What is snoring?
Snoring is defined as a coarse sound made by vibrations of the soft palate and other tissue in the mouth, nose & throat (upper
airway). It is caused by turbulence inside the airway during inspiration. The turbulence is caused by a partial blockage that may be
located anywhere from the tip of the nose to the vocal chords. The restriction may occur only during sleep, or it may persist all the
time and be worse when we are asleep. This is because our muscle tone is reduced during sleep and there may be insufficient
muscle tone to prevent the airway tissue vibrating. During waking hours muscle tone keeps the airway in good shape; that's why we
don't snore when awake.
Why do we snore?
It is said that snoring is often the result of overindulgence in some of life's pleasures. The following are the causes of snoring:
Overeating and/or Lack of Exercise, Alcohol and Sleeping Pills, Smoking, Sleeping Position, Allergy, Nasal Stuffiness, Mouth
Breather, Small or Collapsing Nostrils, Tongue Base Snorer and Multifactoral Snoring.
What is Sleep Apnoea?
Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is defined as the cessation of airflow during sleep preventing air from entering the lungs caused by
an obstruction. These periods of 'stopping breathing' only become clinically significant if the cessation lasts for more than 10
seconds each time and occur more than 10 times every hour. OSA only happens during sleep, as it is a lack of muscle tone in your
upper airway that causes the airway to collapse. During the day we have sufficient muscle tone to keep the airway open allowing for
normal breathing. When you experience an episode of apnoea during sleep your brain will automatically wake you up, usually with a
very loud snore or snort, in order to breathe again. People with OSA will experience these wakening episodes many times during the
night and consequently feel very sleepy during the day: they have an airway that is more likely to collapse than normal.
What is the BSSAA?
The British Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Association was formed in 1991 to help snorers and their bed partners to end the nights of
disturbed and lost sleep, to end the bad feelings that often develop and to help them return again to peaceful nights together.
The aims of the association are to promote public awareness that snoring and sleep apnoea are generally treatable complaints and
that help is available. We offer information on causes and treatments and this can be obtained from our web site or by telephone to
one of our help line advisers. We also have a close working relationship with the medical profession and provide them and their
patients with our expert help and information.
We sell a range of anti snoring products that have all undergone robust clinical trials and have been proven effective for the purpose
for which they were designed. We provide many of the NHS hospitals with our products and GPs and consultants frequently
refer their patients to us.
We pride ourselves on our high level of expertise that we continue to develop by attending study days and conferences with our
medical colleagues. Our membership of organisations such as the Royal Society of Medicine, The British Thoracic Society and The
British Sleep Society enables us to meet with other health professionals to exchange ideas and information. In 2004 we joined forces
with other organisations and charities who have an interest in snoring and sleep apnoea, to form the Sleep Alliance. The aims of the
Sleep Alliance are to lobby Parliament to provide better facilities for sleep medicine.

As to my own experience, the most unusual present I
have ever received was two sacks of manure. I had led
a very sheltered life and had absolutely so idea what to
do with it. After a few days, with them outside my
backdoor, my kitchen smelt like a stable. I was at my
wits end, so late one night, and I know you will think
I'm mad, I buried them in the garden.
No-one ever found out and even today when I look at
my beautiful roses I have to smile as I keep the secret
that no one knows what's underneath them.
