BEST HORSE(S) INVOLVED WITH Srikandi Set Square Bashboy Jameka LAST MAG YOU READ: Cosmopolitan IF YOU WEREN’T A TRAINER, YOU’D BE: Probably a farrier or some kind of farmer. WHAT DO YOU DO TO RELAX Motorcyclying and golf. FAVOURITE TV SHOW: MTV (Music channel) WHO WOULD YOU LOVE TO MEET: Serena Williams FAVOURITE HOLIDAY DESTINATION: Thailand or Bali. FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WAIKATO STUD: What impressed me a lot was the lay out and just how the farm is set out. The most enjoyable part is claybird shooting at Game Gully. HOW DID YOU COME TO GET INVOLVED IN THE INDUSTRY My father took me along to the races as a young fella. I decided I wanted to be a jockey. I used to race motorcross as a kid, so the competitive side of being a jockey appealed. It all just went from there. FAVOURITE MOVIE: Days of Thunder CHILDHOOD HEROES: Craig Dack - the best Australian motorcross rider at the time. CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Any of the Gr.1’s really. Bashboy’s third Grand National Steeplechase win was special, as was Regina Coeli’s win in Warrnambool’s Grand Annual Steeplechase. Regina Coeli was a half to Al Garhood (Zabeel), who was a horse I started training with. Al Garhood won Warrnambool’s Grand Annual Steeplechase twice. We bought his dam in Sydney when she was believed to be in-foal to Pure Theatre. This foal turned out to be Regina Coeli and she won the Grand Annual 4 years after Al Garhood. To win the same race again was a big thrill. NAME 3 PEOPLE WHO YOU’D LOVE TO INVITE TO DINNER Alain de Royer-Dupre - French trainer who trained Americain Tony McCoy - Best jumps rider in the world Serena Williams - Professional tennis player IF SOMEONE WAS TO PLAY YOU IN A MOVIE, WHO WOULD YOU LOVE IT TO BE: Sideshow Bob WHAT’S ONE THING NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU: Over there (NZ), probably that I’m a reasonable shooter and that I have a background as a competitive motorcross rider. FOA L OF T HE WEEK - S ava beel x Disg uised col t - Waikato Stud’s O’Reilly mare Disguised is the dam of the dual Gr.1 winner Costume (Savabeel) and stakes winner Masquerade (No Excuse Needed) along with two other winners. This Savabeel colt is a full-brother to Costume (pictured closest right) and is a half-brother to a Rock N Pop colt, who heads to the 2016 NZB Premier Yearling Sale (Lot 259). Soriano has, since then, continued on her winning way when scoring in emphatic fashion in the Gr. 2 Auckland Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes. While this was a further endorsement of all that was talked about last week, there was another stakes winner over the weekend who added further affirmation to the proven pattern. Rhythm To Spare collected the 2nd stakes win of his career to date when he won the Listed Kilmore Cup. Rhythm To Spare is by Pins out of the Zabeel mare Stanica. This makes him another example of the successful pattern of combining Zabeel and Silly Season together in a pedigree. When assessing whether a pedigree pattern has performed with better than expected results relative to its opportunity, the many wonderful reports provided by Arion Pedigrees enable us to conduct some very solid research. Using these reports enables us to confirm that combining Zabeel and Silly Season is indeed proving to be a successful pattern. We can see this by looking at the results of when Zabeel is combined with Silly Season and comparing those to the results to date when Zabeel is simply carried anywhere in a pedigree but Silly Season is not carried on the other side. To date, the results from combining Zabeel and Silly Season (and thereby achieving the theoretical pedigree highlights referred to in last week’s Pedigree Pointer section) are running at 7.9% SW/Rnrs. On the other hand, the results for a horse carrying Zabeel anywhere in its pedigree, but without carrying Silly Season on the other side of the pedigree, are running at 4.9% SW/Rnrs. This gives confirmed confidence that there does appear to be a positive affinity between Zabeel and Silly Season. The better examples to date of when these 2 sires have been brought together on opposite sides of the pedigree include Lankan Rupee, Samantha Miss, Preferment, Soriano, Brambles, Pasadena Girl, Unearthly, Messene, Sessions and Sir Moments. So, how do you go about getting a horse that carries this proven affinity? You can either breed or buy one bred as follows: • By Savabeel out of a mare carrying Silly Season • By Ocean Park out of a mare carrying Silly Season By Pins out of a mare carrying Zabeel If you would like to discuss your pursuit of successful pedigree patterns, please feel free to contact me via gareth@ waikatostud.co.nz or 021 433 073 T HE M A IL -W I T H M A R K CHI T T I CKBig week at the stud with two major Australian tour parties commencing their Karaka 2016 Yearling inspections. We look forward to the NZTM Australian Trainers’ Tour and the Mith-O Tour each year and this year once again, we thoroughly enjoyed hosting them. Hats off to Ciaron Maher and Neil Jenkinson, who each put on exceptional claybird shooting displays to receive their respective Shooting Awards. We are particularly proud to show off our yearling draft this year. Where in past year’s our draft has been 100% characterised by proven Gr.1 sires, this year we launch the first crop yearlings by our up-and-coming sires Ocean Park and Rock n Pop. I could tell you how impressive they are but you’re better to come judge for yourself. If you’d like a parade, just drop Gareth a call on 021 433 073. You’ll have noticed we’ve changed our newsletter format this week. Let us know what you think, if you’ve got suggestions, please do fire them through. M.
