RACE TIME
Winter sports are great. Who doesn’t love zipping through freshly fallen snow on a pair of skis?
Who among us can say that they hate pounding around in snowshoes, making fresh tracks in
the untouched areas of our local forest preserves?
But when all is said and done, winter is the season we spend biding our time training for spring.
We’ve set our goals, hopefully put in some cold-weather work, and we are ready to start competing. Bring on spring.

To celebrate another year of running, cycling and triathlon, we’ve put together a diverse and
fun issue that explores everything from CrossFit training (one of the most intense and, so I’ve
been told, exciting ways to train and get in-shape) to the endurance feeds you need to follow on
Twitter when you’re wasting time at work… I mean, when you’re researching, analyzing and
helping to create a social media network for your company.

TIM HAMILTON
Tim Hamilton is a master of the 5K. In the past year, the
former college runner has won the “Hoof it for Hephzibah,
Lilac Strut, Buffalo Grove Frozen Turkey and Frosty 5K.
Add in third place finishes at the Grayslake 5K and Run for
the Stars, it’s hard not to be impressed.
While he has enjoyed tremendous success over the
years running competitively, Hamilton quickly notes that
he is not driven by wins, “The competition and wins are
great, but what I really like is what I call ‘running free.’ I
soak in the scenery, and focus on doing what’s best for my body. I’m more relaxed
and I just enjoy it a lot more.”
Hamilton ‘s next goal is to compete in the Fleet Feet Sports Soldier Field 10 Mile
presented by adidas in May with his cousins. “We’re going to run and raise money for
cancer, since I have lost family members to it. I’ll definitely be running a little harder
with them in mind.”

MARIA CICERO
Maria Cicero has quite a history. A graduate of York High
School, Maria was a state champion and record holder in
cross country and track for the Dukes. She then attended
Boston College University, where she was a four time AllAmerican in cross country and distance events.
Upon graduation, Maria took some time off from the
sport, but enjoyed an extravagant return by winning the
Frosty 5 Mile this past February, “The Frosty 5 mile was actually the first race I had done in a while. I took a few years
off after school to focus on the professional world, but I am getting back into it now.”
Maria’s memories and milestones may be too numerous to count, but she says
she has enjoyed returning home, “I think being around old running friends and familiar locations, it’s really nice.”
What’s next for Maria? Look for her to try and be one of the first to cross the finish
line at the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle on March 21.

The Grid: Revolutionary Foam Roller
$40
www.tptherapy.com
According to promotional materials, the Grid foam roller is an exercise roller
“designed to massage and allow blood and oxygen to flow through the product’s
“3D matrix of distrodensity zones.” Huh?
It turns out “Distrodensity Zones” are simply different texture areas on the roller
designed to mimick massaging fingers, thumbs and palms. Techno-babble at its finest.
I put the product on the ground and began mimicking the moves depicted in the
instruction booklet. As I began rolling and curling myself atop the foam Grid, I
was pleasantly surprised to feel a dramatic burning in my abs and back. This
baby works pretty darn well isolating and working your core. As a roller, the Grid
performs admirably, the padding is more comfortable than most exercise rollers,
but stiff enough to be useful in a variety of exercises.
The massage? Not so much.
Throwing your body weight onto a textured tube isn’t my idea of a nice massage,
I find it to be downright painful at times. Though if you enjoy rolling around on the
floor to relax and work those muscles, this is definitely your product.
Saucony SonicLite HD Jacket
$90
www.Saucony.com
Cars are the natural enemy of runners and cyclists alike. Cars are also a natural
byproduct of city living, a poison we all have to drink. But if we have to deal with
traffic along our paths, we might as well make ourselves as visible as possible as
we run among the tons of moving metal.
Saucony’s SonicLite HD Jacket is one of the best running jackets that we’ve ever
seen in terms of visibility and safety. Construction worker orange and reflective,
Saucony’s jacket makes runners stand out at as they cut through the night. But
we’ve seen reflective jackets before. What really makes the Saucony SonicLite HD
Jacket stand out from other reflective clothing is the fact that the jacket includes a
removable LED light on the wrist as well as reflective paneling across the chest,
back and arms for greater visibility.

More than 100 nonprofit organizations are

by Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, a bicycle race across 11 Southeastern Wisconsin cities, will include a Women’s 3/4 category,
in addition to the Pro Women 1/2 category, in
this year’s daily race schedule, promoter Midwest
Cycling Series has announced.
Cat 3/4 Women will have the opportunity to
race in ten consecutive days on this year’s 11-day
Tour, which runs June 17 to 27 and will feature
nine criteriums (lap races) and two road races for
professional and amateur cyclists.
“We listened to the passionate feedback we received after the ‘09 Tour of America’s Dairyland
from women cyclists who said they wanted more
opportunities to race” said Bill Koch of Midwest Cycling Series. “Basically, they said, ‘if you
build it, we will come’ so we’re looking forward
to some exciting women’s racing of varying levels
out there this year.”
The addition of the Women’s Cat 3/4 category
will enable less experienced female riders the opportunity to compete against racers of a shared
experience level for cash prizes and primes (incentives) before tens of thousands of spectators
on the same courses as the Pros. In the Wisconsin area, the Tour promoter will work with ad18

“Presenting sponsor Wisconsin Milk Marketing

Opening day of the 2010 Tour of America’s

The Shorewood Criterium schedule will feature
Men’s and Women’s Pro races only, along with
a kids event. Other Wisconsin communities
hosting criteriums in the second year of the
Tour include Thiensville, Grafton, Appleton,
Sheboygan, Waterloo, Fond du Lac, Downer

to road races, the latter of which will be held on
the historic Road America racetrack. Across the
11 days, Tour of America’s Dairyland will award
over $105,000 in cash prizes and primes to racers
of multiple categories.
lying the votes, Erin Ashley Mink Garvey
a 25-year-old Chicagoan claimed the winning spot by earning the most votes from
her peers. Here is her winning entry:
“Running is my unicorn pursuit. Doing
it makes me feel I can accomplish the
impossible. It satisfies my yearning for
adventure, my insatiable sense of inquiry,
and my desire to experience the world
in ways inimitable. No other community
matches running’s sense of camaraderie
or readily embraces the socially unacceptable. Running gives me epiphanic
moments of clarity otherwise unreachable, and it makes me a fantastic wife,
daughter, sister, and friend.
Running will alleviate the world’s ills, and,
in the process, make all of us better, stronger, fitter, faster people.
Here’s to you, running. There’s nothing
quite like you.”

DONATE 5,000 RACE SHIRTS TO HAITIAN CHARITY
E
ndurance athletes have always been
quick to extend a hand to people in
need. Whether it means running for a
cause or raising money, as a group, runners
and cyclists are a charitable bunch. Th at’s
why it comes as no surprise that we have to
close the doors on our successful Haitian tshirt drive.
After everything was tallied, our readers filled
a supply locker at the Evanston-based nonprofit Haitian charity the “Haitian Congress

over 5,000 unused race t-shirts. The shirts have
been driven to Florida where they will jump

oldest of five children. Growing up, Aagaard played and excelled
at soccer, eventually going on to play for Augustana College.
In August of 2005, Aagaard was diagnosed with type one diabetes,
once known as juvenile diabetes and a condition that inhibits the
body’s ability to produce insulin, a hormone needed to turn sugars
and starches into energy.
After his diagnosis, Aagaard, who confesses that his interest in running was limited to his exploits on the soccer pitch, turned to the sport
as a way to combat the disease on a physical and mental level.
22
“My running for a cause was very much a coincidence. I decided
last-minute that I would run the Chicago Marathon and the registration was closed,” he says. “Incidentally, the only organization
that was left that had registration available was the Diabetes Project, so I thought ‘cool’ this is a unique opportunity given my state
as a diabetic.”
Even though Aagaard’s arrival on the charity running scene was, accidental or, more fittingly, fortuitous, he quickly propelled himself
to become a driving inf luence behind the Chicago charity’s fundraising arm.
“Soccer was the driving force, or at least my initial interest in running,”
says Aagaard. “After my diagnosis, I really got into running. There are a
lot of things that either help or repair your health by running. So I committed to running a lot at that point. I hadn’t run a competitive race at
all and I just decided to start training for a marathon.”
Last year, Aagaard raised the most money out of any other Cellmates on the Run participant bringing in over $4,000 dollars for his
Bank of America Chicago Marathon run. He credits his fundraising
success to cultivating good relationships, having close friends and
the willingness of many people whose lives have been touched by
the disease to give to the cause, a feeling that he can relate to.
And train he did. Today, Aagaard is the veteran of seven marathons,
has qualified and raced in two Boston Marathons and has become
the leading fundraiser for his charity of choice, the Chicago Diabetes Project and their running team, Cellmates on the Run.
“I feel like participating [with Cellmates on the Run] gives me a
higher purpose than myself. That may sound cliché, but running is
an individual sport and it’s kind of cool to know that you’re representing a larger cause.”

THE SHUFFLE
2010 BANK OF AMERICA
SHAMROCK SHUFFLE
P RE V I E W
The Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle has
traditionally indicated the beginning of running season and the beginning to the end of
frozen streets and snowy paths, last year’s race
being a notable exception.
“It has been and remains the traditional
kickoff to the running season in Chicago,”
says Carey Pinkowski, who has served as the
Shamrock Shuffle’s race director since 1992.
With streets covered in snow and water, and
temperatures uncomfortably low, 2009’s Bank
of America Shamrock Shuffle was slick, slippery and felt more like a winter race than a
spring season-opener. But as any seasoned
Shuffle runner will tell you, this race, much
like Chicago, is entirely different year-to-year.
This year, more than in years past, will be an
altogether different experience for all racers
regardless of weather. That’s because this year
the course will be dramatically different.
Due to construction along the traditional
Shamrock Shuffle route, organizers were
26

forced to tweak the race route, deciding to
follow the Chicago River down Wacker Dr.
in what promises to be a memorable and scenic adjustment. Veterans to the race should be
pleasantly surprised by the change in scenery,
but will be familiar with the trademark start
and finish in Grant Park.
THE BASICS
The 8K (4.97 miles) race begins at 9 a.m. in
Grant Park with runners leaving from assigned
corrals and finishing back in Grant Park after
winding through downtown Chicago.
The 2010 event reached its capacity on February
16, which means that registration is closed except
for a limited number of entries that are available
through select sponsors and charity partners.

The two days prior to the Bank of America
Shamrock Shuffle are extremely important for

her two older brothers and competed in tennis while in high
school. Though there were few opportunities for girls in high
school sports at the time, she did what she could to stay active.
Now in her fourth decade of competitive running, the 63-yearold Evanston resident added to her long list of accomplishments
on February 7 at the Melbourne & Beaches Music Half-Marathon, which was also acting as the 2010 USA Track & Field
masters half-marathon championships.
But Rollins describes her 20s as a “sedentary decade”, where she
did very little in terms of exercise. She tried jogging in her mid20s but just didn’t enjoy it all that much and gave it up quickly.
On a cool, windy morning, Rollins covered the 13.1 miles in
one hour, 36 minutes, 37 seconds to win the national title in the
women’s 60-64 age group, as well as $400 for her efforts.
“I felt really good and pushed it,” said Rollins. “I didn’t think
I was going to be first, but I did hope that I would be in the
money (divided between the top men and women), and I
was fifth overall.
“It’s such a treat to win something that I would do for free.”
It seems like Rollins, who also works as a counselor and therapist, was born to run, but she really didn’t figure that out until
after she turned 30. Growing up she often played baseball with
34
M A R C H 2 0 1 0 CHICAGO ATHLETE MAGAZINE
It wasn’t until after going through a divorce that Rollins took
to running, and it took to her in return. She felt like she was in
a new phase of her life, and the desire to create a satisfying life
became a priority. It also helped that she lived in Chicago at the
time and grew to love running along the lakefront.
“Going through a divorce, many times in that type of transition
people turn to running,” Rollins said. “I took to it in a completely different way, I wanted to get into shape and I loved it.”
Still, it was two years (1980) before she decided to enter a race,
but once she did, Rollins became very active in the racing scene,
logging race distances from 5K to the marathon. Rollins found
that she really enjoyed the racing aspect of the sport and some
early successes – she ran 3:45 in her first marathon -- fueled her
desire to improve.
“My philosophy for racing is to do your homework,
get ready, DO YOUR BEST, and whatever happens, happens.
There is something to celebrate in that.”
Running also proved a positive in her life for other reasons as well.
Before boarding the bus for the starting line at Hopkinton and the
1982 Boston Marathon, a mutual friend introduced her to Carle
Rollins, an Evanston podiatrist.
“That was quite an experience,” she recalled. “We met each other
getting on the bus to the start, I couldn’t have planned that at all.
By the end of that day I told a friend I thought I had met my
future husband.”
The two were married in 1983, and together have two sons: Geoff
(26) and Chris (22). Interestingly enough, the “peaks” of Rollins’
running career came after each of the births of her sons.
In fact, after Chris was born in 1987, Rollins went on a two-year
PR binge, setting her lifetime bests at the 5K (18:30), 10K (38:40)
and the marathon (3:02). While she believes it is mostly physiological, she also believes training through her pregnancies helped
her get stronger and more focused.
Running has always been part of the Rollins family and in an interesting twist, on the same morning she won her national championship in Florida, Geoff completed the Kaiser Permanente HalfMarathon in San Francisco in a similar time (1:35:38) as his mom
did 3,000 miles away.
With her personal best times long behind her, Rollins still finds it
easy to stay motivated. A competitor in a “joyful and playful” way,
she enjoys racing for the competition and camaraderie.
“I love to win but I love the relationships and meeting other runners and supporting each other to excel,” she says. “It’s best to encourage each other to strive and achieve goals, but also to have fun
and enjoy it.
“My philosophy for racing is to do your homework, get ready, do
your best, and whatever happens, happens. There is something to
celebrate in that.”
And in a perfect example of never being too set in your ways to try
new things, Rollins competed on the track for the first time last
summer, running and placing second in both the 800 and 1500 at
the national senior Olympics. She enjoyed it so much she plans on
competing at the master’s track and field nationals this July.
Depending on what distance she is training for, Rollins typically
runs five days per week and totals between 35-50 miles. She once
ran as many as 60 miles per week years ago, but was often injured
and felt she left her best races on training runs. She now believes
in listening to her body while focusing on quality over quantity to
avoid injury.
Typically she alternates between hard and easy weeks. Over the
winter, she supplements her mileage with tempo-type work and
the all-important long run.
During the summer she likes to race often and uses them as
speed workouts, along with a weekly track regimen. Her favorite
workout is six to eight repetitions of 800 meters each, but during
marathon training she often stretches out intervals to a mile and
sometimes two miles.
She figures that gives her strength at the end of marathons,
and a mental edge as well. After all, Mile 24 represents just
eight laps of the track to the end of the race. Whatever it is, it
works. Rollins is consistently near the top of her age group at
the Chicago Marathon, and, in 1993, was the fastest women’s
master’s finisher (3:12:30).
Believing that she is at a point in her life where it is time to give
back, Rollins loves to get people motivated to run and compete.
She believes in the importance of being a “good steward” of the
talents she has and to pass along that love of the sport and knowledge to others.
She hopes to be certified as a coach in the near future, but, in
the meantime, works with and helps design interval programs
for local runners. She says she gets a lot of satisfaction out of
challenging the better runners while also providing encouragement and improvement to 10-11 minute milers.
The plan for 2010 is to return
to Boston in April to capture
her age group there (she finished second in 2009) and to
have a solid summer of training and racing leading up to
the Bank of America Chicago
Marathon, a favorite race and
one she has run almost every
year since 1980.
Rollins also feels that with agegroup and age-graded performances, there is still plenty to
strive for. Age is just a number, if
you want to run fast, run fast.
“If you are getting older and you
don’t want to slow down, don’t slow
down,” she said. “I am getting older
and allow for more recovery, but
when racing…you just push it.”

[ FLEET FEET SPORTS PRESENTS ]
WHAT WE’VE LEARNED
FROM THE BAREFOOT RUNNING DEBATE.
B Y: D AV I D D O W D
Point - Counterpoint
A lot of debate has been going on lately
over the “right” way to run and how (or if)
shoes fit into that equation. Proponents of
the minimal trend point out that injury rates
among runners have not decreased over
time despite the supposed advancements in
footwear technology. The other side points
out how very different the running population is compared to the boom of the 70s.
The sport of running is now accessible to a
much larger audience. When the sport was
dominated by ectomorphic speedy males,
injuries were primarily related to overtraining and even the best shoes were not going
to solve that. Now, a four hour marathon is
mid-pack, and runners of all ability are enjoying participation in the sport, with women
as the majority. With this shift comes a greater need to protect the runner for longer runs
and slower pace. For women, injuries are
often biomechanics related, so the amount
of stability within their shoes can be a big
factor in making it to the finish line healthy.
It is certainly true that over the course of human history we have run without shoes for
much longer than with shoes, and some athletes today train and excel with little or no
footwear. However for most of us, the world
is no longer trails and pastures, but hard
paved and flat surfaces. In our own individual evolution, most of us have been shod for
many more years than not, so adapting to
any change is best done slowly.
Rather than taking sides in the debate, we want
to discuss two benefits that have indirectly come
as a result that can benefit everyone – better
products and more focus on how we run.
More is not always more – The philosophy of most of the big brands has been, historically, to put the most focus on the cushioning
aspect of their shoes. Air, gel, and other “technologies” have all been used as the easiest
way to designate price and market the overall
performance value of the shoes. The higher
the price, the more you get in terms of these
supplemental cushioning units.
At some point you reach a point of diminishing returns, where the foot is perched too
high atop the ground, or the shoe gets heavier and/or stiffer to the point of reduced comfort. When looking at shoes as you might
automobiles, it is one thing to upgrade from
a compact car to a luxury sedan, but when
the next level is a monster truck, you may
have gone too far.
When less is more – There is an inherent
stability to being barefoot. It is much easier
to sprain an ankle in shoes than without.
Runway models at an Alexander McQueen
fashion show last year refused to walk in the
“armadillo shoes” he designed as they were
deemed too dangerous. They were willing to
risk careers to save limbs.
Runners racing in some of the most challenging and competitive trail races are often
found wearing the lightest and lowest to the
ground shoes they can find. Why? Partly
because of the shoe’s light weight but also
because it increases proprioception, which
is the bodies ability to recognize where it
is in space. To be able to feel the ground
and “steer” with one’s feet has a lot of advantages that a very heavily protective shoe
does not offer.
Everybody wins – Having this debate
go mainstream by the popular media has
led to a change in how the shoe companies look at their product. The foams and
midsole materials have become very advanced over the past few years. However,
the companies were often married to these
larger drop-in cushioning units because they
feared the consumer would not perceive the
shoe as valuable if they were removed. But
now, with the industry ready to accept that
less might very possibly be more, innovation
has flourished.
• The newest footwear styles from Nike
contain no Air, which has been replaced
by a foam design that adapts to the stability
needs of the wearer.
• Brooks just introduced the new Glycerin
without their typical hydroflow units and uses
a substance they call DNA that provides softer or firmer levels of cushioning based on the
runner’s weight and impact force.
• The new ap+ midsole from Mizuno results
in some of the lightest and springiest feeling
shoes on the market.
• adidas just brought the adiStar Solution
to market which, by design, can beome the

answer to a wider segment of runners than
typical “neutral” shoes.
Running shoe updates are almost always
talked about as being an “evolutionary”
process but what we are seeing now is a
revolution. Without the constraints of the
past, shoes have simultaneously gotten
simpler, lighter and yet even more technically advanced.
Choose your weapon – Whether you
want to dive into the deep end and try out
products from Vibram, like the new Bikila,
made specifically for runners, or the Nike
Free, which remains one of the best products, on the market is up to you. In May,
Saucony will be launching the brand new
Kinvara, a shoe already creating a lot of
buzz in the industry. On the trail side, the
New Balance 100 is a shoe designed to
literally bring you closer to nature by being
just a few millimeters off the ground.
You can also choose none of the above.
You can opt to run drills barefoot on the
local golf course or football field to build
lower leg strength and improve form. Track
coaches have been using this in their ath-
lete development for years. You can also
practice better form in the shoes you already run in. Coaches and training groups
are great sources to learn how to improve
your running technique to improve efficiency and reduce injuries.
What have we learned? – The main
sticking point of this whole topic is not
whether or not to run barefoot, but instead
that all runners should be thinking about
how they run. The one area of the sport
that has been largely neglected is focusing on one’s form during exercise. It’s a
major component of most other endurance
sports, like swimming and cycling, but runners have traditionally focused on just two
things, how fast and how far.
Regardless of what shoes you wear, or how
fast or how far you run, you would be a better runner if you worked on your form. And
the best part is that at the end of the day,
you can practice better form in any shoe you
want! Your posture, your stride length, how
you strike the ground… all of these things
should be a part of your training. In 2010,
Fleet Feet Sports doesn’t just want to see you
run, we want to see you run better!

BODIES LITTER
THE GYM FLOOR.
One by one, they drop. One last,
final, hard, push of the weight
and *crash* it slams to the floor.
“Time!” he shouts, and then goes
down to the ground—back on
the mat, knees up, hands flopped
above the head.
Dozens of bodies gasp for air like
near-drowning victims, chests
heaving. Eyes closed.
Blinking, vision is blurry and time
seems to stop. Sweat runs into the
corners of the mouth, stings the
eyes, drips into the ears. Seized
muscles finally release, feeling like
pudding with the weight of lead.
Welcome to CrossFit—where
“forging elite fitness” happens
the hard way.

Bit by bit, the corpses reanimate. A hand reaches
for a high five. “Nice job, man,” gasps out from
above. The head on the ground nods ‘thanks’—
the mouth doesn’t yet have the convenience of air.
Slowly, the eyes open, and the gym, Windy City
CrossFit, comes into hazy view. The torso heaves
upward, hugging the legs, thanking them for still
being attached to the body. A Rorschach test of
sweat stains the black padded floor.
Once they can move, the corpses have a tendency
to gather. They crawl toward one another, huddling in groups of two or three. “That was brutal.”
They speak quickly, breath still racing. “Awesome
job.” “Nice work.”
Everyone stays in the gym until the last athlete is
finished as a show of support. After all, they’ve all
been that last person before. Some cheer, some socialize, some clean up the weights, and some just
lie on the floor waiting for the final athlete to finish. But everyone stays.
CrossFit is a high-intensity cross-training method
that builds ten aspects of fitness: cardiovascular
and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance
and accuracy. Today’s punishment, for example,
called for 20 reps of five different barbell lifts (100
total) for time. The killer: Every minute, on the
minute, four burpees—a squat thrust (jump and
push-up) variation that’s the heart rate equivalent
of flooring the gas on a drag racer.

CrossFit affiliates are gyms only in the sense that
people exercise there. You won’t see freshly steamed
towels or a front desk staff. At Windy City CrossFit (WCCF), Olympic rings hang from the ceiling.
Metal pull-up bars and Olympic barbell weightlifting platforms line the edges of the room. The only
pieces of cardio equipment are six rowing machines
tipped up against the wall.
Still, anyone can do the workouts, explains Justin Marcis, owner/head coach of WCCF. “It is
extremely intense, but it’s intense as you want to
make it,” he says. “The workouts can be scaled to
your ability level. It takes a while to really get into
that intensity; we’re not just going to throw somebody into the fire.”
What would become an international network of
CrossFit locations began in a small gym in Santa
Cruz, California, in 2001. The trend has exploded
in Chicago over the past few years, with five affiliates in the city and more than a dozen in the
suburbs. The first CrossFit program in the city began in 2005, when Dave Ojeda founded CrossFit
Chicago. The first brick and mortar CrossFit facility, WCCF, opened its doors in December 2007.
At the beginning, seven members worked out in
a 1,000-square-foot storefront. The current space
is 6,000 square feet, and membership now hovers
around 200.
“I think it was just a matter of time for Chicago to
catch up to the national trend,” explains Rudy Tapal-
C
promises to “forge elite fitness”
g the crap out of you.
la, owner/CEO of CrossFit Chicago. “It just takes a
couple of good affiliates to spread the good word about
CrossFit and the results our members see.”
But what results can runners and triathletes have to
gain from a program that purposefully scoffs at specialization? “If you are a person who likes to compete
in marathons, triathlons, and races, then CrossFit is
going to make you faster,” Marcis says. “CrossFit’s
going to help with trunk stabilization, balance, neuromuscular efficiency, and increased aerobic capacity
through the short and intense workouts that we do.”
Take WCCF member Bridgid Rooney. After only
seven months of CrossFit, her 2009 marathon time
improved a full hour from the previous year. The
40-year-old even crossed the finish line 25 minutes
faster than when she ran the race in her late 20s.
Though the results are impressive, they’re not the only
thing that keeps members coming back. “I think every CrossFit has a strong and unique community. I’d
go as far as calling it a family,” Tapalla says. CrossFit
members have been known to host chili cook-offs at
the gym, volunteer to roast a pig after a fundraising
workout, and invite the CrossFit members to their
bands’ gigs. “I quite often laugh at how many of our
members’ friends don’t understand that we actually
hang out with people from the gym,” says Tapalla.
“It’s the people that make the difference,” explains
WCCF member Brenda Brown. “The first time I
walked in, I went, ‘Really? Have you seen these people? I don’t look anything like these people.’ But everyone came up and introduced themselves, and they
were completely, totally cool. Everybody is just like,
‘You’re a CrossFitter now, welcome to the family.’
They pulled me into it.”
C
When everyone else in her heat had finished, Brown
still had to finish her last 1-mile run. She wouldn’t be
doing it alone.
“People who had already done this hard—absolutely
horrible—workout, they ran that last mile with me.
They didn’t have to do that. They’ve already ran two
miles. They’ve already done 300 squats, 200 pushups, and 100 pull-ups and yet they ran another mile
with me to just keep me going.
“I crossed that finish line and I couldn’t breathe,
could barely stand up, couldn’t see straight—because,
let’s be clear, I’m not a runner—and yet I finished
that thing and felt like I can beat up Mike Tyson, like
I can conquer the world,” Brown raves.
Even experienced athletes are humbled by CrossFit workouts, but Marcis stresses that CrossFit can
meet anyone at his or her level of fitness. “While
people see the intensity, that’s what they think of
CrossFit, but the first thing we train is mechanics,”
Marcis explains. “Then we make sure you’re doing
it with correct mechanics consistently. We bring the
intensity later.”
Bodies may litter the floor after a CrossFit workout.
Vision may be blurry. But at the end, there’s a high
five. There’s a “good job, man.” Says Brown, “It’s that
type of encouragement, that type of camaraderie, and
that type of family that helps you get through it and
makes you keep wanting to go back.”
Photos by: Ken Stachnik
A few months into her time at CrossFit, Brown was
pulled into something she thought she could never
do. WCCF hosted Murph Day, a fundraiser for the
Naval Special Warfare Foundation. CrossFit members from all over Chicago were invited to come and
enjoy the celebration—which consisted of a 1-mile
run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and a
1-mile run.
At the time, Brown had never run a mile in her life,
but fellow CrossFit members kept telling her she
could do it. She signed up. “And there I went,” Brown
says of that day last summer. “I tried to run the first
mile, and everyone was lapping me, but they pushed
me to keep going.”

YOUTH SWIMMING
A
t a recent swim meet, the viewing area was
so tightly populated by parents that most
opted to set up chairs in the hallways.
Each race had more than 100 entries and
the meet had to be expanded to two pool locations across town – just to accommodate the eager
swimmers.
Youth swimming is thriving in Chicagoland to be
sure, but is it a sport that you and your children
should consider? You might be hesitant. Sure,
Michael Phelps is wonderful, but he swims six
hours a day and eats an unbelievable amount of
food. Can this be good for a kid? How do you get
started? Is it too late for my child to join?
Proficiency
Every swim team has novice swimmers. Without
beginners, clubs would never survive – so don’t be
intimidated. Clubs are not composed entirely of future Olympians. To join, your child will have to be
evaluated by the coach. Most teams will require the
ability to swim 3 or 4 competition strokes for 25-50
yards. If your child cannot do this, then a few swim
lessons should get them on their war to this point.
Older kids may be expected to swim a little more
proficiently before joining the team. Many clubs
offer swim lessons or “Pre-Teams” to get novices
up to speed.
Which team?
There is a swim team for every child. Investigate club teams, summer outdoor teams, YMCA
teams and school teams in your area. You will
By Christine Palmquist
find a team that will welcome your child no matter what age or experience.
Every child has a race
Swimming treats every child equally. Swimmers
are seeded by their personal best times. Every
swimmer swims a similar number of events in
every meet – always racing to set a new personal
best. Meets are structured so that swimmers are
rewarded for their own improvements.
Gradual commitment
Will your little swimmer be doing double workouts?
Not for a long time and not until they are ready.
Training times increase gradually as your child develops. Some swim clubs even have no attendance
requirements for younger swimmers. Hopefully,
swimming is just one of the activities that your child
will try in these golden years of youth. So, if your
nine-year-old makes two swim practices a week and
plays baseball on the other days, the coaches should
understand. If they don’t, look for another team.
Will you spend your weekends at
swim meets?
Some. Most meets are optional for the younger
swimmers. Sign up for as many or as few as you’d
like. Soon you will realize how much fun the
meets can be for both you and your swimmers.
My kids love the camaraderie and the feeling
of being a part of the team. They’ve made good
friends, learned a little independence and bonded
with caring coaches. They are learning that patience and hard work will result in rewards – good
lessons for developing personalities.

competition battling it out in the
Spooky Sprints.”
FONDEST RUNNING MEMORY: “My fondest
memory was crossing the finishing
line at the Napa Valley Marathon
with an Olympic Trials qualifier,
knowing I would be able to toe the

FONDEST RUNNING MEMORY: “Placing
sixth at Cross Country Nationals
in 2006. The course was completely mud. We were covered
with mud from head to toe by the
time we fi nished. Our team got
third and we were only 4 points
from getting fi rst. It was just
such an exciting day and the pictures of us all happy and muddy
are priceless.”

• Third American finisher at
2008 Bank of America Chicago Marathon
FAVORITE RACE: Bank of America
Chicago Marathon
FONDEST RUNNING MEMORY: “I appreciate every day that I have the opportunity to run and thank God
for blessing me with some running
talent. The one memory that sticks
out the most is coming back from
fourth at the half of the 2009 Green
Bay Marathon, with three Kenyan
runners over three minutes ahead,
to finish second in 2:20:56. It was
over a minute faster than my goal
time and a three-minute personal
best. Having my fiancée, now my
wife, Katie and my parents there
to celebrate with me made it even
more special.”
