The West Mersea Town Regatta takes place on
Mersea Island in Essex, and has been running
since 1838. A Regatta Programme containing all
of the Regatta details including the Sailing Entry
Form, along with numerous interesting articles of
local events past and present is available from a
number of Mersea shops for about six weeks
prior to the Regatta.
The School Field in Barfield Road is open for
ALL DAY FREE CAR PARKING and there will be
several stalls and displays to look at. Bocking
Concert Brass Band will be play during the
afternoon and Refreshments are available at the
old lifeboat station, with R.N.L.I. cards and
souvenirs on sale plus Regatta T-shirts, Sweat
Shirts and Polo Shirts.
There is a full Sailing and Water Sports
programme through out the day and Bert Stock’s
Fair is also on hand for you to enjoy.
The prize giving ceremony is at 7.30 p.m. outside
the Old Lifeboat Station, but if it is wet this will be
held in Peter Clarke’s Shed.
The day is being rounded off by a 20 minute
Grand Display Of Fireworks at approximately 9
p.m and don’t forget to listen for Kimbolton
Fireworks spectacular 5 Minute Rocket.

RIDE CAMPAIGN
Blind people are currently excluded from claiming the higher rate mobility component of DLA, which provides help to disabled people
for getting out and about. Blind people, who can't drive, can only receive the lower rate of DLA. Wheelchair users, who can drive, can
receive the higher rate.
In August 2006 RNIB launched the campaign 'Taken for a Ride, because it had been contacted by many blind and partially sighted
people who believed they were being treated unfairly when compared to other disabled people over Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
higher rate mobility component (money for help getting out and about). RNIB, hundreds of MPs, and 9 out of 10 of the general public
believes that blind people who can't drive, have equal if not more difficulty getting about than wheelchair users. Currently blind people, who can't drive, can only receive the lower mobility rate of DLA (help getting out and about) around £17 per week. Wheelchair
users, many of whom can drive received the higher rate, around £45 per week.
Blind people say the pavements and streets to them are like minefields. Many have become virtual prisoners in their own homes
having been involved in near fatal accidents, involving cars, falls and collisions caused by obstacles on pavements including man
holes and dangerous over hanging objects. Blind people who have missed hospital, doctors, and other important appointments,
including job and educational opportunities, plus visits to family and friends because they couldn't afford the cost of a taxi.
RNIB attended meetings set up by the Government but without achieving success, in December 2006, the biggest ever lobby of
parliament by blind people took place over DLA. 1200 angry blind and partially sighted people from across the UK marched on
parliament demanding a change in DLA rules. During 2007 further meetings continued between the RNIB and DWP (Department of
Work and Pensions representatives became more positive: a total of 253 MPs had signed a motion (EDM) in parliament giving their
support to blind people and agreeing they should become eligible to claim the higher mobility rate of DLA, in the same way as other
disabled people. This was the biggest level of MP support for any single issue affecting blind people. As negotiations continued, and
with the Government still committed to working on the problem, RNIB commissioned a survey of the general public that concluded; 9
out of 10 members of the general public agreed that blind people should receive the same level of benefit as wheelchair users. With
these levels of overwhelming support, in December 04, 2007 and exactly one year on since 1200 people had marched on parliament,
RNIB returned to the House of Commons and secured a public pledge at a parliamentary reception on DLA from the Minister for
Disabled People, Ann McGuire, confirmed the Government's commitment and that the Government wanted to find a solution to the
problem.
By spring 2008, the Government appeared to have concluded it's negotiations and a formal proposal was sent to the Minister at
the DWP. All negotiation had appeared to have concluded with no further objections on either side. RNIB waited for the Government
to announce what it believed to be a positive decision that would see the way forward for blind people to become eligible to claim the
higher rate. With no such announcement forthcoming from the Government, RNIB called on them to say when eligibility to the higher
rate would happen. The Minister's response has angered RNIB as he did not provide an answer as to when eligibility would be
agreed for blind people. He did say that he was not against the principle and added that the Government was still working with RNIB
on the issue. RNIB believed it had concluded it's negotiations and a decision on allowing eligibility for blind people to the higher rate
of DLA from what it believed was a committed Government over the issue is now overdue.
While the Government makes it's decision. A new EDM has been tabled in parliament, that in less than a fortnight already has 140
MPs sighed up. More campaigning activity is also being planned. RNIB would like readers to contact their MP Bob Russell who has
signed the (EDM) and ask him to write to James Purnell MP about why blind people, almost 2 years on, are still waiting to hear when
the Government's commitment will actually allow them eligibility to claim the higher rate of DLA. Readers can also contact the RNIB's

Look Or Don’t Look Charity Competition Winner
A Big Thank You to all the people that played our charity game Look Or Don’t Look at Layer
De La Haye Village Fete. We all had great fun playing the game and in the process managed to
raise £51.24 for the nominated charity. The winner was the person who dealt on the highest deal
for the day. Maria Coppin was the lucky winner dealing on the top prize of £10,000. Maria
works as a housekeeper at Colchester General Hospital and has chosen The Special Care Baby
Unit to receive the money.
