Moving the
Mission Forward
Mark Ricketts
President and CEO
Since 1961, National Church Residences has been working to provide quality
housing and care for seniors and others who need our help. Continuous
improvement has long been a part of our character. Yet we always have more to
do, so we have been urging our team to move the Mission Forward.
This has allowed us to focus on two important things. First, we have spotlighted
specific attributes where we want improvement: Quality, Reliability, Satisfaction
(for residents, clients and employees) and Safety.
Second, we are building our culture of servant leadership by listening deliberately
to all the voices involved in serving our residents and clients. Great ideas often
come from those who are closest to the residents, and we are establishing
methods to ensure that those ideas get heard.
Allen V. Rupiper
Board Chair
As our team grows stronger, so does our need for donors, partners and volunteers.
We spend more than $10 million on charity care. Our volunteers gift us with their
talent, compassion and time to enrich our communities. Our partners make it
possible for us to be an innovative leader in integrating home and supportive
services for seniors and vulnerable individuals, enabling them to live healthier and
more satisfying lives.
We deeply appreciate all that you have done to support National Church
Residences. The journey ahead is exciting and challenging. Thank you for your
contributions that helps us move the Mission Forward.

National Church
Residences
purchased
Hickory
Hollow Senior
Apartments,
a 55-unit low
income senior housing facility in Memphis,
Tennessee, on January 30, 2015. The 15-yearold facility became the 11th National Church
Residences property in the Volunteer State.
National Church
Residences’ presence
in Atlanta, Georgia,
continued to grow with
the grand opening of
Panola Gardens on March 24, 2015. The
newly-built four-story affordable senior
apartment complex, located in the Atlanta
suburb of Lithonia, features an on-site
medical suite with a care coordinator to assist
residents with health needs.
Chimes Terrace, a
one-of-a-kind property
located in Johnstown,
Ohio, became National
Church Residences’ first
facility to combine
assisted living with
low-income, tax-credit
independent living
under one roof when it
celebrated its grand
re-opening on March 9,
2015. United States
Congressman Pat Tiberi
was among the speakers
who helped celebrate
the event.
On May 1, 2015, National Church Residences celebrated

Philanthropy Highlights
Thanks to grants from Enterprise Community Partners, LeadingAge,
and the Columbus Foundation, National Church Residences
expanded the JAVA Music Club program in central Ohio from its
initial site at Hilltop Senior Village to include Commons at Third,
Centers for Senior Health, First Community Village, Worthington
Place, Vanderbilt Apartments, Commons at Buckingham, and
Avondale. The group, which uses music to help residents interact
and share personal experiences, has been a huge success.
Participation has grown exponentially at each of the sites and is
conducted as many as six times a month with an average of as
many as 40 clients per program.
Gifts and grants of $264,000 funded the
National Church Residences Foundation
Transportation Program over the last fiscal year,
providing scheduled transportation services to
older adults in Pike, Ross and Belmont Counties in
Ohio. The free transportation services for clients
and residents logged 194,000 miles and served an
average of 413 adults. The transportation program
is integral to the housing and supportive services
provided by National Church Residences to assist
many caregiver families that are unable to provide
transportation for their loved ones.
The National Church Residences Distinguished Lecture Series on Senior Living & Care
Innovation, honoring Tom and Jody Slemmer, was established in September 2014. Donors
created the fund to sponsor programs to bring together National Church Residences’
employees with industry thought leaders. The first program in the series was the Future of All
Things Senior Leadership Symposium, held September 1–2, 2015, in Atlanta.

Planned gifts continue to play an important role in the charitable activities of a retirement
community. In addition to charitable bequests, National Church Residences has been
blessed with many charitable gift annuities. A retired couple recently decided to enter into
a charitable gift annuity agreement with National Church Residences Foundation in order
to supplement their retirement income and take advantage of important tax considerations. The gift principal amount was $300,000.
The Columbus
Foundation & The
Osteopathic Heritage
Foundation made
a $100,000 grant, as
part of their Capital
Improvement Initiative
Funding Partnership, to
National Church
Residences in support
of the establishment of
the Champion Intergenerational Enrichment and Education
Center. The center will be located on the near east side of
Columbus and will be a hub for education and training, adult
day care, early childhood learning, and primary health care
programming. Partners include the Ohio State University,
Columbus Early Learning Centers, Columbus Metropolitan
Housing Authority, Partners Achieving Community
Transformation (PACT), and National Church Residences.
Through the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of
Cincinnati’s 2014 Excellence in Service Award,
National Church Residences received an $80,000
grant, in partnership with Huntington Bank, toward
establishing the Wellness Services Center serving
Commons at Grant permanent supportive housing
residents. The Carol M. Peterson Housing Fund at
FHLB, which provided this grant, honors the memory
of a passionate affordable housing advocate who
helped build the FHLB’s Affordable Housing Program
into what it is today, and who helped create and
inspire many FHLB voluntary
housing programs, leaving a
legacy that champions safe,
decent housing for deserving
populations.

Volunteers of the Year
John Davis
Harriet Hardy
Rick Dement
Richard “Dick” Rundels
Four individuals were honored this spring as National Church
Residences “Volunteer of the Year 2015” winners.
Richard “Dick” Rundels was presented with his award at Bristol
Village where he has volunteered since 2013 after his mother, a
former resident
there,
passed
Columbus, OH), Harriet Hardy
away.
John Davis (Commons at Livingston,
(Madison Tower, Madison Township, MI), Rick Dement (Grace Gardens,
O’Fallon, MO) and Richard Rundels (Bristol Village Health Care and
Hospice, Waverly, OH) were each presented with the awards at separate
ceremonies to honor them for the selfless work they do on behalf of
National Church Residences.
“Of the thousands of volunteers we have across the nation,
there are always those who rise to the top,” said Stacey Kyser,
National Church Residences Senior Director of Development
and Volunteer Services. “If only there were awards to give all of
our volunteer nominees. We received incredible accounts of
service given freely by individuals and groups that truly
embody our mission.”
Davis was selected as a Volunteer of the Year for his work with
Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, a national organization that
teaches disabled military veterans fly fishing skills.
In 2014, 500 hours of service were given by Project Healing
Waters.
“If you peek in on one of our meetings, you will see no
difference between the volunteers and vets,” Davis said. “It is
just people enjoying one another’s company, sharing stories
and tying flies.”
Harriet Hardy, an 88-year old resident at Madison Tower, has
maintained several volunteer positions in the property for the
last 15 years. She currently works in the kitchen five days a
week, is the director of the resident choir and delivers the
monthly newsletter.
Six individuals
nominated
Rundels for the
work he does at
Bristol Village,
which includes
assisting the families of dying patients, bringing special treats
to residents, attending grief share meetings, and playing bingo
and building puzzles with patients in the nursing care units.
One of his nominators stated that they have never seen a more
dedicated, loving volunteer than Rundels.
Rick Dement has been a volunteer at Grace Gardens for 27
years.
He was recognized with the award for the work he puts in
leading a non-denominational bible study and showing up at
the facility whenever his presence is needed.
It was noted in his nomination that when the facility
experienced the untimely death of a resident, Pastor Dement
was there within minutes – not only for the immediate family
but also for the other affected residents in the building.
“Every year the volunteer program is growing and more and
more properties are extending their reach by involving
volunteers,” Kyser said. “Thank you for your work to cultivate
these relationships and get people involved in volunteering.”

Mill Run Announces Plans for
Alzheimer’s Tranquility Gardens
Each year, Alzheimer’s disease slowly steals memories away from
the nearly 5.1 million Americans who live with the condition.
their lives that were joyful,” said Roehrenbeck. “It has meaning
and purpose.”
For the families and loved ones who feel the effects of
Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, finding a way to help
them remember is a crucial part of providing them with care.
To design the Tranquility Garden, Mill Run enlisted the services
of Linda Wilson, a landscape architect with MKSK, who found
special meaning in helping with the project.
At National Church Residences Mill Run, a senior community
located in the Columbus suburb of Hilliard, a plan was unveiled
to residents at the annual Christmas celebration on Thursday,
December 11, for a one-of-a-kind facility that will provide
residents receiving Memory Care a chance to re-experience
happier times.
Wilson’s husband Ron passed away a year ago at the age of 58
from complications due to early onset Alzheimer’s.
“The true beauty of everything we do involves life and death. It’s
an evolution,” said Linda Roehrenbeck, Executive Director of Mill
Run, at the announcement of the plans for Mill Run’s Tranquility
Garden. “This project will evolve. Just like our lives do.”
The Tranquility Garden at Mill Run will be constructed in multiple
phases, eventually culminating in a beautiful outdoor area
complete with a park, a garden, a therapy and art
wall and a patio for dining and relaxing.
“This garden is grace. There will be
moments of serendipity. It will be a
way to bring back moments of
“I first came into contact with National Church Residences
because I had my husband in their adult day services,” Wilson
said. “(That facility) was (previously) an outdoor garden center
that had a nice outdoor space. For me a major concern was the
quality of life outside of the four walls.”
With the care her husband received in mind, Wilson began
designing early plans for a Memory Care garden but did not
initially have a plan for its location. Mill Run became the ideal
spot after Wilson was introduced to Roehrenbeck through a
mutual friend.
Wilson’s design for the phases of the Mill Run Tranquility Garden
was on display for residents and their families to see during the
Christmas celebration. Seeing so many people admire her work
meant a great deal to Wilson.
“I teared up,” she said. “It was like, ‘Wow, it’s eventually going to
come together.’”
The Tranquility Garden at Mill Run will be constructed
in phases as funding becomes available. To make
charitable contributions to the project, please
contact the National Church Residences
Philanthropy team at (614) 273-3582 or

Impact of
Philanthropy
National Church Residences and
Ruscilli Construction Unite in
Philanthropic Effort at Golf Classic
National Church Residences and
Ruscilli Construction maintained a
professional relationship as our
organization frequently contracted
with Ruscilli to build or renovate our
facilities. In recent history, however, the relationship between
the two has blossomed into an outstanding partnership in
philanthropy.
In 2011, Jack Ruscilli, a member of Muirfield Village Golf Club
(Dublin, Ohio’s home of the PGA Memorial Tournament)
extended the opportunity for National Church Residences to
hold a charity golf classic at the one-of-a-kind facility. The event,
now in its fifth year, has become the signature event in National
Church Residences’ efforts to raise charitable funds to support
the organization’s Permanent Supportive Housing programs.
Over the first five years of the Golf Classic, the partnership
between Ruscilli Construction and National Church Residences has
raised more than $1 million to help Permanent Supportive Housing,
which serves formerly homeless and disabled individuals.
Ruscilli’s innovation, creativity and long-term involvement in
helping to organize this event is unparalleled. Ruscilli
Construction additionally supports National Church Residences
by inviting potential sponsors and industry partners to
participate and play in the annual event. This has allowed
National Church Residences the opportunity to foster
relationships with other potential sponsors that otherwise the
organization would not have had an opportunity to connect with.
Individuals come from throughout the country to participate.
The commitment Ruscilli Construction has made to supporting
the National Church Residences Golf Outing is now in its fifth
year, with many more expected to come. While Ruscilli has
already sponsored and supported the organization through
connections and partnerships, it has also made a consistent
generous charitable donation on a yearly basis to the National
Church Residences foundation.

at National Church Residences Commons at Livingston
(a Permanent Supportive Housing facility in Columbus, Ohio)
was named in honor of Muirfield Village.

Community Medical Services
Community Medical Services is National Church Residences’ new
name for the services formerly known as Aging at Home Medical
Practice, Healthy at Home and Medical Home.
Providing on-site, integrated, person-centered primary care in
housing environments allows National Church Residences to
demonstrate better care, better health and lower costs. Community
Medical Services provides access to health care services to
residents that can prevent emergency room visits and hospital
stays and help them manage chronic illnesses over their lifetime.
Offered in selected senior, adult day and permanent supportive
housing communities, Community Medical Services places
Certified Nurse Practitioners (CNPs) on site. The CNPs are licensed
to diagnose and treat illnesses and are able to prescribe
medications. They offer primary
care to help manage chronic
diseases, like high blood
pressure, congestive heart
failure and respiratory
problems.
CNPs also help residents and
clients to stay well and feel
Andrea Shields, CNP
better by offering same-day
treatment for common
conditions, such as cough and cold symptoms, minor burns and
cuts, and ear infections. In addition, our CNPs can administer
vaccinations, order lab work and perform tests to diagnose and
treat many conditions.
What is Mission Day?
The National Church
Residences annual Mission Day
celebration in 2015 took its
inspiration from the original
event by including a walk/run
event to raise money. National
Church Residences
Development Corp. President,
Michelle Norris, started Mission
Day in 1996 by running a
marathon to raise money for a
piano at the Mill Run assisted
living community.
This year, nearly 250 employees
participated in the walk/run at
12
u
annual report 2014-15
headquarters on Sept. 18, 2015. Mission Day raises awareness
and contributions for the Rev. John R. Glenn Fund, which helps
residents who have run out of funds.
This year the event focused on the impact of ongoing employee
support to ensure the future of the mission. As a not-for-profit
organization, National Church Residences is expected to spend
more than $10 million in charity care to those residents who
have run out of funds.
More than 320 employees in communities across the nation
also enjoyed enjoyed Mission Day, participating in their
own runs and other events to celebrate mission and raise
funds. Events have included proms, rock-a-thons, change
collections, health fairs and more. All proceeds raised in
communities go directly to resident programs.
