Boca Grande is located on the seven-mile long, threesquare mile wide Gasparilla Island in Lee and Charlotte
counties and midway (55 miles) between Sarasota and
Fort Myers. Boca Grande Village, the three-square
block area in the heart of Boca Grande, is in Lee
County. The island faces both Charlotte Harbor and the
Gulf of Mexico. One thousand residents live in Boca
Grande full time, while nearly 4,000 part-timers make
it their second home. Tampa, Miami and Naples are
comfortable drives to the island, while Charlotte County,
Sarasota International and Fort Myers International are
the closest airports. Sanibel, Captiva, North Captiva,
Useppa, Cayo Costa and Cabbage Key are some of
the nearby islands accessible by boat.

Gasparilla Island Causeway and notice the old railroad

The main bike path is part of Florida’s Rails-to-Trails
project that utilizes the old railroad’s right-of-way. Check

at the state park and spot the wildlife, such as eagles,
owls, raccoons and iguanas. Bask in your surroundings
as you enjoy fresh seafood at one of Boca Grande’s
popular restaurants on the beach. While you’re out and
about, ask the locals about the Bush Family’s frequent visits to Boca Grande or the Denzel Washington
movie “Out of Time” that was filmed on the island in 2003.
Boca Grande is well-known for its significant place in Florida history, and the Johann Fust Community
Library is a good place to do some research on the Calusa Indians and the phosphate industry and
their impact on Gasparilla Island. The Boca Grande Community Center, Boca Grande Lighthouse (in
Gasparilla Island State Park), Charlotte Harbor and Northern Railway Depot and Whidden’s Marina
are just a few of the important tourist stops that have been designated as national historic places.
