What is a Reserve Deputy? Reserve Deputies are volunteers from our community that have answered the call and wish to make a difference. They donate their time working side by side with regular Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Deputies in a variety of duties. Their primary role is to supplement patrol deputies answering calls for service and at special events. Minimum Requirements: • • • • • • • • 19 years of age or older. U.S. Citizen. Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Possess a Florida Driver’s License and proof of insurance. Be of good moral character and have a clean background. Cannot have used tobacco products within the previous six (6) months at the time of application and up to the date of hire (includes smokeless tobacco). Pass background investigation. Training & Certification: Volunteer Requirements: Uniforms & Equipment: Compensation: Selected candidates will attend a 360 hour reserve academy at no expense to the individual. The academy is held Mon-Thur, 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm and some Saturdays. If the individual has attended a full law enforcement academy their certification will be activated. All uniforms and equipment are provided at no expense to the candidate with the exception of their firearm and footwear. Each reserve deputy must serve a minimum of 20 volunteer hours each month on assigned duties. Those hours are made up of detail assignments throughout the Sheriff’s Office. Areas of service include: Patrol, Aviation, Marine Unit, DUI Enforcement, Warrants, Canine and others. You are volunteering your time to the Sheriff’s Office however, there are off duty paid assignments available to those who fulfill their voluntary obligation. These paid assignments currently pay over $20/hour. Examples of paid assignments would be added security at Buc’s games and special events like Guavaween.
