Visit America’s Past Today
Only in Newport can you
walk through centuries
of American life in an
afternoon. Each house you
visit is an authentic icon
of one of the great eras of
American history. Hunter
House was here when the
Battle of Bunker Hill was
Mrs. E. Maitland Armstrong &
fought; Chateau-sur-Mer
saw the age of global
children, c. 1915
commerce by American
clipper ships like Flying Cloud; and The
Breakers opened as the Vanderbilts’ latest
achievement in the era in which railroads
revolutionized the nation much the way jetliners and the internet would a century later.
CHATEAU-SUR-MER 1852 National Historic Landmark
A product of the American-China Trade
and one of America’s great Victorian
houses, Chateau-sur-Mer was home to
three generations of the Wetmore family.
You’ll see hand-carved Italian woodwork,
Chinese porcelains, Egyptian and Japanese
Revival stenciled
wallpapers, and rare
trees from as far away
as Mongolia.
H UNTER H OUSE
c. 1748 National Historic Landmark
Pass through the front door of
Hunter House and you step back
into Newport’s 18th century Golden
Age, the era before the American
Revolution. It was the home of a
merchant, ship owner and colonial
deputy, which later became the
Revolutionary War headquarters
of the French Navy. You’ll see up
close a great collection of exquisite
colonial furniture, created by
legendary Newport craftsmen like
the Townsends and Goddards.

T HE B REAKERS
1895 National Historic Landmark
The Breakers is a surviving jewel of the New York
Central Railroad fortune, making a statement
about the global sensibilities of the Vanderbilt
family. The 70-room summer estate of Cornelius
Vanderbilt II includes a two and a half story high
Great Hall and a Morning Room adorned with
platinum leaf wall panels. Its interiors feature rare
marble, alabaster, and gilded woods throughout.

1901 National Historic Landmark
The summer retreat of coal
magnate Edward Berwind and his
wife Herminie, The Elms was a
thoroughly “modern” house in 1901.
So technologically advanced for its
time it appeared to work “as if by
magic,” it also houses monumental
art works, including wall-sized
Venetian paintings, Chinese lacquer
panels and tapestries.

R OSECLIFF
1902
The newest Newport Mansions audio tour brings Rosecliff’s
history and romance to life with never-before-told stories
and first person remembrances of its colorful families. From
Tessie Oelrichs, who built this fantasy in terra cotta, to the
Monroes of New Orleans, the last family to call Rosecliff
home, you’ll discover the very human story of Newport’s
great party house.
The Victorian Wardrobe Revealed:
1840-1900
This exhibit features never-before-displayed
fashions from our historic costume collection, including a walking suit designed
by the great Parisian couturier Charles
Frederick Worth and a dress with buttons
depicting the ruins of Machu Picchu. Clothing
and accessories from each decade illustrate
the stylistic evolution of the Victorian era and
advances in the way fashionable garments
were manufactured and retailed.

K INGSCOTE 1841
National Historic Landmark
Built in 1841 for Georgia plantation owner George Noble
Jones and rebuilt for the King family in 1881, Kingscote still
possesses original rooms from each era. At the center is one
of America’s greatest dining rooms, with Tiffany glass and a
unique cork ceiling. Its furnishings reflect the King family’s
success as China Trade merchants, with rare furniture, silver
collections, and Chinese decorative arts.
C HEPSTOW 1861
This charming Italianate-style cottage was designed by
Newport architect George Champlin Mason. Today it reflects the
mid-20th century style of its last owner, Alletta Morris McBean,
a descendant of Lewis Morris III, a signer of the Declaration of
Independence. The house contains original family furnishings,
and a collection of important 19th century American paintings,
including Hudson River landscapes.

For 67 years, The Preservation Society of Newport
County has brought America’s heritage to life. In 1945,
a group of visionaries founded the Preservation
Society to save Newport’s internationally-significant
architecture from the wrecking ball and neglect.
That work continues today.
The Preservation Society of Newport County is a
private, non-profit, member-supported organization,
accredited by the American Association of Museums.
More than 30 million visitors have passed through the
magnificent gates and gardens of our properties, coming
from every U.S. state and from around the world.
Your memberships, visits to the houses, purchases in
our Newport Mansions Stores and donations are the
lifeblood of the Preservation Society. By visiting us, you
are making your own investment in preserving our
heritage. Your support makes it possible for us to
maintain these properties—seven of them recognized
as National Historic Landmarks—so that they can
continue to be enjoyed by many generations to come.
The preservation of these historic structures is a
never-ending labor of love for all of the Preservation
Society’s employees, because we believe in the vision
of our founders. We thank you for making it
possible for us to fulfill that vision.
THE PRESERVATION SOCIETY PARTNERS WITH
NATIONAL TRUST INSURANCE SERVICES
Risk management is a critical piece of the protection of any great
property, whether it is decades old or centuries
old. The Preservation Society has turned to one of
the nation’s most trusted and experienced insurance
firms, National Trust Insurance Services. They
provide comprehensive risk assessments of our
properties and insurance solutions which are
annually evaluated and revised to minimize threats to these
incredible national treasures.
