Working to end the Stigma and
Discrimination of Mental Illness
http://www.bringchange2mind.org
The fear of stigma can have a devastating effect on those living with
mental illness. Change happens one person at a time. If you are living
with a mental illness, know someone who is, or just want to help, take
our pledge to help end stigma.
For people living with mental illness:
I am living with a mental illness that is treatable and manageable.
Special Points I am a valuable and valued person, and I deserve to be treated with
respect.
of Interest:
I am responsible for the decisions and choices I make in my life.
Free Home Repair I will educate myself about the symptoms of my illness, and any side
effects I may have from treatment.
I will find and use the resources I need to work toward stability.
Quarterly
I will communicate about my experiences with others which will help
Resource
them support me in difficult times and keep me “on track.”
Information
If I am feeling suicidal, I will reach out for help, for in the face of real pain
and suffering, it is others who can help me with a commitment to live.
I can reduce stigma in myself and in others by being open about living
with mental illness, naming it out loud, and raising people’s awareness.
Inside this

Procedures
It is likely that someone I know is living with a mental illness and that
fear of stigma may be preventing them from accepting their illness and
seeking help.
I can make a difference by learning about mental health issues and the
devastating effects of stigma.
If someone I know exhibits sudden changes in behavior, I will pay
attention and reach out to them.
If someone I know is experiencing suicidal thoughts, I will take it
seriously and make every effort to ensure they get help.
I will not perpetuate or tolerate stigma of any kind and will commit
myself to changing the way society views people living with mental
illness.
To members of Archway's Community:
We are members of the Board of Directors who make up the Transition
Committee. We have been given the daunting responsibility of finding a
replacement for Lou Van Hollen. We realize that many of you may feel
uneasiness about Lou's retirement and the future of Archway. We want you
to know that the board is diligently working on the process to ensure we hire
the most qualified person to lead Archway into the future, while still
maintaining our culture and who we are.
This is a watershed moment for Archway. Lou has led our organization for
over 30 years. We are sad to see Lou leave, but it also presents us with an
opportunity to enhance Archway's work - to regroup, to grow in new
directions and to strengthen the work we already do.
The board is "managing this transition" in Executive Directors that will be
crucial to Archway's future. This transition process began with Lou's
announcement of retiring and does not end until AFTER the first year with
the new Executive Director. The board will guide and be a partner in every
step of the process. We will work hard to have a successful search,
successful hire and successful leadership transition.
We will not rush the process - this will take time and effort to find just the
right person. The staff and the individuals who use our services will be a
part of the process. We will want to hear your feedback. We will look for an
Executive Director who fits Archway now but who could also help us identify
and meet our future needs.
We will also honor Lou's legacy, while preparing Archway for a new
Executive Director. We will never have another Lou. He is one of kind. It
would not be fair to compare the next director to him. Our hope is that
whoever we hire will also be a one of a kind leader as well. This is NOT
business as usual. We will need everyone to step up, pull together, and
help support our work in finding the next Executive Director of Archway.
Sincerely,
Kurt Hoffman, Board President and
Chair of the Transition Committee
We Need to Talk!
As you may know, Archway’s Director Lou Van Hollen is
retiring on September 30. That’s a long way off, but the
Board of Directors wants to use the time between now and
then to carefully plan the hiring of the next Director.
We need your help. We want to know
the type of person you want to be
selected. What skills should the next
Director have? What attitude? What
personal qualities? We need to know
what you’re thinking before we start
interviewing people so we know what
we should be looking for.
So, on Friday, February 14, 9:30 AM
at the Wellness and Recovery Center members of the
Board want to meet with you and hear what you have to say.
We plan to stay in touch with the people using services
throughout the entire hiring process.
I hope you can join us. I’m looking forward to meeting you.
Kurt Hoffman,
Board President and
Chair of the Transition Committee
RECOGNITION DAY
Join us on Friday, February 28th. at the Wellness &
Recovery Center to celebrate Recognition Day. Recognition
Day takes place at the beginning of the day. Participants
receive and give positive feedback for successes throughout the month, little successes and big ones too! You can
get an “A” for effort! We talk about the importance of goal
setting and working towards a positive outcome. This is a
good time to practice speaking in front of others in the
group, by sharing your personal insights, feelings and
thoughts. There are a few rewards, too.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Afterwards, we have a nice meal and cake to celebrate
any birthday in the current month. Many thanks go out to
Clara, Cindy and the kitchen volunteers. If you are
celebrating a birthday, please join us. Even if you can’t
make it in for the Recognition Group, please come for the
meal and birthday celebration. We hope you join in the fun
celebration!

Hey, you artists!!!
Last year, I attended the first annual exhibit down in Baltimore of art done by
people using mental health services throughout the State. It was a great event
held at a great museum. The American Visionary Arts Museum features
works not by Rembrandt, Picasso, and Degas, but by untrained artists who
create art from what’s happening in their hearts and minds.
The only bad thing about last year’s event is that YOUR WORK was not
there. Frankly, some of the art I’ve seen around here over the years is far more
impressive than what I saw displayed in Baltimore. I’d love to see some of
your pieces selected for display.
If your piece is selected, I promise to get you down to the show and back. The
Wellness Center and 408 N. Centre St. have fliers with full information as to
how to submit a work for display and other rules.
Do it! Hurry! Entries are due MARCH 31.

Earning Recovery Points!
Another way you can have some fun is by earning enough recovery points to be able to attend
special community-based activities one time a week. If you earn five(5) recovery points during the
week, the following week you can be part of a community activity.
Some examples of activities are: swimming, bowling, canoeing, art exhibits, or special events.
You can earn recovery points through any combination of the various level of supports below.
Level of Participation

Food Club
What Is The Food Club?
The food club is a voluntary membership program to help your food budget last
longer. The program is through the Western Maryland Food Bank and is
operated by Archway’s Wellness & Recovery Center.
How Does The Food Club Work?
You donate at least a $6.00 membership fee every month and we’ll (staff with
help from members) deliver a box of food and non-food items to your home.
You need to pay your donation at time of delivery.
How Do I Join?
Get an Application and Receipt & Release Form from your Human Service
Worker. Fill out both forms and ask your HSW to turn them into the Wellness &
Recovery Center.
That’s It!
Someone from the Wellness & Recovery Center will call you to confirm a
delivery date.
Below is the delivery schedule. If you have any questions, please call Maria or

FREE QUIT SMOKING/TOBACCO PROGRAM
The Allegany County Health Department has a free quit smoking/tobacco program that includes free nicotine replacement
patches. The program is available to anyone who is 18 years of
age or older living in Allegany County.
All you need to get the patches is a note from any health care
provider stating it’s okay for you to have the patch--it does not
have to be formal and may be written on a prescription pad
note.
Participants come in every two weeks for about 10 weeks, with
the first session lasting about 30 minutes and follow-up sessions
about 10 to 15 minutes each.
Appointments may be made Monday through Friday from 2:45
pm to 4:30 pm. Please have Health Care Provider write a referral
for the program.
For more information or to make an appointment, please call
Kathy Dudley at 301-759-5050.
