ZLAC Foundation Annual Report for 2014 ZLAC Foundation Mission Statement The ZLAC Foundation is a non-profit corporation created to provide resources to promote national and international amateur rowing and competition among girls and women, to foster rowing education, and to preserve the rowing history of women in America. Annual Report for 2014 Then and Now This annual report will focus on then (our last fiscal year, 2013) and now. In the past fiscal year the foundation barely met its goal of 20 Learn to Row attendees. During the past summer the ZLAC Foundation held its second learn to row. We cut the enrollment off at 40 attendees and still had kids begging on the second day to please let them attend. Our four volunteer coaches Deanna Groark, Nicole Thompson, Dan Putnam, and Brian Robison engaged these active teens in a variety of rowing related activities. The goal of the program was to develop rowing skills, set nutritional guidelines, and build strength with daily exercise routines. College coaches spoke on the value of rowing in college. There were daily team building exercises and a reflective time to journal experiences. The second day of training our young rowers limped in, struggling with muscles they didn’t know they had. Parents questioned the coaches, “Is it normal to be so sore after only one day? She came home, ate and crashed on the couch till this morning!” The coaches had nothing to worry about however. The kids came back enthusiastic. They felt like they had really done something from the first day. In one day the coaches had hooked 40 kids on the sport of rowing. ZLAC Foundation Summer 2014 Learn to Row Class and Coaches Page 1 ZLAC Foundation Annual Report for 201`4 Until this year the Foundation had barely attempted to write a grant. This year the board created a lengthy document in support of a rowing grant from LA 84. Whereas all the members of the Foundation worked on the document a special thanks goes to Elyse Vitale who coordinated and refined everyone’s efforts. We made a very strong presentation to LA 84 and we advanced to phase two of their process before we were told it would be doubtful we would receive any type of monetary distribution. Although this is a huge let down for the team it also has a silver lining. We now are in possession of a document that effectively presents our story. Carolyn Thomasson sorts through old uniforms for display. On the right: Polly Neal, Mary Grandell, Helen Wagner, and Sally Lynons share their memories of ZLAC over the years. The trophy room at the ZLAC Clubhouse with its beautiful cases looks like it has always been there. I’m sure you remember our dedication last year. This year Carolyn Thomasson (pictured above) has taken over as curator of our museum. She is highly dedicated to preserving the history of ZLAC. Her display skills keep the cases looking fresh and a little different on a regular basis. Behind the scenes this year Carolyn and Arline Whited have begun to sort through the 100 plus years of ZLAC history contained in documents, scrapbooks, and news articles. These items are becoming extremely fragile. Carolyn and Arline spend time on a weekly basis researching and visiting other museums to learn about preservation techniques. Currently we are working on a community grant to fund equipment to store and record these fragile documents. Patti Williams (Crew XI) is offering additional support for equipment to begin the process of transferring these documents to a digital format to be enjoyed by all and used for future research. Once the equipment has been purchased Carolyn and Arline will begin recruiting volunteers to aid in this monumental task. “Many hands will make light of the work.” Page 2 ZLAC Foundation Annual Report for 2014 Last year the foundation was unable to get a fundraising event off the ground. This year there was an enthusiastic response to the first Christmas Tree Fantasy fundraiser. Five members of ZLAC, Betty Ortlieb (Crew X), Happy ScanlonMoore (Crew XII), Debi Cerone, Penney Homel, and Arline Whited (all Crew XI) designed, created, and donated decorated trees with a little gift under it for a raffle at the ZLAC Christmas Tea. Our special thanks go to Karen Bachofer and Rachel Smith for graciously including the trees in their very successful event. The highlight of the event was Mary Bush’s daughter, Betty, who begged and pleaded for a raffle ticket for the Disney Character tree, “Frozen”. Little Betty was shaking with excitement as her name was called. It gave every volunteer involved in the project a warm feeling. The money from the event was designated for Junior Rowing Program. We have already had volunteers approach the team to create and donate trees for next year. I want to impress upon you the following three points: The ZLAC Foundation is serious about raising money through grants, fundraisers, and continuing annual support from our donors. We continue to research ways to involve young women in the sport of rowing. The historical documents owned by the ZLAC Club are very fragile and very important to the preservation of the history of women in rowing. After all ZLAC is the oldest women’s rowing club in the world. We need your help! Please become involved with the foundation by joining one of our committees or making an annual donation. You are the key to drawing young women into rowing and preserving the history we have created and will create.
