with ROVI ‐‐‐ Sunday, January 23th ‐‐‐ FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 GARRICK DAVIS 12.25 > 12.45 Laughing Man Records ● USA Rock, Folk Garrick Davis is a singer/songwriter/guitarist from San Francisco set to unleash his immense talent on the international music scene. Many attempt to compare Davis’ to past and current artists. Warning: Look to those artists of lasting legacy. It is this exercise of comparison that will invite one to acknowledge the towering level of artistry Davis inhabits. His first singing performance short of age 3 meant that music was destined to encapsulate the Wyoming native’s imagination forever. Garrick was introduced to the music of Jimi Hendrix at 11, given a $45 electric guitar and thus began a 40‐
year artistic journey fueled by love, passion and desire to add enduring beauty to the world. Davis’ third record, the Rock/Blues/Funk/Folk “Expose Your Self” created with “The Fabulous FunkyBand” featuring son Zachary on piano, will be released on Davis’ label. Davis writes and performs with the confident perspective of life experience and childlike fearlessness intact. www.myspace.com/garrickdavis FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 PAUL CASEY 13.00 > 13.20 Paul Casey Music Ltd ● UK Rock, Folk . Irish songwriter, guitarist and singer Paul Casey is being talked of among Ireland’s new music followers as 'the new cool'. His songwriting, guitar playing and distinctive voice are set to cause quite a stir both sides of the Atlantic. Displaying an exceptional command of slide guitar and a unique flair for penning striking tunes, he has been compared to artists from David Gray to Ry Cooder. In truth, however, Paul Casey is an individual who makes up his own rules and carves his own niche when song‐writing and recording while continuing to create a unique and distinctive sound. Recently, three of Casey’s songs were featured on the hit American Television series ‘Wildfire’ on the ABC Family Network. Further placements were subsequently secured on MTV’s “The Real World; Brooklyn” and the award‐winning independent movie ‘I’m Through With White Girls’. All this is against the backdrop of US radio play in the past from Rodney Bingenheimer on KROQ‐FM and a number of impressive US live shows ‐ in particular at the Living Room in New York and Starr Hill Music Hall in Charlottesville, Virginia – which have resulted in a devoted and dedicated US following. With his forthcoming album 'Scrapbook' the Derry musician is set to raise the bar yet again with a collection of stunning new tracks showcasing truly masterful production and songwriting. A tireless worker, a prolific songwriter, an engaging performer, Paul Casey is a musician for fans of real music. www.myspace.com/paulcasey FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 JAMES COTTRIALL 13.35 > 13.55 Pate Records ● Austria Rock, Folk Everything started as a Street Musician in Vienna's tourist hotspots like "Kärntner Strasse/Stephansdom". She began her career as a child fashion model before making her motion picture debut in Elisabeth co‐starring Claudia Cardinale in 1998 at the age of 13. While she played in several theater productions and TV shows in Paris and in New York, she focused on her academic career. She holds a bachelor degree in Theatre Studies from the Sorbonne and completed her training in the French Conservatory of Drama. She also holds a bachelor degree in Philosophy with a major in Hinduism that led her to travel all around India. She met one of the spiritual leaders Rinpoche in the Himalayas, played in a Bollywood movie (I see you), and discovered Katakali, a traditional theater form in the Kerala. After this first spiritual adventure she worked as a nurse in a hospital in the Galapagos Island in Ecuador and studied shamanism with the Otavalo indians. She finally moved to New York to the NYU department of Performance Studies at the Tisch School of the Arts. This is where she met Rena Mirecka who played with musical improvisations to create new forms. Marion was already working on improvisations back in Paris with the producer DJ Pitch In/ Dirtyphonics, for electronic live concerts, but this specific process gave her tools to connect travels and experimental theater with music. Marion went to Italy with Rena to work on voice and body, and she began to write songs. She got back in Paris and met a young guitar player called Alexander Bellando. His father taught him guitar and violin, and at the age of 17 he left the south of France to study in a famous jazz school in Paris. With Marion, they recorded their improvisations and performed during a year in bars and clubs in France. Their song Gun and Mustache was selected to be performed at the French festival SOLIDAYS. Marion also worked with the French director Ambroise Becchio (Prodéïne) on her first video clip that revealed an ironic and surreal universe. Alexander and Marion are currently preparing their first album. www.myspace.com/marioncorralesmusic FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage
17.30 > 19.00 PETTI 17.30 > 17.50 Hotsak ● Spain Folk, Rock Petti can, without doubt, be described as the precursor of a new style which we could term ‘wild folk’. He began his musical career at the age of 16, as a guitarist with the rock band Bidasoa Noise Hole, with whom he gave numerous concerts all over the Basque Country and surrounding area. After the band broke up, he became the singer in a more experimental group called Zup, with whom he stayed until 1997 when he embarked on his solo career. It was at this point that we discovered this diamond in the rough of the music scene – a fine guitarist and blues singer with an unprecedented voice and an interpretation of the experience of living that is as poetic as it is wild. His first album was a collection of songs whose sheer existentialism often comes as a shock: Amets bat (1999). This was followed by Arrazoiak (2001) which features the most basic and acoustic side of his work, from the lyrics to the melodies and arrangements, demonstrating his immense skill in the field of singing and interpretation. Etxeko uzta (2002), on the other hand, shows a more electric and direct side to Petti’s style. Hauxe (2006). His latest album was recorded with Barrence Whitfield accompanied by The Bloodyhotsaks www.myspace.com/pettibasque FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage
17.30 > 19.00 MANGOMAD 18.05 > 18.25 Circular Records ● UK Dub, Electrique, Hiphop Mangomad is the solo project of Edinburgh‐based producer Kelman Greig. Kelman began his music career working as CD Editor for Future Music magazine. A place where he got his inquisitive hands on the latest electronic music gear and a much needed grounding in music production. In 2003, Kelman co‐founded Edinburgh’s now fossilised Yummi Records and one half of The Masters of Truemanship. The first release on Yummi was the quirky reggae tune Sunshine Spirit reaching the thumbs‐up from one of Scotland’s most famous literary sons, Irvine Welsh, author of Trainspotting. Mangomad’s debut album Electrotherapy was released at the end of 2004 and received some critical acclaim, the Big Issue describing it as “A Masterpiece”. Notable gigs followed, with the most prestigious being a slot on the Meduza stage at Budapest’s Sziget Festival in 2006. In 2009, Mangomad returned with an electro‐hip‐hop remix of Stanley Odd’s debut single The Numbness and ‘The Dead Leg Drop mix’ received extensive radio play. 2010 has seen the relaunch of Mangomad’s solo project, as well as the 2nd remix of Stanley Odd (Think of A Number). The new single, A New Parable features the poetic and prophetic rhymes of Solareye, the frontman of Stanley Odd. It’s a compelling story of injustice, torture and revenge, set against the backdrop of modern terror stories. In addition to writing and producing the music, Mangomad also turned his creative urges to the visual media by producing and directing the stunning animated video for the single, ensuring a notable return to the vanguard of new music from Scotland. Next up for Mangomad is the animated sequel to A New Parable, taking the story to another level with Solareye’s magnetic and perfectly executed storytelling married with the crafted electro beats of Mangomad’s production. www.myspace.com/mangomad FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage

12.25 > 14.30 IMAGINARY CITIES 12.25 > 12.45 ● Canada Indie, Pop, Punk Winnipeg is known as the “Heart of the Continent.” In this beating heart on the prairies, there is always new music being made: in its clubs and basements, and in between work and life. Imaginary Cities was born in a club called The Cavern, in between sets, a musical duo of Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas. Marti had moved to Winnipeg from Brandon, MB, and was playing in a Motown cover band called, The Solutions. Rusty and Marti began to record together, and in one all‐night writing session came up with a triumphant and soulful beginning, the track, Say You. It was a turning point: Marti’s stunning and original voice broke open a wealth of creativity between them. The momentum they gained from the Say You session carried on through the winter of 2010. The duo would regularly spend 12 hours straight writing and working on a single song. As Rusty explains, “If it was going well after a few hours, we would stay until we had a finished song to take home. There's an energy and excitement on the day you're writing and recording a new song that will almost guaranteed be absent if you come back to it another day.” This new group, founded in a chance meeting is now readying to introduce their debut album, Temporary Resident in early 2011. They are a band that is fast becoming one of Canada's most important and talked about new bands.
Their EP “HUMMINGBIRD” was released on October 26th with their album scheduled for release in Febuary 2011. www.myspace.com/imaginarycitiesmusic FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 SONIA BREX 13.00 > 13.20 Piranha ● Germany Electronique, Jazz The perfect setting for listening to the music of Sonia Brex is a sultry summer evening in a big city. When the day isn't quite over but the night hasn't quite begun. When rays of red‐orange sun fall through the gaps between tall buildings and the concrete underfoot is still warm. A knowing innocence runs through the songs on the album „Naif“, an ease which remains even when the music slows to a more melancholy mood, as in the soft rhythms of „Lampada“ or the smoothly introverted title track. „Naif“ is an album glowing with unshakable optimism. It's also there as she opens up the music to include influences from around the world – at times she whispers like Astrud Gilberto over a gentle bossa nova rhythm, then she playfully covers the 1940's classic from the USA , “A Little Bird Told Me“. The listener stumbles over slivers from Chinese opera and 70's Italian film soundtracks, a humming jaw harp, the traditional Italian tarantella dance or a dissected jazz sax solo layered over elegantly shuffling beats. Beats is an appropriate catchword, electronic music being the basis of her album. Synthesizer drones and digital bass drums set the pace. Sonia Brex takes full advantage of the benefits the genre offers. Electronic music is at its best when it sets everything in relation to everything else. A master of this approach is Matthew Herbert. His influence can be heard clearly on “Naif”. Sonia Brex has lived in Berlin since 1990, leaving her Sicilian homeland for the city which changed the course of history when the wall was toppled. The German capital was also home to many of her musical idols ‐ Einstürzende Neubauten and Nick Cave for example. Life in Berlin proved freer and more inspiring than in conservative southern Italy. And so she remained, working on multimedia projects at the Akademie der Künste and in collaborations with Berlin‐based artists Rechenzentrum and Jazzanova. www.myspace.com/soniabrex FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage

This alternative view, along with a genuine devotion to melodies and the disclosure of the deepest secrets of the soul gains ready popularity. Matching their energetic live shows to their lyrical genius, The Astronaut s Eye will convince you from the very first note. www.myspace.com/theastronautseye FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 ABBY 14.10 > 14.30 Snowhite ● Germany Indie, Rock Hailing from Berlin, Abby is made up of five young and talented musicians who are beginning to create some serious buzz, especially in their native Germany. Tracks such as ‘Evelyn’ and ‘We don’t Worry’ perfectly demonstrate their poppy, mellow sound and poetic lyrics and are a promising teaser of what is yet to come from this great quintet. http://www.myspace.com/abbyband FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 17.30 > 19.00 YA‐HA! 17.30 > 17.50 Ya‐Ha Musik ● Germany Indie, Pop, Punk YA‐HA! is an upcoming German band formed by singer & director Janna Wonders and Flo Schuster rapper of the German Hip‐Hop act "Blumentopf". Janna Wonders was born in a small hippie‐town in California and grew up with her mother in a commune of the '68 rebel Rainer Langhans in Germany. While studying at film school she experiments with laptop and midi‐keyboard, produces beats and writes her own first songs influenced by new wave, gothic and 80ies bands. She also started directing music videos. For her music Janna gets inspired by images and music is the inspiration for her films. Flo Schuster (Kung Schu) is one of the rappers of the german Hip‐Hop act "Blumentopf". He used to be a metal‐head who started kicking rhymes 15 years ago to strike back at his rapping class mates. The playground freestyle‐battle‐opponents formed a crew. Their first album "Kein Zufall" (eng. "No coincidence") was released 1997. The rest is a part of German Hip‐Hop history. YA‐HA! began in the summer 2008 on Jazon's farm, a horse ranch in California. While Janna the singer is visiting her hippie father, she writes lyrics and composes melodies. In the solitude of Sonoma County the first song ideas emerge. Her ideas find their way over the Atlantic into the Munich home studio of YA‐HA! rapper and keyboarder Schu (Blumentopf). This kicks off an active exchange of songs via internet. Shortly after Schu flys to America. The two work on their music, eat oatmeal and cruise in an old white Buick through the withered hillside of the Bay Area. Back in Munich they can't wait to go into the studio to record the songs which they already produced on a laptop.Together with Benni Pfeifer (drums), Flo Laber (bass) and Dirk Brechmann (guitar) they develop the YA‐HA! sound. Energetic Indie‐pop with a punk attitude, 80s sounds, powerful guitar riffs, incredibly strong melodies and Four‐to‐the‐Floor. YA‐HA! will release their debut album in fall 2011. www.myspace.com/yahamusik FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 17.30 > 19.00 BRANDT BRAUER FRICK 18.05 > 18.25 !K7 ● Germany Experimental, Electro Brandt Brauer Frick are three young musicians who have joined together for an exciting acoustic techno project. Daniel Brandt and Jan Brauer, who as a duo named ‘Scott’ produce club music with a jazz attitude and Paul Frick, who has studied classical and modern composition with Friedrich Goldmann at the Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). “Using the tonal richness of classical instruments to play techno feels very natural for us, one can say that our music has grown organically out of our backgrounds. We had felt for years that most instances of combining techno and classical music lack an authentic approach. Instead of using only the typical epic orchestra or piano sounds, we love to explore the dirty and percussive sides of those instruments, adapting techniques from composers like John Cage or Helmut Lachenmann: preparing our piano with screws and rubbers, knocking against every single part of an instrument, until we find that one great sound.” After releasing EPs on Tartelet Records and their self‐founded labels Doppelschall and The Gym, their debut album ‘You Make Me Real’ on !K7 is most intense manifestation of their unique chemistry so far. www.myspace.com/brandtbrauerfrick FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 17.30 > 19.00 MARINA LASLO 18.40 > 19.00 Classic, jazz Marina Laslo is an acclaimed musician who has released a wealth of well received classically‐
tinged titles. Her previous forays in Russian Romance and contemporary classical works have seen her achieve sizable record sales in her home country of Russia, and perform at established venues such as London’s Barbican Centre, the Queen Elizabeth Hall. Marina’s new life in the UK has seen her absorb a range of influences that have shaped her career. Inspired by the fashions of London, her love of jazz and the countless live music venues in the capital, Marina has emerged as an incredibly confident performer, whose dramatic stage shows, versatile voice and outspoken personality, have gained her notoriety from many of the country’s top broadsheet newspapers, including The Times and The Daily Telegraph. Her latest project is the album Night and Day masterminded by multi‐million selling producer Robin Millar and featuring some of the UK’s leading jazz musicians www.myspace.com/marinalaslo ‐‐‐ Tuesday, January 25th ‐‐‐ FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 ASHLEY HICKLIN 12.25 > 12.45 Ferryhouse Productions ● Germany Pop, Folk There is something quirky about Ashley Hicklin’s little world. Hidden in the cabin of an old sail‐boat in Hamburg’s harbour is a creative home somewhat fitting for such a distinctive voice. It’s an enchanting setting that’s certainly added a unique twist to his debut album ‘Parrysland’. The roots of this nautical theme go deeper ‐ He was raised on open‐mic nights in his parent’s bar on the North‐East Coast of England, and first picked up the guitar, piano and drums in his early teens. After rocking‐out in punk and brit‐pop bands, he then turned to classical music, going on to compose works for World‐renowned ensembles such as London Sinfonietta. Concerts at the Royal Albert Hall were followed by many months touring up and down the UK as a Folk‐Pop singer‐songwriter (in “the most orange camper van known to man”). He swiftly made a name for himself as the “Bright Young Thing” from the North, and the BBC soon invited him into their TV studios. The live video broadcast created an immediate buzz in the music industry, and among those who approached him was Peter Ende, the CEO of EMI Publishing Europe. In less than a year after signing, Ashley had written his first number one single for Swedish Idol’s ‘Johan Palm’, Belgium’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest (another number one single) and a host of other chart hits for major artists across Europe (working with the teams behind Skunk Anansie, Leona Lewis, James Morrison, Marit Larsen, Amy Winehouse, Sugababes, etc. ‐ “basically a lot of cool cats”). It’s hard to believe that he’s still only 24 years young. Whilst writing in Germany for other artists, Ashley was introduced to acclaimed producer Franz Plasa (Echt, Selig). They immediately clicked and started to record the foundations of ‘Parrysland’. A record deal with Ferryhouse Productions and Warner Music followed suit, and Ashley relocated to Hamburg to work closely with his ever‐growing team. A series of gigs and media showcases ensued, from intimate solo concerts to full nine‐piece band affairs featuring his raucous string quartet. www.myspace.com/ashleyhicklingermany FRINGE 2011 Palais des Festivals, Underground Stage 12.25 > 14.30 MAYLEE TODD 13.00 > 13.20 Do Right Music ● Canada Pop, Punk, Soul Maylee Todd, one of Canada’s most exciting new music acts, is spreading an infectious energy around town. Music Canada in 2010. Following the album’s release, she received glowing reviews, and her first single “Summer Sounds” has gained international airplay on J‐Wave Tokyo, BBC Radio 1 London and Radio Nova in Paris. Other accomplishments from the album include track “Protection Plan 101” being licensed to the Canadian National Film Board’s interactive film project “High Rises”.
