Lone Star Regional Banquet Table Centerpiece
TALEPIPE THE PUBLICATION OF THE TEXAS CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL CORVETTE RESTORERS SOCIETY FOURTH QUARTER 2015 ISSUE Lone Star Regional Banquet Table Centerpiece President’s Message By Tim Ehlers, President, TX Chapter NCRS Congratulations on the best Lone Star Regional to date! All the feedback I’ve received has been positive with the Texas Regional being one that both members and judges look forward to attending. I hear remarks complimenting the venue, the organization, the smooth operation, the judging quality, and the event’s leadership. This year, the car owners appreciated the implementation of our rain plan to keep the cars and operations judges as dry as possible. One owner was disappointed the cold start & fast idle checks were waived because he put in a lot of effort to ensure his car would pass! You’ll read about some of the event highlights and results elsewhere in this edition of the newsletter. I’d like to express my personal thanks and gratitude to the event organization team under Bob Demmel’s leadership: Bob Demmel – Event chairman, vendor coordination, and facility management. David King – Judging chairman and event photographer. Bill and Faye King – Registration chairman, packet preparation, merchandise sales, and goody bag leaders. Teresa King – Silent auction benefiting Victim Relief Ministries this year. John Lejsal and Gary Chesnut – Trailer parking. Bill and Donna Usher – Election process and general admission. Carla Ehlers – Registration, door prize drawing, and general admission. Brad Mitchell – Event financials, merchandise sales, and registration. Tom Douglas – Event merchandise and sales. Dave Ewan, Jerry Whitsett, and Ken Robb – Awards banquet table centerpieces. Bob Demmel, Bill Usher, Dave Ewan, Tim Gilmore, and Paul Diamanti – Financial sponsors. Bruce deLeon – Operations judging coordination. George Dupont – Event sponsorships and publicity. Danny Reed and Dennis Coleman – Event publicity. Doug Aitelli, Hugh Preacher, and Dave & Jo Houlihan – Floor layout and show floor parking. Doug Banner – Website posting. Plus others that stepped in to contribute. You should be proud of your achievement this year! Many in attendance don’t realize the number of talented and dedicated people it takes to pull off a high quality event like this! This time each year, I get the pleasure of recognizing someone from our Chapter with the President’s Award. Typically, I present it at our General Membership Meeting and again at the Regional Awards Banquet. I select a member who, in my opinion, contributes to the NCRS & to our Chapter and demonstrates a high level of enthusiasm for our Hobby. Here’s the inscription from this year’s award: President's Award - 2015 David King In recognition of your chapter contributions, enthusiastic spirit, promotion of our judging process, and professional photography! Please join me in congratulating David….well deserved! Bill Usher, Vice President and Chairman of the Nominating Committee, organized and conducted a membership wide vote by ballot process for this year’s officer election. You’ll read the detailed results of this year’s election in Bruce Deleon’s minutes of the Membership Meeting. I’d like to congratulate Bob Demmel, President and Doug Aitelli, DFW Area Coordinator effective January 1, 2016. I’d also like to thank Hugh Preacher for your service as DFW Area Coordinator. For some reason, people laugh when I tell them the entire slate won with landslide victories! The results of the election were: President – Bob Demmel Judging Chairman – David King Treasurer – Brad Mitchell Dallas Ft. Worth Area Coordinator – Doug Aitelli Austin San Antonio Area Coordinator – Tim Gilmore Our turnover and orientation process for Bob and Doug is already underway. You’ll see their contact information on the officer page of the newsletter with this edition. These talented, experienced gentlemen will continue to improve our Texas Chapter. I know I am looking forward to continued involvement any way I can. In closing, I was very humbled at both the Membership Meeting and again at the Awards Banquet to receive two awards, a lighted plaque and an engraved silver platter. Thank you to the Texas Chapter for that recognition; it has been a pleasure to serve as your President! Over the years I have encountered horns that do not work or do not sound correct. They may make noise, but not the correct sound or they may not work at all. Here is what has worked for me 9 out of 10 times. Maybe I have just been lucky. 1. Position the horn in a vise so that it will hold liquid. That’s right hold liquid. 2. Take a spray can of WD 40 and spray it into the bell of the horn until the horn is full of liquid WD 40. 3. Let the horn stay full of WD 40 for at least 5 days. Check it daily to make sure it is holding the liquid. 4. After 5 days, take the horn out of the vise and turn it so that the WD 40 drains out. 5. Let the horn sit with the opening down for at least 24 hours, so that it fully drains. 6. Place the horn back in the vise. 7. Take a battery of the correct voltage (remember some horns are 6 volt and some are 12 volt) and hook it up to the horn. A set of battery cables work good. Ground the horn and then touch the positive cable to the horn. 8. You will be surprised how many horns sound off correctly the first time. 9. Should the horn not sound correctly after several attempts, repeat the entire process. There is the occasion when a horn just never comes around, so if it is the number and date matching horn that you need for your restoration, send it off to a rebuilder. ________________________________________________________________________________________________ Tentative Schedule for 2016 Chapter Judging Events The tentative schedule for the two 2016 chapter judging events has been set: Saturday, April 16 – Austin San Antonio Area Chapter Event – Hill Country Galleria, Bee Cave, TX Saturday, May 7 – DFW Area Chapter Event – Chuck & Dave Anderson’s Shop (Automotive Performance Unlimited) – Ft. Worth, TX Judging will be limited to 4 cars (1 C4/C5) at each meet. You will receive more detailed registration & logistical information once the details for each meet have been finalized. The Houston Area will not host a chapter judging event in 2016. THE TALEPIPE 5 Vice President’s Column by Bill Usher The 2015 Regional has come and gone and we are into the holidays, a time when you think you have all the time in the world to work on your car but really don’t. I don’t know how many times I welcomed November and December in Houston because I thought I would be able to progress some of my projects but such plans were dashed by holiday events, holiday preparations and a myriad of other priorities that seemed to just parachute out of the sky. But so goes life and the world. Reflecting on Frisco 2015, Bob Demmel and a dedicated cast of volunteers did another great job at executing a first class regional event. The Lone Star regional with its great venue withstood all the tests thrown at it by attendees, cars and Mother Nature, the last proving to be the most unstable. Rain in varying amounts occurred from Day 1 to Day 3, but miraculously, did not fall when the cars were moved into and out of the show floor. There were several PV cars that did have to undergo their tests with some rainfall, but most escaped this fate. With Operations checks being performed inside the parking garage, weather protection for this test for all Flight cars was built into the venue. Attendees appeared to enjoy the hotel and event in general. The new participating charitable organization appeared to be having a very productive time with their silent auction activity and for them I am very happy. Like many people, we were donors and buyers as well. The Judged car showing was strong given the recent trend in lower rosters for other regional meets. Somewhere in this issue I am sure that David, Tim or Bob is commenting on this same fact and backing it up with numbers. It was gratifying to see a fairly solid representation of C-1s in the flight judging turnout. Participation in this broad group had been dropping off at ours and other events in recent years. Our participation was driven by our entry of our 1962, 300hp, white roadster which was its first flight judging (ever) following completion of its body-off restoration .The car was a complete and original, but neglected , “barn find” from October 2009 with no particular completion date in mind. With my priorities being focused so intently on our 1956 car and its Duntov goal, the 1962 car came up second fiddle when it came to time invested prior to Sept 2015. Then, of course, the remaining 6 weeks before Frisco became a frantic race to address as much as possible which might be sensitive during judging. The new revised “super manual” used for judging 61 and 62 cars provided very detailed descriptions of each criterion, and I can only say that there was a lot of detail stuff to correct. I did the best I could and got the car to the event. It did very well and achieved a Top Flight Award on this, its first “go-round”. Now I, like all flight judging participants, am left with a list of things to further correct which will keep me interested and busy into the new year. This month of December will mark the last month of Tim Ehlers ‘Presidency’ of our Chapter. Operating close to Tim in my role as VP, I can say that Tim fulfilled the role since 2009 in a superb fashion. I have met few people who were as continually interested, engaged and fun to work with as Tim. I am sure that our new President, Bob Demmel, with his vast experience within the greater NCRS sphere will do just as well. The 2016 event schedule is printed in this issue of TalePipe, and it’s not too soon to begin thinking about which events you may want to attend. Finally, in closing, I would like to wish all our Chapter members Happy Holidays and best wishes for a great new year. THE TALEPIPE 6 For What it is Worth – Not Much: By Ken Robb Do you remember the first award you or your corvette earned? I know that may be taxing some of our memories, but here is a blast from the past for us. THE TALEPIPE 7 NCRS Regional VII Representative News By Dave Ewan The last quarter has been very busy for us as I am sure it has been for many of you. October found us in Warwick, RI for the planning meeting of the 2016 National. (We will be doing the same thing in October of 2016 for the 2017 National in San Antonio.) Warwick is very close to Newport Beach where many famous Sailboat races for the cup of the Americas were held. It was also the location where many of the rich and famous had their summer homes. The tours will give you a chance to tour several of those homes. The most famous of them is the Breakers which was built by the Vanderbilt’s and all I can say is that is that extravagance is only way I can describe it. It is right on the Ocean and the view is spectacular. There are many other ones including Rosemont which was owned by the founders of the Winston Salem Tobacco Co. You will also have the chance to have a dinner in one of these homes and see how the rich and famous dined. In addition there will be a boat tour of one of the islands and Light houses. There is also a tour of a Billionaire’s Car Collection. In his museum, he has several Corvettes including a Gold 63 Coupe customized by George Barris. The Road tour will include a chance to run your car on the track at the Thompson Motor Speedway on the last day. We expect a lot of cars and hope you can attend. We also attended the Texas Regional and had a great time, great food, great cars and good friends. It was good to see that we had more cars this year over last year. You guys did an outstanding job and I heard nothing but good comments. Texas can be very proud as most chapters are amazed that we can always put on a great regional. David King developed the idea to conduct guided tours of the cars with the paying guests to give them some idea what the cars really are. I am sure you will see his idea used at other regionals as well as the national. Florida is coming up in Lakeland FL in January. They always have a good turn out and a large swap meet if you need a part. We will have a non-voting board meeting there to plan for the spring meeting and review the 2018 events. Both Texas and Florida regionals have already been approved. Please do not forget the Judging Retreat in Grapevine, Texas as it is filling up fast, only the second section is still open. It is a great way to learn judging points and gain knowledge about the judging system. Lynn and I hope that you and your families have a wonderful Holiday Season. THE TALEPIPE 8 JUDGING CHAIRMAN’S CORNER BY DAVID KING The 2015 Lone Star Regional is done and by all accounts it was an overwhelming success. Each year we learn something new and then try to make the following year better. This year I was talking to Tim Ehlers in the CC looking at all the non-NCRS people coming in to look at the cars. I told Tim that we should offer some sort of short tour every hour or so to explain to the people about the NCRS and give some history on the corvette. Tim thought it was a great idea and suggested we start right then as opposed to next year. So the next thing I know I am making an announcement over the intercom that Tim will be conducting tours starting now. It was an immediate success. Many of the public went on Tim’s tours. Honestly I could not tell who was having the better time, the public or Tim. This is something we definitely need to continue. In fact I heard that the national folks got wind of our tours and plan to offer them at next year’s national. The other big issue was the weather. We had several cancellations because of the pending rain. However those folks missed out because we were fortunate to miss the rain in both getting the cars into the CC and out again on Saturday. God must love Corvettes, because it rained the whole time except for when we were moving cars. The award count was as follows: Top Flight – 30 Second Flight – 11 Third Flight – 0 PV pass – 8 PV fail – 2 Bowtie Display car – 1 Special Interest Display (Tim Ehlers ’54 chassis) - 1 Sportsman – 6 Total cars – 60 We also awarded our 2015 class of the Charlie Cadenhead Presidential Award. Carla Ehlers earned this prestigious award. She was presented an award plaque and a real Hawaiian shirt with the CCPA logo patch attached. This is a really special award so I encourage everyone to work at achieving one. You can learn the details on our chapter website. Carla also was presented with her Sportsman Award. The Sportsman Award is one of the most fun awards a member can earn – all you have to do is drive a corvette to NCRS meets! This is a chapter level award and it is fortunate that our chapter host a regional each year. This gives me the opportunity to talk up the Sportsman Award and present it in front of a larger crowd at our regional’s awards ceremony. There will be two chapter meets in 2016 along with the regional. Keep an eye out for the dates. THE TALEPIPE 9 NCRS National Convention 2017 by Bob Demmel The San Antonio National Convention s fast approaching—I know 2 years sounds like a long way off, but it is not. We have already made a site visit and the new Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center on the River Walk is shaping up to be a fantastic venue. The exhibit hall we will be using encompasses over 180,000 square feet, so we will need a lot of cars and vendors to fill the space. With 2017 being the Year of the ’67 we hope to have a massive display of 1967 Corvettes. To pull off an event like this we will need a whole host of volunteers. If you want to help, please contact me and I’ll put you down for a slot. If you have a particular area you would like to work in we can accommodate you, if you volunteer early. Ken Robb: [email protected] THE TALEPIPE 11 Austin San Antonio Area Coordinator's report By Tim Gilmore Things have been quiet in the Austin/San Antonio area since the October Regional in Frisco. Cars & Coffee at the Oasis continues to be a big draw on the second Sunday of each month. As usual, we are involved in much Corvette troubleshooting and repair at Wilkins Electric every Saturday morning. Within the past few months we have replaced a clutch on a ’66 Corvette (twice unfortunately), repaired and replaced a differential cover on a ’67 Corvette, completed a tune-up on two ’67 Corvettes, replaced the intake manifold on a ’67 400 horse Corvette, cleaned the chassis of four ’67 Corvettes, repaired holes drilled in the inner fender of a ’67 Corvette, replaced the leaf spring of a ’67 Corvette, replaced front/rear bumpers on a ’67 Corvette, and completed numerous electrical trouble shooting items on many mid-year Corvettes. We’re always doing something, even if it’s cleaning trim items or replacing nuts and bolts. Come join us sometime. Bring your car if you like and we can help you with any ailments it may have. For a bunch of rookies, we’ve got a pretty good grasp on how to fix these old cars. Houston Area Coordinator’s Report By Paul Diamanti No report this period. Dallas Ft. Worth Area Coordinator's report By Doug Aitelli My name is Doug Aitelli and I will be taking over the DFW Area Coordinator role starting January 1st. I have been a longtime lover of Corvettes, mostly the older cars but also more recently the C7. As you would expect from that description I now own a 1960 (Black w/silver coves), a 1970 (lots of modifications, not an NCRS car), and a brand new 2015 (white 3LT ZR51). I am also in the Lonestar Corvette Club, and recently showed the 1970 as part of LSCC’s entry at the Ft Worth New Car show in November. I am looking forward to getting involved and seeing what additional things we can do. If anyone has any ideas for events please feel free to contact me at [email protected], or on my cell at (817)296-0763. THE TALEPIPE 12 2015 TEXAS Regional Photos THE TALEPIPE 13 THE TALEPIPE 14 THE TALEPIPE 15 MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER, 2015 NATIONAL CONVENTION OF THE NATIONAL CORVETTE RESTORER’S SOCIETY (NCRS) TIME & PLACE: The Texas Chapter of the NCRS held its annual chapter meeting and a Regional Judging event on October 23, 2015. This meeting was held in Frisco, TX at the Embassy Suites Convention Center. Tim welcomed all who attended and had a few announcements. BUSINESS The meeting was called to order by the President, Tim Ehlers at 5 pm. First order of business was the election results for board positions that opened up this year. Vice President Bill Usher presented the results as Chairman of the Nominating Committee. This was the first year for conducting the elections prior to the meeting using email voting. We sent out 258 ballots and 78 email ballots were returned as votes. The official results of elections for open positions this year were: President – Bob Demmel Treasurer – Brad Mitchell Judging Chairman – David King Dallas / Ft Worth Area Coordinator – Doug Aitelli Austin / San Antonio Area Coordinator – Tim Gilmore Tim then introduced all the chapter officers to the membership. Brad Mitchell gave a treasures report noting that the results for the regional will not be included and available for a few weeks. He said we are in a good financial position with a $31,000 balance. A review was then presented of the 2016 and 2017 regional events. Gary Chesnut spoke about the national judging retreat that is scheduled in Fort Worth for February, 2016. This event will include class time as well as hands on judging experience Tim again reported to us that he and Bob Demmel were working on the details for the hosting of the 2017 National NCRS Convention for 2017 in San Antonio, TX. We will need plenty of volunteers to put this event on and anyone interested in helping with this event should email their name to Bob Demmel with their interest. We will also host a regional event in 2017. Tim then presented a picture tour of the various chapter events that were held in 2015 showing shots of the members having fun at all the various events that were held this year. THE TALEPIPE 16 John Lejsal presented an overview of the 2016 chapter road tour that he called the “Plains Road Tour” that will be conducted in the Texas Panhandle this spring. The National road tour to R.I. will be starting July 10 and go thru the last night out on July 16. Tim then presented the 2015 Presidents Award for chapter participation and contributions to David King. Bob Demmel presented a sponsor award to Carr Campbell of Carr’s Corvettes and Customs for 5 years of sponsoring the Lone Star Regional. Bob also presented the outgoing president’s award to Tim Ehlers. The next issue of the TalePipe will be coming out before the end of the year. Meeting adjourned at 5:45 PM. Bruce deLeon Secretary _________________________________________________________________________________________ Lone Star Regional 2015 Wrap Up By Bob Demmel The Lone Star Regional wrapped up with the banquet on October 24, 2015. The event was a success thanks to all the hard work of numerous volunteers and the participation of the car owners and judges who traveled from across the country to join us for some Texas sized hospitality. The weather forecast for the weekend was not good and as a result, several participants opted out at the last minute which reduced the car count. With the skies looking threatening, the Operations Judging was moved from the parking area to undercover in the parking garage. The last of the operations checks completed just as the rains commenced. The last couple of cars were sprinkled on but were not drenched before they got inside. The skies then opened up and it rained cats, dogs, and longhorns for the rest of the weekend—or at least until it came time to move the cars out. The rains stopped at about noon on Saturday. The streets dried out and the cars were moved out while it was dry. The chapter presented Tim Ehlers with an appreciation award for his six years of service as chapter president. Carr Campbell was also presented with a plaque for his five years of sponsorship of the regional. Overall, with the help of the sponsors, volunteers, owners, and judges the event was a success. John Lejsal Road Tour Chairman The Lejsal Scale THE TALEPIPE 18 Trailer Registration Renewal in Texas….the changes of 2015 By Bill Usher For the myriads of Texans who own and operate motor vehicles on public roads, last March, 2015, the Texas Dept of Public Safety made revisions to the procedure for registration renewal which brought about more stress in the renewal process. In an initiative to reduce the windshield decals from one from two, a requirement was implemented to have road vehicle inspection completed PRIOR to the registration renewal. There was plenty of confusion during the implementation period especially regarding the timing of and allowable time window for the inspection….and the fact that without a successful inspection, the registration could not be renewed. Now I am figuring that most car owners got through this one way or another. My purpose here, however, is to discuss the impact such a law has had on the thousands of Texans who own larger trailers for car or boat hauling. Although there has been an inspection requirement for trailers with actual gross weights exceeding 4,500lbs for a number of years, the requirement was rarely enforced. As a result, a very large number of trailers in this category, renewed tags annually and were towed without bothering to obtain an inspection sticker. The sticker which wound up being mounted in any number of different spots on the trailer could be very difficult to find or see anyway. As said previously, enforcement was rare or practically non-existent in many areas. With the March 2015 changes to the registration procedure (requiring the pre inspection), a large number of owners were surprised when they were unable to renew their trailer tags. Newsletters from various Texas county tax offices even commented on what a mess this issue became in 2015, as negligent owners reacted when unable to renew their tags on a trailer that had fallen into typical disrepair over years of neglect. I am assuming that trailer service shops suddenly got quite busy…..and that Harbor Freight sold out of replacement taillights. Since the actual gross weight (GVWR) of practically any open or enclosed car hauler will exceed 4,500lbs, all such trailers require pre-inspection. If inspected, the following items below are addressed. This list was taken from the Texas DPS website. Brakes/brake system Tire condition Wheel assembly Tail lamps Stop lamps Directional lamps License plate light Clearance and marker lights depending on trailer dimensions Rear and side reflectors depending on trailer dimensions Evidence of correct VIN or serial number on frame or body Also covered would be the presence and integrity of safety chains, emergency break-away activators and the electrical umbilical cable and plug. Most inspection stations that do inspections on cars and trucks can also do them on trailers and are happy to inspect trailers. The logistical hassle is that the owner has to bring the trailer to them. Owners of multiple trailers, in particular smaller ones with no inspection prerequisite, will be tempted to “borrow” plates from the trailer with current tags. Another, more onerous effect, of the new rule will be that valid registration stickers and license plates will become targets of theft in un-secured open areas and trailer parking lots. Over the past dozen years I have had 2 renewal tags and 2 license plates stolen. It is a common THE TALEPIPE 19 occurrence in boat trailer storage areas. And that was before the new inspection requirements which will make the renewal process even more of an effort. Good advice is to remove the license plate if the trailer is stored in a large trailer parking lot, or at a minimum, secures the license plate with rivets or “difficult to remove” bolts with lock-nuts. While traveling, keep a copy of your inspection and registration renewal in the trailer or tow vehicle to show to law enforcement should you be stopped for lack of a license plate that got lifted on a trip. Most of all, keep your rig in good repair and all the lights and brakes operational. It will then make the annual inspection and subsequent tag renewal go easily instead of becoming an unexpected nightmare. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Financial Report by Brad Mitchell Statement of Cash Receipts and Disbursements as of November 30, 2015 Cash Balance as of January 31, 2015 17,586 Cash Receipts: Membership dues Houston Chapter Meet Bee Cave Chapter Meet Lone Star Regional Meet (less refunds) Merchandise Sales Interest Income Sponsorships and Donations 3,269 100 100 37,843 162 2 3,300 Total Cash Receipts 44,775 Cash Disbursements: Chapter Business Houston Chapter Meet Bee Cave Chapter Meet Lone Star Regional Meet Road Tour PV Workshop Merchandise Purchases (for stock) Charitable Donations Name Tags Future Deposits and Fees Pay Pal/Square Fees 350 821 0 34,963 1,364 115 901 350 716 500 926 Total Cash Disbursements 41,006 Cash Balance as of November 30, 2015 21,355 THE TALEPIPE 20 2016 Chapter, Regional, and National Events: January 20-23, 2016 – Florida Regional (Lakeland, FL) February 27-28, 2016 – Houston Corvette Chevy Expo at Galveston Convention Center (Galveston, TX) March 10-13, 2016 – Judges Retreat (Dallas, TX) April 4 - 8, 2016 – TX Chapter Plains Trail Road Tour (Texas Panhandle) April 16, 2016 – Austin Chapter Judging Meet (Hill Country Galleria, Bee Cave, TX) - Tentative April 21-23, 2016 – Indiana Regional (Auburn, IN) May 7, 2016 – DFW Chapter Judging Meet (Chuck & Dave Anderson’s Shop, Ft.
