ArtBeat 2015 May - The Pahrump Arts Council
ArtBeat Bulletin May 2015 Pahrump Arts Council 775-751-6776 +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Reminder: Annual meeting and election of board members Monday, May 11, 2015, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Sanders Family Winery, 3780 E. Kellogg Road. Join us for a social hour and brief meeting! Bring your ideas, suggestions, and hear the plans for the coming year. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Give Me Gershwin! Theater Las Vegas brings a cast of 12 professional singers and dancers to town on Saturday, June 13 for a matinee performance at 2:00 p.m. in the Pahrump Valley High School auditorium, featuring the beloved and timeless music of George and Ira Gershwin. The High Desert Chorale (Andy Barnum, director) has been invited to provide the backup chorus for the second half of the program! The Chorale members went right from the Spring concert into rehearsals with TLV members for “Gershwin” and are having a great time. There may be other surprises as well, so mark your calendars for this special date and tell your friends and neighbors. Tickets will go on sale May 11 at the Pahrump Art Gallery (Monday through Saturday, 10 – 4) and the PAC office (Monday and Tuesday, 10 – 1) at $10 per person. Seating will be limited, so make your reservations now by calling 775-751-6776. +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Fantasticks! Tentative plans, depending on scheduling, call for Theater Las Vegas to bring us “The Fantasticks,” a musical with memorable score – think “Try to Remember” - most likely in July. After opening in 1960 off-Broadway, The Fantasticks went on to become the longest-running production in the history of stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world. Watch for more information on this! +++++++++++++++++++++++++ Wild West Extravaganza and Bluegrass Festival The PAC booth and Pahrump Art Gallery booth enjoyed a lot of “foot traffic” over the weekend in an excellent location near the music and next to a food truck! It was fun talking to people from all over and hearing about their interest in the arts and sharing what we do in our community. Thanks to Doris Smith for staffing the PAC booth all weekend (with setup and take down support from Chip Danielson) and additional assistance from the Gallery artists in the next booth, Lloyd Martin, Gary Howland, Charlise Butler, Nancy Stillwell, Ty Cook, Jim Foster. If I missed anyone, sorry! Thank you all!! ++++++++++++++++++++++++ “Birds of a Feather” gather at the Pahrump Art Gallery (next to the library with the Chapter Two Bookstore) to talk art on the first Wednesday of the month at 1:00 p.m. Bring your work for show and tell, enjoy refreshments and good conversation. And bring a friend! Laurie McCaslin will demonstrate how to frame your picture and get it ready for hanging. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Membership Dues Renew your 2015-2016 PAC membership now. The Pahrump Arts Council achieved 501-c-3 status, a designation by the Internal Revenue Service of the federal government, as of April 20, 1993. Then known as the Pahrump Visual and Performing Arts Council, or PVPAC, the organization formed as a Nevada nonprofit corporation with the purpose of providing support for the arts and arts education. Our mission is to create an environment for the arts to flourish in our community. “A non-profit organization is a group organized for purposes other than generating profit and in which no part of the organization's income is distributed to its members, directors, or officers. Non-profit organizations must be designated as nonprofit when created and may only pursue purposes permitted by statutes for non-profit organizations. For federal tax purposes, an organization is exempt from taxation if it is organized and operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, public safety, literary, educational, prevention of cruelty to children or animals, and/or to develop national or international sports.” (source Cornell University School of Law) “Nonprofit corporations are exempt from the income taxes that affect other corporations but only if they conduct business exclusively for the benefit of the general public… Nonprofit organizations may charge money for their services, and contributions to tax-exempt nonprofit organizations are tax deductible. The Internal Revenue Service must approve the tax-exempt status of all nonprofit organizations except churches.” (source-the Free Dictionary) A nonprofit corporation is not organized for the financial benefit or profit of individual members. Information about nonprofits in Nevada is recorded with the Secretary of State and is open to public scrutiny. Nonprofits are regulated by the laws of Nevada, which has passed laws in the past two sessions of the legislature that govern the activities of nonprofits. PAC falls under the “c-3” section of the IRS “501” tax code for non-profits that covers religious, charitable and educational corporations. ++++++++++++++++++++++++ Loretta Lindell May 2015
