I would like to thank my company, Bechtel, for allowing me to serve on the board. This is a great example of a private sector company working with a non-profit to improve the community at large.” SANDY ROMERO, Bechtel Pueblo Team Exiting Board Member 2014 2015 2014 Board Chair MITCH MEMINGER On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Pueblo County United Way, it’s my honor to thank the people of Pueblo for their tremendous support. Year after year, the Pueblo community responds to the needs of its citizens and this past year was no different. Through the efforts of our 2015 campaign chair, Dan Centa, and his dedicated cabinet, our campaign total increased for the twelfth year in a row; surpassing the one million dollar mark for the fifth time. In total, $1,045,000 was raised to support Pueblo. This is an accomplishment the entire community should be proud of as it makes possible the continued and expanded support of our program partners. In addition, this achievement provides the support needed to fund new and ongoing initiatives like the mentoring program. From humble beginnings in 2012, the mentoring program has been expanded annually. The program now boasts an amazing group of nearly 80 mentors working with 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at Heaton, Pueblo Academy of the Arts, Liberty Point International School in Pueblo West and the Roncalli STEM Academy. Mentored students have made marked progress in test scores, grades and behaviors. More importantly, these middle school students join the growing number of mentored middle school students whose enthusiasm for learning has been changed forever. Mentors are making a difference in these students’ lives now and through those lives, seeds of success are being sown in our community. In January 2014, United Way took over the Pueblo VITA program. VITA stands for the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program, and is an IRS program that trains volunteers to provide free income tax assistance. In addition to saving tax payers the cost of filing their taxes, program volunteers also ensure those being served receive the beneficial credits they’re entitled to. This year, our VITA volunteers filed over 1,100 tax returns and leveraged hundreds of thousands of dollars that were re-circulated in our community. And finally - thanks to your combined donations of time, talent and money, allowed United Way to provide well over 136,000 units of service in 2014, funding 25 outstanding Pueblo non-profit organizations and over 50 different programs targeted at filling the most critical needs of our community. Without your help, many of these programs would not exist. Thousands are being served and lives are brighter and better because of YOU. Please accept the heartfelt thanks of the board and staff of United Way. In conclusion, let me thank my fellow members of the Board of Trustees and the staff of the United Way for all their hard work and dedication. Let me specifically express my sincere gratitude to Dave Galli who served first as an example for me as I learned what a great board chair accomplishes and then later returned to fill the balance of my term as chair as work and family priorities prompted my move away from Pueblo. To CEO Andrea Aragon, and her dedicated and hardworking staff, the community needs to understand the thought, care and planning that have gone into developing our efficient service organization and a board anxious to partner with the non-profits that work daily to make the lives of those most in need better. It was a privilege and honor to serve as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Pueblo County United Way. Thank you Pueblo; for your continued support of the United Way. - Mitch Meminger “Our campaign total increased for the twelfth year in a row; surpassing the one million dollar mark for the fifth time. In total, $1,045,000 was raised to support Pueblo.” – MITCH MEMINGER, 2014 United Way Board Chair GIVE. ADVOCATE. VOLUNTEER. 1 2014 2015 UNITED WAY HITS GOAL, Makes History, Leaders Get a Pie in the Face to Celebrate! Dan Centa, 2014 Campaign Chair and local community champion proudly announced a history making campaign total of $1,045,000 at the 92nd Annual Meeting and Awards Presentation on Wednesday, May 20. Making the mood even more victorious was the nearly 300 community champions who attended the event. United Way shared that they were able to achieve something they had never done before. The 2014 campaign marks the first time in the agency’s history that the annual fundraising campaign has increased for 12 straight years! Upon hearing the news, the crowd erupted with applause, horns blaring, confetti throwing and a standing ovation. United Way’s Annual Meeting, sponsored by Xcel Energy, is held each year to reveal the results from the year’s campaign efforts, pay tribute to the many volunteers and donors who generously give of their time and money to benefit the community and elect new Board of Trustees members and officers. Awards were given to companies who had significant gains in their campaigns and outstanding volunteers were honored (please see pages 5 & 11 for a list of those receiving special recognition for their efforts). United Way also gave a special thank you to the David & Lucile Packard Foundation, PCAPP Partners, Southern Colorado Community Foundation, Little Caesars, El Pomar and Temple Hoyne Buell Foundation for providing matching grants that benefited the 2014 campaign. Several organizations were recognized for their campaign gains, efforts, and special events held throughout the year. Loaf ‘N Jug was recognized for their in-kind donation of two $500 gas cards given to individuals who attend a United Way campaign presentation during the fundraising year. A special recognition also acknowledged media partners and various special events held throughout the year to support the 2014 campaign. The luncheon concluded by President/CEO Andrea Aragon and Past United Way Board Chair Dave Galli accepting a challenge by United Way Campaign Director Lawrence Kochis to receive a pie in the face for United Way. Playing off of the popular “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,” the Housing Authority of Pueblo created “Pie Play for United Way” as a fun way to raise additional funds within their organization. As such, people challenge co-workers, family and friends to take a real whipped cream pie in the face for United Way and/or pay a donation. Inspired by the Housing Authority’s creativity, and after previously taking his own pie in the face for the worthy cause, Lawrence saw an opportunity he couldn’t pass up. However, in a last minute turn of events, Lawrence sold away his right to put a pie in both Andrea and Board Chair Dave Galli’s face when Andrea’s husband Darrin Smith paid $500 for the rights and invited CSU-Pueblo Football Coach John Wristen to get in on the fun. The crowd erupted with laughter and gasps as both Dave and Andrea bravely accepted their messy yet somewhat delicious fate. It was a fun and lighthearted way to end to a very special day. Dan Centa closed the meeting 2 by thanking the community for their generosity, hard work and for being true community champions. He very correctly proclaimed that when United Way wins, the entire community wins. Contributions to United Way of Pueblo County are used to help those in need right here in the Pueblo community. Each year, more than 200 businesses, organizations and foundations support United Way and the Pueblo community, along with over 6,000 individual donors. Contributions to United Way touch many critical issues right here in our community. In 2014, over 136,000 people in Pueblo County benefited from United Way funded programs. In total, United Way of Pueblo County has raised over $2,032,088 in community support during the 2014 campaign, including volunteer in-kind, leveraged funds, special grant and program dollars. United Way’s annual community giving campaign has raised well over $43,000,000 since the non-profit was created in1923. 2014 2015 2014 Campaign Chair DAN CENTA When Dan Centa agreed to serve in the important role of the 2014 Campaign Chair, it was a huge victory for United Way and for the community. This win led to an even bigger victory in May of 2015 when thanks to Dan’s leadership, United Way reached its campaign goal of $1,045,000 – the highest total to date AND achieved an accomplishment it has never made before. The 2014 campaign marked the first time in United Way’s long history that the annual fundraising campaign increased for 12 straight years! “We couldn’t have done it without Dan and our amazing campaign cabinet,” remarked Andrea Aragon, President/CEO of United Way. “Dan is a guy that the whole community knows and loves. We are so thankful that he agreed to serve in this very important role,” she shared. “Dan Centa represents all that is good about Pueblo. In fact, Dan IS Pueblo.” Known as a true champion for Pueblo, Dan Centa has a long history of serving the community he grew up in. He is well known for his role as the City Director of Public Works and Transportation, City Traffic Engineer and various other related titles for over 37 years. Upon his “retirement” from the City of Pueblo, Dan was quickly snagged up to serve as the President/CEO of the Pueblo Economic Development Corporation (PEDCO), where he worked tirelessly to bring economic opportunities and precious jobs to our community. In 2013, he agreed to come out of his “second retirement” to serve the Pueblo West Metro District by serving as the Public Works Director, where he is still employed today. In addition to a life-long career in public service, Dan has been involved in many organizations, including Rotary 43, the American Red Cross, and is a member of both the Greater Pueblo Chamber of Commerce and the Latino Chamber of Commerce. He is a graduate of CSUPueblo, where he received his BS in Civil Engineering Technology and went on to receive a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs. In addition to being a champion for Pueblo, Dan is the quintessential family man, listing his wife Gwen, who he has been married to for 42 years, and his children and grandchildren at the very top of his extensive resume. If you happen to run into Dan, PLEASE EXPRESS YOUR GRATITUDE to him for taking on this challenge and serving our community in such an important way. United Way thanks Dan for giving our entire community a huge win - generosity, compassion, hard work and hope. He is the epitomy of a true community champion. Chair, Pueblo West Metro District “What an amazing experience and privilege to be involved with United Way as campaign chair this past year. I continue to be amazed by the generosity of our community. We continue to have significant needs and I look forward to seeing Pueblo rise, as they always do, to give in their typical unselfish manner.” – DAN CENTA, 2014 United Way Campaign Chair 3 2014 2015 President/CEO Message ANDREA ARAGON When you become a community champion by supporting United Way, we ALL win. Pueblo is widely known as the Home of Heroes. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Pueblo is also the Home of Champions. The definition of a champion as I see it is a person that generously and nobly supports, advocates, promotes or fights for a cause, or on behalf of someone else. When you give to United Way, you really are a champion for many different causes and many individuals of all ages and backgrounds. Your support gives life to over fifty different health and human service programs that help build selfsufficiency, lend a hand-up and help to provide a safety net for those in need. This helps our community become stronger, and when our community is stronger, each and every one of us wins. Who knew in September of 2014, when we kicked off our community fundraising campaign with the theme of “Become a Community Champion” that Pueblo would indeed see several championships on the state and national level? First it was East High School winning the 3A State Football Championship, then it was my beloved CSUPueblo Thunderwolves that won the Division II National Championship. It was nothing short of glorious. Maybe not so well known, but equally glorious was that our 2014 United Way Campaign was also victorious. For the first time in our 92 year history, United Way supporters changed history by increasing the campaign total for twelve consecutive years. We have never had a longer streak of increased campaigns. In addition, it is the highest total we have ever raised! We asked the community of Pueblo to become community champions by supporting United Way, and you responded very generously. It wouldn’t have been possible without the help of our 2014 Campaign Chairman, Dan Centa. Dan has been a life-long champion for the Pueblo community. His humor, leadership and compassion for his fellow citizens made the often daunting campaign fun. In addition to Dan, I want to give my heartfelt thanks to our campaign cabinet, who are listed on page 3. I am in awe of their dedication to Pueblo, and am humbled each and every day that they choose United Way to invest their time and energy in --- they are the best and brightest in their professions, they are the best and brightest in our community. I’d also like to express my appreciation to the United Way Board of Trustees, who also fall into the category of “best and brightest.” They are true community champions, providing their leadership and guidance day in and day out. This year, I had the pleasure of working with two board chairmen. Mitch Meminger of Trane Company served the first part of the year, but unfortunately left in December after relocating to Augusta, Georgia for a promotion. While he only served as the board chair for six months, he was a very active board member for many years, on our allocations committee, as well as serving on our campaign cabinet. He most definitely made our United Way better in many ways. It’s a big loss for us, but Augusta is in for big gain. Stepping in to save the day was our past chairman, Dave Galli, who graciously offered to act as board chairman for the remainder of Mitch’s term. Dave is a class-act. My sincere gratitude also goes out to the United Way staff for all their hard work all year long. Raising money, being committed to outstanding donor stewardship and overall excellence each day is not easy. It is often extremely exhausting and thankless. Yet, they still strive on, raising the bar each year. Finally, I would like to thank YOU, whether you are a donor, supporter or volunteer. I am very honored to witness your amazing generosity and the impact it makes. YOU are a true community champion with a heart of gold. You have proven that yes, Pueblo is both the Home of Heroes AND the Home of Champions. YOU have also proven our theory that when people step up heroically, care about others and give of their time, talents and treasure, our entire community wins. “You have proven that yes, Pueblo is both the Home of Heroes AND the Home of Champions. The program provides holiday gifts for children in need. The community rallied, and hundreds of underprivileged children were given toys, clothes and other gifts. Along with a contribution from United Way, the Angel Tree program received donations from the Gil Padilla Scholarship Fund (named in honor of former United Way board member Gil Padilla) by his wife Charlotte Vasquez and family. As a result, Christmas joy was brought to the lives of children who otherwise would have gone without. Pueblo Chemical Agent Destruction Pilot Plant Bechtel • AECOM • Battelle IBEW/NECA Electrical Repair Program Meeting community needs is what United Way is all about. Fortunately, we have outstanding businesses and organizations that are always willing to help. A great example of this is the creation of the IBEW Local 12 and the Southern Colorado NECA Emergency Electrical Repair program. The two organizations came together as a way to help low income individuals fix dangerous, emergency or life-threatening electrical issues. Due to their leadership, several local electrical companies in Pueblo stepped in to offer their services at a reduced cost. Clients are screened by Catholic Charities and SRDA to ensure eligibility and need. Over 16 families have been helped as a result of this program in 2014/2015. Both IBEW Local 12 and Southern Colorado NECA have given very generous donations of money, time and expertise to keep this program alive. United Way is very proud to be a part of this innovative program to help those in need. 11 Gil Padilla, Jr. meets a grateful recipient at the Angel Tree Christmas distribution. 2014 2015 United Way Middle School Mentoring Program Expands - FOUR SCHOOLS, EIGHTY MENTORS United Way’s Middle School Mentoring Program, in its fourth year, reached its ambitious goal of recruiting 40 new mentors this year, bringing the mentor total to a very impressive 80 individuals. In September and October of 2014, United Way embarked on a very aggressive strategy to recruit 40 new caring, business-oriented individuals for our proven program. The goal was achieved with a lot of hard work, speaking to service clubs and businesses, radio and newspaper support, and word of mouth. Please see a list of our amazing mentors listed on page 20. The expansion of the program was made possible by a grant from the El Pomar Foundation. As a result, United Way will have a remarkable group of mentors in four middle schools throughout Pueblo County at Heaton, Pueblo Academy of the Arts and Liberty Point International School. New to the mix this year is Roncalli STEM Academy. Results are what helps this program change lives. Outcome data is being kept at all schools, measuring grades, behavior and attendance. In many instances, grades have improved, as well as behavior. Days that mentors meet with their student show improved attendance as well. In addition, there are numerous heartwarming antidotal stories happening each day, that are no doubt making a difference. School engagement among students with mentors has increased significantly as well. It is because of this difference that most mentors sign on for another year with their student, showing incredible commitment for their student throughout their often difficult middle school years. Here are some quotes from a few of the mentors about the program: “This program has helped me understand with just a short time you can make a lifelong difference and friend. I am not sure if I learned more or my mentee learned more, but either way, it is a beautiful success.” - Matt Smith, owner, Snap Fitness 24/7 & Pueblo’s Best Carpet Cleaning; 2nd year mentor at Liberty Point International School “So far, so good. I'm sure any teacher or parent can attest, but it is incredible the transformation that can happen in one school year. To see my mentee refocus her boundless energy toward academic and social achievements is a type of proud impossible to fully describe.” - Jenna Seddon, Professional Bull Riders; Pueblo Academy of the Arts, 2nd year mentor “The relationship I have built in the last three years with my mentee will last for a life time for me. I cannot believe how fast it has went by, but I have memories that will never be forgotten. It is an opportunity that I am very happy I did not pass up.” - Lawrence Kochis, United Way; Heaton Middle School, 3rd year mentor Mentors serve as a positive adult role model that helps with problem solving, decision making and organization skills, provides a connection between the world of work and school, and perhaps most importantly, listens with their heart. Mentors spend one hour a week with their student during the school year, often around the lunch hour as well as field trips throughout the year for bonding and educational purposes. Have you ever wanted to change the world for the better? There’s no better way to change a young person’s life than being a mentor. 12 2014 2015 th Annual Flavor of Pueblo Food & Wine Show The 10th Annual Flavor of Pueblo Food & Wine Show is one of Pueblo’s original and premier wine and food events spotlighting the incredible eateries, delicious drinks, and the variety of ‘flavors’ our community has to offer! In addition to providing free tax preparation, VITA works to ensure everyone in the community receives all of the tax credits and deductions for which they are eligible. Two years ago, United Way of Pueblo County very willingly took over VITA program. Thanks to the help of highly trained volunteers, the Pueblo VITA Coalition processed 1,123 income tax forms at various geographic sites located conveniently throughout the community. Monetary returns to the city and county through tax refunds, tax credits and savings of payments for private preparation fees totaled an impressive $1,397,051. A break-out of these figures for tax credits includes $487,300 in Earned Income credit and $229,372 in Child Care tax credits. We estimate that an average tax preparation fee would be $100 per filing, resulting in over Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Volunteers Dennis Murphy Gale Hamby Ann Carson Marilyn Buckner Josie Salazar Michael Catalano 20 $112,300 in tax preparation savings alone. Often times, these valuable tax credits can literally lift people out of poverty, helping them to become more self sufficient. In partnership with United Way and Catholic Charities, hundreds of people have received “a hand up” in these difficult economic times. Recipients must be screened for their eligibility and need, and can receive help once in a twelve month period, not to exceed three times in total. The fund was created by appropriations from the Board of Water Works, the City of Pueblo and contributions from caring individuals and businesses. United Way thanks the Board of Water Works, already one of our most steadfast and generous partners, for stepping up in a big way to help those struggling to make ends meet. Pueblo and United Way are indeed lucky to have the leadership, generosity and compassion that the Board of Water Works provides. Community Impact Grants Addressing Needs that Matter to Our Community! At United Way, our volunteers look at the needs of our community. As needs change, we want to be responsive and invest your donor dollars as effectively as possible – because results matter! In response to ever-changing needs, United Way Board of Trustees have developed community impact grants, which are designed to address needs not currently funded by United Way. This year, we were able to invest new dollars into the following outstanding programs: • Care & Share Food Bank Fresh Farm Market - To provide school centered mobile pantries offering nutritious food throughout the school year and summer for students attending South and East High Schools. Over 500 plus students and their families have been impacted. • Salvation Army Summer Camp and Back to School - To provide the five elements of a successful summer program - educational, nutritional, cultural, recreational and safety to over 200 children who otherwise would not be exposed to the opportunity. Also to help children in need with school clothing and supplies to ensure school readiness. • Soaring Eagles Center for Autism Mentoring Matters – To provide over 200 individuals with a new dual mentoring program for teens and seniors with autism. Thank YOU for helping us make this happen. Give. Help. Make your impact….because our community matters! Students at South High School wait in line to receive delicious and nutritious food at the Fresh Farm Market, which provides emergency food to students and their families, made possible by United Way donors.
