Explore your love for learning in more than 60 non-credit courses, all designed to bring you both education and enjoyment. Courses are interactive and affordable and taught during the day and evening hours. Class size is limited in order to encourage interaction with the instructor and other learners. A new feature this term is the Live Well series. Under the title of Live Well are three course offerings that will enhance your lifestyle through education and cover a variety of subject matters. WXII12 News Weather Watchers (LW 101) (Kennedy) Get started, create an outline and press on through writing obstacles. For both beginners and those with work-in-progress. Learn how WXII 12 News Meteorologist Michelle Kennedy forecasts the weather. She’ll provide you with basic weather knowledge, and share tips on severe weather analysis. Students will have the opportunity to analyze weather data to design a forecast. Learn how understanding the weather can improve your lifestyle and increase your knowledge of weather. Tuesdays, October 29 – November 19 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. ($55) Seeing With a Different “I”: First-Person Narratives (Mephan) Explore the narrative possibilities of writing fiction using the first-person point of view, or “I.” No class Nov. 26. Thursdays, November 12 – December 3 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. ($55) Looking Back and Forward – Book Club (LW 101) (Creasy) Join a short-term book club, make new book friends and explore the story. The group will start by reading something great from the past, A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, then the contemporary classic, The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. Finally the group will predict and read a book that is bound to become a classic! This three-session course is spread out over three-week intervals during October and November to allow plenty of time to read. Thursdays, October 1, October 22 and November 5 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. ($30) Ask the Dietician: Nutrition Throughout the Life Cycle (LW 101) (Norris) Come spend two evenings with an experienced professional in the field of nutrition. The course will focus on how to adjust the diet to make those changes safely and effectively. Find out which supplements have been most researched and learn what to look for in a dietary supplement, as well as learn how to avoid potential medication/food interactions. A question and answer period is scheduled for each session. Wednesdays, September 16 – September 30 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. ($45) Mastering Office 2007: Word, Excel and Power Point (Thetford) Each topic offers a beginner and advancedlevel of instruction; each course covers two evenings so you may take the entire series of six courses between September and November. Learn to evaluate wines as you taste the major grape varieties from around the world. The final class takes place at a local vineyard. Participants must be 21. Art and Design Courses The Salem College Wine Dinner at Zevely House (Heye) Wednesdays, September 16 – September 30 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. ($65) Join us as we put into practice what our wine classes have been offering. Our “Wine Guy” has worked with Zevely House to select wines to match a full dinner offering. Course fee includes the cost of dinner and beverages, including wine. This course makes a great gift! Wines of the New World (Heye) Wednesday, November 18 Begins 6:30 p.m. ($85) Explore the new world of wine from Australia, New Zealand, South America, South Africa and the United States as you leisurely sample and discuss their like-named grapes with unique tastes from each region. Participants must be 21. Tuesdays, October 20 – November 3 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. ($70) Wine and Food Pairings (Heye) Be at ease when selecting wines to complement casual hors d’oeuvres as well as fine meals. Become confident in your wine selections at every holiday event you attend or host. Participants must be 21. Mondays, November 9 – 23 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. ($70) Focus on Alsace and the Piedmont of Italy (Heye) These two regions produce unique wines using grape varieties that set the standards when planted elsewhere. Explore the geography which makes these wines superior, the history and traditions that have brought about this uniqueness and the personalities that craft the wines. Tastings of these wines will affirm their quality. Due to the quality of the wines the class will be limited to 14. Participants must be 21. Mondays, November 30 – December 7 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. ($85) Drawing Caricatures: The Art of Cartooning (Verano) Learn the fine line between reality and fiction to capture a likeness in caricature. Use photos of favorite sports figures, politicians, celebrities and family members for inspiration. Supplies: drawing pad, pencils and eraser. The course is geared for youth. No class Oct. 12. Mondays, September 14 – October 26 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. ($125) Drawing and Painting Trees (Verano) The secret to drawing and painting believable trees is understanding tree structure. You will compile a file and sketchbook of various tree species for reference material to utilize in landscape painting. Supplies: drawing pad, pencils, paints of choice with canvas. No class Oct. 13 or Oct. 14. Option 1: Tuesdays, September 15 – October 27 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. ($130) Option 2: Wednesdays, September 16 – October 28 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. ($130) Drawing the Garden Statuary (Verano) Bunnies, gnomes, birds, angels and gargoyles adorn and decorate our gardens. These charming creations protect our property, guard our homes and loved ones and delight the observer. Becoming proficient in drawing garden statuary is a great way to brush up on your drawing skills. Supplies: Drawing pad, pencils and photo reference. Mondays, November 2 – December 7 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. ($130) Time to Paint in Miniatures (Verano) Learn techniques in color mixing and paint application on a variety of surfaces including illustration board and basswood panels. You will work from a variety of subjects, painting two small works of art each session. Smooth vellum board panels and smooth watercolor paper are required, as well as paints/brushes. No class Nov. 25. Option 1: Tuesdays, November 3 – December 8 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. ($130) Option 2: Wednesdays, November 4 – December 9 12:30 – 3:00 p.m. ($130) Health, Safety and Fitness Courses Ballroom Dancing (Econ) Our local “Dancing with the Stars” is about to begin! This is your chance to learn the steps to the Foxtrot, the Waltz, the Tango and even the Cha-Cha! Come enjoy not only the social outlet but also the exercise and meet new people. Dance partners are not required. Thursdays, September 3 – October 8 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. ($65; bring a friend, any two registrations - fee is $120) Belly Dancing (Dickinson) Fall Fairways (Nixon) This course emphasizes the fundamentals of the game of golf. Topics include proper grip, stance and alignment; swings for the short and long game; putting; and the rules and etiquette of golf. A full-swing video analysis will also be done. The lessons will be taught at a local golf course. Wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes or golf shoes. No class Oct. 12. Mondays, September 14 – October 19 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. ($80) This ancient art form celebrates movement, strengthens the body and improves flexibility and posture. Each session begins with a series of warm-up stretches and then several belly dancing steps are taught to Arabic music. You will also enjoy a yoga-based cool-down session. Wear yoga or exercise pants and a close-fitting exercise top. Ballet shoes, socks or bare feet are acceptable; and bring a yoga mat. Shag Lessons - Beginner/ Intermediate Dancer (Holcomb) Option 1: Tuesdays, September 8 – October 6 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. ($65; bring a friend or register for both sessions, any two registrations- fee is $120) Option 2: Tuesdays, October 20 – November 17 5:30 – 6:45 p.m. ($65; Bring a friend or register for both sessions, any two registrations- fee is $120) Mondays, September 14 – November 2 6:00 – 7:00 P.M. ($55; bring a friend, any two registrations - fee is $100) Learn basic steps and refresh the steps if you already have experience. Each session will build on what was taught the week before. Shag dancing is a great form of exercise for all ages and is an enjoyable form of entertainment. A partner is not required. No class Sept. 28 and Oct. 12. Line Dancing (Holcomb) The exercise is there, you just need to register and show up! No partner required! Learn basic steps of line dancing such as circle, contra and waltz. Mondays, September 14 – November 2 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. ($55; bring a friend, any two registrations - fee is $100) Hiking the Piedmont (Callahan) Come enjoy two fall afternoons in the beautiful Piedmont area! You will hike Hanging Rock and Pilot Mountain, each an estimated two hours plus travel. Meet at Salem and travel to the sites; hikers of all ages are invited. Additional instructions available upon registration. (Rain dates: Sunday, October 25 and Saturday, November 14.) Hanging Rock: Sunday, October 4 Pilot Mountain: Saturday, October 24 1:45 – 5:30 p.m., estimated time includes travel ($30; bring a friend, any two registrations - fee is $50) Getting Back in the Saddle (Lovell) Experience the wonders of riding horses in an indoor arena under the direction of university-educated instructors. The classes will be held at Cash Lovell Stables & Riding Academy. Learn the basics of handling a horse and to mount/dismount, walk, trot, post and general riding skills. Riding experience is not required; classes are open to horse lovers of all ages. No class Oct. 13. Tuesdays, October 6 – November 10 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. ($165) Course Instructors Linda Carter Brinson has written for more than 40 years for the Winston-Salem Journal, The Sentinel, The Sun and the Wake Forest University alumni magazine. She serves on the board of directors, Salem College Center for Women Writers. Jane Goins holds a bachelor’s in Spanish and social studies from Appalachian State University and is one of the top instructors in contract and duplicate bridge in this area. She holds 18 regional titles in duplicate bridge, with a total of 2750 master points. Mike Britt holds degrees in mathematics and counseling; is principal/executive director for the Children’s Center for the Physically Disabled; and has been a visiting instructor for Courses for Community since 1978. Elizabeth Goliber is a local businesswoman and demonstrator for Stampin’ Up. She enjoys numerous crafts with her main focus being scrapbooking. She teaches basic techniques on how to complete a scrapbook and preserve memories for years to come. Jay Callahan is the Sports Information Director and Soccer Coach for Salem College. Jay holds degrees from West Virginia University and Salem College. Ava Lewandowski of ReDesigns by Ava is a local redesign specialist, affiliated with the Interior Redesign Industry Specialist and the Society of Decorating Professionals. She is dedicated to helping people create a beautiful home – one room at a time. Betti Pettinati-Longinotti holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and an MA from the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Doug Pyron is a local distributor of BBQ rubs, sauces and seasonings and is a leader in the field of grilling. Awards include the N.C. State Governors trophy in a BBQ cook-off. He works with Casual Furniture World in teaching outdoor cookery. Chrisann Parr Ricciardi has presented the news from the first Gulf War to Presidential elections and major sporting events. She has also hosted several radio talk programs and emceed hundreds of public events. Currently she freelances as a television producer and voiceover artist. Michelle Thetford has been a certified Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) since 2004. She conducts group and individual trainings on the entire Office suite of programs. Vickie Verano holds a B.A. from Marshall University and has been with the Salem CfC program as an art instructor since 1997. She initiated a children’s art program, an afterschool program and “Summer in Old Salem.” She teaches private art lessons to children and conducts adult tutorials.
