ACTIVITY 4 INSTRUCTIONS: Absolutely Abstract Art •JOY
ACTIVITY 4 INSTRUCTIONS:
Absolutely Abstract Art
Let kids know that abstract art is sometimes called Abstract Expressionism. This type of art doesn’t
always have a specific subject. It has lines, colors, and shapes—the artists who create it are usually
trying to express one or more emotions.
Encourage kids to examine the images presented on the activity sheet. What emotions do they see?
You may also opt to have them look up some of the artists mentioned in the activity, including Pollock,
Kandinsky, Picasso, and Miro, with your guidance.
Finally, encourage them to create their own abstract art representing
one or more of the following emotions:
•JOY
•SADNESS
•ANGER
•DISGUST
•FEAR
Kids will have fun creating abstract art with different colors, textures, types of paper and materials, etc.
You may encourage them to paint, draw, color, or perhaps create something with everyday objects
(e.g., newspaper, plastic bottles, recycled paper, etc.).
Share kids’ absolutely abstract art on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.

ACTIVITY 4 Absolutely Abstract Art
(Ideal for Kids in Grades 4–8)
Look at the abstract art below. Then, think about the emotions the pictures might express.
In the style of Pablo Picasso
In the style of Jackson Pollock
It’s fun to express emotions with art! Consider looking online to see abstract art by famous
artists such as Alexander Calder, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Jackson Pollock, and Pablo Picasso—
for instance, check out “Figure au bord de la mer, 1929.” Think about the emotions the art seem to
express. Then, pick an emotion and create a picture, painting, collage, sculpture, or similar to show
how the emotion feels to you! Choose one of these:
•JOY
•SADNESS
•ANGER
•DISGUST
•FEAR
There’s no right or wrong way to do it, so have fun!
