Although his passing occurred in November, I felt I would be remiss if I didn’t offer proper condolences to someone who was a gentle soul that did whatever he was involved in without noise, without complaint and without looking for a pat on the back. It is members such as Ruben that made the wheels of our Lodge go around and he will be missed. Ruben Marcovici: Passed away on November 24, 2011. Beloved husband of Margaret Reid. I sat in a room with about 40 people at the Nomination/Election General Meeting on Sunday, February 12, 2012 and was mesmerized by the sceen. This was a motorcycle action flick of a different kind. No, it wasn’t Ghost Rider. There wasn’t a flaming skull riding on a bike throwing fireballs – this film showed overweight bikers who claim they eat matzah balls. Andy Reti is a member of the Hillel’s Angels, narrated the scenes in a manner that made me smile with pride. On screen were Jewish bikers on motorcycles that made ones eyes pop with admiration, describing the scenes in his Hungarian accent (he claims he hasn’t got an accent- we just hear funny) and making us aware, once again, that it’s good to be Jewish. The audience was spellbound watching the beautiful scenery, the long line of bikers travelling on a busy highway, the roar of the engines and the exhilaration of freedom that only a bike can offer. The idea of Jewish bikers seems unlikely. Bikers are thought of as tough, burly, tattooed and whiskered. These bikers to some degree blended in to that description except many carried a star around their necks, a kippah under their helmets and their faith on their sleeves. The Ride to Remember began in 2005 when Jewish bikers from Canada and the U.S. went to “Washington to commemorate the liberation of the camps”. The next year they rode to Whitwell, Tennessee to be a part of what is remembered as the Paper Clip Ride. Jewish bikers donated to a nonJewish school a dozen special computerized learning screens, paper clips and $50,000. In 2009, they rode to New York and last year, the Ride to Remember was held in Chicago. At the inaugural R2R in Washington, a picture album was presented to the United States Holocaust Museum and the Toronto Holocaust Museum containing a dedication by each rider to honour somebody from the Holocaust. On Andy’s bike, there is a photo of his mother, Ibi, a Holocaust survivor, which is also hanging in the hallway at the Holocaust Centre in Toronto. And this year on June 1st, 2012, Jewish bikers from Canada, the U.S., Australia and parts of Europe are coming to Toronto with a side trip to Ottawa. This Ride is called “Never Again”, and as all the other previous Rides will leave an impact when they arrive. Their presence sends a message. Their enthusiasm sends a message. Their appearance sends a message. They are bikers. They are Jewish bikers. They are Jews with a cause! Andy did well. We can all be proud of what he represents. Now, if he could only get rid of that accent, ehh!
