and workshops available to your school though the Arts Education Matching Grant Program. If you have any questions, please call the
Arts Council at 910-323-1776.
how to use this booklet
Artists in Schools is a matching grant program for artist residencies, assembly performances or workshops. Artists available for
this program are listed in this booklet.
• Decide on the scope of project you are interested in: A five day (or longer) artist residency?
An assembly performance or workshop?
•
Read “The Way To Care For Your Visiting Artist” on page 7.
•
Read through the artists listed. The Arts Council has videos, curriculum and references on file. These materials may be
valuable when trying to select an artist. You may make an appointment to review these materials at any time.
•
Select the artist and program. Fill out the grant application for your project and send it in!
•
A grants panel will meet to discuss applications and distribute grant funds.
•
New Policy: After you have been notified of your grant award, the Artist(s) will work with the school to schedule
performance/residency/workshop dates.

Grant Funding: The Arts Council and the selected school each provide 50% of the artist’s fee (Example: Artist’s Fee = $2500, Arts

school. (see New Policy)

The Way to Care for Your Visiting Artist
1.
Select your artists wisely. Use the Arts Council’s AIS Directory as your guide. For more details, call the
Arts Council at 323-1776 to discuss which artists would be best for your school’s cultural arts program.
2.
Make sure you understand everything before you sign the contract between the Arts Council and the
school. Please call the Arts Council for any assistance you may need.
3.
The artists will be contacting the schools to schedule dates/ times for their visits to the schools. They will
contact the principal and/or the designated school liason to the Arts Council. All scheduled visits and/or
changes to the schedules must be reported to the Arts Council by the artists and the schools.
4.
Pay the Arts Council on time as specified in the contract. Just like the rest of us, artists expect and need
their checks on time. You are requesting a Matching Grant, so the schools pay the Arts Council and the
Arts Council pays the artists.
5.
For performances, workshops and residencies, certified teachers must be in attendance with the
students. The artists are there to enhance learning, not to handle discipline and other normal classroom
details. There should be one (1) certified teacher per 25-30 students present at all times.
6.
Have water, juice or soft drinks available before, during or after the programs. Just ask the artists their
preference – it will be appreciated.
7.
Find out the technical requirements – they may be minimal, but very important to the artists and to the
audiences.
8.
Decide who will briefly introduce the artist to the audience. This person should also acknowledge
the Arts Council and the matching grant as stated in the contract. This person should be available to
supervise the program and assist the artist if necessary.
9.
Artists love publicity – and it is always good PR for the schools to inform their parents and the public
about the “great things” happening in the schools. So, call the local newspaper, put the events in your
school newsletter and get the word out as much as possible.
10.
Complete the required Evaluation Report Forms carefully and on time. The quality of your report will
affect your chances of receiving funds from the Arts Council in the future.
11.
Finally, plan your programs with care, and care for your artists.

Airborne & Special Operations Museum
ABOUT THE MUSEUM:
Opened on August 16, 2000, the sixtieth anniversary of the first
parachute jump by US Army soldiers, the Airborne & Special
Operations Museum is a 59,000 square foot facility offering
adults and children a fascinating multimedia experience covering
more than sixty years of exciting history. The museum is the
culmination of more than fifteen years of discussion, planning
and fund-raising, an effort involving the US Army, the State of
North Carolina, the City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County and
countless private citizens.
FACILITIES:
The exhibit galleries include more than 25,000 square feet of historical exhibits, audiovisual presentations, full-scale
dioramas, aircraft, vehicles, weapons, and equipment, all telling the story of the US Army’s paratroopers, glider men and
special operations soldiers from 1940 to the present time. Of special note are the:
World War II C-47 aircraft
World War II CG-4A Glider
Vietnam era UH-1 helicopter
Sheridan Airborne Tank
Army special operations exhibits, 1980 – present
The Yarborough-Bank Theater and Motion Simulator enlighten visitors about the excitement and fear experienced
by airborne and special operations soldiers every day. The drama becomes real for the museum visitor through state of
the art technology. The 225-seat Yarborough-Bank theater presents an entertaining and enlightening “larger than life”
14-minute film, “Descending From The Clouds” illustrating the
early origins of airborne operations as well as current applications.
The 4-minute motion simulator experience provides visitors the
virtual experience of joining in with these extraordinary soldiers
as they ski, parachute, and fly over rooftops in exciting adventures.
ADMISSION TO THE MUSEUM IS FREE, and school groups
get special discounts on the tickets to see the film, and to ride the
simulator, when tours are booked 2 weeks in advance. The film is
free for everyone in the school group, and tickets for the simulator
will be reduced from $5, which the general public pays, to $4.50.

Cape Fear Studios
cultural
facility
Cape Fear Studios was established in 1989 and is the one and only visual arts
cooperative in Fayetteville. We have been in the same location on Maxwell Street
since our beginning and pride ourselves in growing each year. Local artists pay
a yearly membership fee and volunteer their own time to help, in union with the
Cumberland County Arts Council and generous donors, in the operations of the
Studio.
In the gallery and retail area we show works of pottery, sculpture, photography,
painting, glassworks, jewelry, and various other mediums. These are unique
pieces created by over 40 member artists and rotated on a monthly basis. We are
also proud to feature a new exhibit each month in the main gallery at the front of
the Studio. Featured artists include Cape Fear Studios members, local artists, and
even artists known on a national level. Each new exhibit opens in conjunction
with downtown’s 4th Friday, a monthly gallery crawl featuring art, street vendors,
and specials at many downtown establishments.
Field Trips:
Guided tours are available. Advance reservations are required to
insure that there will be artists present who will demonstrate for the
students. Small groups are preferred but since we are next door to
the Transportation Museum and one block from The Arts Council
arrangements can usually be made to divide the larger groups.
Community Service:
Senior high school students can receive community service hours in
a variety of capacities including graphic design, electronic media, as
well as gallery assistance.

GUIDED TOURS:
Available Tuesday through Friday beginning at 10 a.m.
MUSEUM EXHIBITS:
Students receive a tour of the museum covering the history
of southern North Carolina in a chronological time line from
American Indians to the turn of the 20th century. This is a
great tour that complements North Carolina history taught in
4th and 8th grades.
1897 POE HOUSE:
Built in 1897 by the Poe family, students will learn about life in
the early 1900s. One hundred years ago many technological changes occurred just as technological advances in our time
have changed the way we live. A tour through the Poe House will highlight the comparisons of life now and then.
Choose to tour one or both facilities when you call to make your reservation. Make reservations at least two weeks in
advance. Through a generous grant from Youth Growth Stock Trust, the museum will pay for the bus mileage, bus driver,
and one substitute teacher so that your field trip is free of cost to your school and your students. To take advantage of this

apprenticed as a mime to Tom’s partner in Mad Mountain
Mime, C.W. Metcalf. After a few years, they then went on
their merry ways: Tom to perform in the duo Dr. Tom
& Seus, and Jef to help create and perform with North
Carolina’s Touch Mime Theater. After performing solo for
many years, in 2009 they got excited about working together,
so here they are!
ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES:
Tom & Jef: New Mime Theater is a mime performance
geared for elementary and middle school students. The
essential question for this performance is, “Using our bodies,
how do we communicate?” Incorporating mime, masks
and audience participation (including students and faculty
members on stage in several of their pieces), they celebrate
the world of non-verbal communication. The mime pieces
themselves have timeless themes such as: “celebrate people
who happen to be different,” and “play fair.” If sponsors so
desire, they end their performance with a Q&A session with
the students in the audience.

Mad River Theater Works

Mad River Theater works is an acclaimed touring ensemble that creates vibrant
and evocative plays with music for young audiences based on American
History and folklore. Founded in 1978 by playwright Jeff Hooper, Mad River
presents original productions that explore traditional stories and themes in a
unique, innovative style. With over 25 years of touring experience, the company
has earned an international reputation for authentic presentations that bring
little-known characters and aspects of American culture to the stage.
ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES:
Wings of Courage (grades 3-6) is an original play with music based on the life
of Eugene Bullard, the first African-American combat pilot and adventurer. The
color of Bullard’s skin prevented him from taking his place alongside the other
American heroes of his day. But that didn’t stop him. He went on to fame as a
bandleader in Paris in the 1920s. Using storytelling, music, and drama, Wings
of Courage shows how Bullard’s determination and perseverance helped him to
overcome discrimination throughout his remarkable life. It is an uplifting tale
of vision and hope that dserves to be known by every American. Curriculum:
History, Character Education, Music.
John Henry (grades K-6) is a well-known figure of American lore. John Henry’s incredible size and strength became
legendary as he worked laying track for the railroads that crisscrossed the countryside in the late 19th century. No one
could match his skill or his endurance until the invention of the steam-powered driver. We remember John Henry for his
famous contest with this newfangled machine. John Henry uses storytelling, drama and music to bring the story of an
American legend to life. It is a tale that speaks to young and old alike and carries a strong contemporary parallel about the
importance of our humanity in the face of changing technology. Curriculum: History, Character Education, Music.

guide young people in making plays including identifying and researching topics, creating dialogue and performance
techniques.

with professional plays for children for over 30
years. The actors’ unique blend of humor and superb
characterizations combine beautifully with cleverly
designed props, set pieces and costumes to create a
memorable theatre experience for both children and
adults. Their plays are often drawn from works of
children’s literature, and they cultivate and inspire a joy
in reading. An assistant principal in Weddington, NC

still has a chance to win the hand of the handsome Prince. With roots in the humorous, physical acting style of Italian
Comdia dell’arte, this is a lighthearted treat for all age levels.
Rapunzel
This production stays true to the mystery and enchantment of the original Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale. Theo and Helga
long for a child of their own, as does Gothal, the powerful witch who lives next door. When Gothal catches Theo stealing
from her walled garden, she forces him to give her his first born daughter, who she names Repunzel. Imprisoned in a
tower, Repunzel spends her lonely days longing for companionship- until she meets the charming Prince Derrick. The

homemade brass instruments. In Brass Can Do Anything, it is highly encouraged to have a toe-tapping, finger-snapping,
hand-clapping good time! Curriculum connectors: History/Social Studies, Music, Sciences and Math.

As an educator, Joe’s clinics, workshops and school presentations on music participation
have captivated audiences around the country. He’s worked with students from
preschool to adult in a variety of settings. He completed his first artists residency at
California State University-Chico to rave reviews and has expanded his educational
outreach to museums and music camps ranging from fiddle to percussion to song
school. According to Joe, “music is imagination, expression, therapy and living in the
creative spirit.”
ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES:
Joe presents rhythm as the most significant thing in music. Through rhythmic phrasing
you can say powerful things with just one pitch or chord. He presents the concept,
components and the importance of rhythm as a life force, both visually and aurally.
He introduces rhythm to students as a way of measuring time and space and then
demonstrates how it can be perceived musically. From bouncing basketballs to playing
found objects such as cans, bottles, books and school desks...walking and skipping to
vocal and body percussion, Joe discusses and demonstrates the power of rhythm and
how it is expressed through movement to communicate, as a language, information and
artistic expression through mediums such as painting, music and dance.
Demonstrating his own love of music as the catalyst, Joe shows students how the process of finding artistic passion can
motivationally spark and drive them in any endeavor towards enrichment, empowerment and excellence. A dynamic and
creative presentation of 1) concepts, 2) demonstrations and 3) hands-on opportunities, is given amidst a broad setting of
musical instruments from all over the world and objects from our everyday life.

Billy Stevens
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
For over 20 years, Billy Stevens has toured the world as a “Modern-Day One-Man
Band,” performing in over 60 countries and 30 North Carolina counties. With his
unique array of keyboards, harmonicas, drum machines and high-tech sound gear,
Billy recreates the sound of five musicians (keyboards, bass, blues harp, drums,
vocals) playing a wide variety of music from blues to rock to reggae. But, Billy does
more that just entertain. His commentary on the evolution of American popular
music identifies crucial interactions between African-American and EuropeanAmerican musicians. While placing each genre in its proper historic context,
Billy shares an empowering message of pride in the cultural contributions of all
Americans, encouraging young people to continue the same process of innovation
through emulation.
ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES:
Billy Stevens’ lecture/performances provide a fascinating journey through American
musical history, illustrated with performed examples of each representative genre.
His widely acclaimed program, The History of the Blues: the Roots of Rock ‘n Roll
traces the influence of seminal African-American styles and peformers, including
native North Carolinians, on pop music trends from the 1940s to the 1970s. This
phenomenon is further explored in his program, Sincere Forms of Flattery: Blacks, Whites and American Popular Music.
Beginning with the musicians who inspired his own musical journey, Billy identifies the pattern of imitation that shapes
popular culture. From Stephen Foster to the Beatles and Elvis to Eminem, Billy illustrates the role of emulation in the
creative process, offering potent examples of cross-cultural fusion and the benefits of diversity. Both programs are wellsuited to middle and high school students but can be tailored to younger audiences as well.
Grade Level/Maximums:
3-12, teachers/staff/parents, unlimited students, 60 minutes, 2 /day
Technical Requirements:
Electrical outlet
Fee:
$550 /1; $880 /2 same school, same day
WORKSHOPS/RESIDENCIES:
Billy Stevens offers a series of workshop lectures designed to stand alone or follow up a performance given earlier in the
day. Using archival recordings, Billy describes the historic interactions between African and European-Americans that
shaped the evolution of our popular music. Exposure to these original sound documents brings to life Billy’s assertion
that America is a “mutual emulation society,” proving the point not only with his own music but through a century of
popular recordings. Workshop titles include Discovering Elvis: Tracing Traditions to the Roots of the King, Samson &
Delilah: From Pulpits to Pop Stars and The Roots of Carolina Blues. Billy is a fully funded lecturer for NC Humanities
Road Scholar Program (see www.nchumanities.org for more details). A 5 day residency can be designed to fit the need of
