Dear Delegates,
Welcome to the 4th Annual Employer Healthcare and Benefits Congress!
This year’s conference will be the best one yet. The exhibit hall will be jammed packed with brokers, carriers, HR
professionals and other senior level executives seeking innovative solutions in an ever changing business landscape.
The speaking and educational sessions will feature some of today’s leading thinkers and will offer valuable insights
into navigating the complex and ever changing elements of competition, compliance, and reform. This is the place
to be to position your organization for the future and to share common challenges and useful practices with industry
experts.
If you are looking to invest in yourself and advance your career why not take part in one of the certification sessions
offered at the congress? Set yourself apart as a specialist certified by the leading organization in the industry. Stop
by the certification desk at any time during the conference and sign up for one of the four sessions before they are
sold out!
This year our conference is integrated with the Medical Tourism Conference as more employers implement domestic
& international medical tourism. Technology and advancements have virtually shrunk the world. Individuals seeking
quality care at affordable prices have been crossing borders in ever increasing numbers. As employers seek to
expand benefits and contain costs, health and wellness travel will become necessary and practical solutions. It has
already begun with forward thinking companies such as Lowes, Pepsi, Wal-Mart and other organizations leading the
way across the globe.
The EHBC is the catalyst for building relationships and the networking platform is your vehicle. Log in, upload and
start connecting! Whether you are an employer seeking to improve benefits and contain costs, a service provider
offering cutting edge solutions, a consultant seeking access to new clients or anyone interested in learning about the
most innovative approaches to employee health and wellness the networking possibilities are infinite!
Our event next year will be held in Las Vegas! So plan ahead on attending the 5th Annual Employer Healthcare and
Benefits Congress, held November 2nd through the 6th.
We would like to thank all our speakers, exhibitors, sponsors, members, and the advisory board who helped this event
possible.

insurance, known as “exchanges.” The exchanges will be operated by states or, if the states are unwilling or
unable to set up an exchange, the Federal government. Not to be outdone, many private organizations have

Federal exchanges. In this session, you will learn:

What is an exchange and who is eligible for coverage under the exchanges,
What types of benefits will be offered through the exchanges,

Voluntary Benefits Buyers Profile: Its An Age Thing
DIPLOMAT BALLROOM 1
Voluntary Benefits
Younger workers have an appetite for choice and personalization. Older workers have never needed
protection more than they do today.
•
Gen X and Gen Y value individualizing and personalizing what coverage’s they have. They grew up
in a world of co-pays and deductibles and are more willing to pay for the protections and services that
are meaningful to them.
•
This presentation will address how employers can tap into this relatively recent phenomenon and
leverage voluntary and workplace strategies to help attract and retain younger talent.
•
Baby Boomers are planning to delay retirement and stay in the workforce longer. Retiring at 70,
rather than 60 exposes the working baby boomer to far greater morbidity and mortality risks. In short,
protection has never been more critical for boomers.
•
This presentation will show how employers can help older workers be better financially protected by
extending core offers through voluntary and worksite solutions, while at the same time protecting
themselves from potential increased benefits costs associated with older employees.

Beyond Zero Trends
REGENCY BALLROOM 2
Corporate Wellness
This session serves as an overview to Dr. Dee Edington’s book “Zero Trends: Health as a Serious Economic
Strategy.” Zero Trends is organized into three primary sections: The Mission, The Business Case, and The
Solution. Companies that embrace the transformational concepts will be rewarded financially by zero cost
trends, increased effectiveness in the workplace, increased health status of the workforce, and will become
a best place to work.
Poor health is a serious threat to our way of life as individuals, businesses and to our economy. The action
needed now requires a serious individual, business and economic strategy to reverse past and current ways
of thinking and our use of resources. The suggestions in “Zero Trends” and in this session are presented
as a challenge to all to find a new level of thinking to address the threats imposed by poor and worsening
health. The comments and suggestions may be irritating or challenging to some. The intention is to raise
the bar for success and thereby challenge those companies willing to make the transformation necessary to
become champion companies.
This session will also include a real life example of incorporating these concepts into its wellness programs.
Learn how you to can succeed by managing towards Zero Trends!

This session demonstrates how one employer was able to use an innovative health scoring tool to enable
their clinical health coach to identify at-risk employees sooner than traditional predictive modeling tools.
WVUH’s initiative is a model for how early identification and effective coaching positively impacts employee
health and wellness, reduces absenteeism, enhances employee engagement and controls rising health
care costs. Participants in this session will learn how to:

Boosting Employee Wellness through Social Media
REGENCY BALLROOM 2
Corporate Wellness
As the younger generation permeates the workforces and organization’s older generations become
more tech savvy, employees are spending more and more time on their mobile devices and social media
websites. More and more employers are looking for innovative ways to effectively communicate with their
employees as well as engage employees. The social nature of products like Facebook and Twitter can be
harnessed to help people become more engaged in their wellness programs, and more successful as they
try to improve their health. It helps to create healthy competition within the workforce by creating social
accountability which helps employees to stay on track and meet their health goals.
This session will explore the many ways employers can leverage social media (ie: daily health coaching text
messages, online journals, discussion groups, public forums) to increase participation in their corporate
wellness programs by sharing with their colleagues their health goals, improvements and success.
Learn from leading employers that have increased participation by incorporating social media elements

2012 Congress Agenda
Employers have recognized the role of incentive-driven health and wellness programming as an added benefit
to increase participation. However, participation alone is not closely aligned with improved health outcomes
or cost savings. Outcomes-based incentives, in which employees are rewarded based on achieving a certain
health factor has increasingly shown to have a direct correlation to improved health outcomes. The goal of the
discussion will be to identify and illustrate best practices and pitfalls in creating outcomes-based incentives
within the wellness paradigm. The discussion includes forms of incentives, tools for measuring outcomes over
time and case studies showing ROI in outcomes-based models. Key points include:
•
•
•
•
Provide a foundation of the relationship between health and wellness programs and outcomes-based
incentive programming
Provide a comparison between participation-based and outcomes-based incentives
Share analytical methodology used in measuring effectiveness outcomes-based efforts
Provide case studies of employers successfully using outcomes-based programs
The outcomes of this study will offer audience members take away tools to assess the value and benefit of
the health and wellness incentive programs. Employers will gain a constructive method that will apply to
their decision making on health and wellness outcomes-based on actual case studies showing successful
outcomes-based rewards programs.

Level Up! How Games Are Getting Employees Off the Couch
REGENCY BALLROOM 2
Corporate Wellness
Businesses know that they need a wellness program that works, but too often health screenings and pamphlets
aren’t enough to reach the employees who need to get well, and cash incentives can produce only momentary
engagement. What employers need is a way to kick start new, long-lasting, healthy habits and behaviors. In
short, they need to make wellness fun.
Fun is exactly what businesses get when they decide to ditch the pamphlets and get behind a game for
wellness. A social wellness game not only engages a huge percentage of employees, it keeps them coming
back for more points and slimmer waistlines - encouraging healthy habits from taking the stairs to sleeping
more and eating less. Employers will get a healthier, happier, more productive workforce and employees will
get a wellness program that gives them the tools, incentives and support to get healthy. This discussion will
include:
•
•
•
•
•
Why wellness programs are a strategic priority for your business
How social wellness engages employees and yields real results
Why teams are important to a successful wellness program
How games can produce powerful patterns of behavior
How to use incentives judiciously

this program was not sustainable as designed, and the program was curtailed.
The dialogue surrounding the CLASS Act did much to raise awareness of this important protection, but how
to address this risk remains a challenge for all constituents. Many Employers are still contemplating their role

Value Based Medical & Prescription Design
REGENCY BALLROOM 2
Self Funding
Value based purchasing (VBP) is a means by which progressive employers can create an environment
to stimulate the continuous improvement of the quality, safety and efficiency (i.e. value) of care. They
can do this by joining with like-minded payers and providers to follow the six principles and practices of
value based purchasing first published 25 years ago. In cooperation with payers and their employees,
employers need to augment these VBP practices with Value Based Insurance Design. By rewarding the
health conscious and more cost effective clinical decision making of their employees, dependents and
retirees (whose health care costs they subsidize), employers may use VBID to enhance their VBP programs
and their results, and vice versa.
Keynote Objectives:
•
•
•
•
•
Understand why the ultimate goal of value-based purchasing (VBP) is to improve continuously the
quality, safety and efficiency of healthcare services delivered to specific populations.
Discuss how VBP differs from Value Based Insurance Design (VBID).
Examine a new way of employer leadership engagement and strategic thinking in the C-Suite so that
employers can continue to champion and sustain VBP and VBID
Identify innovative strategies for employers in their enlightened self interest to be leaders in VBP and
VBID.

How Employers Evaluate, Select, Enroll & Administer
Voluntary Benefits
DIPLOMAT BALLROOM 1
Voluntary Benefits
The process of selecting a voluntary benefit varies from organization to organization and size of the
organization. Internal benefits needs assessment is usually carried out by HR after taking into account
the needs of employees and desired change the HR like to accomplish. Once the needs assessment is
done, there will be a process that includes an RFI or straight to an RFP (with plan design details). The
procurement process also varies. The public sector procurement process is quite different from the private
sector. After the due selection process, the benefit carrier will have detailed implementation meeting
with HR to go through a project implementation plan that includes—communication, enrollment, payroll
interface, reconciliation, premium payments etc. The evaluation is a continuous process to see that the
benefits offered are in line with the HR goals as well business strategy.

Reform Ready Marketing & Brand Strategies
DIPLOMAT BALLROOM 3
HEALTHCARE REFORM
Today, 170 million Americans get their health insurance through their employer. Another 15 million buy
it on their own. However, there are 51 million Americans without any health insurance and another 22
million deemed” under-insured.” While the future of health care reform’s Affordable Care Act is filled with
uncertainty, one thing is crystal clear: the healthcare and insurance landscape is set to undergo massive
transformation. Anticipating and prepare for this change will separate winners from losers. Forwardthinking marketers need to be armed with intelligence to assess impact and make informed decisions for
managing their future.
The impact trends covered in this session include:
•
•
•
•
•
11:00 AM - 11:50 AM
Market Trends – Examination of critical issues facing healthcare consumers, payers and providers,
from economic pressures to care delivery challenges to an aging population.
Customer Segments – Health reform means millions of new potential patients gain access to health
benefits – who are they and what do they look like.
Marketing Remix – Consumers (aka customers) are in control; they’re talking about you, reviewing
you, and price checking you. They have a choice, and marketers need to adjust to the new rules.
Opportunity Runway – Prepare innovative approaches to capture opportunity in tomorrow’s reformed
environment where headwinds/tailwinds mean differentiating your value proposition.

The ERISA Effect on Voluntary Benefits
DIPLOMAT BALLROOM 1
Voluntary Benefits
The Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) of 1974 establishes minimum standards and
requirements for retirement, health, and other welfare benefit plans, including life insurance, disability
insurance, and other voluntary benefit programs. ERISA’s extensive rules address the federal income
tax effects of transactions associated with employee benefit plans, with mandates that qualified plans
must follow to ensure that plan fiduciaries do not misuse plan assets. Relative to voluntary benefits, many
employers do not understand the benefits ERISA provides them and protects under federal laws versus
state laws.
Does ERISA matter? Hear from leading experts on the pro’s and con’s of voluntary benefit programs being
subject to ERISA. Also, hear the do’s and don’ts on how voluntary benefit programs become subject to
ERISA and see the reasoning on why ERISA matters.

Raising the Bar! Don’t Settle for Average Health Outcomes
DIPLOMAT BALLROOM 2
SPONSORED BY HbD International
Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome. That is
where the wellness industry is currently stuck! New goals and expectations won’t be reached with the same
old methods, otherwise, you’d already be achieving them. Don’t settle, let’s raise the level of expectation. See
the real world results and learn the science behind some of the most consistent, successful and sustainable
health behavior change programs in the industry. Expect whole population participation without incentives.
Expect more than two-thirds of your workforce to improve their health. Expect to change the culture of your
workplace. If you’re no longer satisfied with “average” and want to separate yourself from the crowd then you’ll
want to learn how to spot some of the common flaws in traditional approaches. Don’t do the same as everyone
else, instead learn the strategies that can help improve your program design and work towards generating
world class, industry leading outcomes.
