Shared Harvest Foodbank
2008 Annual Report
Celebrating 25 years of service
To our Partners in Hunger Relief:
A year ago, we faced unprecedented hunger
while many traditional food sources were moving
in the opposite direction, forcing
us to ask more of you. Your
response was more than we could
have ever imagined and for that
we are eternally grateful.

Our Mission:
To find, rescue and
distribute food to people
living in poverty through
an efficient network,
uniting the public and
private sectors;
To raise awareness of
the impact of poverty.
While we celebrated the
Foodbank’s first 25 years
last autumn with recognition,
support and reminiscing, we
Gary Cornett
knew a real estate and credit
meltdown loomed. But few could
have predicted what has now
become the biggest economic crisis our nation has
experienced since the Great Depression. At this
writing, with unemployment at 7.5%, some suggest it
will reach as high as 12% later this year.
If there was any doubt about how hunger knows
no party lines, socio-economic class, race or creed,
the current environment makes it crystal clear. For
those unable to work as well as those unable to find
work, we are challenged with a need for charitable
food distribution not seen in our lifetime. In the
face of decreasing food sources, hunger is rising
geometrically.
In these times the words of Dr. Martin Luther
King truly resonate. “The ultimate measure of a
man is not where he stands in moments of comfort
and convenience, but where he stands at times of
challenge.” I am confident and grateful that we will
respond to the challenge.

A letter from our director
Dear Foodbank Friends & Supporters:
As we watched the mortgage crisis grow, the economy falter, the meltdown
of Wall Street and marginalization of Main Street in 2008, the lines at our partner
food pantries, soup kitchens and shelters grew longer and longer. And we all faced
these longer lines with less food, as a dawning awareness of the depth of this
crisis began to take hold in the Spring. Job losses continued to mount, foreclosures
multiplied and people who were once supporters of their local food pantries and
Shared Harvest were finding themselves standing in those long lines.
“I have a full-time job, but it isn’t enough to buy everything we need.”
Just as we began implementing plans to gather and distribute more food, the
hurricane force winds that struck our area in September set us all back. Hundreds
of tons of food had to be thrown out, because many of our partner charities lost
power for days, causing refrigerated and frozen supplies to go bad. The same thing
happened to tens of thousands of families across the five counties we serve and
indeed most every county in Ohio.
It was a dark time, stress was high and the light of hope for better days seemed
to grow dimmer with the dawning of each day. But there is one thing I’ve learned in
this business over the past 30 plus years... Have Faith. It is in the darkest of times
that we rally and shine the brightest. And what you will read in this annual report is
not only of the darkness, but also the light. How community after community came
together to help each other, how in the end, Shared Harvest actually distributed
nearly 2,000,000 more pounds of food in 2008 than we did in 2007.
“Due to the rise in grocery prices, we just can’t make it.”
While it is true, as one economist said, “It will get worse before it gets worse,”
I have all the faith in the world that we will continue to step up and meet the
challenges because we have people like you on our side. ‘Thanks’ is just not a big
enough word.
Tina Osso, Executive Director
Hunger in Southwest Ohio 2008
Throughout this annual report, you will see boxes with responses from people
who were asked what brought them to an emergency food pantry.
“My husband is a disabled veteran, and I just got a new job. I drive to
Cincinnati 5 days a week to work, and with gas price so high,
I cannot afford to buy food.”
3
2008: A year filled with challenges...
The economic crisis that faced America in 2008 is well documented by now.
The mortgage and financial market mess, plus skyrocketing costs of fuel, food
and health care combined to send more people to emergency food pantries, soup
kitchens and shelters for help.
It happened at a time when food banks like Shared Harvest had seen a steady
decline in food industry donations in recent years, meaning less food was available.
The economic crisis was first felt in the spring when the cost of diesel fuel
soared well above $4 a gallon, seriously impacting the foodbank’s ability to pick-up
and distribute food.
“As we began putting more money into fueling our trucks, that meant there was
less money to acquire food,” said Shared Harvest Executive Director Tina Osso.
“For example, the cost to receive a shipment from Kellogg’s in Atlanta went from
$700 to $1,200.”
“I had to quit my job because of a very hard pregnancy with a lot of medical
problems, so my husband is the only one working
with 3 kids, mortgage and bills.”
The stress level was high at local food pantries as they tried to cope with
longer lines and less food. Some were forced to close while others reduced hours
or limited the number of families they could assist.
As if things weren’t bad enough, the remnants of Hurricane Ike brought galeforce winds September 14, leaving many southwest Ohio families without power
for up to a week. Some families - already struggling to make ends meet - lost
perishable foods in their refrigerators, as did many pantries and grocery stores. The
storm, followed by late fall layoffs resulting from the national economic downturn,
sent more people pouring into food pantries.
But there was a silver lining, and it began to show itself during the windstorm.
“Community after community responded,” Osso recalled. “Neighbors started
helping neighbors. It was the most incredible resurgence of a close-knit community
that I’ve witnessed in years.”
Food banks nationwide received a boost in the fall in the form of an extra $50
million in USDA product, with the leadership of Senator Sherrod Brown, insisting
it be part of a stimulus package passed earlier in the year. “Senator Brown is a
champion of hunger relief, and he worked tirelessly on behalf of families faced with
empty cupboards every day,” Osso said.
The USDA food and a tremendous outpouring of community support in the
final two months of 2008 allowed Shared Harvest to have a full warehouse while
distributing an additional 2-million pounds of food more than 2007.
4
...but a year of generous responses
The response to the economic calamity of 2008 was unprecedented in Shared
Harvest’s 25-year history. Individuals, businesses and foundations stepped in
to provide a record $451,798 in financial contributions to ensure there would be
enough food for the growing number of people turning to our network partners
for assistance. Below are just a few of the stories of how local people made a
difference in 2008:
The Fairfield office of Intermec Technologies made Shared Harvest its charity
of choice, donating $50,000 in 2008. “Shared Harvest was chosen because of
its ability to touch so many, not only in the Butler County area, but other counties
where our employees live,” said Intermec Executive Assistant Susan Kimball. “We
are proud to contribute to such a worthy and important cause.”
Chaco Credit Union selected the foodbank as its charity, hosting events such
as Community Shred Day, a golf outing, Employee Enrichment Day, and asking
customers to make donations at Chaco offices, raising over $10,000.
In addition to its food contributions in
the Retail Pick-up Program and on other
special occasions, Kroger Company
donated $12,696 through its “Check-out
Hunger” campaign over the holidays, asking
customers to make donations of $1, $2 or
$5 as they checked out their groceries. The
company also provided $35,000 to Shared
Harvest for its summer “Bringing Hope to
the Table” campaign to increase community
awareness of hunger.
Indiana-based Marsh grocery stores
asked customers to make contributions
to Shared Harvest through its “Food for
All” campaign, while customers of Whole
Foods in Mason bought Grab-n-Give bags
of food to help the foodbank.
Above: Chaco Credit Union used a
golf outing as one of
many events to raise money for
Shared Harvest in 2008.
Below: Local letter carriers brought
in nearly 68,000 pounds of food in
their annual food drive.
The Greater Cincinnati Foundation
donated $28,000 in December to help with
the purchase of food to assist the growing
number of clients at local pantries. The
Hamilton Rotary Club donated $5,000, which was matched by a grant from the
Hamilton Community Foundation.
The Hamilton West License Bureau collected nearly $6,500 in donations
from its customers along with 255 pounds of food donations.
Through the Ohio Associaton of Second Harvest Foodbanks, a grant of
$10,550 from WalMart was used to purchase over 12,000 pounds of food.
Our thanks to the many other individuals, schools, clubs, churches and
businesses that generously supported Shared Harvest in 2008.
“I have 3 small but growing children, and even with my husband and I
working, we can hardly make ends meet.”

Back Pack program now serves entire county
Parents of children involved in Shared Harvest Foodbank’s Back Pack
program are noticing a change.
Butler County Success, which provides school liaisons to identify elementary
children who need assistance, surveyed parents about the effectiveness of the
program in 2008. “Fifty percent of parents told us their kids were eating healthier
because of Back Pack and because our school liaisons have referred familes in
need to food pantries or to the food stamp
program,” said Suzanne Prescott of Butler

County Success.

2008-09 school year, every public school
district in Butler County is now participating.
Many businesses and foundations support Back Pack including WalMart with
$10,000 through Feeding America, Middletown Community Foundation with $8,000
and the Women’s Initiative of Butler County United Way, which has offered a
second year of funding.
United Way CEO Maureen Noe said the program aligns with one of the
agency’s intended results - helping children become successful adults. “Making a
real difference in a child’s life today creates opportunities for their future,” Noe said.
“Graudating on time is not easy when you’re hungry. The Back Pack program gives
children the opportunity to learn.”

had to be reduced to 1,236 as the cost
to purchase food for the program skyrocketed. Qualifying seniors in Butler, Warren
and Preble Counties receive a 35-pound box of food each month to supplement
their normal grocery shopping.
Mobile Pantry funded by Butler County United Way
Shared Harvest continues to reach
out to families in need who don’t have an
emergency food pantry nearby.
Our Mobile Pantry program delivers a
supplemental supply of food to qualifying
families at three low income apartment
complexes in the Lakota School District.

Food Committee starts purchase program
Shared Harvest Foodbank has put a program in
place to deal with the decline in donated food over
the past few years.
“We were able to start a purchase program
in 2008 with vendors who can regularly provide
basic items like peanut butter, corn and green
beans,” said Shared Harvest’s Donor Development
coordinator Jack Mairn. “If we’re going to continue
having problems with low inventory in our
warehouse, we need to ensure these staples are
always available to pantries.”
Spaghetti sauce is one of the
staples now being supplied to
Shared Harvest through the
purchase program initiated
by the Food Committee.
Mairn serves on a Food Committee which
worked with local pantries to identify a dozen items
that are constantly needed by its customers. “The next phase of our plan is to
encourage people who are conducting food drives to have item-specific drives for
those key products,” Mairn added. The list includes canned fruit, cereal, corn, egg
noodles, green beans, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pork and
beans, spaghetti noodles and sauce and toilet paper.
“Got laid off after 25 years working in a factory. Now I clean part-time.”
Retail Pick-up Program: This program, started by Kroger in 2005, rescues
perishable foods that weren’t purchased by the “sell-by” date, following rigorous
guidelines to ensure safety. In addition to Kroger stores, Whole Foods, Target and
Biggs now participate in the program, which rescued nearly 200,000 pounds of
food last year.
Local food drives: Over seventy
food drives were conducted in 2008,
bringing in more than 126,000 pounds of
food. The annual National Association of
Letter Carriers “Stamp Out Hunger” drive
continues to be the largest single-day drive
with 67,670 in donations in Butler County
last year. Media outlets were involved too.
WPFB AM-FM in Middletown held several
food drives and also donated $435 through
a program in which advertisers helped the
foodbank while buying ads on the radio.
Nexus United Church of Christ held
a Lenten food drive while Fort Recovery
Equity donated 3,600 cartons of eggs to
help needy families at Easter time.
The Ohio Association of Second
Harvest Foodbanks also offers several
programs that help Shared Harvest. Ohio
farmers donate fruit and vegetables through
the Ohio Agriculture Clearance Program.
The Ohio Food Purchase Program assists
Shared Harvest in purchasing discounted

Food Stamp program changes name, goes online
With the snap of a finger, the federal government changed the name of what
has been known as the Food Stamp program. In October, the program became
SNAP - Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
The good news is that families in need in Butler and Warren County can now
seek help online. Shared Harvest’s SNAP
Outreach Coordinator Gloria Bateman
2008 Food Stamp Outreach
says it only takes 15-20 minutes to fill out
an application through the Ohio Benefit
Applications filed: 371
Bank and file it electronically with Job
Food Stamp benefits accrued:
and Family Services. That expedites the
$645,048
review of applications and ultimately the
time in which families can begin receiving
benefits.
Changing the Food Stamp program to SNAP has one other benefit. “When I go
to food pantries, I have a sign on the table that says SNAP, so a lot of people ask
me what it is,” Bateman explained. “Some who ask already receive food stamps,
but those who don’t are surprised that I can fill out the paperwork online so quickly.”
Gloria meets with clients at Serve City, Open Door Pantry, and New Life
Mission in Hamilton, Pat’s Pantry in New Miami, Humanity Center in Middletown,
Oxford Community Choice Pantry, Franklin Area Community Services and Lebanon
Food Pantry. This project is supported by the Warren County United Way and the
Ohio Association of Second Harvest Foodbanks.
Online program connects clients to services
People who turn to an emergency food pantry for help often need more than
a sack of groceries. A new web-based program called the Virtual Case Manager
is helping to give pantry staff a better snapshot of the types of services each client
needs.
Eighteen Butler County social service agencies are now utilizing the service,
and most of them came on board in 2008. “We would love to add more agencies in
2009, because the more partners we have, the better and more useful the project
will be,” said Joel Fink of the Grants Consortium at Butler County United Way.
Virtual Case Manager, a free web-based program, provides an efficient way to
analyze social services the client currently receives, but it also refers them for other
services to help families become more stable economically. Utilizing VCM ensures
they receive the full range of services they need to be more self-sustaining.
Clients must give permission to food pantry staff to enter their name into the
VCM system. The FEED Alliance of Butler County instituted the Virtual Case
Manager through a grant from the Greater Cincinnati Foundation and is hosted by
Shared Harvest on our website.

Shared Harvest celebrates 25 years of service
Tina Osso would have been stunned in
1983 if you had told her the foodbank she was
launching would distribute nearly 10-million
pounds of food 25 years later.
Shared Harvest Foodbank celebrated 25
years of providing food to hungry people in
2008, distributing 9.9 million pounds of food, a
far cry
from the 300,000 pounds distributed that
first year.
The foodbank’s supporters helped to
mark the 25th anniversary with a dinner
and silent auction October 2 at Receptions
Conference and Banquet Center.
Shared Harvest’s Tina Osso and her
brother Chuck, honored Gene Roe as
an original member of the foodbank
network. Sadly, the foodbanking
community lost Gene in late 2008. She
will be sorely missed.
We’d like to thank event organizers
Melanie Roesch and Liz Colantuono as well
as the many event sponsors, donors and
friends who helped us mark the milestone.
“Our medical conditions have to be treated on an emergency room basis
because I can’t afford health care in a one-income household.”
People respond generously at the holidays
Individuals and businesses dug deep in their pockets to help their neighbors
with food and gifts for the holiday period between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
A total of 49 businesses, schools, clubs and churches (see list on page 10)
conducted Holiday Aid food drives, bringing in 48,148 pounds of food, an increase
of 11,000 pounds compared to 2007.
More than 8,600 people requested holiday food baskets and gifts through the
Holiday Community Project - a collaborative of numerous social service agencies.
The response was overwhelming, with nearly $254,000 in gifts and food donated to
assist individuals and families in need.

JournalNews project achieves record results
“Hunger is not a choice. Giving is.” That’s the message readers of the Hamilton
JournalNews received through stories and advertisements as part of the 5th annual
JournalNews Food Relief campaign.
The project, which started the Sunday before Thanksgiving and ran through
early January, achieved record donations in 2008. JournalNews Food Relief
received $22,166, eclipsing the previous high mark of $19,593 in 2006. There were
619 total gifts averaging nearly $36 per donor.
The campaign was the idea of Publisher Edwina Blackwell-Clark and is similar
to the long-runnning Dayton Daily News Valley Food Relief project. Cox Ohio and
the JournalNews donated advertising space and also promoted the project through
in-store radio ads at Kroger, Meijer and Walgreen stores.
