The Pembroke House Family Triathlon
The Pembroke House Family Triathlon
T
he Pembroke House Family Triathlon is an annual
sporting event that Peponi takes great pride in both
sponsoring and competing in. This year we had a total of
12 students participating, who on Saturday the 28th of
September drove up to Gilgil feeling eager and ready. Most
of us were entered into the intermediate category, which
consisted of a 200m swim, a 10km bike ride and a 5km run.
However one brave soul, Connor Miller, attempted the daunting
advanced course which required great determination to finish the
400m swim, 25km cycle and 6km run. It was a hot and sunny
day, making the event even more of a challenge, but this did not
slow us down or dampen our spirits.
All of our triathletes performed to the best of their abilities, with
several exceptional performances. Our only team entry, made
up of the gap students Jack, Tom and Kit, placed first in the team
category with the only time under one hour. Morgan and Kevin
placed first and second respectively in the individual category
meaning, as a group, Peponi dominated the podium. Special
thanks must go to Erik Kanyeri for organising the event, Mr
Durston for his hospitality over the weekend and Ngina and Judy
for their work in promoting the school at the event.

he trip to Watamu for the Upper Sixth Geography class
is the highlight of the course! This year we stayed at the
beautiful Temple Point Resort and were welcomed with a
cool refreshing fruit punch, which we all needed, considering we
had been sitting in a hot van for 2 hours from Mombasa airport.
After dropping our luggage off in our rooms, we headed to the
hotel lobby to receive information about the first activity from Ms.
Meruh and Ms. Litoro. Luckily, our first activity was to walk down
to the beach and explore the hotel! This was a relaxing activity
for the girls, whilst the boys opted for a more exciting activity:
jumping into the pool to play an exhilarating game of water polo.
Following a relaxed first day, we were not ready for the work we
would have to do the following day. We had a quick breakfast
and jumped into the van to travel to Malindi where we visited
the historical monuments ; the Gede Ruins and Vasco Da Gama
Pillar as well as the thick jungles of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest.
We explored the different attractions that draw tourists to Kenya
as well as the challenges faced by the tourism industry. At each of
the sites we received well informed tours, where we learnt a great
deal about Malindi. That evening we had a prep session, where
we were divided into two groups and debated various issues
on the topic of tourism. The following morning, we had another
quick breakfast and began picking out bikes from the bike stand.
We then rode them down to a beach which was five minutes
away while the teachers decided to walk. We split into groups
and began our coastal studies work in the scorching sun which
consisted of measuring gradients of slope and making sketches.
Later that evening we had a scrumptious dinner coupled with
great conversation and then assessed our results and drew graphs
in another prep session.

The next morning, it was obvious that we all did not want to leave
but we climbed into the van and began the drive into Mombasa.
Ten minutes away from the airport the van broke down but we
were still able to make it in time for our flight!
Thanks to Ms. Meruh and Ms. Litoro for organising the trip.

n October last year, eighteen Peponi
students set off on the long eight-hour
flight to Heathrow. We landed safely
in London and, exhausted, we hauled our
suitcases onto the Underground. Finally, after
dragging our suitcases though the rain trying
to find the right one, we arrived at our hotel.
We had brunch, unpacked and cleaned up.
By this time it was past 4pm on Sunday
afternoon, and so we quickly departed for
Camden Market to enjoy an afternoon of
shopping.
After an early night, we were ready for a
London Bus tour. Taking longer than we had
expected, we headed back to the hotel and
were welcomed with a three-course meal
and our cozy rooms. The next few days were
taken up with sightseeing to Westminster
Abbey, the Houses of Parliament, Trafalgar
Square and Hyde Park [where we were

supposed to have lunch, but due to the
British weather we were not able to sit in
the park]. We also visited many museums
and art galleries including the Wellcome
Museum, [a museum of scientific oddities],
The British Museum and The Tate Modern.
One treat which caused much excitement
was watching the West End production of
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
We also had a chance to enjoy lunch at
Convent Garden and browse through the
market and one evening we all opted for a
trip to the London Dungeons, a terrifying
experience featuring strobe lights, Jack the
Ripper and Sweeny Todd. Then, to calm
ourselves down, we spent forty minutes at
400ft above the city on the London Eye.
The Psychology students made their long
journey, due to getting lost several times, to

The Freud Museum, where we leant about
Freud, his life and his work. We also travelled
to Royal Holloway where we were given a
tour and even had the chance to attend a
Psychology lecture Our last day was spent
shopping on Oxford Street, and after a good
six hours we headed back to the hotel,
some of us carrying at least a suitcase full
of shopping, to pack for the journey home.
Thank you, from all of us, to Miss Martin
and Mr. Brown for a wonderful trip and such
amazing memories.

Charity Fête
Last December, a (fairly) sunny morning hailed the start of Peponi School’s
annual charity fundraising event; this year, a fête. Each tutor group had been
given some weeks to prepare a money-raising stall, which varied from a
Bucking Bronco to a café, from a shooting range to a slippery football pitch,
and truly every base for fun was covered.
The day started with the stalls and students were allowed to freely roam and
partake in whatever took their fancy. Many went straight for the wet sponge
toss, taking great pleasure in dousing students and teachers alike! The Bucking
Bronco was very popular, with many brave students wanting to see how long
they could last before being thrown through the air. The smell of hotdogs and
burgers wafted through the air from Mr. Pallister’s tutor group, who, along
with several other stalls, provided refreshment at a reasonable price. My own
tutor group took full advantage of people’s disregard for their comfort for a
prize, and had a cinnamon challenge tournament (there may or may not have
been some chilli mixed in with the cinnamon, no one can tell for sure), which
ensured that many people, including the gap students, ran screaming for
water, tears streaming down their faces.
After a lunch provided by Sylvester and his team, the slippery football,
organised by Mr. Obat’s tutor group, got started. As if football wasn’t already
hard enough, slippery football is played on an inflatable wet soapy pitch. The
rules still stood, but many of the players did not! Many very impressive games
took place (although to be completely honest, it was impressive if anyone
could run without ending up sprawled on the ground), with teams of both
girls and boys having a go. For most people in the end, the main objective was
to stay dry and upright. Not for the poorly coordinated!

Since 2012 Peponi has offered rowing and kayaking as sports
with the Nairobi Ruiru Rowing and Canoe Club. Last term a
group of Peponi rowers and kayakers went to Mugutha Dam to
row in a competition bringing young rowers from Kenya, Nigeria,
Uganda, Namibia and Senegal together. Peponi brought home
seven medals; one gold from Joshua Agabu, two gold from
Gracie Barden, two silver from Kaajal Kukadia, one silver from
Dominic Ringler and one bronze from Theo Ouya. All in all this
competition was very successful and showed Peponi’s potential as
a strong rowing and kayaking team. Many thanks to Eric for his
time in training us and organising us to go to these competitions.
We look forward to a bright future for these new activities at
Peponi.

Inter House Drama
The entire day was a huge
success, and with everyone’s
combined efforts, the school raised
190,545/= for its charities.
Our annual Inter House Competition was scheduled to be held on the 4th of December under the stars, but due to some unexpected
rain, it was postponed to the next day. Even though the performances took place during the day, the outdoor environment added to
the exhilarating atmosphere of the event.
The four houses had a selection of four short comedies that they had to prepare and perform; Magadi showcased ‘All the President’s
Turds’ by Bernard Scahill, Chala chose ‘The Accident’ by Herb Hersler, Jipe performed ‘The Birth of Womankind’ by Tlc Creative, and
Elementiata performed ‘Bar Wars Return of the Sauce’ by Richard James. All the performances were hilarious and very enjoyable. ‘The
Accident’ in particular was very unique as Chala used actors as props which got an amusing response from the audience and won them
first place.
Huge thanks go to Claire
Nightingale, Tracy Pallister and
the entire charity committee for
organising the whole event and
special thanks must go to Mrs.
Mukiri for donating the Bucking
Bronco.
It was evident from the entertaining and laughter-filled morning that each house had worked immensely hard and put a tremendous
amount of time and effort into their individual plays. It was fantastic to see the various dramatic talent displayed by both new and old
students, ranging from Yr9 through to Yr13. It was a magnificent end to the term.
