Quilters Haven has celebrated it’s 17th birthday! From the
beginning I have sent out a free newsletters and held regular
free patchwork events and quilt shows. Now I have
decided to also reward those who shop regularly with us and
are our loyal customers. Our computer system will record
your accumulative spend and once you reach a target, you
will be given a gift card from me to use on your next visit.
This will equally apply to mail order and online customers.
Certain items such as sewing machines will unfortunately,
not be eligible.
We have a new shop website which will make shopping online
easier. It will also have more information on fabric designers
etc. Our site is completely secure and our mailing lists are not
sold to other companies.
As I write this newsletter we are preparing for our Quilt Walk
around Wickham Market. This show is voluntarily organised
by Marion, Alison and myself, along with several quilt sitters.
It is hard work! And I am full of admiration for all those people who set up shows around the country. Remember when
you visit your local quilt show, to praise their efforts!
In this newsletter you will find only a small portion of what
we have displayed on our website. Even better try to visit us
at the quilting mecca - Quilters Haven!

This past summer has been very busy with quilting holidays and
teaching in many exciting places in the world. The quilting tours
to Bernina in Switzerland and the Sisters outdoor quilt show in
Oregon have been so enormously successful that Arena Travel
are thinking about repeating these trips in 2012. Please contact
them if you are interested.
Our email updates are now sent out regularly, every Friday. We
thought if you knew when to expect them there was less chance
of someone deleting them before you had a chance to read our
exciting weekly news. Do sign up now if you wish to receive

Did you know that Sew Simple Pineapple was voted as one of
the top five best selling quilting books for 2009? This was the
result of a survey of independent quilt shop owners. This year it
has done even better in the USA. Have all the UK quilters tried
out this amazing new technique which is unique to me? For
those of you who have, then take a look at the follow up book
‘Pineapple Plus’. The latest technique was filmed for QNNTV
and Just hands-on-TV.com, both of which should have the clips
on their website in the next few months.

This was my most favourite quilt seen at the last quilt

Historian Barbara Brackman says her new fabric
collection, Arnold’s Attic, celebrates everyone who saves
things, especially her pen pal, Arnold Hegy Savage. Arnold
often finds fabric treasures in his home, an 1840s
Ohio house that’s been in his family for several
generations. “Over the years, he has sent me many
gifts of fabric swatches with a note that says, ‘I found
this in the attic,’” Brackman says. Arnold, taught
by his Aunt Alice, began quilting in the 1930s when
he was confined to bed with rheumatic fever. The
fabrics in this quilt reproduce the latest trends from
1880 to 1920, when his aunt bought fabric for quilts
and dresses.

This book was born when two friends decided to write a unique fabric project book,
inspired by, designed and published in the
North East of England. The book focuses
on the Colliery village at Beamish Open Air
museum. Rebuilt and set in 1913, the village
is a fascinating place and the miners cottages are used as a background to photograph
the projects. Fabrics used are reproductions
from the late Victorian and Edwardian eras,
such as those found in Arnold’s Attic.
This book is interwoven with Florrie’s
memories, Betty’s rhymes and some beautiful imagery. There are 20 projects in this 64

The Art Deco period is renown for its bold stylised shapes and dramatic use of
colour and this is what has inspired this new range called Deco Dreams.
Carlton Ware, which was manufactured in Stoke on Trent, produced some
beautiful Lustre pottery in the 1930s, and this was a particular inspiration for
this range, which is printed with lots of metallic gold, to add that extra exotic
glamour.There are 8 designs in this group, one of which is a panel with 5 different 6” squares. The abstract geometric flowers are typical of the Art Deco

Born in 1834 William Morris was a Victorian in the true sense of the
word as his life spanned all but a few years of Queen Victoria’s reign.
He is particularly well known for his extensive work with textiles and
wallpapers, during the whole decade from the middle of the 1870’s.
He produced at least 32 designs for printed fabrics and 21 designs for
wallpapers. He regarded the home as a spiritual place and believed
that good quality design should be all around us in our everyday
lives.
William Morris designed with a linear exactness, and once said that
design should always be based on memory and imagination. The largest scale print includes irises and birds, stylised in Morris’s own particular way and sits perfectly alongside two small simple leaf designs
and three stylised small florals. A slightly larger flower and leaf, as
well as a design of grapes winding through foliage, compliment this
group to provide a variety of tones and textures.

When is the last time you shoplifted something? Have you stolen a car lately? How about
robbed a bank? All of these things seem like silly questions, and certainly are not the
behaviour of our law-abiding customers! You might be quite surprised to learn that you
may actually have broken the law more often than you think. You might be even more surprised to discover that in the near future you could very well be prosecuted! I’m referring
to copyright infringement, a hot topic among pattern designers, cross-stitch, needlepoint,
and quilt stitchers alike. With the advent of the internet, simple “friend sharing” has been
taken to new heights. No longer is sharing limited to lending a book or pattern to a friend
next door. Today, many “friendly” quilters or quilt groups see sharing as a harmless
activity that hurts no one; however, this practice can very well put a small designer out of
business.
Suppose one quilter takes a class, then shares the pattern and class instructions with her
quilting groups. The group then shares these materials with a friend, who shares it with
another friend, who posts it on the Internet. You can see how the originator of the copyright has essentially been deprived of a significant source of income. And that is against
the law.
Designers make their living selling copyrighted patterns. Large publishing companies, as
well as smaller designers, have begun to actively fight back by pursuing offenders with
legal action. To date this has mostly been in the form of cease-and-desist letters to groups
(including Guilds) and Internet service providers who host web sites where pirated designs
appear.
As a shop owner, I would personally encourage you and any groups you are involved in to
act responsibly. Purchase the required books and patterns needed for classes that you take.
Do not share or publish patterns or instructions in any organisation newsletters without
the express permission of the copyright holder. By following the laws in place, we can keep
the quilting industry healthy and protect the livelihood of the independent designers whose
projects and designs we enjoy.

make a quilt full of different size stars and have perfect points made in a

workshop she will describe different wadding and then show you how to

about piecing a Double Wedding Ring quilt. But rest assured, you will
wind up with essentially the same result. You’ll get there by a very different path that is faster and far less frustrating. Through the magic of
appliqué using fusible interfacing, you’ll still get all those curves,

The Jewel Box is a real gem! Although the quilt calls for up to
twenty-five different fabrics (you can use less), each colour is used
equally, so there is very little waste. Comes with yardage charts and
instructions for Making Piano Keys Border. Book required which

Ideal for presents. Make a series of small books or one large book.

to use various feet attachments for your machine which are not in your
‘wardrobe’. You will get the chance to attach them to your machine and

SAMPLER QUILT - Marion Barnes

Mondays 9.30-12.30pm
This is the quilt that everyone wants to make! Marion will be teaching you lots of different patchwork, you make a block sample of
each method and then it is made into a quilt using the quilt-as-yougo- technique.
There are 14 sessions, usually alternate weeks until 4 April 2011.
We have been teaching this quilt for 17 years at Quilters Haven and
it is still as popular as ever

Christmas. It is an easy design where you should be able to finish the

EASY REVERSE MACHINE APPLIQUE - Teresa Fee: £25

Let Teresa show you the technique with lots of tips and hints. Two
layers of fabric are used and the top fabric is cut and stitched to
reveal the fabric underneath.You can use a pattern or draw your own.

For those who only like to quilt small items and yet want a largish
quilt. You will work with wadding and fabric squares to stitch the
blocks and then sew the blocks together with a lovely raggy edge

The emphasis in this workshop will be on taking the design source
from ancient sculpture. You will learn how to turn sculpture into
stitch with this intruiging technique. Add a new dimension to your
quilted projects with this intriguing technique that introduces you to
amazing sculptural effects which includes ‘painless’ painting, printing
and stencilling to enhance your work. Full instruction will be given

Fold and twist up some fandangos (permision given by Jennie Rayment) and then learn how Marion makes them into

machine, machine tension, inserting zips, neatening seams and understanding pattern directions. Students on this course have found

An exciting new course for those who work during the week.
There will be six sessions, a Saturday once a month, from October
to March. You should have some experience of either a beginners
class or a workshop.The quilt will have a unique setting composed
of three different block sizes with some rectangular blocks and
strips. The quilt can be made up and quilted in small sections and/
or strips.Numerous techniques will be covered including:- Piecing,
foundation, folded, applique, curved and quilting. There will be 20
blocks to make to cover the various techniques

work on their own projects in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
A tutor is available for advice from 10am - 12.00pm or all evening.

Block of the Month
Quilt
Join our Paris in the Fall Block of the Month programme, an
easy way to pay and stitch in instalments! This quilt features the
new French General’s Maison de Garance collection by Moda
Fabrics. The finished size is 66" x 86".
Paris in the Fall BOM includes the fabrics and pattern needed
to complete the quilt top and binding.
Two fabric blocks will be sent out each month from November
2010 to April 2011. Sashing and border fabrics are included.
Price is £23.00 per month for six months. Total cost £138.00
U.K shipping is £2.00 per month. The deposit is £23.00, which
is non-returnable. The last month is covered by the deposit, so
