What is Street Bikers United Hawaii, Inc? An ORGANIZATION that works on behalf of all
motorcyclists in the state of Hawaii, promoting motorcycle safety and protecting motorcyclists
from legislation that may negatively affect the right to ride free. The optional helmet law, affordable
motorcycle insurance, and the ability to build and register your custom ride in Hawaii are just a
few reasons why your support of Street Bikers United Hawaii, Inc is so important. Street Bikers
United Hawaii, Inc is not a club but an organization that is open to all riders, regardless of club
affiliation or type of motorcycle you choose to ride. Your membership donation goes to fight
anti-motorcyclist legislation in Hawaii. Continue to ride free.

STREET BIKERS UNITED HAWAII, INC 2
STATE DIRECTOR
Brian Grayling
The Legislature is ready to reconvene this month, and SBUHI is
gearing up to tackle the motorcyclist rights agenda for yet another
year. It seems that the justices and politicians are slowly following the lead of other states and recognize that highway safety and
protection of motorcyclists should be given the consideration it
deserves. The drunken driver who killed a motorcyclist in 2008 is
just now coming to court, an event only made newsworthy since
the bail was increased to $500,000 due to flight risk. What is astonishing is that this driver had two bench warrants outstanding for more than two years,
with a suspended license for a previous DUI conviction. If legislation is proposed to
strengthen the DUI laws and police presence, SBUHI will fully support it. Driving a car
while drunk causing a motorcyclists death should carry the charge of murder by use of a
deadly weapon. It works in Australia and Europe, where tough laws have reduced highway death dramatically. No messing around.
Motorcyclists have always been the victim of inattentive motorists, and one of the smartest
pieces of Oahu legislation in 2009 was to ban the use of hand held cell phones while driving. This was based on a sensible Connecticut law, and The Big Island followed Oahu’s
lead. It is hoped that the other islands will follow suit, and SBUHI will encourage this
change in the local law. The death of even one biker because a car driver was texting is
unacceptable.
The Department of Transportation continues to operate in a 1930’s mindset. Interminable meetings, with SBUHI participating, were held last year by teleconference to
discuss the rules governing the motorcycle
training ranges and instructor requirements. These were round table debates,
with department heads on screen from all
the islands, and hours of taxpayers money
going down the drain. For what? Except
for the small program at LCC, these rules
govern a non-existing motorcycle training
program run by non-existing instructors,
chaired by a DOT representative who has
never sat on a motorcycle.
The latest
round of meetings begin again this month.

SBUHI NEWSLETTER
JANUARY, 2010
Rick Davis
Oahu Chapter President
I want to thank everyone who attended the calendar meeting.
Hopefully, we have the dates and rides correct, a copy should be in
the newsletter, check it and if you find a mistake, let us know.
Well we had a good turnout and good weather for the Toys for Tots parade. I want to
thank everyone who made the parade for the toys and also to the companies, clubs and
riders who donated cash to help cover the cost of the parade. We had some confusion
with the police detail, we will try to solve it for the next Toy parade.
We had a lot of good runs in November and December. VietNam/Legacy Vets Veteran’s
Day run, also Pacific Knights school supplies collection, Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels,
Koa Puna Hoolaulea, Kanaka Hekili party after the Toy parade, Combat Vets Skivvies Run,
Christmas Meals on Wheels, I know all the clubs appreciated those who attended their
functions.
A rumor has been put out that the toys and money collected for the Toy run does not stay
in Hawaii, that is not true, anyone can contact me and I will explain to them where the
collected toys go and how they are issued out.
On Sunday, December 31st I made the Masonic M/C ride Wet & Wild run, while going
through Kapolei they were pulled over by the police for road guarding and blocking the intersection.
SAFETY: December was a bad month for us, we lost three bikers. Please ride careful.
STOLEN BIKES: No info at this time. I understand someone had a bike stolen from their
garage and the bike was locked. But I don’t have all the details on this.
NOTE: We have a new legislative session starting in January, so we know we will be facing
more motorcycle bills so we need to get as many new SBUHI members as we can.
UNITED WE STAND DIVIDED WE FALL!

Bikers bring Toys for Tots miles closer to year’s goal
12/9/2009 By Cpl. Cristina Noelia Gil, Marine Forces Pacific
HONOLULU — More than 6,500 motorcycle enthusiasts came together to
share their passion for riding and help Hawaii’s less-fortunate children
during the 35th Annual Street Bikers United Toy Run Dec. 6.
The annual ride which benefits the Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program began at Ala Moana Beach
Park and ended at Kapiolani Community College. Marines were on hand at both locations to accept new, unwrapped toy donations from the bikers.
“[The Toy Run] keeps getting bigger every year,” said the state director of Street Bikers United, Brian Grayling. “It’s a wonderful experience to work with the Marine Corps in their efforts for Toys for Tots. I’m thankful
for all the years they have given to Toys for Tots and also for the community in Waikiki for putting up with
all the noise in the spirit of Christmas.”
Many bikers have made the event a tradition in their bike clubs and among their circles of friends and family. One Honolulu family has made the event an annual opportunity to give back to their community.
“We have been a part of [the Toy Run] for 10 years and we absolutely love it. I like to stress to my kids the
importance of volunteering and community service,” said Lisa Cabral who rode with her husband, two teenaged children and the family dog. “I want to make sure my kids know how important it is to give back and
share with others.”
The Toy Run collected more than 4,000 toys and more than $2,000 in donations, bringing Toys for Tots
closer to this year’s goal of 45,000 toys. All toys the program collects stay in Hawaii to benefit less-fortunate
children.
Throughout the month of December Toys for Tots will continue accepting new, unwrapped toys at various
locations across the island. For information on toy drop-off locations and Toys for Tots events this holiday
season visit www.toysfortots.org.
