Business Spotlight:
The Butterfly Inn
The Arcadia Valley Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting
in Centerville, MO, at the recently opened bed and breakfast
establishment owned by Ron and Terry Haskell.
Ron and Terry gave us a tour of the B & B and informed us that there
would be a wedding held that weekend at the beautiful Reed Springs
located just a short distance from the
B & B. The wedding couple would be
spending their wedding night at The
Butterfly Inn. If you are driving through
Centerville, stop by and visit with the
Haskells. They are a wonderful couple
and we welcome them to the Arcadia
Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Reed Springs
This 56 degree spring is channeled into small lakes, with
waterfalls, which eventually empty into the Black River. It is not
known how far into the hills this beautiful spring starts, but it has
served the area surrounding Centerville in the most useful ways in
every era of its time. In 1881, Nathaniel Scott built the dam and
grist mill to grind the corn into meal and wheat into flour. Shortly
thereafter a saw mill was erected supplying much needed lumber to
early settlers to build their homes. Sometime before 1915, Dr. Shy
had the idea of generating electricity from its water power, so they
took off the overshot wheel, installed a turbine and ran electric lines
into town. Though the lights were bright at the mill, but dim in
town, this supplied the towns’ electric until 1929. The original
building and wheel were taken apart, board by board and sent to
San Francisco for exhibition at the 1939 Worlds Fair. This
display is now in storage at the Smithsonian Institution in
Washington D.C.
DID YOU KNOW . . . there is a website called www.missouri-vacations.com that features
almost anything you would want to know about the Arcadia Valley Region and the Black River
Recreation Area. It is fascinating to view and you will learn a lot about our area. I discovered the
information about Reed Springs on this site. Thank you RIVER VALLEY REGION ASSOCIATION for making this website possible.

Amtrak Update
There has been much skepticism about the Arcadia
Valley getting an Amtrak station stop at Whistle
Junction, but the Our Town Tomorrow organization
and the City of Arcadia are working very hard to
bring this train stop to fruition.
At the present time, an engineering firm, Engineering Surveys and Services, is preparing the platform
design plans for the station platform. Survey work
has been done. To get final approval from Union
Pacific for the station stop, the platform design
plans have to be done. Amtrak has already given
their approval. The cost of design plans will be
$13,000 and to date we have received $5,590 in
contributions from our community.
On September 27th, Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson met with OTT and the City of Arcadia about the
project. She also visited the AV Chamber of Com-

and will be working closely with us to seek funding for the construction of the platform once it is
approved.
OTT is still needing to raise the remaining amount
due for the design plans. If you would like to
help, please send your contribution to Our Town
Tomorrow, P. O. Box 225, Ironton, MO 63650.
