Heads of Delegations in Helsinki
12-13 March 2007
Welcome
On behalf of the Finnish Broadcasting
Company YLE it is both my great pleasure
and honour to welcome you to Helsinki,
the host city of the 52nd Eurovision Song
Contest.
For decades we struggled without
success until finally, on a soft and warm
night in May in Athens, Greece, it finally
happened: Finland won the Eurovision
Song Contest for the first time. A long
dream came true.
With the same determination and
devotion YLE took the challenge of playing
the important role of host broadcaster of
the Eurovision Song Contest. The event
is not only one of the longest running but
also one of the most prestigious television
programmes in the world. This year it is
also the largest ever with 42 participating
countries.
It is an honour for YLE to bring all the
fun and excitement of the Eurovision Song
Contest to millions of viewers not just in
Europe but to countries around the world.
We will do our utmost to ensure that this
year’s “Eurovision” will be a successful
and memorable event.
To all the participants I wish the best
of luck in the Contest. Enjoy the unique
“Eurovision” atmosphere and never give
up your dreams. We hope that many of
them will come true in Helsinki.
Mikael Jungner
Director General
Finnish Broadcasting Company YLE
esc 2007 delegation handbook
dear friends,
Photo Seppo Sarkkinen
On behalf of the entire YLE staff I have
the pleasure to wish you all a warm
welcome to the city where I was born. At that time Helsinki was a modest town
far away from the metropolises of Europe.
Later, when the Finnish Broadcasting
Company took part in the Eurovision
Song Contest for the first time, the EBU
had already started to make Europe
smaller and we all started to become
more and more as Europeans. That was
something like 42 years ago. That was
how long it took us to win the ESC. And
now finally, on behalf all of us: Welcome
to Helsinki!
The days and weeks ahead will be filled
with a lot of hard work for you, but also,
I hope, with lots of memorable moments
together with us. And, of course, a dream
coming true for some of you. You have
all been in our minds during the past
months, when we were planning and
making preparations to have everything
ready for you.
For you, the Performing Artists, the
Stars of the Show, we have prepared
a stage good enough to give the best
possible background for your song. We
have built the lights, special effects and
cameras to ensure that your song can be
welcome
presented in best possible way to millions
of viewers around the world.
For you, the Media Representatives,
the Press Centre is just minutes away
from the venue with space enough to
offer convenient working conditions
to all of you. There you will have the
possibilities to watch the rehearsals
and live transmissions on large screens,
follow the press conferences, have a cup of coffee or just concentrate on your work.
For you, the Fans, in addition to the
facilities of the Arena and the Press
Centre, the Euroclub, The Eurovision
Village and several other interesting
places in the city centre will be worth
visiting.
You could say that all the action is
in the heart of Helsinki and you can be
assured that all of you taking part in the
ESC 2007 will stay in our hearts forever.

breather in the wild? Unwind in majestic
backwoods of lake upland forests, only a
stone’s throw from Helsinki. Throw yourself at
the mercy of the nature. Feel the beauty… with
a twist. You may be even in for a surprise.
Be prepared we will contact you.

Finland & helsinki in brief
FINLAND
Total area
338,144 km (130,558 sq. miles). Finland
is the seventh largest country in Europe.
Of the total area 10% is water, 69%
forest, 8% cultivated land and 13% other.
There are 88,000 lakes and 179,584
islands, 98,050 of which are in the lakes.
Europe’s largest archipelago lies off
Finland’s southwest coast, and the islands
of Åland, an autonomous Swedishspeaking province of Finland, are part of
this archipelago. Maximum distances are
1,157 km (719 miles) north to south, 542
km (336 miles) east to west. Land border
with Sweden is 614 km (381 miles), with
Norway 736 km (457 miles) and with
Russia 1,340 km (833 miles). Length
of coastline is 4,600 km (2,859 miles),
1,100 km (684 miles) excluding inlets.
Time
Finland is in the Eastern European Time
Zone. Eastern European Standard Time
(EET) is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich
Mean Time GMT +2. From 25 March,
Finland observes local summer time,
which is GMT +3.
Population
5,2 million. About one million people live
in the Helsinki metropolitan area.
Language
Finland is officially bilingual: Finnish is
the first language of 92%, and Swedish
of 5.5% of the population. About 1,700
people in Lapland speak Sami (Lapp)
languages. Since Finnish is the mother
tongue of only about five million people
in the world, the ability to speak foreign
languages is essential for Finns. This is
an advantage to foreign visitors, because
many Finns speak English, German or some
other European language. Together with
its close relative Estonian and distantly
related Hungarian, it is a member of the
Finno-Ugrian group of languages. Finnish
characteristic features include an absence
of definite and indefinite articles and of
the distinction between male and female
pronouns (“hän” means both “he” and
“she”), and the rarity of prepositions,
compensated for by the declension of
nouns.
Banks
All banks are open from Monday to Friday
between 09:00 and 16:30, closed on
Saturdays and Sundays. American Express,
Diner’s Club, Eurocard, Access, Master Card
and Visa are accepted in hotels, restaurants,
larger shops, and department stores. Visa
Electron is also accepted in many shops and
department stores.
currency
The monetary unit in Finland is euro;
1 euro=100 cent.
Tipping
Tipping culture is almost non existent in
Finland, although it has become more
common recently. Service charges are
included in hotel room rates, restaurant and

taxi prices, so tips are not expected, but
can be given if you think the service has
been especially good.
Electricity
The electric current in Finland is 220 V
(230 V), 50 Hz. A two-pin plug system,
familiar throughout Europe, is used.
Helsinki
Helsinki was founded by King Gustaf
Vasa of Sweden in 1550 on the mouth
of the Vantaa River. In the mid-1600s
the centre was moved to its current
location on the southern peninsula, where
the deeper waters allowed Helsinki to
compete better for the Baltic Sea trade.
In 1917 Helsinki became capital of the
independent Finland.

yellow sign clearly marked ‘Taksi/Taxi’.
Payment can be made using Finnish bank
cards and major international credit cards
as well as cash.
Public transportation
With a single ticket you can hop aboard
trams, busses, the metro and even the
ferry to Suomenlinna. Single tickets can
be purchased from the driver, from ticket
machines. Tourist tickets are available for
unlimited use on public transportation
for either 1, 3 or 5 days. They can be
purchased from ticket machines, from the
Tourist Information or from the Helsinki
City Transport service point in the Central
Railway Station. Helsinki is a conveniently
compact city, so it is easy to get around on
foot as well.
climate
In Helsinki and the south, the snow
and ice starts melting midway through
March, while in the north it’s more
stubborn and can linger right into May.
The psychological landmark for the arrival
of spring is May 1, or Vappu, a time of
feverish celebrations across the country.
water
Eighty per cent of the water in Finland
is classed as being exceptionally clean.
Improved water protection has resulted in
an improvement in the quality of the water
emitted by both industry and municipalities.
Bottled mineral water is available in shops
and restaurants, but Finnish tap water is of
the highest quality and can be consumed
freely throughout the country.
Taxis
More information about Finland:
Taxis can be obtained by telephone
or from taxi ranks. The central taxi
reservation number in Helsinki is 0100 0700. Your hotel staff will be
able to provide you with local booking
numbers. All taxis have an illuminated
