WELCOME TO YOUR ART CENTER!
Dear Friends,
INSIDE
Who’s thinking spring? We are!
Suzi Hudson
Executive Director
The ice and snow will soon give way to Minnesota’s most colorful
season, and nowhere will it be more brilliant than at White Bear
Center for the Arts. We invite you to come on over and thaw out
your creative flow. WBCA will be a busy place with a full range
of new classes and clay offerings.
This spring WBCA will host our 40th Northern Lights Fine Arts Exhibition, in the beautiful Ford
Family Gallery. This juried show will feature some of Minnesota and Wisconsin’s finest artists and
is a great opportunity to build your artistic profile, resume, and portfolio. We encourage you to
apply (see inside front cover for details).
As an organization undergoing tremendous evolution, we have a few important highlights to share
regarding WBCA’s dynamic Board of Directors.
First, a very special thank you and round of applause for our friend and outgoing Board Chair,
Robert Cuerden. Among his many roles here, Bob served as chair of the Building Search Committee
in 2009-2010. After the successful (!) purchase of the building, he led the Building Design
Committee over the next 18 months. Ultimately in 2012-2013, Bob confidently led the “Let’s build
it!” Building Committee, and well, you know the rest! WBCA will be forever grateful for his superb
strategic leadership and dedication. To our benefit, Bob will continue to serve another full year as
Ex-Officio Director. Our heartfelt thanks to Bob for his enormous effort in leading this charge.
Additionally, we owe a tremendous debt to two other board member “over-achievers” who have
completed six-year term limits: Roberta Johnson and Neil Johnston. Roberta fearlessly served four
of her six years on the Executive Committee (one as Co-Vice Chair/three as Board Chair), leading
us through the building acquisition and launch of a $3M capital campaign. Robbie’s commitment
to WBCA’s financial wellbeing played a critical role in our success. What can I say… this woman’s
got guts! Robbie will continue to chair WriteNow!, WBCA’s high school writing contest, and serve
as a revered member of WBCA’s finance committee. Thank you!!
Neil Johnston also served his share of years on the Executive Committee, three as Board Co-Vice
Chair, leading us up to “our big leap!” Neil’s academic strengths and contagious passion helped
raise the profile of WBCA’s artists and exhibitions while contributing to the excellence of WBCA’s
programming. Neil has chaired the Northern Lights Exhibition and will continue to co-chair this
event, while also advising the gallery committee. Thank you Neil, for sharing your remarkable
talents with WBCA. We are grateful to see you and Robbie both continue on as Emeritus Directors.
We are equally excited about the election of our 2014 Executive Committee members: Board Chair
Dan Wachtler and Vice-Chair Mary Gove. Pat Berger will continue serving as Treasurer with a capital
“T”, and Alan Kantrud returns as our rock’n Secretary. Thank you for accepting these important
responsibilities and leadership roles.
Finally, a very hearty welcome to four new board members: Donna Bruhl, Craig Campbell, Karen
April Wong, and Malia Yang-Xiong. We are excited to infuse our leadership team with these new
voices, talents, and dedicated individuals.
Here’s to all of you who make Your Art Center the best there is!

Collage Picasso
Faces
“At first glance make everyone stare.”
Think of this phrase every time you create art.
This is about being unique and fearless. In this
workshop, students will design collage papers using
Japanese papers, colored tissue, and vintage finds.
Students will combine these altered papers with
acrylic, inks, and mixed media techniques. Paint
freer, looser, bolder, and more intuitively. Warning:
be prepared to get overly excited. Kathleen Hope
is a full-time artist living in Fountain Hills, Arizona.
Her unique approach to teaching art comes from
her diverse background in mixed media, collage,
interior design, and color psychology.
This workshop requires lots of laughter and outof-the-box thinking. Join Kathleen Hope for this
one-day workshop in making crazy faces. Students
will use paint and collage to create a series of
distorted portraits. Think Picasso, Francis Bacon,
and Basquiat. All levels may participate. Bring
lots of imagination and let the faces appear. As a
group, the class will come up with creative names
for the personalities that emerge.

Surface Decoration
Lynnea Schwieters
Looking for new ways to add surface decoration to
your clay surface? Consider using resist techniques
to integrate your design onto the clay surface
where your glazes can pool and accentuate your
form. In this class we will explore several ways to
create templates that are placed on the clay body
at the greenware stage. Applying slip over the
design along with the use of liquid resists such as
latex, wax and acrylic will be demonstrated. Lynnea
Schwieters works with high fire porcelain clay.
In her demonstration she will show you how she
makes large platters, alters them, applies surface
techniques including the design of templates,
carving, incising and slip application. After the
demonstration students will create their own plate
on the wheel altering the form and applying their
desired surface decoration. Come to class prepared
with ideas for your templates.

Build a Portable
Brick Oven
Raku:
Out of the Ashes
Join award-winning baker David S. Cargo to learn
how to build a portable stacked-brick oven. The
oven is built from stacked bricks that are not
mortared together and can be moved after the
oven is built. Students will learn how to build
a small oven by themselves and go from bare
ground to cooking pizza in about 4 hours. Class
discussion covers some of the differences between
these portable brick ovens and more familiar
designs such as Alan Scott ovens, Forno Bravo
Pompeii ovens, and cob ovens such as those made
popular by Kiko Denzer. The class covers siting
the oven, preparing the ground for the oven, and
then the practical techniques for construction.
Every student gets a handout with plans for three
different sizes of ovens, their bills of materials, and
recipes for use with the oven. The oven is built to
demonstrate the techniques used, and the plans
that show how the ovens go together will be
read. While the fire is heating the oven up, David
demonstrates how to make dough for pizza, bread,
naan, and pita bread. Later in the afternoon, the
dough is formed into the proper shapes for baking,
and some dough is formed for a loaf of bread.
Finally, the pita bread, naan, and pizzas are baked
(and eaten) and then the loaf of bread goes into
the oven. Please bring a lunch for an hour break at
noon, plus hat, gloves, note-taking materials and
sturdy shoes (in case of falling bricks).
Let’s play with fire! Wisconsin Artist and Raku
potter Mark Lusardi will guide the discovery of the
ancient Japanese process of Raku firing. Raku is
a technique developed in 16th century Japan to
enhance the Japanese tea ceremony. Watch as
glazes transform the raw materials into molten
glass! Participants will enjoy a fiery day of
discussion, demonstrations, glazing, and of course,
a hands-on firing. This workshop is perfect for
beginners to the advanced artist. Participants will
be provided with a wide variety of glazes and tools
to finish their Raku pieces, and are encouraged
to participate in all aspects of the firing process.
Participants must bring a minimum of four bisque
pieces and three bisque 6”x6” tiles. Bring a potluck
dish to share for lunch.

Oil or Acrylic
Learn the art of oil painting using paints that
behave like traditional oils but clean up with soap
Painters
Mary Jo Van Dell
Many classes teach how to paint. This instructor
coaches students on becoming artists. In this class,
each participant will work individually and receive
instruction and encouragement to enhance and
develop personal skills and style. Confidence will
set in as students realize their own potential. This
is a class for the student wishing to go beyond the
fundamentals of painting and into a deeper realm
of creativity. Students may bring a blank canvas
with something in mind to work on, or a piece
already in progress. Experience with painting is a
prerequisite for this class.

Join in on a new endeavor of working with hot
beeswax which contains a resin as a hardening

Workshop
Introduction to
Chalk Pastels
Chalk Pastels –
Level II
The focus of this workshop is to help students
find, trust and enrich their own artistic voice
through the wonderful medium of pastels. The
class will look at techniques to learn how value,
composition, style and color turn into great works
of art. Students should bring whatever pastels they
already have, if any, and a notebook. Cynthia will
supply a variety of papers and a variety of hard
and soft pastels. Instructor will teach how to create
sanded paper and how to under-paint for your
pastel painting. Students should feel free to bring
some of their own photographs, especially those
that have personal meaning. It is best to work from
photos that have strong contrast, both darks and
lights. Hint: usually landscapes start from about
30-40 feet in front of the viewer. $15 material fee
covers paper, Golden Pastel Ground, neutral Acrylic
paint and water soluble pastels. The instructor will
provide some images as well. Students can look
forward to Cynthia sharing her knowledge so they
may discover the luminosity of this pure pigment
and capture the spirit of pastels.
People who like fresh, pure, vivid colors will open
their artistic world to new possibilities and creative
insights by working with pastels. Students will
learn about the materials and tools, explore basic
pastel techniques, and learn to combine pastels
with other mixed media. Each week will be filled
with demonstrations and experimentation.
Chalk Pastels-Level II is a continuation of
Introduction to Chalk Pastels. The instructor will
individually mentor students with their ongoing
pastel artwork projects. This class will offer support
and encouragement with artistic critiques, shared
creative thoughts, and new techniques in a
nonthreatening environment. It is recommended
that inexperienced students take Introduction to
Chalk Pastels before taking this class. Please bring
supplies and pastel project ideas.

Clouds and Water:
Pastel Topics
Laura Frykman
This class is for artists who have always wanted
to develop specific skills in painting water, clouds,
or some other tough visual challenge. Students
can bring a chosen topic to this class and
play their way through any mental block with
demonstrations and discussion. Even for oil and
acrylic painters, taking some time with pastels
to break down the subject into its elements,
values, and rhythms will breathe new life and
authenticity into landscapes. It’s like drawing
with pure pigment, and pastels uniquely convey
the dance of light. No worries about oil, turp, or
brushes; just the expressive self and a sandpaper
page… and any photo references desired.

Gestural Drawing
Mike Reed
An effective drawing somehow “feels” right
because contrast, contour, elasticity, structure, size,
line quality, texture, and descriptive detail work
together to create a sense of drama, form, and
movement. These characteristic elements are all
components of “gesture,” and learning to recognize
and manipulate the underlying gesture of objects
is essential to effectively rendering everything
from dynamic figures, flowing drapery, and delicate
organic forms, to exaggerated cartoons, graphic
design, and lively abstracts. Some people seem
to have an innate grasp of gesture and how to
express it through drawing. Those with less native
understanding often dismiss themselves as lacking
talent, but the ability to recognize and use gesture
to create effective drawings can be acquired by
instruction, observation, and practice. Learning to
see and interpret gesture is an ongoing process
for all artists, and this class is designed to benefit
artists of all experience levels.

Drawing on the
Right Side of the
Brain
Drawing on the
Right Side of the
Brain II
Some people have always wanted to learn how
to draw but have been scared because they lack
an artistic background or believe one needs to
have “inborn talent.” This unique, two-part series
will put those fears to rest, using an acclaimed
workbook with drawing exercises that have
proven to be highly effective. Students will
learn to access the right side of the brain, which
is where non-verbal and creative abilities are
concentrated. This series is designed to teach
complete novices how to draw and those who
already draw to deepen their artistic perception.
They will learn the foundation of drawing,
“seeing” as an artist sees. Students will be
challenged by exercises both in and outside of
class, and their efforts will be rewarded with
the gratification of being able to draw better
than they would have ever guessed. Handouts
outlining the material, a workbook tailored to
the subject, and individual critiques will help
everyone accomplish their goal of drawing better.
Please register at least a week in advance for this
class. Please let the office know if you already
have the workbook. Students cannot miss the
first week of class.
Continue to engage the right side of the brain
and learn how to draw more effectively in this
intermediate/advanced drawing class. Students
will draw an “after” room interior and an “after”
self-portrait (the “before” pictures will have been
drawn in the Level I class) and will be amazed at
their level of competency.

Ikebana
Carol Lui
Ikebana means literally, “the arrangement of
living material in water.” The art of Japanese
flower arrangement developed in the 15th
century and has its roots in ancient Chinese
flower arrangement. It began as an aid to
meditation and as a way to personalize
nature and reflect on the human experience.
There are several thousand schools of Ikebana
at present, Ichiyo and Ohara being among the
most popular. The Ichiyo School was founded
in 1937 and is one of the ‘modern’ schools
of Ikebana, famous for innovative, free style
of Japanese flower arrangement. Carol will
teach the first lesson in the Ichiyo School,
the Upright Style. The second class will be
in the Slanting Form. Students will use the
instructor’s vase and needle holder (kenzan).
If students prefer to find out more about
keeping their arrangement intact by bringing
their own vase and kenzan, please read about
what to purchase at www.WhiteBearArts.org.

Beginning
Calligraphy
Pat Barrett
The application of calligraphy (“the art of beautiful
writing”) is endless. It can be used for creating
wedding invitations, greeting cards, or addressing
envelopes; it can be used to enhance arts and
crafts projects such as nature printing, scrap
booking, photography, personalizing picture
frames, writing in hand-made books, or even
enhancing fine art paintings. In this class students
will learn the basic steps necessary to write the
lower-case Italic hand. The basic steps to be
learned in this class include: getting comfortable
with the broad-edge pen; letter proportion; letter
shape, slant, and stroke direction; the importance
of spaces, and many other pertinent points in the
art of calligraphy. Because these steps are the basis
for any calligraphic hand, students should leave
the last class being able to analyze other “hands”
and also have a better understanding of the steps
necessary to recreate them. Please bring a piece
of 18 x 24” foam core. The instructor will discuss
other supplies at the first class.
Please note: Students that have already learned
the basics of calligraphy yet desire to have more
guidance are welcome.

Introduction
to Stained Glass
Arcs are curved, free-standing panels that look
great on a windowsill with natural light coming
through them, or on a table with a candle behind.
Students will make a 6” X 13” curved arc panel.
Students will create their own individual designs
using a variety of glass forms: sheet glass, frit,
confetti, and stringer. Glass cutting techniques will
be discussed and demonstrated prior to students
beginning their work. No experience in glass
cutting is necessary, but it is helpful. All tools are
provided, just bring a lunch. Students should wear
long pants and closed-toe shoes. Long hair needs
to be pulled back.
Students will create three fused glass Easter Eggs.
Each egg will have a hanger on the top so it can
be hung on a branch or a window frame or wall.
Students will learn glass safety information before
working. There will be glass cutting, sawing,
and grinding. No experience is required, but it
is helpful. Students should wear long pants and
closed-toe shoes. Long hair needs to be pulled
back.
This introductory class will give students the
opportunity to learn the copper-foil stained glass
technique. Students will first decide on the pattern
of their piece. Pattern sheets are available for use
or students can design their own. Glass is chosen
and the pieces are cut using glass cutters, grinders,
and saws. Once the pieces are cut and cleaned,
the students will solder their pieces together
and attach copper wire for hanging. Students
can bring a special piece of glass they want to
incorporate into their design. No previous glass
cutting experience is necessary. Students should
wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Long hair
needs to be pulled back. All tools provided, just
bring a bag lunch.

CLAY
Wheel Basics
Carved Relief Tiles
Pots with Attitude!
This class will focus on the basic throwing
skills of centering, opening, and lifting the
clay. Students will do this by making tumblers,
mugs, vases and/or bowls in multiples. Throwing
multiples of the same form allows variations to
be explored. Unwanted directions can be edited
and the desired form will become clearer to the
artist. The class is open to all skill levels. Those
with throwing experience can use this time to
evaluate how they work without expectations of
results. Materials are included.
This class will focus on carving relief images into
tiles. Students will bring a sketch, drawing, or
image that will be used to carve directly into a
tile to render the image in low relief. Students
will learn techniques to increase the visual depth
of the image without increasing the thickness
of the tile. Please bring at least one 8”x 8” image
on plain paper to the first class. A straight edge
(ruler), dull pencil, and clay carving tools will be
helpful. The instructor will have a small utility
knife for sale for $1.50. All levels are welcome.
Materials are included.
Who said pots need to be round, or even square?
Have fun experimenting with clay to create pots
with personality! Work with sassy slabs, coy
coils, and adorable darts to create one-of-a-kind
pieces ranging from functional to sculptural.
Handbuilding techniques will be emphasized, but
the same techniques can give thrown work some
“altered” styling as well. Come prepared to think
outside the cylinder! Students will learn about
tricks and tools of hand-building and surfaces.
Materials are included.

Get to know and use the basics of your digital
camera... and MAKE ART! 2 sessions to enjoy using
your digital camera, keeping it simple by knowing
the zoom, the flash, and the memory card retrieval!
The H’Art of Photography summer kids’ class has
expanded to include you too! No fancy knowledge
of cameras necessary, just capture the moment.
Create a two dimensional piece of artwork using
lots of different textures and mixed media that
is based on expressionism and abstract creation.
Instead of having a specific image to create, think
about a feeling, perhaps related to a memory like
a favorite trip or event, and then choose color,
texture, and shape that connect with that feeling.
Artistic creation and being an artist doesn’t have
to be about being “really good at drawing.” This
class is about expression in a way that any level of
ability can feel really great about.
The mad scientist is in the laboratory again,
brewing up mysterious potions and intriguing
experiments using simple ingredients and having
lots of fun.
