DAY 1
Depart Reno and head to Walker Lake and
Hawthorne, dubbed “America’s Patriotic Home.”
The red, white and blue streets and flags blowing in
the wind are testament to the town’s great national
pride. Part of this pride is rooted in the 147,000
acre Hawthorne Army Depot ammunition storage
facility. The Hawthorne Ordnance Museum is a
great place to witness some of this ammunition
up close, and see a variety of military uniforms,
photos and memorabilia. Continue to Tonopah
and tour the open air Tonopah Historic Mining
Park. After the sun sets, stargaze under the darkest
skies in the nation. Overnight in Tonopah.
DAY 2
On your way to Scotty’s Castle in Death Valley
National Park, visit the historic town of Goldfield,
home to the haunted Goldfield Hotel. Upon
arriving at Scotty’s Castle, take a living history tour
of the fantasy mansion hidden in the green oasis
of Grapevine Canyon. Continue on to Furnace
Creek headquarters for the Death Valley National
Park Visitors Center or take the Beatty turnoff and
visit Rhyolite GhostTown and the Goldwell Open Air
Museum. Overnight in Furnace Creek or Beatty.
