RULES OF DEATH VALLEY TRAVEL
Welcome to
BEATTY DEATH VALLEY
We hope you enjoy a safe and relaxing visit to
the land of extremes.
To assist you with this we have developed 5 one-day
excursions. Each day includes up to 10 hours of
explorations including drive time, bringing you back to
your home base in Beatty to enjoy the evening.
SOUTH PARK TOUR
Leaving Beatty on SR(State
Route)-374 Travel South West for
aproximately 4 miles and turn right
on Rhyolite road.
GOLDWELL OPEN AIR
MUSEUM The large sculptures
you see ahead and to the left are at
the Gold Well Open Air Museum, a whimsical sculpture
garden that fits the area.
RHYOLITE, now a true ghost town, was at one time the
third largest community in Nevada! But the fates were not
kind to the town, built entirely on speculation, and it only
existed for 11 years!
Leaving Rhyolite, turn right back onto SR-374 and travel
12 miles. Be sure to check your odometer as you re-enter
the hwy!
HELL’S GATE EXPERIENCE From this point you will
soon begin to drop into the valley, but your next “Stop”
will excite more than your sense of sight and smell. You
are about to shake hands with the devil as you pass through
“Hells Gate”! Near Mile Marker 10 you will want to
turn off your heater or cooler, roll down your windows
and put your hand out side. Within the next 3 miles
you will experience Hell’s Gate! As you drop through
the inversion layer that holds the heat on the valley floor
the temperature will raise from 10 to 20 degrees! And the
temperature will continue to increase as you approach the
lowest point in the Continental United States.
Once you have greeted the devil you will want to take time
for a photo opportunity at the Hell’s Gate rest area. Nearly
the entire southern valley comes into view here offering
great aerial perspective shots of the valley.
Day
The road splits here and you will want to take the left hand
road. At the end of the road you will turn Left onto SR
190 towards Furnace Creek.
HARMONY BORAX WORKS See a Borax processing
site and borax wagon in this self guided tour.
FURNACE CREEK VISITOR’S CENTER Stop here to
learn more about the valley and to check on road and site
conditions.
FURNACE CREEK RANCH Stop here for lunch,
shopping, and museums. You can also post a letter with a
Death Valley Post mark at the local post office.
BADWATER Leaving the ranch you will turn right
onto 190 for 1 mile and then right onto Badwater Road.
Badwater, the lowest point in the Continental US is about
30 minutes ahead. While there look to the west to see Mt
Whitney, the tallest point in the Continental US
NATURAL BRIDGE Time for a short hike! Leaving
Badwater Turn left to retrace your route, and then right
onto the Natural Bridge Rd. Take a short hike to view the
natural bridge. You might even choose to take the trail
head for a longer hike.
ARTIST’S DRIVE Leaving the Natural Bridge turn right
onto Badwater Road for about 4 miles then turn right
onto Artist’s Drive. About half way through the drive
stop to view Artist’s Pallet, a location where many of the
minerals, each with their own color signatures, makes the
hillside look like a painter’s Pallet. Return to Badwater
Road and turn right onto SR 190.
ZABRISKIE POINT Stop for another great view of
Death Valley. Return to SR190 traveling east.
DANTES VIEW Take this 26 mile round trip to view
Badwater from almost 5600 feet above the Valley. Leaving
Dante’s View return to SR 190, turn right to continue out
of Death Valley.
AMARGOSA OPERA HOUSE Turn right at the
Junction of SR190 and SR 127 to visit this Oasis of the
arts in the desert. Ask for a tour of the Opera house to
see the murals on the walls AND the ceiling. Leaving the
Opera House turn left and follow Hwy 127 (changes to
Hwy 373 at the Nevada border) to Hwy 95 and back to
Beatty for the evening.
WEST PARK TOUR
MESQUITE SAND DUNES
AND THE DEVIL’S CORN
FIELD Departing Beatty take
Hwy 374 to Hells Gate and on
through Mud Canyon to the Valley
floor , where you will take a left
and an almost immediate right
onto SR190 West. In about 4
miles you will see unusual looking bushes on both sides of
the road. This is the Devils Cornfield, and just beyond are
the Mesquite Sand Dunes. You might want to plan a trip
to the dunes at dawn or dusk to view spectacular “running”
shadows.
STOVEPIPE WELLS VILLAGE Stop here for shopping
and supplies. You might also want to take a picture under
the large thermometer. Return to SR 190 turning right as
you enter the hwy.
MOSAIC CANYON Time for another hike! The hike
begins fairly easy and increases in difficulty until you come
up to a 40 ft dry waterfall! Return to SR 190, turn left ,
and travel 9 miles then turn left onto Wild Rose Road.
CHARCOAL KILNS Travel 21 miles on the older,
winding, Wild Rose road, then turn left onto Mahogany
Flat Road for about 7 Miles. They made Charcoal in these
Beehive Ovens. While exploring the inside of the ovens,
whisper a bit to experience the fabulous acoustics! If you
want to take the time to explore the area, there is a trail
head near the Kilns. Retrace your route back to SR 190
and turn left towards Panamint Springs.
DARWIN FALLS Just past Panamint Springs you will
turn left and travel a dirt road to the Darwin Falls parking
area. Follow the trail to the Falls and enjoy a rest before
returning to the trailhead. Retrace your route to about 8
miles past Stovepipe Wells then turn right onto Salt Creek
Road
Salt Creek Trail: Take a stroll along this self guided
boardwalk. You will travel along the Salt Creek marsh and
onto the end where the Salt Creek Pupfish live. Retrace

Junction, turning left and traveling
another 23 miles to the Castle. You

Ubehebe Craters.
UBEHEBE CRATERS These craters were formed by
Steam Eruptions. The Ubehebe, itself is about 600 feet

TITUS CANYON Leaving Beatty,
follow SR 374 for 5 miles to the Entrance to Titus Canyon.
This is a three hour, one way trip back through history.
You will cross over Red Pass which offers some great vistas.
Further on you will come to the Leadfield ghost town.
Leadfield “boomed” for less than a year in 1926-27 because
the lead deposits bottomed out quickly. Today, all that is left
are a few shacks and a number of mines. Many of the mines
may be open, but do not enter, for no mine is considered
safe and you may also find that the tunnel is home to local
animals or reptiles that do not wish to be disturbed.
Just past Leadfield, you will enter Titus canyon itself, with
Limestone cliffs rising above the wash. With Klare Spring
nearby this is a great place to view Bighorn Sheep and
other wildlife that depend on the water the spring provides.
The Shoshone Indians came to the spring to hunt the
bighorn and they left behind petroglyphs etched into the
rock. These ancient designs are irreplaceable. Please have
respect for their historical and cultural value, and do not
vandalize them.
The final 1.5 miles of the canyon is the narrowest. The walls
squeeze down to less than 20 feet apart in some places.
Death Valley
There are several possible hikes you might want to take to
make this a true outback Junction
adventure and to view more of
the splendor of the canyon,.
GOLFING AT FURNACE CREEK RANCH If you enjoy
a round of golf you might want to travel back to Furnace
creek Ranch to spend a few hours on the local golf course.

RACE TRACK TOUR
(4 Wheel suggested, High
clearance required. Consider
renting a jeep at Furnace Creek.)
Once you leave the pavement you will
want to slow down or you just might
rattle yourself right off the road! It
can get pretty rough.
Take hwy 95 North approximately 38 miles to Scotty’s
Junction, where you will turn LEFT onto SR-267 Scotty’s
Castle Road, traveling past the castle for about 5 miles. Turn
Right onto Race track road. If you have not yet visited the
Ubehebe Craters you could do so now! Just follow the signs.
Back on the main road again for about 20 miles you will come
to TEAKETTLE JUNCTION, a one time Geocaching site.
About 2 miles after Teakettle Junction you will turn left to
stay on the Racetrack Road.
At the Racetrack you will want to check to make sure the
lake surface is dry….if there is any sign of moisture DO
NOT go any further, as you will disturb the surface which
could affect the travel of the moving rocks.
Once you have enjoyed the race track, retrace your route
back to Beatty.
