The Heathfield High School Governing Council
AGM was held on Tuesday 15 March. I was able
to share the successes and challenges of 2015
as well as our future directions through the
Annual Report.
I would like to thank Rick Barns the 2015 Governing
Council Chair and members of the 2015 Governing
Council for their hard work, enthusiasm and
commitment to Heathfield High School. The Heathfield
High School Governing Council meets on Tuesday
evenings week 3 and 7 of each term at 7:00pm in
Piltarilla and welcomes parents at meetings to see and
hear what we do on your behalf.
This year not all vacancies were filled at the AGM and
although we have a very committed and supportive
group there are 5 positions that still remain available.
If you are interested in nominating for one of these
positions or would like to find out more regarding
what the role involves, please either contact me or
attend the next meeting on Tuesday, 17th May. I would
like to thank the 2016 Governing Council in advance
for the time and commitment they are making to the
school community this year.

Showcase Evening
Sports Day
A perfect warm evening greeted visitors to our Showcase
Evening on Tuesday 22nd March. It was great to see so many
prospective students and parents showing such an interest in
Heathfield High School. Through self-guided tours they were
able to see an impressive range of interactive displays that
showcased curriculum and learning as well as extra-curricular
programs.
Despite a massive downpour the night before Sports Day it was
a resounding success and one of the highlights of this term. We
were fortunate with the weather on the day and the work that
had been undertaken to improve the oval drainage and surface
meant the overnight rain and early showers did not stop us
running all events. Students dressed in team colours with some
of the most imaginative and outrageous outfits worn this year.
The picnic race meeting format catered for all students with
the introduction of a number of new fun and innovative events
along with the traditional track and field events. The S4S BBQ
catered well for students along with the ice cream from ‘Iced
Dreams’ run by the Small Business Enterprise class. It was a
fun day regardless of whether students competed in events,
cheered their team on or just enjoyed hanging out with friends.
This was one of our most attended Showcase Evenings with
learning areas receiving many positive comments for the
huge effort they had put into showcasing the learning within
their area. Visitors to the school were also able to explore our
outstanding facilities including the newly developed Music
Suite, Fitness and Wellbeing Centre and Outdoor Education
Shed. A Formal Presentation took place in our School Hall
providing an opportunity for me to share information about
the school and its directions for the future. Our School
Captains, Serenna Williams and Henry Phillips along with
Middle Years students; Katherine Childs, Taylor Davis, Alexander
Kozlow and Nicholas Possingham spoke confidently to the
audience of visiting families about their positive experiences
of starting at Heathfield, involvement in student leadership
and their learning. Many other students made a commitment
to participate in a range of showcase events and displays
as part of the evening’s program and their efforts were
really appreciated.
I will always encourage attendance at events such as swimming
carnivals and sports days as they provide opportunities for our
young people to socialise and be with their friends in a positive
and fun atmosphere. It is disappointing when students are
given permission to miss out on the opportunity to be a part
of a positive and enjoyable whole of school event regardless of
whether they compete or not.
Alistair Brown
PRINCIPAL
There were plenty of opportunities for visitors to chat
informally with staff and students. Many parents commented
on the positive, supportive and respectful relationships
between teachers and students that were so evident during
the course of the evening. An event like this doesn’t happen
without enormous support from the whole school community.
Congratulations to our staff and students for their contributions
to this special evening.

2016 NAPLAN Testing - 10th to 12th May 2016
NAPLAN tests are undertaken nationwide, every year, in the second full
week in May.
The tests concentrate on the sorts of skills that are essential for every student to
progress through school and life, in the following four areas:
• Reading
• Writing
• Language Conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation)
• Numeracy.
Specific information regarding the program, including details about the tests,
participation, special provisions and a wide range of other issues can be found on
the NAP website:

If required, please contact Susan O’Leary – Assistant Principal Year 9 on 8139 9352 for
further information.
Maths Matters
Heathfield High School students will again be taking part in the
Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC).
Interested students will have received a letter about the competition from their
maths teacher.
Unlike formal examinations in mathematics, many of the problems in the AMC are set
in situations to which students can relate, indicating the relevance of mathematics in
their everyday lives. Above all the competition is designed to be enjoyable. Certainly
the event is intended to be conducted in a pressure-free environment (not affecting
normal school assessment) and the questions are designed to be of sufficient interest
to stimulate discussion at a later time, with friends, parents or classmates.
A sample problem from the year 9 and year 10 division last year:
A bar-tailed godwit was recorded by satellite tag in 2007 to have flown
11 500 km in eight days.
On average, approximately how many kilometres per hour is that?
Maths (and Science) help for all students continues to be available in Room 4 during
lunch time on Thursdays.

Gold Ball 2016
Heathfield Volleyball had five girls and three boys’ teams represent the school at the annual Gold Ball U15
Tournament held on the 19th-20th of March. This competition gives our new volleyball students the perfect
introduction to competitive six aside volleyball. Each team played more than five 50 minute games over the
weekend along with learning how to officiate as the duty team.
The Heathfield Raptors (Girls) finished in 2nd place in their pool
which set up a semi-final against cross town rivals Norwood 1
who were undefeated at that stage of the tournament. This was
a fantastic game with Norwood taking out the close first set 2519. Unfortunately the girls went down 2-0 to finish in equal 3rd
place. In the other girls semi-final we had USC Lion and South
Adelaide 1 competing for a place in the 2016 Gold Ball Grand
Final. USC Lion ended up taking the win in a thrilling match. It
was great to have four different clubs/schools represented in
the semi-finals in the girls division. USC Lion ended up winning
the girls division in a tough 5 set match against Norwood 1.
The boys division had three of the four teams being
represented by Heathfield. The boy’s teams played extremely
competitive matches against each other and South Adelaide
Boys 1 all weekend end. The Heathfield Bucks and Heathfield
Thunder faced off in what was going to be a fantastic Grand
Final. This was a thrilling contest with each team fighting hard
for every point. The game ended up going into a 5th set, where
the Heathfield Thunder came out victorious to take home the
2016 Gold Ball.

Thank you to all of the parents who donated cakes, toasties
or drinks to sell in the canteen as well as the parents who
volunteered their time to run the canteen over the weekend.
Your help was greatly appreciated! Another massive thank you
goes to Mikasa who sponsored the tournament by donating
prizes for 1st and 2nd place and the Gold Ball trophies.
All players who were involved all improved as the weekend
went on under the guidance of our volunteer coaches. The
volleyball program extends a massive thank you to the
following volleyball students who gave up their weekend to
share their knowledge with our U15 players: Emma Yarnold,
Lucas Mark-Seymour, Anna Schoof, Lauren Smith, Scarlett

National Junior Men’s Volleyball Team
Current Heathfield Volleyballer Jack Phelan was selected into the
National Junior Men’s Volleyball Team and has just returned from
a three week tour of Japan.
The team competed against the Japanese U18, U20 and U23 teams. The
team was very up and down during the tour with the first two weeks full of
frustration with players and coaches all knowing they could perform at a
much higher level.
The boys showed great character and resilience, putting together great
performances towards the back end of the trip.
Jack and the rest of the team now refocus on the Asian Junior Volleyball
Championships held in Chinese Taipei in July. Placing in the top four in this
competition will take the boys to World Champs at the end of the year.
Norwood Challenge
On Sunday the 27th of February our U15 players experienced their first 6
aside volleyball competition. In a fantastic lightening carnival format down
at Brighton our players worked together in mixed teams to gain experience
and learn new skills.
A massive thank you goes to the current volleyball students who gave up their Sunday to
coach the Heathfield teams. We had plenty of positive feedback from parents which was
fantastic to hear.

Warrnambool Seaside Volleyball Comp (Seniors)
Four Heathfield teams made the long trip over to Warrnambool over the March long weekend to compete in the
annual Warrnambool Seaside Volleyball Competition.
Both boys’ teams played some great volleyball over the course
of the weekend. Heathfield Boys Blue started the competition
in fine form, beating the South West Pirates 3-0. The next
game against the Blockheads proved to be a tough battle for
the young Heathfield team. Patches of brilliance from Tommi
Kabelitz and Ross McDougal kept the boys in the game, but
the experience of the Blockheads led the older team to a
convincing win. The boys bounced back winning their next
match against HIYSM, showing the boys character and ability
to bounce back after a tough loss. Results unfortunately didn’t
go the boy’s way, pushing them down to 4th position after the
pool games. This paired them up with Riddles Creek, another
older and more experienced team for their final match of the
tournament. The boys again fought well but unfortunately lost
their final game of the tournament.
Heathfield Maroon showed strength through the middle with
Jesse Nichols dominating in both the blocking and attack
stats. Lucas Mark-Seymour showed his class with amazing
power hitting which was complimented by the floor defence
from the rest of the team. Heathfield Boys Maroon ended up
in 2nd place in their pool, meaning that they would face the
Blockheads in the semi-final. The big hitting Heathfield team
came up against a very experienced outfit that rarely made
an error. A thrilling match which ended up going into a third
and deciding set. The Blockheads showed their experience and
pipped the boys at the post, winning 15-13.
The Heathfield Girls Maroon team started slowly, playing the
Heathfield Girls Blue team in their first game. As the game
progressed the girls began to relax and play better volleyball,
but eventually went down 3-0. After settling into the rotations,
the girls defeated the Phantoms in their next game 3-0. Power
hitting from Claudia Taylor gave the girls a spark to get over the
line for their first win. The girls continued this into their next
game against Heidelberg, taking the 2-1 win in a tight contest.
Cross town rivals South Adelaide came out
firing against Heathfield Maroon, showing
their class and experience. Heathfield didn’t
panic and fought extremely hard to push
South Adelaide to their limit. The guts and
determination showed paid off, with the game
being declared a draw when the buzzer sounded. This was a
great effort for our school girls who were competing against
league standard players. Results again didn’t go the girl’s way
pushing them out of the finals race.
After a convincing win against the Heathfield Girls Maroon
team, Heathfield Blue had their eyes set on taking this form
further into the competition. Lucy Ambagtsheer and Emma
Robinson lead the way showing great leadership on and off
the court. The girls went on to beat Monash University and the
Southern Cross Cobras to make it 3 wins and 0 losses from day
one of the tournament. Anna Schoof continued her amazing
form into the tournament winning numerous points on attack
with her big hitting. This helped the girls win crucial games
against South Adelaide 2-0 and Heidelberg 3-0. This put them
in 1st place after the pool matches, setting up a semi-final
against the Renegades. Strong serving from Lucy Ambagtsheer
and Amber Marwede put the pressure on the Renegades from
the very first point of the match. Heathfield Blue dominated
the Renegades winning 2-0 (25-5, 25-13) to book their place in
the Grand Final.
South Adelaide who the girls had previously beaten in the
pool matches also made their way to the Grand Final, setting
up a rematch. Strong hitting and serving that was followed
up by fantastic defence helped the girls come out just in front
every set. Just like the pool game, the Heathfield Girls Blue
team were victorious to be named the Champions of the Div
1 Competition! The girls defeated South Adelaide 3-0 (25-17,
25-18, 25-19).
A massive congratulations to Lucy Ambagtsheer (Div 1
Women, Heathfield Blue) and Lucas Mark-Seymour (Div 2 Men,
Heathfield Maroon) for taking out the competition MVP award
in their respective divisions.
We also had Tommi Kabelitz (Div 2 Men, Heathfield Blue) come
2nd in the MVP race. Well done!!
Thank you to Amy Wood who travelled with the group as well
as coaching the two girls teams for the weekend. We would also
like to thank Roger Willcocks who assisted us over the weekend.

Sports Day
Issue 2 I March 2016
Sports Day – A Red Letter Day
For the first time since 2003, Cox was triumphant on Sports Day. While not as long
a drought as the Bulldogs in the AFL, it had been a while. Not even a slightly damp
start to the day could dampen the enthusiasm of the students and the spectacle of
them proudly displaying their house colours.
The day was a delightful mixture of students striving to achieve personal bests in athletics events
and the frenetic activity of the novelty challenges.
The Tug of War, Sack Race and Three Legged Race were winners but the crowd really warmed to
the staff v house captains’ Bike Relay Race. For the first time in its history the staff were beaten. The
Scott house captains dominated the race from the outset and were delighted with their triumph.
The staff team, which raced without the services of the principal, Alistair Brown, will have a long
hard look at themselves and regroup for 2017.
Another great spectacle was the Gym Ball Relay with each year level competing in houses to race
gym balls around the track.
The serious athletic events produced some stirring finishes and great individual tussles.
The following students were successful in earning trophies and runner medallions in their age groups:

Outdoor Education
On Wednesday, 16th March Ms Tamblyn’s Year 12
Outdoor Education class completed a full day of rock
climbing training in the lead up to their camp at Mt
Arapiles, Victoria.
The students roping skills were tested as they had to set up their
own climbs where they had to work safely at the top of the cliff
edge. They then got to practice their climbing skills on their
climbs and finished off the day with an abseil.

Girls Get Active: Pinery Fire Recovery Activity Day
On 4th April the Girls Get Active group are volunteering at Pinery. They will be camping
the night at Hamley Bridge and then joining the Habitat for Humanity group to undertake
work for a local family affected by the fire.
The reason for assisting is because we care. Our school is in a High fire risk area and in our school
community we have families who have experienced loss because of bushfire. I asked the girls if they were
prepared to get filthy, sleep on the ground and have limited access to toileting facilities. They all said YES!!
One girl expressed concern about feeling sad at seeing the damage. I told her the support provided by
showing you care is probably more important than the rubble and rocks you have to shift
The value of volunteering as far as self-worth is extremely important. These girls are commended for
showing their care for the community and individuals impacted by fire.
Typical tasks undertaken include:
• Clean up of damaged properties
• Clearing away debris from homes, buildings and grounds
• Minor rebuilds and repairs
• Repair damaged gardens and landscaping
Key facts about the Pinery Fire:
• The fire started on 25 November 2015 and affected approximately 85,000 hectares
• Two people lost their lives
• 391 properties were damaged of which approx. 100 houses were destroyed or damaged beyond being
liveable
• Over 50,000 livestock were lost as well as crops valued over $25 million
Habitat for Humanity: is a world-wide not-for-profit organisation working with low income families
around the world to provide ‘a hand up not a hand out’ into home ownership.
Following the Sampson Flat Bushfire in January 2015, Habitat for Humanity SA assisted 70 families who
suffered property damage to clean up, repair and rebuild their homes and properties. Their services are
provided at no cost to the home owner with support coming from volunteers and / or corporate groups.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION TEACHER
Girls Get Active
The name of this class could not be more apt.
This term the Girls from this group have walked the local hills including visiting the top of Mt George.
They have tried their hand at archery including a visit to Archery Park. If you need any one to cull your
feral animals there are a number of girls up to that task!! They have scaled the heights at Latitude, rowed
their way to fitness on their circuit work out along with a dabble in badminton, tennis, netball and more.
Ahead of them is a day of snorkelling and we end the term with one more fitness circuit.
As a teacher I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with this group of Girls. They are supportive
of each other and have taken up all opportunities with such a positive attitude.

Swimming Carnival
Issue 2 I March 2016
Another Wonderful Swimming Carnival
What a way to begin 2016. Perfect weather smiled on the Friday of week one for our
annual swimming carnival at Woodside Swimming Pool.
The day began in sensational style with the staff team beaten into second place by the House
Captains in the Tyre Tow Relay race.
From there a magnificent spectacle followed as the students, adorned with the red, yellow, blue
and green of their houses threw themselves into the spirit of the day. The house captains worked
hard, encouraging as many students as possible to participate in the heats and novelty events.
A new novelty event, the Raft Race, made its debut. Representatives from each house were given
empty drink bottles, string and some noodles to create and race their own rafts. It added another
fun activity to an already vibrant day.
The serious swimming saw some outstanding swimming with the following records broken:
Year 8 Girls Freestyle – Sophie Barrow (14.40). Past Record – C.Sayer (15.65, 2001) *Also beaten by
2nd place Victoria Dewallef (14.55)
Year 10 Boys Freestyle – Cameron McGuinness (12.24). Past record: J.Coy (13.44, 2011)

the lawns.
The house results were as follows with Cox (red) taking out the carnival for the second year
running.
Cox 444
Onkas 393
Scott 347

A special mention needs to be made of the PE/Volleyball staff whose efforts in organising and
running the event cannot be understated.
It starts the year off with a terrific school event that generates a great community feel and helps
reinforce the culture of the school.

Drama Excursion 15 March
On Tuesday 15th March, the Year 8, 10 and 12 Drama classes attended
Slingsby’s production of The Young King as part of the Adelaide Festival of
the Arts.
This unique performance was held at the top of the Myer Centre in the old Dazzleland,
and was the first use of that space since the closure of the theme park. Our students
waited patiently in the Myer Centre as we were escorted up to the theatre by one of the
king’s concierges in groups of 10, where we listened to the rules of the kingdom and were
sorted into four groups of characters from all corners of the kingdom.
The Young King, a short story by Oscar Wilde, was adapted by Slingsby into this engaging
and immersive production, which for many of our Year 8 students, was their first experience
of live theatre. Students who saw the afternoon performance were even treated to an
exclusive Q & A session with the company’s Artistic Director, Andy Packer.
This excursion was part of our regular Drama program in which students in each year
of Drama are able to view a professional performance and analyse its design and
performance elements in a live theatre review. It is always a rewarding an eye-opening
experience for our students, but not always so interactive!

Iced Dreams
It was the morning of Sports Day and there was a small commotion on the
veranda of Kitchen 2 as the Year 12 Business and Enterprise class busily set
up their ice cream stall, Iced Dreams, ready for the day ahead. Each year the
Year 12 Business and Enterprise class operates a business on Sports Day in
order to give students the opportunity to test their skills prior to running
individual businesses later in the year.
After much planning the class selected a range of toppings that would satisfy any sweet
tooth including Gummy Bears, Maltesers, Milo, chocolate and strawberry syrups. Students
were able to choose from any of the available toppings for a set price, or for a little bit
extra really indulge their tastebuds.
At first, there was the concern that the business may suffer due to the dreary skies and
the blustery wind. However, it seems that nothing could deter the ice cream lovers!
The business operated smoothly over the day and attracted customers from all walks
of life. Some customers even returned multiple times which was excellent feedback
in itself. Within the class the students shared the responsibility of the operation of the
business taking shifts in service and production to ensure that everything ran smoothly
and efficiently.
Despite initial fears, the business was deemed successful with an overall profit of over
$600! This income will be split between S4S and Disability Recreation and Sports SA.
The class is looking forward to personally presenting this donation to the charity in the
near future.

Senior S4S
It has been a busy year so far the 2016 Senior S4S team and it has only been one term!
At the beginning of the year, before school even started, a committed group spent their free time
renovating the Year 12 kitchen. Cupboards and benches were replaced, appliances were cleaned, new
utensils were bought and the room was given a fresh coat of paint. This was so the Year 12’s, having a
tough year ahead, could come to school on the first day and enjoy preparing their lunchtime meal in a
clean, friendly environment.
Next, in the first week, all members of S4S played a role in the smooth running of the traditional BBQ
fundraiser at the Swimming Carnival. All profits were added to the S4S budget, so there is enough money
to pay for our school improving projects.
A similar BBQ was held on Sports Day. S4S members managed the BBQ whilst juggling competition events
at the same time and hosted a costume competition, to encourage students to dress up in their house
colour and enjoy themselves. There were many spectacular costumes, but the prizes had to go to The
Joker, who captured the character perfectly, and to The HHS cheer squad, for the effort they put into
costume design and wonderful school pride.
We have several ideas and schemes jostling for our attention and continue to address student issues,
provide feedback to various committees in the school and work on the exciting student projects planned
for 2016.

S4S Excursion to the GRIP Leadership Conference
In Week 6 the S4S were given the exciting opportunity to attend
a GRIP Leadership Conference at the Adelaide Entertainment
Centre. The GRIP Leadership Conference is an event where
schools around South Australia are invited to participate in a
wide range of activities and sessions which are designed to
improve and assist student leadership skills.
Twenty S4S students attended the conference with representation from
each year level. For us this is an important event in our calendar as we are
always trying to better how we operate , and we felt as though this would
be a fantastic opportunity to learn how we can make the activities we
organise more dynamic and appealing to the students.
We participated in seminars such as “How to make your meetings more effective” and “How to make your
events more dynamic” we went away from the event with a variety of exciting creative ideas to help better
student leadership in our school.
From attending the seminar, we came up with a lot of ideas we are very keen to try at school. In fact, during
our last meeting we were discussing how we could better promote our Dress Up Competition for Sports
Day in a way which would get the student attention and create a buzz around the school. Our solution was
instead of the usual bulletin messages we would use a megaphone to call the announcements around
corridors the day before Sports Day. This worked really well and we were very impressed with the effort
students went to show pride in their house colours.
Overall we feel as though S4S has really benefited from attending the GRIP Conference and look forward
to implementing our ideas this year.

Monarto Team Building
As part of the Middle Years ACE program
all Year 9 students participated in the
Monarto Team Building Day.
This day was designed to give our Year 9 students
the chance to form new friendships and bond
with their ACE teacher and ACE group. Students
participated in a range of challenging tasks that
included teamwork, construction, taking safe
risks and problem solving.
Students learnt about persistence, respect and
consideration for others, taking responsibility
for themselves and their actions, and supporting
each other. The Monarto Team Building Day was
very successful.
