Tormead Honours Servicemen and Servicewomen
Autumn Term Newsletter 2014 An Independent Day School for Girls 4-18 years Tormead Honours Servicemen and Servicewomen Tormead was joined at this year’s Remembrance Day Assembly by Major Olivia Madders and Major Barnabas Gibson. Major Madders, who serves with the Royal Army Medical Corps, has been stationed three times in Iraq as part of the coalition forces and also completed a tour in Afghanistan. She is currently Officer Commanding 36 Sqn, 4 Armoured Medical Regiment. Major Barnabas Gibson also serves with the Royal Army Medical Corps, and has seen active service three times in Afghanistan, working in a hospital in Camp Bastion and in Brigade HQ in Lashkar Gah. To commentate the Centenary of the First World War, Year 11 Tormead Historians have researched men from our local area who gave their lives during the Great War and WW2. The girls focused on the military service and livelihoods of the men from Abinger Common who died in the Great War. Poignantly, our young Historians had visited some of their graves and memorials on a school trip to the Battlefields last May. Using the information gleaned from their investigations, the girls created a heart-felt display of their findings. The Officers led prayers and readings, while the orchestra played Elgar's Enigma Variations. Nicola Hoy played the Last Post and the Head Girl, Faye Rodgers - accompanied by the two Junior School Head Girls, Abi Newboult and Charlie Wreford-Doree - lit the candles of Remembrance. Five girls attended the Remembrance service at St James' Church, Abinger, and discussed their research with Rev Anthony Berry and parishioners. Alice Cartwright said, "It was really moving to speak to all the people at the service and hear some of their personal stories." After the Assembly the girls planted WW1 Northlew Poppy Seeds Left to right: Izzie Edwards, Sophie Moss, Daniela Bologna, Rev Anthony Berry, Hannah Harms, Alice Cartwright MyDaughter is a website for parents providing a valuable source of up-to-date information, expert opinion and useful advice on all aspects of educating and raising happy, fulfilled girls. School News Tormead Charities 2014-2015 In this centenary year, it is no wonder that our main focus has been The Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, for which we raised over £400.00 through the wearing of poppies and through collections during our main school production: ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’. There have been plenty of other events taking place, however, with our annual shoebox donation making a striking display in the foyer, and numerous form events ranging from Christmas jumper days and spooky Halloween cake sales, to a street party in the Village. The Wings of Hope teams have been selected and have organised events various, including a staff versus pupils karaoke competition and a netball match against the RGS rugby team! Furthermore, a number of girls have made impressive individual commitments, such as Imaan Irfan’s creation of a ‘Happy’ video involving teachers and pupils; Ottilie Young’s organisation of a food bank collection; Sophie Newboult’s running of a prize stall at the Cracker Fair; or Laila Pell’s sponsorship for cutting off 12 inches of her hair! School News To the Memory of the Fallen: ‘Pack Up Your Troubles!’ To commemorate the centenary of the start of WW1, the Drama department and Glee Club put on a tremendous joint production which combined musical theatre and performance. The audience was transported back in time to a traditional Edwardian Music Hall, complete with song, slap stick comedy and magicians. ‘Pack Up Your Troubles’ told the story of how the Music Hall was one of the dominant forms of entertainment of the early 20th century, but was also used for propaganda and recruitment. This was vividly demonstrated by the girls’ dramatic adaptation of ‘Oh What a Lovely War’. The start of the war was portrayed with optimism, but as the scene moved to the battlefields and the number of wounded and dying soldiers increased, a multimedia scoreboard depicted this grim reality of war, displaying the growing number of lives lost, contrasted with the strikingly paltry number of “yards gained”. After the interval, Glee Club members used musical theatre to conclude the evening’s entertainment with a combination of contemporary and traditional war anthems. continued overleaf... School News ...‘Pack Up Your Troubles!’ (continued) Photos © www.catchlight35.com Sports News Netball News In October, the U14As rewrote the netball history record book and beat Guildford High School 17-9. The girls showed all the skill and team spirit they had displayed at Condover. In October, the U15A and U16A netball teams played in the County Tournament at Guildford High School. The U16s won five out of five matches and qualified for the County Finals. All girls played magnificently especially the defenders Hannah Harms and Nicole Chapman-Hatchett. The U15s won two out of five games and missed out by one goal to qualify, which was their best result at this tournament, so well done to all involved! U12 Hockey Tour In November, the U12A and B squads went to York on a two-day hockey tour. They stopped off on route to play Bedford Girls School. These proved to be challenging matches but the girls enjoyed the experience of playing outside Surrey and the A’s Player of the Match was Giorgia Thornycroft and and the B’s Player of the Match was Abigail Jarvis. Later that day, the touring girls played Queen Margaret's School, York. The As won 2-0, with Player of the Match Emma Corney, and the Bs won 1-0, with Player of the Match awarded to Natascha Crammond. After a spooky ghost walk around the Shambles of York and a good night's rest, the girls played The Mount School the following morning. The As won 6-0 and the Bs drew, with Player of the Match for the B team being awarded to Olivia Perry. In torrential rain, the U12As drew against Fettes, and Player of the Match was given to Madeleine Morgan, whilst the Bs narrowly lost, with Player of the Match Isobel Gleason. Due to adverse weather conditions, the last match against St Olave's had to be abandoned but fun and lots of sweets were had by all! In November, the U14, U16 and U18 squads competed in the National Netball Finals at Epsom College. The U14 and U16 played well and the U18 came 4th. Gymnastics In November, the senior Tormead gymnasts had a friendly competition against Haberdashers’ Aske’s School at home. The day was a great success and the best start to the gymnastics competition ever! The U13s, U15s and Senior teams all won. A great preparation for next term. During December all the gymnasts from Reception to Sixth Form took part in our annual Christmas display. Despite a nasty bug over 130 gymnasts took part on the night. It was fantastic to see the development of skills as the girls rise through the school. But more importantly the obvious care and support the senior school gymnasts give to our junior girls. Well done to our junior Disney gymnasts and our senior show girls. U13 and U14 Condover Hall Tournament In September, the U13 and U14 netball A teams participated in the GSA tournament at Condover Hall. The U13s played six matches on the Saturday, beating Notting Hill, Haberdasher’s and Dame Allan’s, and drawing with Bolton School. The team came 3rd in their group and played in the Cup section of the tournament on the Sunday. Here the team beat Tudor Hall and Bolton Girls to get into the semi-final but were unlucky to lose to Godolphin and Latymer School in extra time, but finished 3rd overall. Sports News Hockey News In November, a selection of Senior Hockey girls played in the U18 Indoor County Hockey Tournament at Epsom College. They lost their first two games against Alleyn’s and Cranleigh but were the only team to score against Cranleigh. Tormead drew against the City of London Freeman’s School and won 4-1 against Lingfield. It was a great tournament and this being their first indoor hockey experience - to come joint third overall was a great result. Junior Gym News: GISGA Gold Having qualified back in October to compete at the GISGA National Gymnastics Competition, our U9's travelled to Birmingham to represent Tormead at the end of November. The girls were warming up at 8.00a.m, competing at 9.00a.m, and by 7:45p.m., were awarded their welldeserved trophy. Without doubt, the depth of talent ensured we secured Gold: Tormead’s excellent reputation for home grown talent continues to thrive! Emily joined the Junior School last year, and in the past 12 months she has gone from being a novice to the National U9 GISGA champion. Emily led the team by example. The girls shone throughout the day, displaying courage, finesse and determination to secure victory. The triumphant team consisted of Team Captain Emily Travers, Isobel Land, Lilly Hunter, Lilia Stredwick and Liberty Smith. Credit must also go to our talented reserves, who fought hard but missed out on the final selection: Cassia Cortes, Annabelle Davey, Amber Wild and Katie Stott. Congratulations to all of the girls, the reserve team, and of course the coaches. Well done! The 1st XI played in the King’s College School Wimbledon hockey tournament. In the Team Group Matches, Tormead drew against Prior’s Field, Latymer Upper School and Tiffin Girls School, and spectacularly beat the hosts Kingston College School Wimbledon in the play-offs to finish an amazing 3rd place. Swimming In November, Year 7 swimmers competed against St Catherine’s. The overall score was 241-179 to St Catherine’s, but special congratulations to the A team who won their section 47-45. In December, all Year 7 to Senior swimmers competed against Guildford High School. Special congratulations to Year 8 and Year 9, who each only lost their section by 5 points.
